A Sorry Introduction
right this is the first time i am doing this and it is unnerving as all new things are
it is overwhelming to see what quick gun means to many people. the film is wrapped for shoot and we are in edit right now and we are experiencing the last wave of labor pains so we dont have a complete film yet
the problem is that the producers are under some pressure form their big boys to keep it under wraps and all we have to indicate what could be the film is a - well a promo - like what started the whole thing in 1993. it’s something that one of the guys on the team - amor aditya - someone whose film we will all look forward to - quickly cut from some 15 days of shoot material because the guys with the bucks needed to know how their money was being spent [or so i think]
but here’s the 13 year genesis while i get around to pestering the producer anand surapur [ director of 'the fakir of venice'] to see if we can put it on the net
1993 we do quick gun. no one expects the mad response it generates. we benefit by getting the benefit of doubt in anything we do in the next 4 years and channel [v] has a great time in india. we do good work, people like it and all is well. we also get gary davy the then head of star tv who insists we make a film. so we write a script in our spare time and for some reason or the other we do not get around to doing it then - also i was shit scared of making a film just when i was barely coming to terms with handling 60 seconds at a time.
the other thing is i am not the inventor of quick gun murugan. rajesh devraj is the guy who thought it up and wrote the plot the firts time and the film that we are making.
i quit salaried work in 2000 - seemed a good year to start renting out my work instead of my time. everyone i showed the script to laughed and then said no one in his right mind would want to make the film. i do remember one of the more honest responses was from ram gopal verma, who read about 7pages in front of me and looked up bewildered. he said, shashank i cannot even begin to understand this film, all i can advise is you don’t make this your first film.’ so i did waisa bhi hota hai -2, and hawked this puppy around. 2005 the mood changed; people were willing to consider it if a star was attached or it was in hindi. i basically didnt want the script changed and the role needed someone with conviction. so tamil and english with subtitles for both languages was what i would settle for
anand surapur was part of channel [v] in the earlier days and the maker of udham singh which i wrote. he had moved on to advertising and then to filmmaking with ‘the fakir of venice’ an amazing story that he heard and then rajesh devraj and he wrote. in his looking for money for the film he took on a deal that very few of us are willing: to set up a company which will produye many films - as a director i am damned if i will produce unless no one else wants to make the kind fo things we believe in. so anand’ phat phish which made ads and videos now moved into film gear. iw as working on a film ‘the betel nut killers’ when anand strolled up and offerd to do that too if i did quick gun first. of course now he laughs and says just do this one ok
anand did not read the script or get involved in anything about the story. he just sat and offered three things: he cast the main lead - rajendra prasad, he then said go into high end special effects and damn the cost, and then he said we should acquire some old great tamil songs - and i tell you they are the most invaluable contributions any producer could have made. his more regualr job tends to be as peacemaker between my friend rajesh devraj and me as we have a particularly frictional work relationship. i guess he is particular and i am frictional.
where we stand is we have amor’s promo which is delicious but as i said when i saw it ‘ damn, now i have to make a movie like that’. till day before we were in talks with ilayaraja but that is now out because of some stupid misconceptions that this is a english film and therefore the costs of producing down south are prohibitive. but am talking to a man who has done some icnredible things with retro-sound background score here and am truly up beat about that.
so you guys know the history now. the film will be ready in november. devi [devraj] has written an extremely difficult script - i dont know any script that has the shades this one has. it celebrates imitation, mythology, superstition, expansive tamil imagination, music, and of course the battle of vegetarianism and non vegetarianism; our interpretation of a cowboy is a guy who protects cows from becoming a beef kheema dosa
that’s intro enough i guess.
but yeah, i am sorry that you guys will have to wait for the promo till we can get approvals.

WOW!!! welcome aboard Shashank babu!!
sir maja aa gaya.. thank you ..next time i promise we will play more TT after we are more drunk..
I remember last year when we had just started PFC, striker telling me about Beetle nut killers and pointed me to the movie’s website. I think (and I may be wrong here) you were in the US back then…
Quick Gun is a wild cult classic as was Udham Singh… but Quick Gun has its own charm… for me I thought in the later days Udham Singh was stretched thin… but Quick Gun remained intact - air tight freshness…
Thank you Sirjee for opening your diary and sorry about publishing this post from your drafts when you were not looking… kya karein… raha nahin gaya… please don’t Mind It!!! :d
Shashank sir, welcome to PFC…thanks for sharing the journey of Quick gun!! Fell in love with the promo!!
shit! u shelved betel nut killers! that sounded damn interesting as a concept with blood flowing from the supari et al :(
Shashank…an absolute welcome to PFC…I actually treasure Waisa bhi hota hai - PART 2 as one of the truly great quirky movies to come out of India - all time..and you being frictional…stories out of Channel V then are practically mythological now..Quick Gun has possibilities to go the whole hog…Movie, Gaming, Merchandising, Ground Events, Reality show on TV, Stand up comedy, Theme parks…the whole bit!!! I am probably bursting with marketing ideas since yesterday when I wrote a request in OZ’s write up…If nicely handled by the presenters…this could be an international franchise with all its quirky flavors in place!!!
Cheers SG!!!
hi shashank,
just a bit curious to know why you have thanked names like joel & ethan coen and quentin tarantino in the end credits of WBHH P2?
also what about the other mentioned directors?
welcome aboard shashank pleasure to have to hear…waiting to hear your experiences working with rajendra prasad and Ilyaraja…..
welcome aboard shashank .. a privilige to have u here ….
Cannot wait for the trailer and the film !!!
Shashank
rajendra prasad is brilliant but not many outside AP have heard of him. Was wondering how anand chanced upon him…care to share?
I loved Waisa Bhi Hota Hai - Part II - one of the most under-rated classics of the decade (”meri toh death hi ho gayee” - that was classically hilarious)! Am already looking forward to Quick Gun Murugun.
Shashank, will the movie have an OST? I loved the music of Waisa Bhi Hota Hien.
and i hope this is not for the last time…!
Welcome to PFC sir…great to have you.
Welcome Shashank and thanks for opening your account…..It’s privilige….
oz, nope.. he was still in india, just working on pre-production for BNK back then..
shashank, we had met early last year when you were getting set for BNK and i think you were gonna have me audition for that since you guys were getting ready to shoot during the summer of last year in canada.. just let me say what a pleasure it was to meet you.. and here’s wishing you the best for both QGM and BNK. looking forward to them.. cheers!
The director of Waisa Bhi Hota Hain - Part 2… and Quick Gun Murugan…
Talented director Shashank Ghosh, takes off blogging by writing about the famous character of Channel [v] - Quick Gun Murugan and what inspired him to make the character into a movie which is soon to be released……
Good to have you here at PFC. Really enjoyed Waisa Bhi… looking forwards to your next.
“a cowboy is a guy who protects cows from becoming a beef kheema dosa”, we all want to meet him Mr Ghosh… waiting… with bad breath :)
Quick on the draw,Murugan’s tongue that is..and that did the trick..loved the character..but can’t brush aside Uddham Singh lightly..maybe coming from Chandigarh-Haryana region I relate to it more easily..Welcome to PFC..Awaiting your QGM saga..
We are waiting! But Shashank, pleaaaaaaaaaaaase, get Ilaiyaraaja on board. I couldn’t quite understand what the problem was - surely can’t be budget - and no guy ever, no matter the retro experience, can fill his shoes. I hope the ‘old great tamil songs’ are still part of the plan. If it’s not a secret, could you give us a clue as to which ones they might be? Having grown up on tamil songs, we could be your sounding board… All the best, you guys rock…
loved Waisa Bhi Hota hai, part 2, waiting for part 1..Hope you make it soon:)
suchita, part 1 was the first 5 minutes of the movie… (am I right?… :-? think so)
I am not sure, must have missed it…mumbai traffics:(
Oz can you please delete that msg of mine about the waise bhi hota hai part 2, my misinformation, you were right.. thanx

Truly enjoyed Waisa Bhi Hota Hai….. Eagerly awaiting QGM…
shashank…great to hav u here. welcome onboard. par woh promo apun ko mangta hai to mangta hai…warna quick quick gun gun…:((:-?:-w[-(
shashank
good luck with murugan. one of the truly original concepts to come out of V back in its heyday before they turned it into chhaayahaar.
loved part 2.
My meeting with shashank telling him I wanted to write -
Shashank - why do you want to be a writer?
dabba - I am a writer. I want to get paid to write.
Shashank - Why do you want to get paid?
dabba - It would be nice. Beer and coffee money.
Shashank - Do it on the side. No good writing has ever come out of money.
The check comes.
Shashank - I’ll pay for his coffee.
Dabba packs his bags and leaves Mumbai.:d
:) very interesting anecdote.
Anand Surakar seems like a fantastic character for an as yet unmade film… the altar (or is it alter?) ego of Rabbi’s Bulla Ki Jaan*a MeiN kaun!
I believe he has offered to produce Kamal Swaroop’s next film to be made with a whopping budget of 20 crores.
Now this sounds like the highest end of narcissism where instead of standing in front of the mirror you actually enter the mirror space (is it comparable to the Lacanian mirror stage, I wonder!) and actually become the image of your own image.
Enjoyed reading your subversive trivia. It opens up the mischievous space for reflection - baithe bithaaye! As we say in Delhi - “kya baat hai!”
Shashank Ghosh,
I am from Chennai. I’m sorry I couldn’t catch WBHH Pt. 2 in the theatres. I did watch it on DVD. Sir, it is one of the finest films, if not the finest hindi film in its genre that I have seen till date. It is truly the greatest adaptation of the Pulp Fiction-Snatch-True Romance culture to the Indian screen. Everything about that film impressed me. The way each scene drew to a close, whether it be with the lights going off or a subtle handheld video game saying, “Game Over”. I gave my DVD to 18 people in all and then discussed the film as there was so much. Yours is a cult film sir. That is how a gangster-comedy should be made. I pray that you made profits or at least made back your money. Warsi’d speech on goggles is something we couldn’t have had in an English film. The references to the Japanese Mafia and the finger-chop had the sardonic humour that is conspicuous from its absence in every hindi film. And just like Tarantino, the songs were something that would remain etched in memory. You are the Indian Tarantino without even proclaiming to be, unlike a certain other director who goes by the first name of his stock actor.
Cheers to you Sir.
A true fan.
WBHH P2 count: 23 (in the past 1 year)
W.B.H.H.P.2 was WICKED!!!!!

Now give us more like that, LOL!!!
