I like watching war films; there are hardly any decent Hindi War Films. There are a lot of movies on Freedom Fighters but war movies; we have had plenty of wars, right?
I liked ‘Border’ when it came out, but it does not have a repeat value – the direction is so shoddy, love tracks and full with cliche dialogues – it just puts me off watching it..LOC was cack. I can’t think of any other war Hindi films.. Can you?
But I hope ‘1971′ is a good war film – that is based on facts, does not have any shoddy action scenes and loud dialogues. ‘1971′ is about Six prisoners of War’s of the 1971. You might be thinking.. it could be another ‘Deewar’(2004), but i think, this one is more based on facts rather than fictional and hopefully song-less (although i would not mind good patriotic songs – OST). Manoj Bajpai is doing a film after a long time and in a role that seems like is made for him.
I am keenly waiting for this movie.

Hindi war movies….hmmm, maybe ‘Lakshya’, except it was more of a coming-of-age movie rather than a war movie.
Forget war-movies – I can’t even think of any good military movies except Nana Patekar’s ‘Prahaar’ – that stands apart from the rest – and maybe ‘Lakshya’ & ‘Pukar’. ‘Border’ certainly hasn’t aged well, I agree.
eagerly waiting for this movie …. looks and ensemble talented casts look promising …. especially as they have Manoj Bajpai(after a looooong time). But i m apprehensive as well …. there is always enough room for indian directors to
spoil this kind of subjects(War movies). But there is no harm to be optimistic.
And talking ab’t war films u must watch haqeeqat by Vijay Anand (especially due to technical aspects). It is my fav. war movie made by indian director.
Hope this movie will come on top in my list.
I think Technically ‘Lakshya’ was very sound(Cosidering Indian Stds), there were few really good shots in the movie. However, I dont wanna count ‘lakshya’ as War movie, it had war sequences but it was kindda one Man show.
LOC failed miserably because of the screenplay and repeatedly shown combat scenes. All the scenes were written in the same fashion, I couldnt even feel anything for India soldiers and I didnt hate the enemies.
1971 sounds interesting to me, I hope they put something in it. Manoj Bajpai have the capability to deliver, specially when its abt being manly on the screen.
Prahaar was good – amazing movie! Lakshya was more about Hrithik than the war, where as Pukar was just a love story – the way I saw it.
AP, yup, it does look quite impressing. when they think about commercial aspects they tend to mess it up. let’s hope they have made a good movie and have not force anything in the story/movie to make money/cut the risk.
i have seen 1971..i like it..its a very good film
So do I Saurabh, I wanna see old Manoj Bajpai back. By the way, his track with Ashutosh Rana in LOC was funny!
Where is Ashutosh Rana this days?
i just happened to watch the trailer for this yesterday.. and it looked good.. nice to see deepak dobriyal and manoj bajpai back in action!! trailer link:
http://nowrunning.com/trailers/trailer.asp?movieNo=3769&mv=1971
last saw manoj in a forgettable ‘fareb’ i think..? he’s really been MIA…
vaaaaah kya baat hain, now we won’t have to live in a hope for a month… we can expect good stuffs, then.
thanks striker, seeing the trailer for first time. looks brilliant; i like the colors. and it’s good to see them using narration and few dialogues to promote the movie rather than songs.
manoj is actually the worst thing in the film..deepak is superb..rest are great too..film is very good
Manoj was good in Pinjar…didn’t ‘dare’ to watch ‘Fareb’
lol, i thought we were just gona expect good stuffs and now… anyway, what matters is the film and not…
so i take it was a good successful attempt – would you go as far as saying ‘1971′ best war film to come out from India?
any more surprises?
LoL Anurag, bechare manoj ke peeche duniya padee hai. Ek to he is not getting work, doosra he has taken panga with everyone who could get the best out of him and now he got one movie and “worst thing” tag. jaan le lo manju ki
btw Anurag, you also menioned sometime that Salam-E-Ishq is class. Did you misspelt “r” with “l”. Unnecessarily lot of people in this forum had to “like” the movie after your comments:):)
Ranjit,
watch Chetan Anand’s “Hakikat” and J. Omprash’s “Akraman”. A good war movie should arouse patriotism and make you senti and both these film were successful in doing so. far better then Border, LOC(:((:(() and lakshya
@Jawalant: Have watched neither, unfortunately. Have not even heard of the latter movie, yaar.
But I don’t necessarily agree that a war-movie should ‘arouse patriotism’. It could also be about the futility of war, like ‘Gallipoli’ was, for instance. Unfortunately here if you made a realistic movie abut the futility of the Kargil war (for eg), it’d prob release when I have two kids in primary school.
Chetan Anand’s “Haqeeqat” about the Indo-China war is no doubt the best war film made in India to date. It’s mainstream, with some beautiful songs, Indian to the core. Balraj Sahni’s performance would rank as one of the finest ever witnessed in Hindi cinema.
One scene that really stands out is when after days of walking through the snow, suffering frost bite and what not, the soldiers stop at an area to rest. There one of them takes his socks off and his skin peels along with it. He barely feels it. Some stunning visuals in this film. A must see.
Making a war film in India is no easy task. If you want to make a war film, you need the support of the Indian government and military. You can show futility of war, but in the process, if you question the Indian government or military decisions and what not, you’re going to have a tough time seeing it through. Which is why our war films are either overtly jingoistic, or shy away from making any self-reflexive, politically critical comments.
i heard it over shot it’s budget and finally it was sold to TV 18.they were impressed with it and offered another film to amrit.
by the way akash sagar the music director is the youngest……he is 17-18 years old.
Anurag:
have you used talent of Deepak Dobriyal in your coming film” No smoking”?
Neither have I heard about Hakikat nor Akraman, so can you guys shed light on those two movies..
Wow…looking at the trailor on the website…It looks like a good movie…
Noticed that Ravi Kissen is also there…(for people who have followed Bigg Boss):)
But does it not look uncannily similar to that awfully bad movie…”Deewar – Let’s bring our heroes home”
it certainly does. however, ‘Deewar’ was more sort of a masala film than a war film. where as this particular movie seems like it would have done a bit of justice to the war genre.
what about govind nihalani’s vijetha. I think it was one of the best movie’s based on indian armed forces.
