was just about to recommend if the concerned people should release Paanch maybe on web … maybe something like PFC itself… anyways a chunk of the viewers of Paanch log into this site anyways… maybe a “Premier” section, pay an upcharge for watching the movie… the hits will increase for PFC, the movie makers would reap some money for the movie, audience can get the original print to watch, anyways its better than spending on distributors getting it to theaters, and expecting mass audience to watch a movie that was to release years back … at least here people can watch it from home… gets viewership, and everybody can be happy… wt sez?

Forget Taran Adarsh. He’s unreliable. Mid-day and Indiatimes gave 4.5 and 5 stars. There are people who couldnt digest the truth. Because many (most) of us end up like Chatur Ramalingam. While many of us have accepted this, there are many who have taken umbrage. Tanul and Magik’s post at PFC and rediff reviews are testimony.

Ha ha. m loving it. Taran is the last person i believe for past some time. PFC hasn’t written a thing. ToI ratings are not SO great, though they’re ok. but then giving a full five reduces credibility a bit sometimes as u look more like a fan than critic. Anupama Chopra’s review on NDTV is still awaited and Raja Sen n the other guy at rediff give it 2! Baradwaj Rangan is of course not yet on the scene. 3 idiots is certainly entertaining with its reviews. Until I write mine this evening.

Saw the movie today. Was completely disappointed.
Such shallow portrayal of life at hostel and college and that too at one of the best in the country!! Ragging scene of munnabhai was fun but here it was complete put off.
I loved the scene where Raju tries to show the importance of practical knowledge over just mugging up theoritical concepts. Was a bit extended but well executed. Looked like a homage to one of the greatest inventors the world has ever known – Edison. But I would also like to add that its impossible to get into IIT by mugging. Students of IIT might not want to become an Engineer, but what unites each one of them is the fundamental grasp of concepts, which is a mandatory to clear JEE. However, I do agree that in IIT people concentrate more on marks rather than on learning. But then the learning that takes place in a IIT hostel is unmatched.
Raju needs to lauded for his vision but I would also like to say that the India of Raju Hirani doesn’t exist.

Learning? Yaar hostels mein to kewal bakar hoti hai. And things ultimately come down to mugging only which any 10th pass can do so no point of such rigorous exams. Many people cant adapt to this situation before and after these qualifying exams because they are not good at mugging. There are many cases where people cracked CAT but couldn’t go because they didnt clear their own courses in Engineering.

Waise, I’m not interested in watching this movie but I’d like to know how they have shown the things like hostels etc.. I once stayed in kumaun hostel of IITD for a month and the situation there- for drinking water you would have to come to the ground floor from the fourth one. If the tap didnt work go to some other hostel for water. Commodes used to overflow and the water for bath used to be so hot (in summer) that you had a fear of getting heat stroke. Interestingly as far as I know this was also the hostel of Chetan Bhagat.

3 idiots is devoid of any such scene which you have mentioned. In fact, the whole college setting and hostel setting looked completely fake to me.
And I disagree ki hostel main sirf bakar hoti hai. The kind of activity which we used to enagage ourselves in was exhilrating. I just can’t imagine doing so many things in a single day now. And the biggest gift which I got from my hostel was the oceanic collection of movies. Even today, I ask my juniors to send across hard disks of newly added collections. And for the bakar – I used to enjoy those too. I spent the best 4 years of my life with those not so clean bathrooms and mostly dirty rooms. I was hoping to see such scenes. Perhaps, I was not the target audience of this movie.

The suspension of disbelief must be within the limits and Boliwud directors are very much obsessed with the flamboyance, showing everything hunky-dory which they find trivial and not necesaary to the narration but it does contribute towards building to the story and adds credibility. Though, after watching the movie, these things can be defended by logic but still in the end it is just the lack of detailing on the directors part.

And Jahanpanah, we needed those moments like your Kumaun hostel experiences in the film. This was almost like a Yashraj film at some points, and a David Dhawan film at others. I suspect a certain rumored ghost director interfered because this cannot be directed by someone who gave us Munnabhai 2.
But such is life.

Make no mistake; this one will reap money by the dozen.But there will be a minority section like mine which would return disappointed. To put it blankly, after the movie was over, I was confused – about whether there was something seriously wrong with me that I couldn’t enjoy it or was the movie was below expectations for me. Well may be the condition of the hostels are even worse. May be the ragging is ever worse. But who is going to come out in open and speak about it. The ragging in engineering colleges is something totally different from the medical college as shown in MBBS.

One question :
Do you think this movie would be liked by American audiences? I am planning to take along a few of my American friends and am not sure whether they would be able to enjoy/identify with the movie. Being an engineer myself I can definitely identify and hence I guess would get the ‘deeper’ jokes and satires, but will they as someone never being part of our educational setup or society be able to enjoy? Lemme know. Thanks.

I think not because a lot of jokes are rather enjoyable by an Indian audience. The most hilarious joke of the movie needs knowledge of Hindi.
Also they would identify with this kind of race at school level, but when it comes to making career related decisions, they are quite independent.
If you want to show it as an example of how and why you, An Jo, has had talent in something else but ended up being something totally different, go for it.

A fun filled entertainer that will keep you smiling for most part,but certainly no where close to as good as the Munnabhai series.There are quite a few ROFL moments as well in the film.What was especially disappointing was the complete lack of “actual college & hostel ” situations.Come on after being on IIM-B for 5 weeks if they couldnt capture the college life & hostel life authentically, its a pity.
And why did Boman Irani have to be shown as a caricature???Aamir,Maddy & Sharman do pretty well & Kareena has very less screen time here.

Loved it for what it was. Thing with Rajkumar Hirani is that he knows what he wants to make. He does not make films for film festivals, for depicting reality, for awards or for recognition by critics. He makes films because he has something to say and he chooses a way to say that in a way that it reaches to the maximum audience.
I am very sure that if Hirani chooses to depict just realism and compromise on the entertainment value, he can make most of so-called realistic filmmakers hide in shame. Campus Life is very important in 3 idiots but the film is not about campus life. Rather it is about the larger picture about our education system. I read somewhere that Rancho is not a character but a philosophy. Just like character played by Boman Irani represents all that is not well with out education system. I belive Raju Hirani is more intelligent than all of us here and all other filmmakers simply because he knows what he does, does it in a superlative manner and does not believe in competition. He epitomises the line “Choose Excellence Success Will Follow.” Just like Aamir does.

Did you see one problem with Boman Irani’s character as compared to similar character in MBBS? Here his character only has black shade until very late in the movie whereas in MBBS he was an endearing father and a very able doctor as well. In 3i he was more traditionally villainous. I wonder why that development could have happened.

Regarding, the emotional content, this movie is nowhere close to the Munnabhai series, which boasted of amazingly subtle yet poignant drama whereas 3 idiots goes the melodramatic way. All Izz Well is no match to Jaadu ki Jhappi & Gandhigiri.
But, the comic scenes are Howlarious… Trust me. You will be in splits most of the time. Far better than the usual trash Akshay, Priyadarshan type movies.

Best feel-good film of the year. Hirani is the real hero of this film. Aamir is at his mischievous best, its Rancho in the film & not Aamir. Everyone in the cast is superb. The music goes hand-in-hand with the film. Cinematography is good (freaking brilliant when it is Laddak & Shimla).
There is no 4.5 rating here, hence the 4. A must-watch film.

A large section of the media is going bonkers about Boman Irani’s character being too caricatured. The whole movie damn it, was an assortment of caricatures built only so that could it could positively supplement this ‘Joan of Arc’ like character of Rancho.
And Aamir Khan playing one of his many many eunuch-like characters is such a pain to watch. Not just a disappointing fare, but also an extremely dishonest one.

I liked the movie. Yes, it has caricatured the characters of the characters but there is nothing dishonest in this. Jahanpanh and Aditya mani jha are few people who are here from IIT will agree about cynicism shown by teacher on academics. There are people with slight mindset (dilute in imposition on others) of Virus out there. And I see this as a really good film on our education system.

Though it was a good watch. I am not satisfied with the characters and their pies in the story.
It was heavily loaded towards Amir and other 2 idiots remained idiot till the end. The movie should have been named “2 Idiots and Mr. Wangdu”
If you read the novel 5 point someone, you find a perfect balance between characters. All three were five pointers and got below average placements and therefore kept the theme intact. Here you find Amir topping the placements and also playing emotionally allover.
This wasn’t the way Amir’s movies used to be, consider Dil Chahta Hai, where other two stars had some tale to share. In TZP, the kid had a strong role to play and due importance was given to Mother and some teachers. In this movie its Amir allover.
Anyhow the movie was entertaining enough apart from some cliched jokes and scenes.

I saw 3 idiots yesterday.It is excellent and Hirani must be complimented for brining about the limitations of the Indian education system in a very interesting manner. One of the main themes of the movie according to me is “follow your heart” Only problem is that in movies, they are not always able to show all aspects of the problem. For instance, many people come to know what is their cup of tea(enjoy doing) only after they start working(In work, we have the possibility of discovering ourselves) and for many, it is too late by then as India does not have structured career trasnsition. “All is well” is not really so in real life. I have twenty one published articles on the subject which are on my blog- Make your passion your profession which also has quotes on the subject from bollywood, cricket, management and other personalities in the quotable quotes section.

1.5, the movie was neither entertaining nor have something new, rather had some very crappy moments which were shot in a subtler manner compared to regular flicks, which guess makes them okay to watch, but overall nowhere great… Guess to me its Rocket Singh this year, as the dosage of “self help, realisation in self” in a masala movie for this year…

I was personally insulted by the caricaturisation of the bad characters in the first half, during which time I was also thinking ‘take out these two sideys and focus on this unassuming Aamir Khan character’. But good thing, I suppose, that it will get masses thinking (AK character makes sense when he speaks). Danger: over-caricaturisation will make guilty parties feel good about themselves.
Second half just focuses on these three, and that’s where Raju H. wins me over.Haven’t been emotionally jerked around so well in some while.
Madhavan’s criminally underused, mostly because CB created an eminently ordinary character.
About the credit controversy, I think CB is far off into territory of right, because movie uses essentially same characters, with same character dynamics, in a similar plot. Major differences are that AK character is topper, some of the face-offs in first half, and the future timeline.
And who gets girl.
Also, first time I saw what a potent plot lies under the horrible book.

First of all , i did not know why Aamir was casted, i mean he enacts the role well, but i guess they could have taken a younger actor to potray the role.
The length of film was another sore point.There were scenes which made me laugh, but did not make me think or touch my soul like munnabhai did.
It may be one of biggest hit in career of Rajkumar, but not one of the best he made.

i was very disappointed with this one. only one scene made me laugh (chamatkar – balatkar one). rest of the time they were trying so hard, but falling flat. Aal Izz Well sounds so ridiculous when they keep on saying it over and over and over and over…….you get the point. Aamir was so over the top, it seemed his face was glued to that goofy smile expression all the time. In so many scenes it felt that Aamir was trying to do a mimicry of himself, just the way they do it on the countless laughter shows. The book is much better than the movie.

Well all these outstanding reviews did make me go and watch the movie but I was kind of disappointed I guess the over-hype killed it. In the end it turned out to be a ok movie with nothing extra outstanding as was claimed. I think Munna Bhais were a lot better if compared to 3 Idiots.

Watched the movie a few days ago and still keep thinking about it. Will definitely own the DVD once it comes out.
Though the movie is loosely based on the book; the director and screenplay writer have changed the essence and message completely.
Chatur…aka Omi Vaidya was a gem and should go places.

Preachy, pushy and generous doses of slapstick involved. I had been hearing such rave reviews, but Munnabhai movies were infinitely better. The film had a major MBBS hangover but could never muster up the organic soul of the film. Jokes were stale and trying too hard to get a laugh.

Aakhirkaar dekh he li. Kuch khaas nahi. Madhyantar tak theek thi uske baad ek he tarah ke drishyon ki punravritti hone se film kaafi naatkeeye lagne lagti hai.
Mujhe to aashcharya ho raha hai ki PFC ke prabuddhjano ko yeh film itni kaise bhaa gayi ki unhone ise 5 mein se 4 aur 5 ank tak de daale hain.

4.5 from me. I didn’t go in with any expectations as I didn’t see any trailers and I was looking to be entertained.
I was thoroughly entertained. Says something good about the Indian education system too.
However, I will have to take out .5 for birth thing and he bride running away from the “altar”.

If ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ was made like ’3 Idiots’:
1. Munna would’ve topped each exam thru his natural genius and not thru the copying act of bawa Doctor
2. He would’ve operated on Bawa Doc’s dad and jimmy shergil to get them up and running in no time
3. For these operations,he would have received SMS from Gracy Singh and done them impeccably = got them to open their eyes post-anaesthesia, by murmuring “Bole to…jaadu ki jhappi” in their ears
4. He would’ve got Circuit and other gang members to start studying for 12th as he would’ve given circuit gyaan on following his heart and studying rather than breaking peoples’ bones
5. He would’ve got his MBBS degree -and Dr.Asthana would’ve given his scalpel(gifted to him by his guru 42 years back) to him for an new innovation in medical sciences.
that can be extended to LAge Raho too….and let us see how many of u would ‘ve applauded this version!
I guess I would rather look at the bright side…and hope Raju Hirani gives us the subtle commentary of munnabhai with the slapstick and senti doses rather than the commercial pav bhaji of 3 Idiots…toilet humour, glorification of aamir, unidimensional caricature of profs,(boman irani looking terribly typecast in his varied roles), vacuum cleaner scene and needless meandering dialogs posing as messages are my top five grouses. come to think of it, the movie seems to be delivered in the same way as the bawling baby in the end scene…a pat on the butt from BO saying ‘all izz well’, but seemingly delivered to the instructions of someone at the other end of a phone line. Rajubhai….take care.

Finally saw the movie, it’s definitely over rated, I liked it in parts, I liked the dark humor which I felt was it’s only saving grace.
Hirani definitely blew this one with his over the top scenes, which reminded me of Karan Johar. And what’s with Aamir’s messiah complex, he sounds like Moses out on a biblical crusade every time he opens his mouth and seems like his characters can’t go wrong either…ever.

Overall good movie on a different concept. Works well watching with a group in theater. Know friends who agreed to watch it twice.
Aamir’s role is overly-dominant.
About the controversy with Chetan Bhagat, the movie only has parts from the book, and is overall different from the book. That it even says in the end credits “Based on the Book Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat” is it itself a generous gesture.

Err, perhaps too late, but yes, an entertaining film, but never expected a fart joke – filmy flick from Raju hirani.. The movie is worth watching for the balatkaar scene, freaking hilarious
Otherwise disappointing movie, same ol’ munnabhai template, with a lots of heroic boost to aamir’s character and sometimes even wondered if I’m watching a david dhawan flick..
Anyways, it’s worth watching, you will be entertained, go with very-low expectations..
