A Day in a S/W Engineer’s Life…..

Below is an extract a typical day in my Office :

I am sitting in my cubicle in front of my computer ……..this problem needs to be fixed…..my client wanted me to complete the coding 10 days back … ..Here i am looking through the monitor trying hard to put my left brain and right brain together to concentrate on my work ..the black screen of unix reminds me of Black.. ..i loved every bit of it until i discovered its a straight lift from miracle worker and now i hate myself for appreciating Mr.Bhansali……Thinking of Black reminds me of TZP ..wow..i cried ..i smiled ..i loved…..This is what indian cinema should be ….Stop Anand..focus ….PM wants this by EOD……but how come Welcome is bigger hit then TZP… …common Anand …just work …but how can Taran adarsh give same ratings for both welcome and TZP……Its beyond my capacity to understand this ….What is Nana Patekar doing in this shit …why is Firoz khan acting-nonacting-overacting-underacting in this film ….now i know where did Fardeen khan get his acting genes …..ditto for Zayed khan…wait both are cousins not brothers ….whatever ….Forget it Anand it’s none of your business ……work …please work ……Why is my team-mate staring at me ….oh is it because i made him realise that there exists a movie called Manorama six feet under …..Why are these movies not noticed ……..just ignore him and get back to work like how people ignored MSFU….There is a new mail ..let me check that first …f#$& you ..this is the 4th time i am getting the same mail…

movie to watch out in 2008 …..it starts with Sarkar Raj …..directed by RGV ….why is he doing this to me ….i bunked college for his company ….I cried for Satya when KKHH got all the awards……i even enjoyed daud ….but pls RGV pls ..for god’s sake ……give me my ramu back ………oh i the PM is coming here .. ..fast ..fast change the window ..alt tab…damn it …. alt tab……Why is he opening his mouth …..oh he is speaking …….what is he speaking …..it’s like hearing a review from Khalid …you understand each and every word but still you dont understand what to make of it …..Why is he now sounding like Rakhi Sawant …oh he wants to make his presence felt …..why has he stopped speaking .. …do i need to speak something ….hmm ..ok ..”ok”…why did i say ok ..and for what?…. ..this is how Ajay devgan signs a project these days ….. .let me get back to work ….continue with the e-mail ….its Aamir’s Ghajini…its remake of memento …why on earth does aamir has to do this ….aamir please please acknowledge the original…..Memento was f&*#ing awesome …was complex but worth it …..That reminds me of a movie very similar to my coding style …..very simple code ….make it too complex so that my pm is in awe of my coding style….ya thats Pulp fiction ….and as my friend says ….the movie is damn good ..but i don’t like it …..there’s too much work pressure ……let me have some coffee …..the coffee seems so refreshing …..yikes ..it sucks ..the taste sucks….its like a Yashraj film ……when will they respect the audiences or they seriously believe that we Indains are morons who have IQ below 0 …..common grow up …even Sanjay Gupta has grown up…now he is copying from sources unknown to common people ………..I have to drink this coffee ..no other option …..

let me get back to work …..wait let me check PFC ……no new blog from last 2 hours …..forget it ..back to work …..
it’s 5.30 pm ….hmm …will work tomorrow ……

    v alll go thru the same thin in office!!! this n facebook.. lol

  18. ravptor on February 2nd, 2008 10:36 am

    Anand, and how can you justify or be passionate when u do that to ur work? Dude, ur projects due 10days back. How about this, what if your passion was seriously films and ur in that place where your are in that creative space, there are perks that come with it like ur work now, like PFC during office which in that case would be loads of parties and beautiful women - how would you do justice to the process of films then?

    I am a S/W guy, I am on PFC full time but c’on, glorifying not doing work to dream about passion and not do nothing abt it? Dude…

    No disrespect but I have a beef with all who say work sucks when PFC/films happen… give equal importance to both dude… one will help you fuel the other…

    Cheers!

  19. Shatrughan on February 2nd, 2008 12:42 pm

  23. Anand Kadam on February 2nd, 2008 10:11 pm

  25. suchita b on February 2nd, 2008 11:52 pm

    @Neerja and Play, and don’t ignore the spiderman pose which Toby Mcguire gave in his black spidy suit; sitting on his toes and the hair flying, Yeah!! the good and the bad, copying the poses also now.

  26. Saurabh on February 3rd, 2008 9:20 am

    Not just for software guys, it’s true for advertising guys too. The only difference- we often call it a day at 5:30 am. If only I stopped visiting PFC every ten minutes, I wd be able to leave at 5:30 pm n watch a movie.

  27. vivek on February 3rd, 2008 1:24 pm

    @playback
    i thought that painting was called cafe terrace at night

  28. $iDs on February 3rd, 2008 10:21 pm

    Well i have just started doing the S/W professional thing and you have just given me a preview of my time right now and the days which will play out in the future. but i think I agree we guys(S/W pfc’ites should do something about it). Hoping to read Stardust or some random publication an interview of an actor or a director or some techincian remembering his days spent on pfc at office.

    What are the chances????8-|;);)

  29. Anand Kadam on February 4th, 2008 4:53 am

    $iDs…
    even i think the same..if i spend the time i spend on pfc on writing my scripts…i would have finished it by now..anyways late is better then never…

  30. P on February 5th, 2008 3:16 am

    @filmibhai
    All S/W engineers are glorified clerks is like saying all film waalahs are nachne gaane waale bhaands.
    You need to know better dude.

  31. P on February 5th, 2008 3:21 am

    @filmibhai
    And btw if you are reading PFC in the comfort of your home/office and interacting with so many people sharing ideas thats all because of some anonymous S/W engineer working hard somewhere.

  32. PLAYBACK on February 5th, 2008 6:24 am

    @ P ,….u disagree ? lol,…how are u different ? :)

  33. Sushant Srivastava on February 5th, 2008 10:09 pm

    Let me tell your narrative style has a name:
    Stream of Consciousness

  34. Anand Kadam on February 6th, 2008 12:52 am

    Sushant Srivastava ….thanks..i never knew that…

  35. P on February 6th, 2008 5:21 am

    @PLAYBACK
    It depends who are you looking at in either field. When you talk of films you talk of Fellinis and Goddards but when it comes to S/W professionals all you know is some of your friend or relative wasting his time playing cards on his PC in one of those great outsourcing firms like TCS and Wipro. You conveniently forget about people like Bill Gates who have made the PC revolution possible.
    And though its no use educating you, there is lots of original research and product development work happening in India now in not just software but in other technology areas as well. If a S/W startup in US does not have significant India presence, then VCs dont even look at it. But how would you know? You people are into demeaning others without having any accomplishment against your own names.
    Get well soon mamu.

  36. PLAYBACK on February 6th, 2008 8:16 am

    @P ….how did u assume I have no acclompishments in my name ? lol,… And having written S/W myself,…I know about the industry ,…even the present,… Focus outta the desktop dude ! :)

  37. PLAYBACK on February 6th, 2008 8:21 am

    ….and yeah,…I think filmibhai meant the USUAL Indian brigade abroad…which is quite true!

  38. zzzz on February 6th, 2008 9:18 am

    what a sooper read!!!:)

  39. Anand Kadam on February 6th, 2008 9:21 am

    zzzz ..thanks buddy :)

  40. filmibhai on February 6th, 2008 9:47 am

    P - ‘You conveniently forget about people like Bill Gates who have made the PC revolution possible.’

    what a revolution ! ppl’ve become slaves to the same computer they thought wud ease their lives .. gee !
    the work most sofwre companies make their slaves(ok..employees) do can be done by retarded monkeys with a bit of practice and patience .. cheers ! :)

  41. filmibhai on February 6th, 2008 10:09 am

    wake up every morning .. read newspaper in the bathroom .. hurl abuses at the good ol’ netajis .. bear the life sapping traffic jams .. throw a ‘kutte-ka-patta’ (id badge) round ur neck .. deposit urself in ur ac-cubicle .. work/pretend to work .. complain abt the world on some forum .. come back home and get ready for the next iteration ..

  42. nosmoker on February 6th, 2008 10:23 am

    filmibhai-
    wake up every morning .. read newspaper in the bathroom .. hurl abuses at the good ol

  43. P on February 6th, 2008 10:40 am

    @filmibhai
    If you are talking of the ‘USUAL’, that will remain mediocre in every field. In cinema or TV too there is a lot of junk being produced and consumed every day. If everybody was an achiever then being an achiever would be mediocre and you will have to be a super achiever.

  44. filmibhai on February 7th, 2008 12:29 am

    nosmoker -’you need rest.. try not using stuff for an day where their is no software involved..
    software guys are hardworking ppl too..
    just because you
