10th Osians Cinefan Mumbai film festival
The next edition of Osians 10 day Delhi-based Cinefan festival, begins with its 2 day Mumbai edition at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai.
The event will be held on the 13th and 14th of June, with a felicitation of Shammi Kapoor as its centrepiece. The helmer shall be honoured at the Grand Finale after a screening of Shakti Samantha ’s Kashmir Ki Kali.
The 2 day preview shall also witness the screening of some of the highlights of the upcoming 10 day Cinefan in Delhi, to be held between the 10th and 20th of July. Selections include new works by Hou Hsiao Hsien, Pascale Ferran, Alexi Tan and Yoshiro Fukogawa.
The singularly outstanding film and most significant for world cinema buffs is Hou Hsiao Hsiens French language debut, The Flight of The Red Balloon. Hou moves from the terrain of historical/political drama (Puppetmaster , Flowers of Shanghai) and present day, post modern Taiwanese society (Millenium Mambo, Three Times) to re establish his fixed-distance floating camera aesthetic to contemporary Paris. Most reminiscent of his 2003 Ozu tribute, Caf Lumiere, the film is a follow up of sorts to Albert Lamorisses 1956 short, The Red Balloon, and has the great French actress Juliette Binoche at its forefront.
The festival (as always) includes masterworks that the conservative film buff would otherwise ignore. Included are Woo Ming Jins The Elephant and the Sea and Jan Lis Bamboo Shoots. While the debutants film is a worthy companion to Tsai Ming Liangs I Dont Want to Sleep Alone, particularly in its depiction of the SAARS virus, Bamboo Shoots is in the tradition of the recent Chinese neo-realist films.
Other significant films include the Alexi Tans style over substance work, Blood Brothers, Wayne Wangs Ozu-like, return to indie-cinema, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, and James Lees Breathing in Mud.
The focus this year is on Arab cinema. Included in the 2 day selection are flicks from an exhaustive retrospective of contemporary Middle East cinema, such as Mai Masris 33 Days and Mohammed Bakris Since you left.
Tons of other films/panel discussions/exhibitions too. See you there. ENTRY IS FREE.
