3 politicians back in to the films – Wake up Hindi film Industry !

Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna and Govinda have one thing in common. All the three are members of parliament and have registered their come back in the films in last 6 months.
Dharmendra : He has registered his accomplished work in the history of hindi cinema. He gave successful films belonging to different categories. He was equally good in the role of police officer as he was in the role of a bandit or a thief. He was equally good in comedy as he was in emotional role. He was soft in romantic roles and looked so violent in action packed roles. Not only one of the most handsome male actors of hindi cinema but he remains as one of the most talented actors of the hindi cinema also. Audience (male/female or kids), rushed to see the magic of this “He Man” of hindi cinema. He was so smooth in his performances that he was not compared with anyone. Perhaps it was his longevity and solid status in the hindi films that he was never compared with the Super stars of 70s, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Vinod Khanna was seen as competitor to AB but Dharmendra and his place remained without any threat or comparison. He made nice impression in small role in Anurag Basu’s “Life in a Metro”. And now he is coming in Anil Sharma’s “Apne” which stars also his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Dharmendra looked in full form at IFFA festival and no wonder if he carries “Apne” forward entirely by his old charisma. He gave clue in Metro that he has not lost his command over his skill of acting.
Vinod Khanna : though he had made his come back after 6 years of absence from hindi cinema with his film Insaaf in 1986-87 but he could not create the old magic again. But his come back happened at such time when very mediocre type of hindi films were happening and his partner of various super hit films, Amitabh Bachchan was also delivering Toofan, Ganga Jamnuna Sarsawti, Jadugar, Ajooba etc. Vinod Khanna was though welcomed in Insaaf and Satya Mev Jayate, but he was more liked in the advertisement of Cinthol bathing soap where he runs with horse on sea beach. Ad was able to produce his charming and attractive personality on screen.
One can hardly recall any film of Vinod Khanna in his so called third phase though many will vouch for his first phase films. In first phase of his filmi career he was playing villain’s roles and still one can recall his Mera Gaon Mera Desh. His second phase started with Guzaar’s Mere Apne and another film Imtihaan which made him hero in hindi films. Then happened several hits and critically acclaimed films like Shaq, Achanak, Inkaar etc. With Amitabh Bachchan he made a formidable pair and this pair gave many super hit films.
Now he is also back with “Risk” to play his fourth inning. He was the only saving grace in this film. He has always been having reputation of a fine actor who can perform with equal ease in regular commercial films and off beat films as well.
* * * *
Amitabh Bachchan is very active in the films and now two of his old associates have resumed films. Its now for film makers to search stories which can utilizes these three veterans and they are capable to create magic on screen. They created cinematic magic in their youth and it will be interesting to see what they do now when they have lived so much life and are enriched with lots of experiences.
It will be wonderful to see if films are made with these actors in lead role in pair and as these three actors never came in a single film, can it happen now? Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna in a single film!!! That should generate high voltage drama on screen. Hope some film maker gets this idea.
Hindi films dont have enough films where aged actors might have played lead roles and these three capable actors provide the opportunity that film makers come forward and make films based on aged characters. Its a time to exploit talent of these actors.
* * * *
Govinda :
Govinda is not as old but he is also starting again his new inning in hindi films. This actor created laughing riots on screen during his second phase of career. Though he is good in every kind of roles but this can be a pity that audience has given him success only in comedy based roles only. This actor was nominated in film fare awards every year and for him they created separate category, best actor in a comic role. He can have a heavy body but when he dances then he becomes dance himself. Only few can match with his dancing skill. He was already a dancing craze in Bombay before he joined film industry.
He is very good in art of mimicry but often he brings out his originality and he is unbeatable then. His last production Ssukh did not give him any Sukh and he had to bear a great financial loss. He got some solace when he was elected as Member of Parliament. But how long an actor can remain away from the acting.
Its clear that he does not understand scripts very well and that’s why he refused to do role in Subhash Ghai’s Taal, which later Anil Kapur did and he refused role of Chunni Babu in Sanjay Bhansali’s Devdas, which later Jacky Shroff did. Its not possible he had not seen Motilal playing role of Chunni lal in old Devdas of Bimol Roy. It was such a good role for him. Govinda did not want to do so-called second lead then and hence refused these supporting but powerful roles. But perhaps now he is more mature.
He shared screen with Akshay Kumar in Bhagam Bhag and these days Akshay Kumar is Comic hero number 1. But Govinda did good job and reminded his old days.
Govinda got small role in multi stories based Salam-i-Ishq and came out as best actor in the crowd of actors in the film. He is refreshed and has no hangover of past. He acted bit differently and generated great hopes.
It was pleasant to see his highly spirited dance at IIFA festival. Govinda is ready.

2007 has brought back these three actors in to the films and now its up to the film makers how they utilize these highly skilled actors.

Dharmendra and Govinda have handled comedy well but it is the funny streak of Vinod Khanna that has remained underutilised to date..His histrionics in Parvarish,Khoon-Pasina,are a treat to watch.
krysh: Vinod Khanna, though has not worked in an out and out comedy film but he is not devoid of this genre also.
Please watch him in Muqadar ka Sikandar (especially when he takes get up of a parsi man),
and when he asks Amitabh, Kya muamla hai. galon par bahut lali hai and AB shyingly replies, Abe mein Simla ka rehne wala hun, ye lali to bachpan se hai. [ Whats the matter, why this redness on your cheeks. Man, I belong to Simla and I have got red cheeks since childhood]
Amar Akbar Anthony(when he owns many musical instruments and sings with AB and Rishi Kapoor, anhone ko honee kar de) and The Burning Train, in first portion of the film when he and Dharmendra try to allure Parveen Bobby and Hema Malini respectively .
and few portion of Aap ki Khatir. Then there was Daulat where he acts like a blind man before Zeenat Aman. And I will be forgetting some other films as well where he has done comedy.
He has full skill in comedy also. He has got timing.
Only one has to make a film with him.:)
And Krysh, I forgot HeraPheri.
:d
Thats the point..he is good in comedy and roles have not been written doing justice to his range..And yes,Hera-Pheri is one of my favorites..Darbar mein upar wale kay andher nahin par deri hai, taqdeer ka sara khel hai ye aur waqt ki hera-pheri hai..he looks wow as a con sadhu-baba in this song..
Krysh: HeraPheri was a good comedy.
leave alone Monk dress which he has been wearing since long in real life also becasue of his spritual journey, he remained lady killer in any format he opted.
When he ran besides the horse in the ad of Cinthol soap, female hearts used to be stopped for some moments. Perhaps he is the only male actor in the world whose almost double chin, increases his beauty.
His screen presence is amazing.
It leaves me with astonishment that how Hindi film makers can ignore such fine actors like Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra?
Dharamji is one of my favourite most personalities in the film industry (not for the acting talent) but the kind of persona and charm he carries on his face.. one the the most lovable faces.. the best part of his personality is his maasoomiyat.. Even Dharam ji, the actor was mind blowing in two of my all time favourite films, Satyakam and Chupke Chupke.. I have seen them countless times and can still watch them a million times more..
Gulzar saab was once question in one of our live chats.. “Why did you opted for Dharmendra to play Devdaas in your version while you have great Sanjeev Kumar who can be play a better tragic actor and convey pathos better than Dharmendra”
Gulzar saab answered:
“Unfortunately I dont agree with you.. I was very close to the book.. the charm of SaratChandra’s Devdaas is the adolescence of the Devdaas, who never grew out of it… While the two women matured… Dharmendra was certainely a better adolescent romantic lover, which he still retains..”
He will always be…
——–
=>And now he is coming in Anil Sharma
Pavan:
Gulzar saab was so right. I liked immensely Sanjeev Kumar but I dont know if he was fit to play such roles where people have read about the character or some kind of historical character. See how he messed up in role of Majnu in Love and God.
Dharmendra was very good and he himself always wanted to play this role. Dont know why this film was shelved. Dharmendra had played a character whose demeanours are bengali in Anupama before and Devdas’s role was not very different from this one. He had played ideal, innocent man before and an ill man also. Only this time he had to show arrogance, wriggleness, impulsive indecisive nature and it could have been a progress journey for Dharmendra also. Alas! we dont have this version of Devdas.
I recall very well Zindadil. In childhood I always liked too much Rishi Kapoor’s 70s films. This film with Pran saab, I had liked immensely. Had not seen Rishi Kapoor before in double role. I still recall Pran saab’s cold shoulder to one of the Rishi Kapoor. and then it had beautiful Kishor Kumar and Shailendra Singh’s songs. I did not mind much in childhood pair of Rishi Kapoor with Rekha but now I think how I would find it and moreover in other pair Rishi was his most matching actress Neetu Singh.
I have not seen promo so cant say if Apne is remake of Zindadil.
RK bhai // Haath ki safai is another movie where VK’s role brings a touch of comedy, thanks to the fumbling Kapoor. BTW, other famous – known to be handsome – actors with cleft-chin credentials: Cary Grant, Kirk Douglas, George Clooney. That said, the one actor I’d like see being back in movies is the good old shotgun Sinha. Thanks for the jog down the memory lane.
Wb: sadly In Haath Ki Safai, I recall only one scene which can have some comic touch as far as Vinod Khanna is concerned. where he says to Randhir Kapoor(?) Beta tum jis school mein parh rahe ho hum wahan ke head master reh chuke hain (You are just a student of a school where I have been head master), Though I recall some comedy scenes of Randhir Kapoor and I recall one beautiful song of VK and Simmi Grewal, Vada kar le sajna,… and one song which Hema Malini sings perhaps only cabrette song Lata ji ever sang.
George Cloony always reminds me Kabir Bedi. Their faces resemble so much.
Shot Gun Sinha’s case is tough, till Rajnath Singh is BJP president he may be busy in politics. Though have heard that he is now in to the production of films which his wife handles. Considering this prospect I suppressed my temptation to mention his name along with two of his contemporaries.
>Vinod Khanna : though he had made his come back >after 6 years of absence from hindi cinema with his >film Insaaf in 1986-87 but he could not create the >old magic
His come back film was scheduled to be Mahesh bhatt’s Marg with Hema Malini.. but that could never got complete.. any info on that and the music of the film? anybody?
On his comeback there were two films that were racing neck to neck to be Vinod Khanna’s comeback film. The first was “Insaaf” as Pavan has rightly pointed out. The second was ‘Satyamev Jayate’ being directed by Raj N. Sippy, which was being copied from a Malayalam (i think) movie that was itself a copy/inspiration of Ardh Satya. But in the end Vinod gave Insaaf the time to complete and be released first since the team of Insaaf was the first that had approached him with a movie upon his comeback.
I’ll disagree about the magic with Pavan. Because when Insaaf was released there was this Vinod Khanna aura all over… and the movie was a hit. Very stylizedly directed in the typical Mukul Anand style… Insaaf was also a bonus for Shakti Kapoor who acted as Inspector Bhinde in the movie and was a rage. The story and script could go for a toss and there was nothing to talk about… but it was the late Mukul Anand who used Vinod Khanna’s onscreen presence and towering personality to the full core. And it was in Insaaf that Mukul first displayed his penchant for white… two scenes that stand right out… pointing to Vinod’s towering persona on screen was the walk from his car over the pier at Mandwa where Suresh Oberoi stands facing the sea at the piers end. His goons dressed in white stand on either side of the pier and start walking behind Khanna as he moves towards Oberoi. It was magic… atleast for me to see such a beautiful choreographed actors’ movements with the blue sea as the back drop. The same scene follows with Vinod now running back towards his car from the piers end with the goons shooting at him from behind.
His dialogues with Oberoi were another thing that raised his on screen presence. Plus Mukul’s effective use of mid to closeup shots of Khanna through out the movie showed how well Mukul knew to extract the best of Khanna’s heavy towering personality on-screen.
Khanna became a rage, a talk of the town, I personally saw the entire theater going wild when Khanna appeared for another movie’s premiere.
Satyamev Jayate carried some of the same aura the towering presence. To get a glimpse or an understanding of what I mean, I’ll quote Khalid Mohamed who trashed Satyamev Jayate (it deserved it rightly so), but his last line of the review was “On screen Vinod Khanna’s presence is that of an Emperor”
Bull’s eye. That was it. An emperor like onscreen presence.
Unfortunately… his selection of films went from bad to worse… and real real worse. That’s when he lost the old magic… not after his first comeback hit – Insaaf or even his second comeback flop – Satyamev Jayate… it was to be all the trash movies he would act in after his first two.
To get a glimpse of how bad his movie got… try sitting through 15 minutes of his movie called “Surya”… I damn sat through the entire 3 hours and hit the bar after the movie to erase the torture I was put through. Even the bigger banners didn’t work out well for him. Firoz Khan’s take on ‘Nayakan’ remade as ‘Dayavan’ to put it mildly… should never have been made.
Mukul Anand though used him in his next two movies… that’s when he also roped in Rajnikanth… but the movies were nothing to talk about except Mukul’s magic in his onscreen visuals.
Oz: though Insaaf was bigger hit and a better film than SMJ, but none created the atmosphere for Vinod Khanna as he had left in 1981. Perhaps time was bad for hindi films. Vinod Khanna was good in both the films and was the best factor associated with those films. There was a scene in Satya Mev Jayate, where he slaps Meenakshi Sheshadri when she informs him that she is pregnant with his child. Thats such a powerful scene w.r.t Vinod Khanna’s performance. Satyamev jayete has little resemblance with Ardha Satya but then every Inspector in corrupt police scenario looks like that. Vinod Khanna may be remembered for his role in Aruna Raje’s Rihai and small role in Yash Chopra’s Chandni in this period and Gulzar’s Lekin.
bad films were made in that period. He did 2-3 films with Mukul Anand, 2-3 with Yash Chopra, 2-3 with JP Dutta, and 2-3 films with KC Bokadia who was a craze in those days and Jurm with Mahesh Bhatt and if these film makers could not make better films then whom to blame. But except for few chosen films it was clear that old Vinod Khanna had not come back in 1987. Perhaps hunger of an artist to do something was missing. Later he became more busy with his social works and politics. But in Risk he generates hope. he looks charged this time.
I dont know if KM this time also mentioned him as an emperor on screen. He certainly has a great screen presence.
Great write up RK! These are actors who even today hold immense potential and should present exciting opportunities for todays film-makers.
In fact I had written a few treatments which involved older characters, and whether it would be a firey district attorney or an estranged father who wanted to be reacquainted with his son, I’d always end up envisioning Vinod Khanna in those parts. It would be a personal dream come true for me if I were ever given the opportunity to work with such a great actor.
There was one treatment in particular I was very gung-ho about. The main character was this Indian History professor teaching at a Canadian University. A group of his students are intrigued by a book he had written about possible treasures in India hidden from the Mahabharat era. The professor and the students head out on an excursion to Kurukshetra (sp?) and end up on this suspensful adventure (think more along the lines of “Lekin” than say a “National Treasure”).
Vinod Khanna has such immense range, it would be a damn shame if filmmakers don’t take advantage and give this man opportunities.
There was this other treatment… about a normal, working class father living abroad with his family, working as an office clerk or something along those lines, a mundane job to support his family. One day his daughters friend discovers that this man was once a prolific Ghazal singer, who wrote his own beautiful, poetic lyrics. How the girls coax him back to reclaim his glory as a singer made up the rest of the film.
I had always felt Vinod Khanna, with the kind of introspect dialogue delivery style he is capable of, would have been absolute magic in such a role. I had even pitched this idea to a Toronto based producer, who rejected it outright as he felt it was “too dry a subject”. I tried telling him the treatment was anything but “dry”, it was actually quite light and full of entertaining moments, the man was shown to go from this subdued, reserved man (who loved to sit quietly and read or listen to old hindi songs/ghazals in his spare time) to slowly bringing out the charisma he once held and felt he had left it behind with his youth. It was meant to be such a lovely journey for his character. How full of life and energy he felt when he started writing again, how nervous he felt meeting a music producer (for his new album), how he would freak out at the thought of once again going back onto a stage and performing, and yet how once there he was right at home… there were so many real, touching moments in that script yet the producer felt that the subject was too dry…
Imagine a Vinod Khanna in that type of character today… wouldn’t it be magical?
Tony: Vinod Khanna has range unlimited. any role Amitabh Bachchan had played in recent years, we always can imagine same roles done by Vinod Khanna in his style, especially Eklavya and Nishabda.
and its true when Amitabh is better than Abhishek,
Dharmendra is better than Sunny and Bobby, Vinod Khanna is better than Akshay Khanna then why film makers shy to utilize their true potentials. Whats the fear. People are ready to watch good cinema. young actors or old actors it does not matter. Bring new challenges before these old lions and see their performances.
Your first story befits more on Vinod Khanna as he has not acted before in soft roles of a singer etc. Though he had full romance in him. see him in Mein Tulsi tere anagan ki.
But who knows he could have done good in your second treatment also. send him proposal
Thanks RK bhai… just wanting to see Vinod Khanna do something different… and yes, I agree on your points: Amitabh is better than Abhishek, Dharmendra much better than both sons put together, and Vinod Khanna is slightly better than Akshaye (although Akshaye does have a brilliant range himself)…
Also, I agree with you that it would have been amazing to see Vinod Khanna do some of the parts Amitabh has done recently… imagine him in Khakee (though Amitabh was awesome)…
A close friend and I had imagined if Santoshi’s China Gate had a bigger star cast (the cast was fantastic, so I won’t speak of replacements)… imagine Shatrughan Sinha, Dharmendra, Amitabh, Vinod Khanna in a film with such a theme… older men banding together to save a town and redeem their broken souls…
Tony: If a director/writer can envision any story where each character is given enough weightage and these old lions are signed for that film, rest assured we will have cinematic feast.
China Gate type films can be good if focuss on main theme and dont deal with irrelevant romance, communal kind of angles.
It was so pathetic to listen first Amrish Puri’s reasons of hating Naseer and later Naseer’s long lecture on what happened at Maliyana.
and those dramatic dialogues of Mukhesh Tiwari!!!!
But yes film looked good on conceptual basis(before releasing)
But surely man, if not seven samurai we can make seven bamurai. is not it!!!!!
Awesome article RK..and amazing discussion here…
All the three you have mentioned highly acclaimed artists…but, with Govinda making a comeback…it looks as if he is very desperate for that “hit”…trying extra hard….which was not the case with Vinod Khanna and Dharamender…
Ohh and who can forget that Cinthol ad of Vinod Khanna…he was really emperor in that one…what aura he had…During the same time even Dimple was making a comeback ( if i am not mistaken) and she came up with Crown and Glory soap ad….damn hot she looked in those golden hair…coming from behind a door…
Yes Om, Parmeshwar Godrej caught two hottest stars of that period and both had made their come back. Still both the ads remain two of best bathing soap ads.
Did you watch Govinda dancing at IIFA. if not see it.
He may be needing desperately a hit but he was very sincere in his performances in Bhagam Bhag and SEI. thats a good sign. Its always pleasant to watch a good actor to exploit new territories in his acting range which Govinda did in these two films.
Om: late 80s can be said as prime time for good ads. remember Imran Khan’s ad and then that wonderful ad of Relience where Vivian Richards dance at swimming pool singing something halihilali hola hoo. and then Shekhar Kapoor’s ad.and then Dev Anand saab’s ad. where he is shown shooting for his film starring Jacky Shjroff and Meenkashi Sheshadri, perhaps for film Sau Karor and many other ads
and then apart from these commercial ads those national integration ads. mile sur mera tumahara with many great personailities
Havent seen the IIFA. Their is no doubt Govinda has given a very sincere performance in SEI…which was lacking during his movies just before the end of his first innings…those million David Dhawan ones…he looked tired dancing in Ramoji Film City….Hope he comes back with a bang..for very few in the industry have a comic timing which could match what Govinda has…
Yeah i remember the Imran and Richards ad…also the Mayur Suitings one with Sunil Gavaskar…also this weekend we were talking about the first Pepsi ad in India…the ” Are you ready for the magic one” with Juhi and Remo…though it was not an ad..it was a teaser for an ad….was genius…the ad first played as a commercial for ” Giant Robot”..haha…
Arrei Bhaiyya RK all those national integration ads are their on Youtube…a few days back i was posting all the links….somewhere
Om: I think Sunnny Gawaskar did Dinesh Suitings ad. Vimal sarees was having Mehar Jesia and some other tall models with their waiving sarees ka anachals.
mayur i dont reacll at present.
Govinda was totally typed in his last films and when he did films with changed subjects audience made such films flop. He had Shikari and it was good.
Yes Yes…my Bad..it was Dinesh Suitings….not Mayur..Mayur was with stupid
Shah Rukh ” Mayur” Khan…arrrghhh
there was another model in those days called…Malvika Tiwari…She also played in a serial called Kashish with Sudesh berry…where is she?
Haha and who can forget..
Palmolive da jawaab nai…with kapil Paaji
Om:yes Malwika Tiwari played a role in that serial with Sudesh Beri who played role of a director I recall and his mother was old days caberette dancer actress Kalpana Aiyar. Cant recall corectlly but perhaps Malvika had migrated to USA. search and may be you find her somewhere in the market in your vicinity only:) doing shoping for her family.
And an ad was there with our Dharam ji on Bullet motorcycle, ye bullet meri jaan manjilon ka nishan.
Malavika Tiwari….Oooh Aaah. I loved her. She was so beautiful. There was movie of her’s “Bechain” which was the remake of Double Impact. I watched that bad movie with a bad hero just because of her.
I like Sudesh Berry also. Saw him for the first time for the in the second season of a serial called “Subaah”(not sure of the name). It was a serial on drugs. Sudesh Berry was a police officer in it. I knew that he would be a movie star. And then came Vansh. Liked him in most of his movies like Yudhpath, Border, Vansh, etc
Among the old ads I liked the Bagpiper ad of Sunny Deol also. Aamir Khan had “Hero Puch”. Saif had “Rajdoot”. I used to watch that Crowning Glory ad just to see Dimple’s shoulders.
Satyamev Jayate was the remake of the Malayalam film “Avanazhi” through which Mammooty became a Superstar. After Insaaf I think Vinod Khanna had only one hit. That was Chandni. He was very good in it. I liked Maha Sangram and Khoon Ka Karz also very much. But in both the movies I liked the supporting cast. In Maha Sangram I liked Aditya Panscholi and became a big fan of him. In Khoon Ka Karz I liked both Sanjay Dutt and Rajnikanth. Loved the scene where Sanjay Dutt and Rajnikanth beat up Vinod Khanna. But I think he was not taking his career seriously. There were many bad films of his. His comeback in “Deewanapan” had not worked. And his comeback in “Risk” also has not worked.
@RK
A wonderful topic and an even more wonderful discussion going on.
How come Vinod Khanna
saw some parts of coolie no.1 yesterday on star gold.
Govina was heart of the film. scene where kadar khan forces govinda to drink wine- chemistry between kadar kahn and Govind was awesome. Govinda with different voice tone in this movie- sach me bahot kam actors aisa kar sakte hai.
I like vinod khanna in Inkaar director: Raj N. Sippy also.
More details of Insaaf can be found on article by our dear OZ
http://desitrain.blogspot.com/2005/03/who-is-mukul-s-anand-part-1.html
Dhramji is my all time favourite. saw Ghulami sometimes back. he was awesome.
Justin John: Did not know Subah serial had second part also. This was the serial which had got huge curiosity because The Amitabh Bachchan had introduced this serial. Director had brought almost true campus based college atmosphere on TV.
A Deepak Tijori look alike was the lead character, but attention got this actor with curly hairs, forgot his name. When he put off his shirt as his seniors demanded it and burnt it, then this actor had won the serial and audince’s attention. Later he did some episodes of Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj, was there in Koyla also but sadly could not do much.
I dont know why but from first serial of Sudesh Berry I had notion that he wont do much as he was simply trying to copy Amitabh Bachchan. Mukesh Khanna also started his career in Vaqt ki Deewar with look alike of Amitabh but atleast Mahabharat saved him but later Bheeshma Pitamah did not leave him. Though Hema Malini also took Sudesh Berry in Nupur but somehow he remained to use his good physique then the acting.
In films I only recall him in Ghayal and one song where he plays police inspector and some actress is singing in rain, ye ye bindiya ye kajra kare kya ishare. dont know which film it belonged.
Malviaka tiwari was in subhash ghai’s saudagar where she played sister of Rajkumar.
Vinayak: First I have not seen Leela, so I could not mention it whether its a good film or not.
As OZ mentioned in depth, its true Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra and Shatrughan Sinha and even Mithun Chakravorty these all actors spoilt their career by doing bogus violent flms in late 80s and early 90s. Dharamendra is all rounder actor and thats why he did not shy away to do any kind of films as he can play any kind of role but that brought his reputation down. Vinod Khanna was choosy or by luck he had got different films in his first phase but in later phase he just followed trends of Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha and Mithun and thus brought down his image of a distinctive actor. and when hindi film, industry again started coming back in to shape then these actors were in semi retirement, busy in politics or business.
Govinda’s case is not different either. He also did whatever came his way if director made him solo hero.
Todays era is of giving quality work and not quantity. They can earn good money from 2 super hit films rather than to do 8 filsm out of which 7 goes flop and then their market is gone.
Govinda will surely get more work, as now he wont be having any inhibtion to share screen with other actors. Govinda is not a weak actor so that he shd fear. He can give competition to any actor of India.
Shailesh: have you seen Krodhi of Subhash Ghai? Dharmji’s sole film with him. Chal chameli baag mein meva khilaunga!!!!
This remains an untalked film.
OZ had mentioned here that Inkaar was actually remake of some Hollywood film. But still film was good. Amjad Khan’s heavyweight laughing, Sadhu Mehar’s pity condition, Helen’s Mangta hai to aa ja rasia, song, Vinod Khanna’s befitting acting and pace of the film always made this film worth watching. and then friction in the story . How Dr Sriram Lagu changes his heart to give money for ransome when he gets to know that its not his grand son but Sadhu Mehar’s son.
RK: Also There was film “Gazab” – Dharmendra with long teeth.
also good performance. i must see krodhi.
i cannot figure out in which film does Dharmendra say something like, my hands are like steel; after stopping a bullet with his hand…
:-?
RK, I think that curly haired guy in Subaah is Salim. He played the police officer in Zulm Ki Hukumat and Drohi. He was the villain in Maharaja, Thiruda Thiruda, etc. I remember there were 2 lead charectors in Subaah. The other was a fair guy. The second season was about him in rehab.
And I think Vinod Khanna was the serial kisser after Insaaf. Saw him smooching a lot of heroines in movies like Dayavaan, Mahaadev, etc.
Many people have forgotten Vinod Khanna. Some years ago when I went to watch Kranti, I was excited because Vinod Khanna was there. I told my friend about it. He asked me, “Who is Vinod Khanna?” Even when Risk was going to release many of my friends asked who Vinod Khanna was. I had to answer in a way that they could understand. I said, “He is Akshaye Khanna’s father.”
And I hope that Apne would be a good film. It looks more like another version of Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham. I feel that the audience need a good action film from the 3 Deols. Even waiting for “Jhonny Gaddar”. I think it is shelved.
HG:
Can we prepare a petition to sue Dharmendra,Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithun Chakravorty, (Jacky Shroff and Govinda can be included) for doing mindless low graded films. These nice actors should be fined with a penalty of Rs 1 Cror each. With that 5 cror we can make a foundadtion which will make meaningful films with these actors. Atleast their sins will be reduced if not washed properly. How such wonderful actors dared to go for those degraded films. They did violence with audience. They deserve punishments:)
Justin: Right his name was Salim Ghouse. He was very good in TV serials but lost in films.
Vinod Khanna had a role of lawyer in Raveena Tandon’s film. I cant recall the name. yes he was in Kranti also. Thats why I mention that atleast Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna shd be imposed with a penalty. Its sad to see them in bogus films.
They had image of classy actors and they ended with lowest grade films.
But its strange that some dont know who Vinod Khanna is.
But for god sake, pray to lord that Deols leave fascination for action packed films. we have seen 2.5Kgs fist of all the three deols. Its too much. Atleast Lord spare Dharam ji from this genere of films. Bring back Dharam ji of Satyakam, Anupama, Chupke Chupke, Bandini, Pathar ke phul, kajal, dillagi and IF he enters in to territory of action then he should be stopped at Kartayva, sholay, ghulami. Who had made Dadagiri with him, that filmmaker is responsible for degrading Dharam ji.:(
some third class movies of dharmendra-
Veerudada,Khule Aam,Kohram, Meri jung ka elaan, putlibai, mastkalandar, naakabandi,Dushman Devtaa… and the anil sharma + dharmendra duo made films – Hukumat , elaan-e jung, Farishtay and Tehelka which had same story lines and villain- Sadashiv amrapurkar except tehelka- all of them were bhangaar.
Punish ‘em – They certainly deserve it! I thought ‘Apne’ was a bit similar to Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. Dharmendra wants Boby to win a boxing match for him but he gets injured, so Sunny takes up his place. And Sunny not being Dharmendra’s favorite….
:-?
HG: Pavan was right, if what you are saying is right then “Apne” is remake of “Zindadil” where Pran saab played the role which Dharmendra will play and two sons roles was played by Rishi Kapoor, his first double role.
Why on earth Anil Sharma opted this film and without even mentioning the fact that its based on old film?
He was projecting it as if he had been waiting since ages for right story and now he has got.
This habit is shocking. when you make a remake declare it. why to hide. people will not know once they see the film? and then you earn more abuses!!!
It was Deepak Shivadasani who directed Dadagiri. It was a remake of a Pakistani film. Many movies in the late 80’s were remakes of Pakistani films. It was because of that movie that Dharmendra’s superstardom had come back. I remeber reading a magazine when i was a kid where it was written “Dadagiri has brought back the Housefull board for Dharmendra’s movies”.
Shailesh : perhaps it was Veeru Dada which changed directions of Dharamendra. Its poster had tag lines: contact Veru dada
Pitayee karne ka X Rs
haath torhne ka Y Rs
pair torhne ka Z Rs
gardan torhne ka XX Rs
what a joke, and Dharam ji wore first time those sleevless jackets which he repeated in several films later. afterwards he left sophisticated acting and joined this wresteling type acting for next 13 years and result?
he sat at home for 5-6 years and once came back in Mallika Sherawat’s pathetic comedy film.
Thank god he has regained his form through Metro.
Hope he does sensible roles in this inning
JJ: Perhaps Dadagiri was a hit but Hukumat was his most hit films in 5 years between 1985-1990.and he ewas very happy to play that role and had even compared it with Haqiqat as he was playing a patriotic role here. It was reported in a film magazine, perhaps for Dadagiri or some other film he was paid hefty amount as director was his fan and Dharam ji did not wish to do the film and he asked big amount and director said yes to that amnt and Dharamendra was taken aback that he can get such high price in the era when VCR was making a big dent in the business of films.
@Shailesh
I like “Mast Kalandar” alot. It was one of my favorites Dharmendra. It is not an action film. It was a sweet comedy film. The film will be remembered as one of the early film to show homosexuality. Anupam Kher got the Filmfare award for best actor in a comic role for that movie. There was a triangle love story in the movie. Anupam loves Prem Chopra. Shakti Kapoor loves Anupam Kher. And Prem Chopra is not a gay.
JJ: is it same film which had song, Mein hun garam dharam and kahe bheege ree kamala kharee kharee meri chhatri ke neeche aja?
No, those songs are from Tehelka.
he also was in that romantic-comedy Salman-Kajol film…
is Rajesh Khan only the actor that retired with a bit of grace and never came back to do shite films?
Khanna*
i meant, Rajesh Khanna….
Rajesh Khanna did a shit movie recently. Jaana-lets fall in love. Did not watch the movie. Saw a song where he was dancing and singing his old movie songs. He was humiliating himself.
before mastkalandar Shakti kapoor played gay villain role as Jagraj in veeru dada and he had punchline
“mere kanne chakku hai” ( i have knife).
Also it had song” is duniya me ji nahi sakta aadmi sidha saada, is liye me ban gaya veeru se veeru dada..”
Mastkalandar was directed by Rahul rawail and had dimple kapadiya with dharmendra. I messed up with film Sherdil with rishi kapoor
Rajesh Khanna made come back two three times like
Aa ab laut chale(1999)
Kyaa dil ne kahaa(2002) and latest Jaana(2006) but failed.
Nobody created hype as Amitabh bachchan created for come back in Mrityudata(1997) and after initial failure he is on the strike till now.
:o
Outrageous! Why cannot they leave with a bit of dignity? And if they want to do films then at least do half-decent films…..
Its very difficult for an actor to live away from camera and lime light and that can be the reason that when they dont get a offer after a long time they just do it with the hope that it might work. Rajesh Khanna’s case may be similar. was “Jaan” same film where he was working with Zeenat Aman?
There should be a story for such actors.
and its true all are not Dilip Kumar that will not work in a film unless it appeals them, no matter they get a offer in 5 years of 15 years.
R.k it’s nostalgic….at least dharam ji….for me i like dharmendra in “anpadh”…n in chupke chupke..his shudh hindi style…angreji me put and but…….he was superb dere..i think he can do such roles now also…
VK……..i can’t say but if directed well he can be another Harrison Ford…
Govindaa ji..need some political role
Dipankar: yes Dharamji is outstanding in Chupke Chupke, this is his and Om Prakash’s film. Film has many moments where Dharamji leaves us in astonishment with his performance. He is in perfectly flourised state there.
VK. is unique in hindi film industry. Its hard to find such a content man in that industry where people are seiged with jealousy kind of feelings.
He has never felt short of talent.
A good story and he will shine like dhruv tara.
Govinda: Political role? did not understand!!!:-w
@RK
As to why Anil Sharma chose to rehash Zindadil(if it is really true) maybe for the USP of bringing the entire Deol clan together for first time or he does not know himself..In one of my previous posts Games Bollywood plays i had recounted Anil Sharma’s soundbytes to one of the electronic channels in which he said that he was sure of not making an action movie..But he was certain that his movie would have drama, family values, song, romance, thrill..therefore he chose sports as a backdrop for Apne!..Now what can you make out of it..you decide.
P.S: Buzz is that Apne has all the ingredients mixed and matched from Rocky series,Million Dollar Baby and Cindrella Man..
Dharmendra should not do an action film..I wonder why our heroes cannot age gracefully like Clint Eastwood & Sly..They can carry the movie on their shoulders at their age also and one can watch their action movies with suspension of disbelief.
Dipankar, watch Ocean 13 made me think for a moment VK can easily essay the character of Danny Ocean with all its elan and glamour.
So far Mithun is concerned, i think he is one of the rare examples of guy who shot at his own foot..There was a time between 1996-99 when Mithun starred in scores of movies made in a budget of one and half crores, where his own remuneration was fifty five lakhs approx. and the whole of movie was made in remaining ninety five lakhs or so..All these movies were duds and he got a rare distintion of guy with maximum flops and a mention in Guinness Books(i think)..But the surprising part was that producer lined up to sign him for such movies as the returns were assured alongwith his dates..Another example of money winning over material.
krysh. lests see and keep hope that it turn out to be a good film. If I am correct Anil Sharma had started with a social film Shardhanjali so he has training in making social film.
Ohh yeah Salim Ghouse…i loved him…such a powerful voice…saw him recently in Missed Call…
I did notice him in Subah.. was like a sequel to another serial on drugs called Chunauti…i think Neena Gupta used to act in Chunauti..
Om: Chunauti was a very good serial on students. never came across better serial than that one on students. It was introductory serial for RafeeqJakaria, Suchitra Krishnamurthy and Mohan Bhandari.
I still recall on very first day of class teacher Mohan Bhandari says to his students I am Ananth Bandhu, boys wont call me simply Mr Ananth and Girls wont address me simply as Mr Bandhu.
but one mystery remained. There was a tall and handsome boy who was room mate of Rafeeq jakaria in the serial whose used to wear clothes of rafeeq, he wished to contest election in college but later leaves college. his role was cut in between. who was that boy. He looked very similar to Bobby deol in face. though he was not.
when i think abt Govinda..i always wish he can portray a political leader…imagine we have a film we hav a story of a leader who want to make some difference..in a mission to change the situation…i could think of a film n for the protoaganist it’s non other than govinda..
dipankar:
I dont know abt Govinda playing a politician but you are pushing me to cover a book. Since 2 months I have been suppressing my wish to mention the book, which can be adapted in to a film which may create more mass based liking than RDB.
May be next week.
hey rk plzz nam d book
