The Departed : The very first Review

thedeparted_bigearlyposter.gif

Holy Shit! Was browsing AICN and found that they have a “secret” review sent by a “secret” reader for Martin Scorcese’s much awaited - The Departed. For those who came in late, The Departed is adapted (officially no Bollywood Ctrl C/Ctrl V here) from the Hong Kong hit - Infernal Affairs, which was a fairly decent movie Rated B+ in oz’s books.

The crew of “The Departed” looks like a Who’s Who Powerlist of Hollywood what with names like Martin Scorcese, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio… ufff!

So without any delay here’s what moviechick33 wrote on AICN

Here you go! Please don’t use my real name. You can use moviechick33. I know, very original.

Hi all. On Wednesday, August 23, I attended a private screening of the new Martin Scorsese film THE DEPARTED in Edgewater, NJ. The Movie View people explained …

Honest movies that failed

So KANK is a super duper hit! And so are Phir Hera Pheri (rip off of Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrels), Krrish and a bunch of other crappy stuff! While the producers guild goes about tom-tomming the resurgence of movies, i wanted to talk about a bunch of films that - according to me - had soul! Not just lovely locales and big stars - backed by marketing hype worth crores! Here goes in random order,

1) kagaz ke phool - immortal film that was beyond the mere mortals that wanted commercial masala.. even in those days! A classic in every term that can be thought of.

2) Lamhe - was India not mature enough for Lamhe? we will never know. But, probably one of the finest love stories ever made in India. Yash Chopra at his best. ( and no sarson ke khet for a change…)

3) Main Azaad Hoon - …

    People,

Sanjeev Kumar - the Gulzar Connection

Sanjeev Kumar’s house was strictly vegetarian. So whenever SK visited Gulzar, SK would ask for one of his favorite foods - “paaya” to be made and thus he would satisfy his non-veggie palate. And there were strict instructions given to Gulzar to keep a bottle of “Black Label” at all times at his house. SK only drank Black Label and Gulzar would ensure that a bottle of it was always available whenever SK dropped in.

According to “Because He Is…”, a look into Gulzar’s life by his daughter, there’s an incident where one of Gulzar’s friends was rushed to fly to Delhi to get “paaya” made from one of their, I guess, favorite places, and flown back on time, for SK to enjoy his paaya meal at Gulzar’s house.

That is one of the reasons SK shines in each of Gulzar’s cinematic gems. The off screen camaraderie efficiently brings in two …

    People,

Geniuses that never became…

You feel enthused, pumped up and bow to this first time movie director whose movie just blew you away. You can’t wait to see his next piece of work. His next work comes out, you go in to watch the movie, you come out walking like a zombie…your mind is numb, you are ready to be sent back to kindergarten to re-learn the a,b,c and the only thought knocking inside your skull is “What the fuck happened inside?”.

You see, the second movie of this genius movie maker is similar to the work done by babies who are learning to write. The “A” goes all over and turns into some weird new alphabet…and that’s what happened. But then you give the director the benefit of doubt, maybe it was his twin brother (who is unknown to the outside world) who made this movie because the genius director was sick, or …

    People,

Hrishikesh Mukherjee… forever

hrishikesh.jpg

Movie fanatics have been orphaned today… The man, who’s stories many of us grew up listening to, has left us. Forever.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee, our dear Hrishi-da is no more. I am shocked beyond words to say anything except put this news link from Rediff. (thanks VC, Sumeet, Punds)

Oh what a sad sad sad day for Hindi Cinema.

Here’s a trip down the nostalgic lane that I published on Desi Train, a few weeks ago, when he was first reported to be hospitalized…

Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Hrishida to his fans) is critical and was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital with chronic renal failure. According to this rediff report: “There has been no significant change in his condition. He remains critical and is in the ICU on ventilatory support. He is responding to treatment, but it is too early to take a positive or negative stand on his health”

Let’s …

Devrai (2005)

I use to hate old Marathi movies because my mother won’t let me watch another channel during these movies. Yes! I am a maharahstrian. The older Marathi movies were mostly social drama set in rural Maharahsta. The late 80s and 90s show the emergence and dying of comedy movies. Laxmikant Berde, Ashok Sharaf were stars then. Baring a few hits, what came out was total crap. Slowly the number of movies in Marthi started to dwindle.
That’s when serious cinema came to the Marathi Film Industry. Today less Marathi movies are produced but the subject are as diverse ass possible which even the Hindi film industry does not dare to experiment. And what is heartening is that they receive commercial success which firms the belief that the audience needs good movies.
“Devrai” is just another example of a commendable effort. “Devrai” means Sacred Grove. The movie handles the delicate issue of Schizophrenia …
