3 Idiots — All Izz Not that Well
Saurabh | Review | November 12, 2009 at 6:37 am

The music of one the most anticipated film of the year is out now and just like the style of music launch strived to connect with the youth , the music also aims to do so . Looking at the cast , my memories of RDB got refreshed and I started thinking why did the music of RDB worked ? Everyone knows why it worked , the lyrics and music was great and most importantly it connected with the YOUTH which was the primary aim . The youth could identify itself with the confused lot of friends and lyrics like “ke aag hai mujh mein kahi” did their job . And of course it was a Rahman Soundtrack afterall .
In this review(or whatever) , I am not going in the order in which the song appears on the soundtrack , rather I am going with my preference of tracks from the album . The track that I think will connect the most with the youth is “Give Me Someshine” . A very simple track yet the simplicity is what will strike . Suraj Jagan comes back with this track after “Zehreele” . If he sang that one on a screamy pitch this one is completely opposite and much lower in pitch . Though the rock feel is still there but more of soft rock . He is brilliant even here and he is not ONLY meant for a Hard Rock or Metal songs .The way he starts the track is probably a first in our music scene . Very simple english lyrics like “Give me another Chance , I wanna grow up Once Again” is what will work and this is one feeling that almost everyone has hence would also connect to an extent. Giving Jagan a great company is Sharman Joshi who speaks these lines in between which are really nice and the way he speaks is even better . Lines like ,
“Kandhon ko Kitabon ke bojh ne Jhukaya ,
Rishwat Dena to Khud Papa ne sikhaya,
99% marks laaoge to ghadi varna chhadi ”
Apart from guitars, the song also features Harmonica towards the end which reminded me of TZP’s (Taare Zameen Par) background score so so much . Overall it’s a nice song and my favourite from the entire album . Both Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire have together done a decent bit of job with this one .
Probably Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkmar Hirani got so awed with “Bande Mein Tha Dum” that Sonu Nigam features on three out of five tracks on the album and “Zoobi Doobi” is one of them . It also features Shreya Ghoshal . Together they can never go too wrong and even an average song coming from them sounds much better . This track would obviously have a dream like retro situation and hence it has been also composed in the same way . What looks like from the album covers is that Aamir and Kareena would try to create some comic situation by mimicking the stars of yesteryear . Regarding the style of Singing both Shreya and Sonu have attempted something like this even before so it doesn’t really sound completely new . They are good with singing in old style and hence manage to do it effortlessly . The track is nice but I expect a whole lot more when Sonu and Shreya come together . The lyrics are not that fun but still are good enough to hold the song . It would look nice in the film along with a situation . Though it does sound retro but it still didn’t manage to really impress me that much .
“All Izz Well” is the song that was there in the promos . The soundtrack also begins with this song only . It has been composed with an intention that it becomes an Anthom like song amongst the youth but sorry guys I wasn’t impressed with it at all . Sonu Nigam has disappointed hugely and even though he is one of my all time favourites he didn’t really impress me at all in this one . The lyrics are simple yet not that catchy in my opinion and I think apart from “Are Bhaiya All Izz Well…” people are not going to remember much of it . I also have a feeling that this song would be used a whole lot in the background score of the film , not sure if that will work . Though the tune and whistling is nice enough and hence the song would work largely but definitely fails to impress.
Then there is “Jaane Nahi” again by Sonu which is very over the top and emotional . The flow of the song is a bit like an “Arti ” in the parts where it has a normal pitch with the use of “Manjhire” . The song is a whole lot emotional and I hope it gets the situation sad enough else it would be just a song where Sonu cries out loud . This song also leads me to believe that this film might have all kinds of emotions in it for the general audience and hence would probably work on the box office . The lyrics are not something exceptional and neither is the music on this one . This song is just for the sake of film and would work there only . Sonu can sing songs like these even though they are difficult . So , no extra points to him for this .
Lastly , “Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh” is a slow track that strangely seemed to me a bit similar to “Jaane Nahi” in terms of composition and the use of “Manjhire” is present here too . The song would appeal most to Shaan fans and he sings in his typical style . I think the song is about Aamir’s character in the film . Rarely comes track where a guy is praised by another guy/s so it is different in that manner .
Apart from these tracks there are also two remixes which are the usual .
Overall , its a soundtrack that doesn’t impress that much and might just work in the film . The soundtrack won’t get film much publicity which it doesn’t need anyways . The soundtrack depends a whole lot on the film and it won’t hamper the film . Though it is also not strong enough to save the film either if it turns out to be a bit weak . Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire have failed to an extent and haven’t given their best . Comparing to soundtracks of Hirani’s previous two films this one is definitely much weaker . It’s neither outstanding nor it is terrible . It is somewhere in between .

i had the same feelin when i heard it the first time..in fact i thot it ws boring..but within 2 days the album has grown on me tremendously..Zoobie Doobie..Behti Hawa Sa..Jaane Nahin Denge(sonu nigam is simply brilliant here!) are the pick of the album..i think Zoobie Doobie is goin to be big n will b one of the songs that will remain in minds fr long (audio-wise & video-wise)…Aal Izz Well & Give Me Some Sunshine arent far behind as well..Give Me Some Sunshine arrangement reminds me of Sutta Na Mila..overall I think ‘Aal Izz Well’ & the songs will only get better once the film is out & im hopin its good as hell
if you have a look at Soundtrack Pro software’s interface, you will find an existing loop which is identical to the initial acoustic guitar part of “ke aag hai mujh mein kahi”..
Rehman also copies..
Gourav, that particular loop may be a commercially available loop.
@gourav : well if you are talking of inspiration then Rahman did it long back also .. I mean “Mustaffa Mustaffa” is a lot like “Sussana” … but that doesn’t take away anything from the fact that he is a pure GENIUS .. so dont blemish his name by saying that he copied …. every creative person gets inspired by someone else and that impression lies somewhere in the subconcious for a long time which does sometimes comes out in his own creations … its not like he always does it ..
yaar saurabh and syed… if Rahman copied, then he did na… all that Gaurav said is that the tune is similar, I possibly have a few songs that I know he directly copied… personally I dont care if anybody copied anything or not, till it is good which his songs have been, the only thing I want to know is, where does the question of ‘blemish’ come into picture… so even Pritam’s songs are well composed, copied yes, but as you said “how he does it” pritam does a good job as well … so not taking away anything from Rahman, but why not have the same question when others have ‘copied’ … shouldn’t the spade be called a spade everywhere?
Something funny on Pritam
http://www.heartbeatoftheearth.com/2008/01/20/a-day-with-pritam-chakraborty-a-fans-dream-comes-true/
super…
@Gaurav Dosh
dude if u think everything or every genius is super original then its not..every artist needs a reference point/inspiration or whtever one wants to call it..even ppl like who do their daily jobs need reference point to get thru..mahesh bhatt once said nothin is original except God..i buy that..bappi lahiri, pritam, annu malik & rahman can make a tune out of a same source but wht counts is that how each one of them do it..dnt make a big deal out of it..Rahman is a genius but a mere mortal..good luck
i agree Munis
very well explained…we all are copycats right from birth..initially we copy our parents, siblings, friends, etc in our day to day life
Ofcourse inspiration has to come from somewhere
Regards
movies in Bangalore
movies in Chennai
movies in Mumbai
ok I want to quote here something that once RGV said in an interview(Or on his blog) that — “They say that ceativity is knowing how to hide your sources”
@PS
who r u talkin to brother?..gaurav or us..exactly..he just said tune is similar..we also know abt many instances like that bt no need to bring it up..whts the intention?..the music that comes in the startin titles of RDB is ‘copied’ frm an arabic number i think but Rahman played on that brilliantly..the point is why bring it up..my point is – Rahman is genius but is nt above human ‘weaknesses’
@syed … yep agreed, and there are quite a few numbers which ARR has picked up from arabic songs… I got no issues with them… the deal m trying ask is why ask intentions when a question on ARR, or rather when a Q is on somebody we consider as our favorites.. m pretty sure nobody would have asked for intentions or raised an issue that gaurav is trying to blemish the artist if the artist in question was say even Pritam… for that matter Anu Malik himself has composed some real good music, which were his own… why does the question of intention or blemishes not come up to anybody who might mention this about AM… thats my deal yaar… why react in almost an impulse when these talks are picked about everybody, but we would rather hush it down in some people’s cases and not in some other’s…
@ps well you are right and i impulsively used that word blemish , i probably shouldn’t hav .. maybe his(gaurav) use of word “copies” lead me to it ..
Hey no worries saurabh…
the only point I was trying to drive is visible in the “paa” post … that why would we need to distinct between subjects to decide on what light would we want to talk about it… till we keep putting in competitve debates, we should be good… its the minute when we start saying, that this cannot be tolerated, we start moving into the “thakeray/fatwa” zones…. your point well taken, and completely clear on the intentions
…
In all album carries a huge hangover of ‘Parineeta’..specially ‘Jaane nahin denge’!
Just finished listening to the songs. Don’t think we should be comparing these songs to those of RDB. RDB songs are richly layered, complex arrangements and the songs by themselves took a life of their own in line with the dramatic nature of the film. From the promos, 3 Idiots looks like a total fun film with an underlying message subtly delivered Hirani Style. The songs seem to be very much in sync with the mood of the movie.
All Iz Well: Beautiful song to open the album. Very zippy and lyrics stand out! Who is this lyricist guy? Never knew about him before. Sonu sounds decidedly different in this song.
Behti Hawa: Shaan is his usual sweet self in this song. This is an interesting experiment where the background score is very sober bordering on the melancholic, but Shaan sings it with a tinge of playful zest. This song should have stood out if not for the traces of “ye Hawaayein” from Parineeta.
Give me Sunshine: Anthem of the movie! Starts with nice guitar strums followed by a mix of dialogues and singing. Very Rehmanisque composition. Sure to bring memories of Roobaroo even though there is no similarity in tunes.
Jaane Nahi Denge Tujhe: Over the top Sonu and Shantanu must have composed this in the Aangan of his Soona Man. I don’t know if I will like it after repeated listening, but my instinct was to tell Hirani to edit out this song from the movie. Somehow, this doesn’t fit in with the rest.
Zoobi Doobi: Chirpy song and another day at work for Sonu and Shreya. Catchy tune and this is the only duet in the album. People may end up listening to this Pal Pal Pal Har Pal over the new few days :-)
You might actually like this album if you listen to this without any expectations (I know it is hard). Personally, these songs while don’t help hype the movie any further, might be just what is needed for a film like this.
I second the opinion. Music is plain average. I am listening its track for last 2 dayz and finally deleted them. Nothing special and dint connect.
Lyrics are forcefully simple and pretend to be cool and thats where they fail. and to my ears music also didnt sound anything sweet or great !!
average show !
i agree with you that it just pretends to be cool… they hav really tried very hard to do that..
listening to the songs made me feel like i am eating a very thanda pizza that too with extra cheese. 10 thumbs down. total let down.
your comment really sums it up bro
… thanda pizza with extra cheese and a really hard base ..
ok i obviously cannot write a post for a single song so I want to share this track with you guys . I was just surfing thru channels on TV and I heard this track on UTV Bindaas in a prog called Big Switch … The track is really cool and my best wishes are with the composer whoever he/she is . he/she has done a good job with it … here’s a link to the song from the show’s website so its not Piracy
..btw the song is about rich spoilt brats …
http://www.bindass.com/bigswitch/download-file.php?type=ringtone&file=Switch Final Track.mp3
the link hasn’t come out properly .. copy the entire thing in the adress bar and hit enter ..then it will work ..
hey…the song is composed by Amit trivedi of dev d fame…
yeah it does sound like a Amit trivedi composition … i heard it once again after you mentioned it …. btw how did you find out and are you sure …. good composition anywaysand i have no doubt that the day is not far when he will compose a blockbuster album ..
wut about kurbaan? u cud have done a joint review bro… even that has just a little to write home about. i have liked just the title track and that’s about all. anyways, keep up the good work.
You didn’t like Rasiya?
Is it also on the wrong lines :D
I also liked just shukran allah from Kurban ..rest is just mediocre .. I would definately do joint reviews in future .. i also liked “Aao Wish Karein’s” soundtrack .. its a simple and nice album with no frills ..
@PS
i dnt know..i didnt start the blemish thing..maybe ppl dnt care abt Pritam or Anu Malik coz they hv an image of being copying & maybe coz they do it more than others n many of their big hits r lifted tunes..maybe coz of that..i cnt say..Rahman is definitely way ahead than them in terms of experimenting with the music & he has a certain image that he must live up to..though his last outing BLUE ws a below average album..Rahman has more pressure upon him than pritam or anu malik & thats a tough ask
as far as 3 idiots’ music is concerned i think its nt as bad as ppl here r makin out to be..as i said earlier i too found it quite regular in the begining but it has grown on me..yes its nt groundbreaking or earth shattering good but thats fine..i think it has some really nice ‘typical bollywood’ numbers & sonu nigam is brilliant in it..we always talk abt music directors..i think sonu nigam is the most accomplished singer of our time & is in the same league of Rafi & Kishore Kumar..moreover the music of 3i is situational so i feel it will only catch up once the movie is out & is good/big hit
i agree with you that sonu is definately the most accomplished singer of our time and there is no one who has sung such variety of songs as he has amongst his contemporaries … but Sonu hasn’t really done something specialin this album , i am sure you would also agree ..
Depends yaar Syed… there are going to be times that Anu Malik is going to be frustrated as any good music he composes is going to be dismissed as its an AM composition … so you never know the kind of expectations out of him… rest I agree with your points…
I was just listening to the tracks, maybe not that great….but I kind of like them, definitely have a repeat value. “All Izz” is funny and “Jaane Nahi denge” is sung well with lot of meaning.
Well I think Hirani and Moitra have never before given any great music. Both the Munnabhai songs were very average. I think Hirani should take some tips from Vishesh films. The Bhatts have an exceptional ear for music. Does not matter if their films work or not, their music almost never disappoints. Anyways was expecting an avg soundtrack but turns out its just not good enough. Cmon Aamir, where were your creative inputs this time???
I wont agree with you on the part that they were very very average …”dekh le” and “chhan chhan” were good and in the second one also “Pal Pal” and “Bande Mein Tha Dum” were good …
ditto the first comment!!! The entire structure of ‘give me some sunshine’ is the same as sutta na mila!! Even the way the song ends!!
Listen to both the songs back to back and you”ll be surprised!!
shantnu moitra is a man of a very limited creativity.all most all his song sound silmilar(may be because of too much obsession with sonu nigam).i cant remember any unforgatable ballad besides ‘rang heena likhna’ from mr.moitra.so to expect something new or hummable from him is a useless anticipation..
Shantanu Moitra’s music is generally very good. Haazaron Khwahishen Aisi, Yahaan, Parineeta betoken his class. However, this album is a total let down. The only song that I liked in the album, “Give me some sunshine” seems a poor cousin of “Sutta naa milaa”. Where are the Zeest guys??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWILsGkqWCA&feature=related – Sutta naa Milaa
People totally ignored scintillating music like ‘London Dreams’ and they are discussing this trash!! Strange! ‘3 Idiots has a very very ordinary track and ‘Aal is Well’ sucks. It’s the most irritating song of the year. Third rate album!
true that.
Really disappointing one..Really miss Jatin Lalit and JJWS..Even though they have split, they may still may be able to come up with far better stuff than this crap…In the world of good for nothing MDs like Shantanu Moitra and Vishal Shekar,no wonder ARR is still ruling..
Well, to be fair, none of the two Munnabhai movies had great music. But the songs fit well into the narrative. This one could be similar – lets see how the music is used in the movie.
I agree it is definitely not an album that you would buy for its own sake.
agreed to your point… both Munnabhai movies had songs fitting into the narratives which made them much more enjoyable after seeing the context in the movie…. it might be the same case with 3I
