2007 : A Lyrical Summary

2007 had some interesting & enjoyable songs written, tops the list is the Album of “No Smoking”, there can be difference of opinions about film but not about the songs, particularly lyrics. I think its one of Gulzar’s best works in recent times, lyrics actually conveys more about the film than the film itself, it surpasses material strata of meaning and transcends to a different high.

upale jaise sulagata hoon, kambakht dhue mein jalta hoon.” ,
“Jab nasha toot ta hai, kitne tukde gire hain”,
“ye jahaan faani hai, bulbula hai paani hai,
bulbulo pe rukna kya,
paani o pe behta ja, behta ja…”,

“pag dandio pe milna do din ki yaariya hain”…
“ye ashtray bharti jaa rahi hai”…

each and every song, each and every word…They don’t get any better than this. Jhoom barabar jhoom also add another feather in master’s cap.

Prashoon Joshi as usual lives up to the expectations with TZP, with his refreshing imagery and rich metaphors, choice of words stays amazing. Refreshing use of routine vernaculars and urban words exemplifies his talents as a poet as well as an Adman.

Jaideep Sahni has done some good work in patches (Johnny Gaddar, Chak De & Aaja nachle), but he is yet to prove himself as a full-fledged lyricist, his words sometimes shout a loud and you feel that they are not the words of a poet but of a scriptwriter or a story teller, they sometimes miss the flow of poetry.

Piyush Mishra again reminds us of his special traits, for me he is a much-underrated artist of our industry, there can be no doubts about him once he has written songs like “arey ruk ja re bande”…but he proves himself again in this year.

This year belongs to Swanand Kirkire, This NSDian has done it, not only with his scripts but also with his exceptional poetry, poetry that gels with the music, story, characters, singing, still sounds good and stirs your heart. Nothing clichéd about him, he writes from his heart (along with the mind), his songs are refreshing and original. His word sketch or Banaras in – hum to aise hain, tribute to Majhaz Lakhnavi jee me aata hai ye murda.…,
Absolute Hindi soliloquy in – laaga chunari mein daag…his sweet lullaby – chanda re...and o course the references in - bhule bisare…, list is long…most of these songs have been discussed on PFC time and again..

I am putting down some of my favorite lines of this year – unconventional and memorable, all are invited to make the list long…..

1. Hayaat phoonk de, havaas phoonk de…ke saans se sila hua libaas phoonk de…

2. Ye manzilein bhi khud hi tay kare, ye faansle bhi khud hi tay kare…

and
Kyun tu aaj itna vahashi hai, mijajh mein majhaz hai e gham-e-dil

3. Baasi Zindagi Udaasi
Taazi Hasney Ko Raazi
Garma Garma Saari
Abhi Abhi Hai Utaari

4. Aaa nind kaa sauda kare, ek khwad de ek khwab le..

5. Main Kabhi Batlata Nahin
Par Andhere Se Darta Hoon Main Maa

6. Mitti meri thi bhuri, wahi mere ghi aur churi

7. Mangega to mera hai chhinega to tera hai ke nahi…

8. Aaja chandni kootenge, aasman ko lutenge…

9. kitne der tum baatein karogi
filmo ki aur falsafon ki
kitni der aarjoo aad mein chhupegi
coffee ki aur kehkaho ki

10. teri moochhon ki woh shaane
tere kisse jaane maane
tere woh dhobi pachhaad
tere noton ke pahaad

11. didi agar tujhko hoti jo moochh,
main tujhko bhaiya bulaati tu soch,
are chhutaki agar tujhko hoti jo poochh
toh main tujhko gaiya bulaati tu soch

12. Aadhe adhure khwaab jo, poore na ho sake
ik baar phir se neend mein, wo khwaab bone do!!

13. Ek chhat ke tale ajnabi ho jate hai rishte,
bistar pe chhadaro se chup so jaate hai rishte

14. Yahan hai ik nadi, Aur vahan hai ik lal qila
Par kahan hai is shahar ka falsafa

15. ambar ka tukada toda, lakadi ka hatta joda
haath mein apana aasamaan hain re

16. nistubdh khadi hoon main,
nishabd khadi hoon main,
vishwasth khadi hoon mein…..

17. Chhoti si zindagi gehri si jeb hai,
Baki to jaaneman baato ke seb hai…

Yeah No Smoking lyrics/music were just awesome (Also the movie :d ). Kash Laga worked the most for me.

Kya jane kaun jaye bari se bari aye
    Hum bhi katar mein hai
    Jab bhi sawari aaye

    Yeh jahan fani hai
    Bulbula hai pani hai
    Bulbulon pe rukna kya
Paniyon mein bheta ja bheta ja

nice compilation …but don’t u think these songs are rarely lyrical and very unconventional…these songs are very complicated and it requires much effort to extract the meanings…? how can a layman could understand these thoughts. ? don’t u think the “shaayari” in these songs are lost ? agree we should experiment but at what cost. saahir and Majrooh also experimented but never tried to show that they are master of words or thoughts..I mean to say that how many of the songs u listed, an autorickshaw guy will prefer to hear..why r we making the songs complicated ?

  4. Vikrant on January 29th, 2008 1:43 am

Dipankar, IMHO, these songs are complicated because they represent a complicated situation or feeling or state of mind. This complex undertone has been always there. For e.g. Ghalib’s “Ragaun mein daudte firne ke hum nahin kaayal, gar aank hi se na tapka to fir lahoo kya hai…”
What Swanannd Kirkire wrote was amazing. Zafar’s character was young, hurt and restless. Full of contradiction in terms of life choices. His longing for companion is very strong. However deep down he knows (through his experience) that involvement in love will eventually bring more pain but still he can’t help it. He is questioning himself that why do I feel that way even though I know that its gonna bring the pain (don’t we all!)?
Now take this stanza ‘kyun naye naye se dard ki firak mein talaash mein udaas hai dil’. Beautiful! Everything I wrote in so many lines above is encapsulated in this one line (of course one need to look at it in the correct context).
And for the Rikshawalla’s there are OSO and Samir et al. The lyrics in No Smoking and KKC are true to the plot and feel of the movie.

  5. niren on January 29th, 2008 1:48 am

    Dipankar !
    Thanks for sharing ur thoughts,
Words, or Thoughts ingrained in them never make the song complicated. For example chappa chappa charkha chale - sounds almost alien, but try to decipher it in the context of the film and characters around it…it will make perfect sense (and it was a big hit with all listeners). Most of the songs I ve mentioned are big hits, and the lines are unconventional yet it has ’shaayri’. Try to go through the list again - there are no difficult urdu words (which were quite common for hindi lyrics in 50’s-60’s), it just has the ‘richness’ of thoughts, exemplifying narrative of the film with some unconventional words. Richness of thought is not necessarily dependent on words -
ex.- Ye manzilein bhi khud hi tay kare, ye faansle bhi khud hi tay kare

    @Niren,
Good post and good “pick and choose” trend of the lines from the songs. Undoubtedly Music of NS is of very high standard and film’s box office performance has affected it but its temporary and for years people will recall this music which is rich in the use of both instrtuments and words.
Would that Director+Producer+ marketing team of NS were able to release the music atleast 6 months prior to the films release.
Gulzar saab is in full form and he gave much rich lyrics to Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
…aja chandni kootenge, asman ko lootenge
    :)

Giri…whats wrong…for rickshawvallahs sameersaab and everyone else is there. koi hamare liye likh raha hai to likhne do na!! aisa raag achanak kyun ched rahe ho…

my favourite….which i hav quoted many times here…when Johnny met Lagaa Chunari…naam kya hai tera…naaaam…Hi,i am natasha!!!
ok on a serous note, other than the ones thats listed here…jaage hai der tak, kuch der sone do,raat abhi baaki hai, subah to hone do…simple words, complex situation. beautiful.

  8. Jahan Bakshi on January 29th, 2008 4:32 am

I thought Rozana (Nishabd) was one of the best songs of the year with simple yet wonderfully evocative lyrics. Few other songs defined the essence of a film so well: “Kuchh Gaaun toh yaad aate ho…gungunaun to yaad aate ho…”

  9. Anindya on January 29th, 2008 7:36 am

Strange not to find Life in a Metro songs. They were very good.1)”In dino dil mera mujse hai keh raha,tu khwab saja…..hai tujhe bhi ijazat, karle tu bhi mohabbat.”2)Chupse se kahin dheema paon se…jaane kis jagah kis ghari…aage barh gaye humse rah mein par tum to abhi the yehi……superb.Best of this year.

  10. vishrant on January 29th, 2008 8:12 am

    just finished

    breath by kkd

life as much simplified as it can be :((

  11. K on January 29th, 2008 8:14 am

Naren, Aapne Virag Mishra omit kyon ki ? I thought his “lambi klambi belon se” was among the year’s best. Pehle para main woh sax = goes completely with the tune, pretty awesome

Phoenixnu, I heard thru backchannels that “jageh hain der tak, kuch der sone do” was basically Gulzar’s frustration with ARR, has nothing to do with Gurukanth or his character. See, ARR likes to sleep during day & wakes up at 9pm & works all night. Gulzar is a regular day guy like rest of us. So when Gulzar is forced to sit up all night & finetune the lyrics for ARR’s compos, you get stuff like “I’m awake all night, just let me sleep buddy”.

  12. ab on January 29th, 2008 10:02 am

    These one’s have really made 2007 special….

Dil..khudgarz hai..phisla hai yeh, phir haath se
Kal, uska raha..ab hai tera…is raat se! [:)]… [ Now does that not describe "love " wonderfully?]

Dil mein mere bas ja maine roka kab hai?
Lekin kya armaan hai mera..yeh toh samjhaane de..
Sajna se kaahe aaye laaj sajni?
Chhoone de ang mohe aaj sajni !!… [;) ][ Hyok Hyok...that's one bloody honest guy [:D]]

Khel ne vala khel rahe ba
Rok ne vala Fail rahe ba!! [look at the use of the word "fail" :)]
    Jo zyada madode mooch…
    Chaat le..jaake bhais ki poonch! [ :D][ :D]

But..the one that really takes the cake for it’s sheer simplicity… [:)]

Boom shaka laka everybody on u’r feet
The lady’s in d house feel complete
While the Guys say Shaka laka boom
Come on n everybody burn d room..
Shaka laka laka laka laka laka laka laka laka
    BOOM BOOM!!

  13. niren on January 29th, 2008 10:23 pm

I had mentioned my fav lines from life in a metro:
Ek chhat ke tale ajnabi ho jate hai rishte,
bistar pe chhadaro se chup so jaate hai rishte…

But, Sayeed Quadri deserves a mention for rendering urban pathos and heartache through his poetry. And mind you, most of those songs of life in a metro were written on compositions, that makes it even more difficult - imagine putting words on coposition like “Alvida” for instance, which is a kind of rock ballad.
    Good job !!

  14. Anindya on January 29th, 2008 11:02 pm

Sayeed Qadri is making a silent but powerful statement with his lyrics.Last year(2006) also he penned some wonderful lyrics for Gangster(Lamha lamha duri yuh bighalti hai, jaane kis aag mein yeh shabnam jalti hai) and Woh Lamhe(Bin tere kya hai jeena…..) and of course with the lyrics of Life …in a Metro he proves once again his potential.I would like to hear more songs penned by him

  15. Mithun Gangopadhyay on January 30th, 2008 12:33 am

Are there no takers for Billo rani ?
I watched the film only for the song.

  16. Dipankar Giri on January 30th, 2008 12:55 am

@ vikrant u mean to say that the situation which are already complex make it more complicated by adding complicated words to it…? here in hindi cinema there is a tradition to simplify the situation with the help of songs…whatever writing is going on today is reverse of this…it’s one of the reason why audience could not grasp certain scenes and sequences..the result reflects in the box office…u r talking abt ghalib..ghalib’s thoughts were very simple….”ye ishq nahi aasaan ek aag ka dariya hai..” n “ghalib chooti sharaab par ab bhi kabhi kabhi peeta hoo roze abr shabe mahtaab me..”..anyway Ghalib was not a lyricist ..sahir was..and u can c how successfully he dealt with the complex situations…more after i get free

  17. niren on January 30th, 2008 1:30 am

    By the way giri !
ye ishq nahi aasa is not ghalib’s ghazal, it belongs to mir taqi mir…
ik harf-e-mohabbat ka adana sa fasana hai
simte to dil-e-aashique faile to zamana hai
ye isq nahi aasan bas itana samaj lije
ek aaga ka dariya hai aur doob ke jaana hai…

anyways, neither ghalib’s thoughts were easy nor complicated, same applies to sahir’s thoughts, as i told u words can sound difficult because u dont know it - not thoughts, thoughts expressed in metaphorical language makes them subjective and pple can derive their own meaning out of it. And thats what we call “poetry”.
You can listen to sahir, shailandra, majhrooh, kaifi, jaan niasar akhtar, javed akthar, yogesh, niraj or gulzar….simple words with greater depths - but that never made them complicated or difficult.

  18. Dipankar Giri on January 30th, 2008 2:00 am

@ niren ..chapa chapa is more like “bumro bumro” n its not writeen by the lyricist..there are some situations where music director himself create some phonetic words… rehman has done them beautifully like “dam dada dam dada”….they are not lyrics…as far as the song “kyu khoye khoye ..” is inspired by Majaaj’s…

  19. Dipankar Giri on January 30th, 2008 2:15 am

sorry want to quote different sher ..the popular one “hazaro khwahishe aisi ki har khwahish pe dum nikale..bahut nikale mere arman par phir bhi kam nikale

  20. Dipankar Giri on January 30th, 2008 2:19 am

we should understand that urdu language itself is tough for those who does not know urdu…so it looks like complicated..while they are making hindi tough to understand for a laymen..

  21. Neeraja on January 30th, 2008 3:50 am

“Dil ko bana dein jo patang
Saanse yeh teri wo haawaien hain”

Is this supposed to be funny or romantic? or is there a deeper meaning?

  22. niren on January 30th, 2008 4:00 am

    Neerja !
its neither funny nor it has any deep meaning,
its just creative - thats all.

  23. Manjeet Singh on January 30th, 2008 5:06 am

    Agree with Dipankar here.
    Sahir sahab’s work remains unparalled!!
The difference in today’s and Sahir’s work is the flow in poetry and the gehrai(depth).
While hearing some of today’s songs, it appears as if someone has tried hard to give a tune to a screenplay composed of puesdo urdu words.
liked Gulzar’s sahab’s work in omkara, no smoking

  24. Phoenixnu on January 30th, 2008 5:10 am

@K…ha ha ha. thats funny. n ya might be true cz of the way rehman works.
    @Pavan…is it true ?

  25. Neeraja on January 30th, 2008 6:36 am

    @Niren
    Ok, if you say so!
But every time I listen to those lines, I laugh uncontrollably for at least a minute!

    @Dipankar
I thought ‘Bumro’ meant something like bhanwra in Kashmiri, may be not!

  26. bonchibuji on January 31st, 2008 1:24 am

hmm..we missed javed akhtar last year…

  27. Dal Fry with Mutton Biryani on the Side on January 31st, 2008 3:23 am

Bumbro means Bumble Bee in Kashmiri. It’s not a ‘made-up’ word.

I quite like the lyrics ‘dil ko bana de jo patang, saasein teri woh hawaeein hai’. I think the line is beautiful in its simplicity. There are a lot of songs that can make love feel like the most complicated thing in the world with one million and one layers…and in contrast there are many songs that make love look like its a mutual appreciation committee of people who look like various forms of nature.

Whatever happened to the flutter of the heart or the holding of the breath when you realize you are the happiest person in the world just by beeing close to him/her.

Or maybe you need an affinity for things like kites to appreciate the line. Growing up in Dubai, we used to take kites to the park in the summer. Playing with them was fun, seeing them flutter in the sky was great. But the best moment for me was when I let it go. Let it fly off. There is so much release in that moment that it would automatically make me sigh. (Oh god, I’m making this sound like an orgasm)

Very few things in life evoke the same feeling. Being close to a loved one in a total moment of understanding does it for me. You remember the lines, aapki nazron ne samjha, pyaar ke kaabil mujhe…dil ki har dhadkan theher ja, milgayee manzil mujhe. Kind of the same sentiments.

OK, so I love the line…so much… that I just wrote an essay on it. Great.

  28. Neeraja on January 31st, 2008 5:33 pm

    @Dal fry … ji!
    Thanks.
I agree that sometimes simple words can touch you magically.
I love kites! In fact I have asked people around me here, more than once, if they know how to fly kites. But yeah never had any orgasmic feelings attached to this whole kite flying affair :P
Anyway so I guess, that’s not the reason. I just find it very funny.

    @ab -
Sahi pakda hai boss — Shakalaka boom boom …

Sayeed Quadri - Thanx for O meri jaan(Utterly romantic) and Rishtey(Will give u the essence of the movie) …
    beautifully written …

Dil Dosti Etc’s much underrated track had some excellent lyrics esp dum laga with lyrics like
neeli filmain dekhne kyon jaate hain
deshprem main talli hoke desi daru peete hain
    :):):)
ALso another song Lamha ye jaayega kahan by a young lyricist Prashant Pandey stands out as one of the best songs of the year.
And then there is Gulzar saab in JBJ
    Yahin kahin shab kaatenge
    chillum chatai baatenge
    Man, that’s heaven!!!
