A comment on Dada Mithun

Following is actually a comment on one of my post on great Dada, Mr. Mithun Chakraboty. It was written by a visitor named Dr. Usman Khawaja. The reason for me putting it up as a post is for all to read as I found it to be written by a very matured and knowledgeable person who possesses flair for writing in a smooth manner.

Neither have I changed a single word of this nor would I like to take credit for it. I am sure it would have been lost if left as a comment on 7th Dec 2006 post.

________________________________________________________________________________

India is a very mysterious land and it is also just as varied. You have more than 100 languages and as many racial equivalents. In a land so rich it is absolutely impossible to find any chance of agreement on any single issue.

The query here is who would be crowned the best star actor in this culturally rich diversity. The names that spring to your mind are many. There is Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Kamal Hassan, Dilip Kumar and finally Mithun Chakraborty, not to exclude Uttam Kumar the predecessor king of Bengali cinema.

Now no one can deny they need to see how the racial question divides India. The northern Indians have never accepted either Bengali or Southern male stars, whatever the persona or talent. While Hema Malini,`Vyjanti Mala and Sharmila Tagore have ruled the box office, no one other than Mithun from regional cinema has ever made into the top three coveted male star positions, as far as box office is concerned never mind the artistic merits of Pyar Jukhta Nahin and Disco Dancer, they were super hits.

Mithun Chakraborty defies this so called bigotry as he was born of regional cinema and then despite his Bengali accent and looks, became one of the top most star in mainstream Bollywood without having to resort to the charity or support of Yash Chopra or Ramesh Sippy.

Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan made their super hits and all the quality movies with Sippy’s or Chopra’s. In this way Mithun is a paradox and enigma, as he was labelled a poor man’s Amitabh, despite Jaya Bachchan saying in 70s that he was more talented than Amitabh Bachchan and that is on record.

Now looking at the resume no other actor has a movie like Mrigaya-The Royal Hunt, and no one ever will have the courage either in Hollywood or Bollywood to attempt that, in fact it seems to have inspired Apocalypto, it’s a tribute to Mrinal Sen, Mithun Chakraborty and Mamta Shanker, which is unique in the world of cinema, even if you disregard the three national awards he won on the basis of his talent, rather than by influencing the jury’s like Hum Tum and Black, which has become rife today, in fact national awards have become a joke in last few years, but he and Sanjeev Kumar won them when they were genuine.

Hum Tum was a second rate version of Harry Met Sally done by a second rate Sharukh Khan copycat Saif Ali Khan, who landed a national award just as Amitabh Bachchan did in Black, a copy of Miracle Worker the great movie about Helen keller from the 60s, if anyone deserves an award in black it’s the child artist who some how managed a natural performance despite the pretentiousness which engulfed black. How this award was attained only god can answer that question or the jury.

Mithun Chakraborty has proven himself in multi-starrers like Ghulami opposite Dharmendra and Naseer Uddin Shah and in Hum Paanch too, where he was the best again. But also he has the versatility to play a romantic hero as in Prem Pratigya one of the best romantic movie on Indian screen opposite Madhuri Dixit, and that is what deserves to be called a love story, not the designer monstrosities that the Chopra’s make in the name of love.

I have yet to see Amitabh Bachchan play a romantic lead himself convincingly. In Kabhi Kabhie and Silsila all he did was frowning and brooding over lost love, in Bemisaal and Jurmana he was angry , name one love story like Aradhana or Amar Prem or Safar where any emotion of love has been ever been expressed by him convincingly in any movie.
He was the angry young man of the 70s and had comic timing and his physique suited action roles, which were very popular in the 70s and 80s, but name any great love movies and you, come up with zilch; Kabhi Kabhie belongs to Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Sahir and Khayyam.

There is no doubt whatever anybody says about Mithun Chakraborty’s dancing talent. He was the best and still is the best dancer Hindi screen has produced. Whether it is ethnic or disco dancing he has always been superb. Just watch him in Zeehale Muskin the song from Ghulaami or song from Disco Dancer. They are all done by him stylishly and flawlessly. Kamal Hassan can dance but Rajesh didn’t even try neither did Dilip sahib, as for Amitabh Bachchan he copied the steps from Albela and Mootilal in every movie, at least he has the grace to admit it, but look at it today, Hrithik is the best now and he can do about five steps which he repeats in every movie hilariously.

Mithun chakraborty was never cast by big movie houses he had to content himself with the so called B- grade cinema, yet he made gems like Ghulaami, Prem Pratigya, Gudia and Jallad.

His bilinguality is another asset, while no one can deny the richness of Bengali cinema and its diversity, no Hindi actor has contributed to that, but Mithun has to Hindi cinema, that’s a compliment to him and an asset for Hindi cinema.

The only other actor from India to rival him is possibly Kamal Hassan with Sadma and Ek Duje Ke Liye but his movies have never got the popular Bollywood appeal and he only appeared in a handful, unlike Mithun Chakraborty who is still working in Hindi mainstream like Elaan and Chingaari, despite Mani Ratnam and Amitabh Bachchan trying to discredit him in Guru he still managed too give the best performance in the fist half. The second half is comprehensible to only people who have no clue as to how a screenplay should be written as the journalist of Madhavan and Mithun chakraborty totally disappear in the second half which was a paradox in itself, as the script seemed to indicate the movie was a battle between the immoral industrialist Guru and the honest journalists Madhavan and Mithun Chakraborty.

To glorify Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan had to dub this incompetent actor very shabbily, in an awfully unrealistic speech from a stroke ridden man, Amitabh Bachchan didn’t even give any consideration to the fact that a man suffering from a stroke would be dysphasic or stutter or stammer, he went on his Baghban like sermonising while Mr Ratnam, the director has been left to be a laughing stock at the expense of the Bachchan’s, I wonder what Mr Ratnam’s got to say for himself as I believe Mithun Chakraborty has raised some serious accusations about his role being ripped off, which is obvious as he and Madhavan are absent from the court scenes all together, what an idiosyncrasy and how convenient for the Bachchan’s.

I feel more sorry for people like them rather than Mithun who has a rich resume with movies like Gudia which were in competition in Cannes (not a single other stars has that merit,) and Titli which again won numerous international awards world over. While Gudia and Titli might not set the Indian box office on fire, their artistic merit like Mrigya-The Royal Hunt is unquestionable.

Finally can I inform you that in 1987 a Russian magazine voted Mithun Chakraborty as one of the sexiest men on the planet, I think the only other actor is Dharmendra who was voted so by Italians in the 70s. So much for the North Indian bigotry as to Mithun as a second rate to Amitabh Bachchan, in fact I would think Mr Bachchan should take a bow to Mr Chakraborty and learn a few things from Mrigaya, Gudia and Titli rather then keep making second rate remakes of Hollywood classics like Miracle Worker and godfather as Sarkar and Black, after all it is originality which is immortal rather then even a master fake.

I hope this is not taken as a racial or linguistic comparison. I am talking of the talent of an individual rather than creed or religion, language or age.

No the article is not bigoted IMO.
And very intresting to note the Manirathnam- Mithun angle.

Shit maaaan … need to catch hold of subtitled bengali films … or else LEARN Bengali !!!

Muzzy: had read that comment earlier also. Author seems to be extremely obsessed with Mithun Chakravorty. Mithun has been a good actor but author has gone beyond rational approach in recognising Mithun as better actor than Kamal, Amitabh, etc. This is a lame excuse that north Indian audience dont accept regional actors. It has more to do with the staying capacity of regional actors in bombay film industry. Same audiences have loved, Waheeda Rehman, Vaijayanti Mala, Hema Malini, Rekha, Sri Devi, Suchitra Sen etc etc over the years and these actresses actually ruled the box office for years. Even Madhuri Dixit can’t be said purely Hindi speaking actress if author wishes to point out that hindi speaking audiences dont accept non hindi speaking actors. Kamal Hasan did not stay in bombay film industry like Sri Devi and Rekha stayed. He did what he thought best suited him at that time and he is loved all over the country for his skills in acting and direction. People loved Uttam Kumar in Amanush and Dooriyan, which could be the only hindi films where he had played the lead roles. Author of the comment has to see Naya Daur, Insaniyat, Gopi, Sagina and Ganga Jamuna to know the dancing skills of Dilip saab. Its very easy to reject one actor when one is trying to estbalish his chosen actor as best actor in the world. Those who dont know about dance, only they can say that Hritik is not a good dancer. Actors dont dance themselves they just copy the steps what choreographers search for them. For years Mithun did it, Amitabh did it and now Hritik is doing it. Certainly they have to have some capability in them to dance, thats why, Jeetendra, Amitabh, Mithun, Govinda, and Hritik score over others in this field in their respective eras. Even if Vaijayanai Mala, Waheeda Rehman, Hema Malini, Sri Devi and Madhuri have been trained dancers but they too did what choreographers told them to do for a film. Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna etc could not break their mould of “not dancing mode”. Sanjay Datt and Sunny Deol also fall in this category or actors who dont know dance.
Not speaking good hindi is certainly a lacking for actors who work in Hindi films. Mithun’s fixed kind of dialogue delivery has been a limitation for him. Hardly we find him saying his dialogues in low pitch, yes once in a while when he plays Ram Krishna Paramhans otherwise he never changes his dialogue delivery no matter what type of role he is playing. He was different and people liked him and thats why he could do more than 200 films. He was there in saleable stars list of top 5 actors just for 3-4 years between 1985-89 and this is not the era when hindi cinema was giving good hindi films. Out of 200 films he did, we can count good films on fingers because they wont enter into double digits. An actor is known by the quality films he did. He earned through these crappy films and perhaps thats why could do some off beat films. He had a better business sense and we have to take it that way only.
He did Mrigaya, rather we can say Mrinal Sen signed him for Mrigaya and as a newcomer Mithun did it. He got no film after Mrigaya and even Mrinbal Sen did not repeat him. Satyajit Ray the biggest name in Bangali Cinema never used Mithun Chakravorty in any of his film. Mithun came to Bombay after Mrigaya and did a 2 minut role in Do Anajane of Amitabh and Rekha. Its also on record that he had become so hopeless that he wished to become secretary of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan consoled him and suggested him to be strong in his struggle. She might have said something like that, that he is better than AB, during such consolations. Or yes he might have been better in his first film Mrigaya than AB’s initial films like Bombay to Goa, Pyar kee kahani etc.
He was good in Ham Paanch but so were other actors and he cant be said as best among 5 others.
Mithun was good in Ghulami but not best and JP Datta did not repeat him. This is also not true that Rajesh Khanna did his films with Yash Chopra and Ramesh Sippy. Rajesh Khanna’s famous films belong to Shakti Samanta, Hrikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen etc again all bangali directors.
Amitabh did films with Prakash Mehra, Hrikesh Mukherjee, Manmohan desai, Yash Chopra, Ramesh Sippy and many others and only one film maker can not be credited to raise his stardom. Most of his super hit films of that era were having other contemporary stars also like Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, and if he scored over them then it should be based on his better skills in acting.
Mithun also did Ganga Jamuna Sarswati, directed by Manmohan Desai and it can be said as worst film of ManMohan Desai. It was perhaps his last film also as a director.
It is never with audience only but with directors also. Do they wish to show some stories through certain actors or not, if not then they dont consider that certain actor fits in their kind of films.
It can be luck also. After 1980 Mithun was never a flop actor and his films did ok business but perhaps his strugling days had made him insecure and he gave worst kind of hindi films in 90s. Which always had Same actors, almost same plot and almost same fatty item girls dancing on erotic songs. He made his choices and he will be judged by his choices and not by the guess what he could do? It can be luck factor also. But thats it.
Sorry to say but Usman Khwaja kind of extremist fans often bring damage to their idol stars because they try to estbalish their idols on that place which is not reserved for them and thus bring them under sharp edged scanning.
Just on the basis of 5-6 off beat films, one can not be termed as greatest actor because then there are more than 150 films to his credit which hardly anyone will wish to see again. Potential has to be used properly and Mithun did not or could not use his potential in right direction atleast in hindi films. He had good physique, attractive personality and different dancing skill and that helped him to big extent. He could be different but he was never in the category of best.

mr RK how dare u say abusive words ,insult mr mithunda dada the bengal tiger who roars on the silver screen ,legend ,icon star, superstar yesteryear of 80s time ,great dancer actor etc ok, big b dharamendra srk or aamir, anil, sunny sanju saif, vinod, shashi, shatrughen, ajay etc people cant dance ok dnt even compare them wth mithun or any other quality dancer actors ok in future atleast its simply ridiculous on ur part his fans will kick ur ass man mind it quick gun murugun haaaaahhaa. i agree that mithun was a flop actor basically from after 90s till date he managed his b grade c grade
a grade films in between by at times getting a hit thats true in between he managed these hit or above average films too such as dalaal, aadmi, janta ki adalat, lootere, yugandar, lucky, luck, got critics award and acclaim for his acting in films such as jallad, chingaari, zahreela as villan, phool aur angaar, brashtachar, agneepath, and latest films such as guru, offbeat films as chal chalien, zor laga ke haiyya etc till date, he also got international awards in film festivals outside india for these films ok and he was considered as the no 1 actor in russia after films dance dance and disco dancer by name jimmy .voted sexiest male of the decade in russia and role model of the year too.Waheeda rehman and rajesh khanna were not dancers mind it, sreedevi was never a perfection dancer apart classically trained. mithun might be shouting his dialogues in films mostly thats true cant help directors say so, since quality directors didnt took him in films he cant help unlike big b or others who got gud directors partiality on his side he has got the guiness record for most no of films done ever by any indian actor thats over 500 to 1000 plus cinema ok no one got near to that mark till now, whats the crap about jaya bachan consoling him is just media created hype ok jaya bachan also said once in a interview when big b was sitting beside her and abhishake too that her favourite actor in bollywood was mithun not amitabh and he is undoubtedly the quality actor only thing he didnt get quality roles and directors unlike amitabh got, and her favourite actor down south is superstar Mohanlal ok she prefers him over amitabh etc she is keen to do a film opposite him etc

Phoenixnu: Sir, I also wrote: regional actors working in Hindi films were always dependent on their staying capability in bombay film Industry. People immensely liked Uttam Kumar and Suchitra sen but they themselve prefered Culcutta over Bombay. Its about their comfort also. Amanush was a successful film at box office and Anand Ashram and Dooriyan were moderate success but none of them was failed on BO. ManMohan Desai signed him for Desh Premi also but he could not complete the film and died in between. Perhaps Uttam Kumar entered in Hindi films at a later stage of his career/life.

Suchitra Sen: We really have to consider this point whether she was really ready to stay mainly in Hindi films? She was liked, awarded in her very first hindi film Devdas. It cant be said that she did not get roles. She was liked further in Mamta and Bombai ka Babu and much later in Aandhi also.

Perhaps these two good actors did not feel comfortable in doing many conventional roles in Hindi films as majority of Hindi films have always been based on BO success.

Those who have stayed here, have been given due places. This is also true that female actors have shown more staying power than male actors. We dont find Actresses imported from South, going back while their male colleague returned.

Moreover, its always for Directors and Producers to look for such opportunities. Rajinikant’s first Hindi film Andha Kanoon was a mega event and film had generated a huge curiosity. Certainly audience cant make every film successful. and it happens with cross over films also. People welcomed his Chalbaz but did not like films like Dosti Dushmani. Certainly he could not bring any mega hit in Hindi where he acted as a solo hero and that counts a lot. because he has very big status in South and will perhaps not like doing films like Hum where he had to share screen with AB and Govinda. same is true with every big regional actor. When Hindi film actors go to regional films, this is valid for them also.

Some great points raised in your first post RK.

“fans often bring damage to their idol stars because they try to estbalish their idols on that place which is not reserved for them and thus bring them under sharp edged scanning”

Its so true. Mithun is a good actor. Ok, I’ll even say he’s a very good actor. But to propel him above the likes of Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh or Dharmendra is going completey over the top. And to say these men are better, more versatile actors takes nothing away from Mithun.

I like Mithun. Always have. And Ghulami is one of my favorite films. Despite putting in an excellent, memorable performance, you exactly can’t say Mithun outperformed Dharmendra or Naseerudin Shah in the film.

Mithun was never the best performer of his time. In the 80’s he was up there, but not to the same level as Anil Kapoor or Jackie Shroff. Picture Mithun replacing either in films like “Parinda”, “Ram Lakhan”, “Tehzaab”, “Falak”, “Mr. India”, “Kaash” or “Saheb” and you’ll see my point.

In fact, if you go farther back (perhaps an unfair comparison as Mithun wasn’t an actor of that era, but) can you really see Mithun replacing either Dharmendra or Amitabh in “Chupke Chupke” or “Sholay”?? Or Rajesh Khanna in “Anand” or “Amar Prem”?? I sure can’t. So how can you say he’s better??

Mithun’s good, very good, and has earned his place in the industry, but lets not get carried away here.

The author seems to go slightly overboard here. Agreed, Mithun is sometimes very, very good, but one does have to admit that he lacks consistency in his performances. Also, his dialogue delivery lets him down quite bit. But yeah, he does have some great performances (leaning more toward art-house cinema). To say that he was better than the Amitabh of the 80s (Anand, Milee, Chupke Chupke, Deewar, Shakti, Sholay) would be carrying things a bit too far.

As for Mithun’s dances, well to be honest nobody from the previous generation is even in the same realm of Prabhudeva, Hrithik etc as far as sheer dancing abilities are concerned. Kamal did have the advantage of being a trained classical dancer, but even he wasn’t as good a dancer as these two are. Probably the names of Chiranjeevi, Javed Jaffrey, Govinda, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, Karishma etc could be invoked, but not AB, Mithun, Rajesh Khanna, Dharam, SRK etc!

    Its definitely going overboard!

If Usman saheb wants a logical debate, there is no end to it. With due respect to Mithun, who no doubt is a great actor with absolutely no sense of justice to his talent (the way Usman saheb is highlighting it), but with an amazing commercial sense (all his B, C D E grade movies are commercially viable movies), lets not try and get into a Mithun Vs. Amitabh debate. Amitabh is a multi millionaire (through propaganda, box office charisma, acting skills, business acumen, wotever). Even today, his sickness, his dog’s sickness and his dog’s dog’s sickness are all news item. If you want to downplay the phenomenon, its your wish! But insofar as my memory serves me, I haven’t come across any baseless phenomenon taking such epic proportions.

All the actors highlighted – Sanjeev Kumar, Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Kamal, Rajni are great in their own rights. It has nothing to do with a unidimensional analysis. Nobody would kill for Mithun or Amitabh. For Rajni, at least a 1000 people in a small locality may kill you.

when Mithun protested, not a lot of people cared. When Amitabh had an accident, a whole nation mourned.
Whether Usmaan saheb likes it or not, Black did win a lot of accolades. Whether he deserves to be praised or not, Tendulkar still has more than 40 centuries to his name. You have as many fans on both the sides.

And most importantly, praising one great actor defnitely does not entail berating another. You are being defensive when you try to berate a whole generation of actors to prove that Mithun is good. Suraj (maybe, Truck Driver Suraj!) ko diya dikhaane ki jaroorat nahi hoti! :)

All this in a light vein. I dont intend to offend anyone!

govinda is the better dancer than any of those mithuns and javeds.his dance moves are more sweeter than all.dance is just not only about acrobats and stunts,it’z about ur whole natural flair and expressional grace.that’z where govinda scores over many others(including mithun).he admits that he has personally chosen nt to be electric fast mover instead he changed himself to b more slow and rhythmatic in his dance

MITHUN IS GREAT AS AN ACTOR,AS A MAN,AS A SOCIAL WORKER———–OUR COUNTRY INDIA IS GIVING “PADMASHREE” AWARDS TO SHAHRUKH KHAN,AKSHAY KUMAR——BUT NOT TO MITHUN WHO HAS WON THREE NATIONAL AWARDS,TWO FILM FARE AWARDS,AND STILL HIS FILM (GURU) IS NOMINATED.I THINK IT IS OUR SHAME THAT WE CAN GIVE “PADMASHREE” TO THOSE ACTORS BUT NOT MITHUN.
I AM A FAN OF MITHUN—-AND I THANK MITHUN FOR ACTING STILL NOW.

As a Westerner, I have to laugh at the Indian mentality of tearing down one great artiste to build up another. I see it all the time and wonder why it is such.

You can have multiple talented people in an industry. There is no need to anoint one as King or better than the other.

    @Lee.
It is not indian mentality. I see that article as a fan-mentality. And that comment was posted, where Another fan of mithun was praising abt him. So other fans added more in that.
I have seen many other western’s fan sites too, Where many fans do the same thing for their fav actor/director

i don’t think, that it is a wise move to post a visitor’s comment, in the form of an article, and let other people criticise him separately.
Comments and article are two different things.

He must have wrote that in reply to something else and/or for different bollywood-site.
People should have criticised him in that comment section that time.
When ppl write an article, they research well, while writing a comment ppl just give their view, doubts and not-a-well-researched opinion.

And then too, the place where they want to post that article, they research for that level only. And anyone should write any article very carefully, when writing for passionforcinema, because people here are different, they are not just crazy fans. They can criticise their own favourite actor/director too.
