2008

The following are, in no particular order, a few hopefully good super hero movies that I anticipate will make my/our mainstream movie watching experience worth its buck!

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY

Guillermo del Toro returns, with the dark horse of this year’s comic-book movie, bolder bigger and better than its 2004 predecessor, to give the other superheroes a run for their money.

THE DARK KNIGHT

Nolan and all his key cast members are back (except for Mrs.Cruise, who, thankfully, has been replaced by Maggie Gyllenhall). Heath Ledger’s unfortunate passing, sadly, makes this his final farewell gift to the moviegoers. His reinvented joker is one scary psycho and is the darkest of them all. Can’t wait to see him beat (almost) our brooding superhero.

BABYLON A.D.

Vin D dropped out of windy s/Hitman to essay the lead role in this scifi thriller about the mercenary who’s hired to deliver a package (a genetically altered shapely woman) from post apocalyptic Europe(?) to another futuristic metropolis (NY, where else?).

Expect some action packed fireworks when Vin D meets Michelle Yeoh on the screen. More so, as Mathieu Kassovitz, the director, (the lead in Amelie and the bomb expert in Munich) has already proved his high-octane craftsmanship with the thriller Crimson Rivers, and the supernatural semi-horror Gothika.

The crew, on location, apparently had to deal with uncooperative weather, problems with set construction, and so on, courtesy the rough terrains they chose to shoot at.

Was it worth the pain?

Czech this out and decide:

HANCOCK

Willu bhayya is Supaman.. and he is a sarcastic drunk… and he’s homeless. He hires a spin doctor to get an image makeover; and then decides to have an affair with the wife of that public relations guy. Way to go!

The film was supposed to be called Tonight, He Comes, and the title was initially changed to John Hancock, and then later just to Hancock.

BTW, let me know who else thinks that the logo suffers from a Heroes cacoethes?

QUANTUM OF SOLACE a.k.a BOND 22

Quantum of Solace, the sequel to the 2006 film Casino Royale, which rebooted the James Bond film series, is due for release on October 31, 2008. The title was chosen from an unrelated short story in Ian Fleming’s For Your Eyes Only (1960). The teaser trailer will be unveiled on July 2, 2008 with Hancock.

IRON MAN

Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. Samuel L. Jackson is Nick Fury (although I don’t remember Nick Fury being black). Jeff Bridges is Iron Monger, and because it is a Marvel production we’d probably see Stan Lee in yet another dumb assed cameos.

What’s it with this guy? He even had his cartoon persona cameo-ing in Mosaic & Condor.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

Ang Lee’s HULK, in spite of the butch, was a bitch. An artsy fartsy flop. But now, with Louis “The Transporter” Leterrier helming the project, there is hope. With elegant Ed Norton and lively Liv Tyler, this hope has hope. Let’s see.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Ignore the Harry Potter-ish title, the Duck Tales-ish logo, and the fact that the lead character is a sexagenarian, and you might actually be able to enjoy this sexy comeback. Is Mutt the love child of Indy and Marion? We’ll know in May.

WALL-E

The most eagerly awaited movie, as far as I know.

Just look at the premise: WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth class) is a trash clean up robot, the last moving thing on Earth, singlehandedly working on his mission to clean up Earth and make it inhabitable again. Enters Eve, the robot that cames from space to keep tabs on his progress. And they fall in love!

Look at the pedigree: Written and directed by Andrew Stanton, the brains behind Pixar’s highest grosser till date.

Look at the teaser:

SPEED RACER

Speed’s goal of life is to win The Crucible. Why? Because he’s lost his brother to it.
With Wachovskis getting high on playing with their toys, the movie looks like a VFX orgy, colors, effects et al.

Mach GoGoGo psychedelic!

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM

Jackie Chan or Jet Li. Gong Fu rules!
Jackie Chan AND Jet Li? Gong Fu rocks!

Yes, the guys are joining forces, for the first time, to make this movie happen.

The internet sources say that the movie is about an American kid who finds a chinese wand in a seconds shop, which magically transports him to ancient China. There he meets Jackie and Jet and joins them in their mission of freeing up the King. Whatever! Who cares? Kill the subs and watch the moves.

    “It belongs to a Museum!”

Looking forward to Indiana Jones and WALL-E.

And an Indian super-hero movie… Drona!

  2. adhik on April 1st, 2008 5:58 am

I think Drona would be a disaster, primarily, because Abhishek lacks the body-language of a super hero.

  3. Neeraja on April 1st, 2008 7:56 am

Drona is a superhero movie! :O

  4. Honhaar Goonda on April 1st, 2008 8:11 am

Why not, Neeraja? Anyway, whatever I have read of the movie (on wiki), it seems Drona is a super-hero movie… If Krrish can be classified as a super-hero movie, then why not Drona?

  5. adhik on April 1st, 2008 8:13 am

    Unfortunately, Yes!

  6. ashwin on April 1st, 2008 8:15 am

drona is a superhero comic book F-X caper…according to the director….

with Abhishek as the hero and KK as the Anti Hero..

abhishek’s look in the movie seemed to be interesting….

    Interesting. very.
Hellboy II somehow looks like missing the quieter fun the first one was.
    Dark Knight, enough said.
Hancock: a ‘wow’ flick for me. will watch it for will and the fact that I never quite liked Superman.
Wall-E: too gimmicky for me, i am sure this is gonna be played a million times at home. the protagonist looks too ice age.
Indiana Jones: nah, at first. knowing spielberg he may bring back the old fun. never saw war of the worlds.
iron man: anything downey jr does is an essential watch.ditto for norton and hulk.
babylon: couldnt see the trailer. plot sounds fun.not too fond of Vin D.
Speed racer looks like cars on acid. should be fultoo fun.

WB, I jumped to comments when I saw HG’s comment on Drona (just google the name!) but now that I have gone through the post, my picks are Wall E and of course The Dark Knight.
Nice post. You guys should do such posts once in a while so that I don’t have to go anywhere but PFC to find out about upcoming movies :)
