  1. The list of feature films looks interesting.Quite a good mix of movies over there.Bengali cinema seems to have got a lot of entries. In case of Malayalam I’m a bit surprised at the omission of Pazhassi Raja.Telugu cinema continues to disappoint and has drawn a blank.

  2. Yes, I am dissapointed too with Telugu films. However, I am happy to see Gabhricha Paus and Pasanga.

Should ‘Gulabi Talkies’ be in the list?

Panorama selection is a joke… Achamundu/Kaminey has no reason to be in any list to represent Indian cinema…

and Sethu, I am not worried if a popular film like Pazhassi Raja is omitted, but there are beautiful little malayalam films like Madhyavenal and Sufi Paranja Katha ( this one by Priyanandan who made the amazing Pulijanmam).

It is sad that quota system which is woe to our educationa, pops up here too…. really, Achamundu is an amateur work..for gods sake and not representing anything Indian.. a Sham….

    • Ram- The panorama selection has always had a spot for a few mainstream films as well and thats the reason why Kaminey or Billa ( last year ) made it.I know its probably not fair, but when you have a provision what do we say?Yes I agree Madhyavenal and Sufi Paranja Katha have been overlooked. And as for Achamundu- agreed its an average movie and surprised that it did make its way.

Another unfortunate omission is Kerala Cafe, one of the best Malayalam movies of recent times.

Sethu, theres no quota of any kind in Indian panorama. Correct it if you have any other impression.

This time, its realy unfair to malayalam films coz movies like Rithu, Thirakkatha, Kerala cafe, madhyavenal, Thalappavu, Sufi paranja Katha etc are 1000 time sbetter than Kaminey, Pasanga etc. Pasanga, Kaminey etc could be a part of the “aminstream” segment, and not in Indian Panorama segment of IFFI.

        • Rags- oh! thanks for the elucidation, but I stand by what I’ve mentioned. There is a representation of mainstream films thats now allowed in Indian Panorama. For your benefit given below is a link for you to check and read-

          http://www.livemint.com/2009/10/20134847/Indian-Panorama-section-to-inc.html

And regarding Kerala Cafe – well the rules state the movies should have been certified by Censor Board between 1st Sep 2008 and 31st Aug 2009.Kerala Cafe released on 30th Oct and I’m sure it would not have been censored on/before 31st Aug 2009.

While even I agree that Madhyavenal,Sufi Paranja Katha etc were unlucky to have missed out-are you sure if the producers of these films submitted them for evaluation of the same?Films need to be sent in as entries and among the entries the shortlisting happens. So lets be sure if these films have been sent and then lament about them.

  5. The scale on which Magadheera was made is simply unreachable for Hindi or any other regional cinema for atleast a few years. You can trash the director for the poor story and stock characterizations, but the whole movie was conceived on a grand scale and executed superbly and the technical standards were on par with Hollywood. It should have been selected to display the technical advances that Indian movies have made. Kaminey….
