A watershed moment in recent times
Khosla ka Ghosla works for me at different levels. The biggest connect this movie provided was on a human level. I would like to bring up three delightful scenes that touch upon the middle class sensibilities in particular but at another level Indians in general
Scene 1
Dialogue between Kamal Kishore Khosla (Anupam Kher) and Mr Sahni (Vinod Nagpal)
This scene is a mixture of middle class sensibilities (read confused) and objective look of the situation by Mr Sahni. The nail on the head is hit when Mr Sahni says to Mr Khosla, “What is your problem? … You had a problem when your son was not standing by you and now you have problem when he trying to stand by you”
The situation is not unfamiliar to most Indians, as I feel the parents themselves are not sure what to expect from their children, they would like their children to be modern yet traditional, a dichotomy that is very difficult to relate.
Scene 2
Dialogue between Chironji Lal Khosla (Cherry) (Parvin Dabas) and Asif Iqbal (Vinay Pathak) sitting in an auto rickshaw
After a long silence Cherry says “Thank you Asif bhai” to which there is an instantaneous reaction from Asif “Arre kya boldi ya yaar … Jai Mata de” and they hug which I feel came very close to the real experience in the circumstance given. Kudos!!! For the actors to pull off the scene with such panache!
Scene 3
Kishen Khurana (Boman Irani) realising he is being duped
Kishen Khurana enquires about the whereabouts of Mr Sethi and get to know that he has been coned, says “Ye baat baahar nahi jana chaye” the scene cut to laughter club headed by Kamal Kishore Khosla with his family painfully trying to laugh when Kishen Khurana says “Do it properly …”
A brilliantly executed scene
Khosla ka Ghosla may not feature (I think it does deserve) amongst the great cinema list of Indian movies but definitely according to me a watershed moment. For me movie has to have great moments and Khosla ka Ghosla provided with plenty of them. There are at least half a dozen more scenes that I may have picked which is a rarity in Hindi cinema as either they get too preachy (Art house cinema) or outright foolish (Commercial Cinema) and if the director, screenplay writer really does have a good story to tell it needs to be compartmentalised into different block, each one its own pulls its weight by providing great moments but at the same time carries on the narrative without slaking the pace.
For me Khosla ka Ghosla works on all levels, great cinema shot with utmost sincerity to the source material. Bring on many more Khosla ka Ghosla as it provides you with a birds eye view of the society we live in.

Totally agree, harsha- I just LOVE this film in a way I can’t quite explain- each moment in the film in fact is a gem…it’s one of those few films about which I wouldn’t like to change anything at all- def one of my all time favs:):)>-
wonderful movie
Gulzar, Hrishikesh, & Basu were great at making films that provided a birds eye view of our society. And I cannot think of that many directors of this era who are capable of achieving that… :-?
oh and, you forgot the Onbir scene! That scene, “Aap Nahege”, Anupam buying bear scene, Boman’s entry scene, Boman meeting Nischol in the hotel, and “Jai Mata Di” are my favorite scenes. In fact, all the scenes were just…
how you can forget line “Ek baar aap ke saath baitna hai” by Boman …:-?:-?
Harsha, Nice post
I like the Movie,.
Somehow I found this movie is like, French Cinema, or European,..
I allways say that ,
that is my inspiration:)
I think the most touching scene was near the end, when Khosla ji near-faints standing on his plot. You spend two hours laughing at Khosla and his motley crew, and then you realize that this is after all an old man. It’s very well executed imho. Is there a hidden meaning here, I wonder. Chirounji standing at distance is symbolic of Khosla’s fear that his son is growing apart, I guess.
On a lighter note, my fav line, boman irani to ranvir shorey. “jaa, tu apna pepsi le kar aa. ja dekh kya hua tere pepsi ko”
)
@Shekhar Shimpi
Khosla could possibly be inspired by a french flick. I once saw a french film with a similar premise on TV5. It ended with a land shark getting conned by one his victims. Like Khurana, the land shark decides to sweep things under the carpet.
hey Sheikhchilli, wow I have to search that movie man:)
and i thought this was a true indian gem.
anyways i still love the movie,the performances[anupam kher did every shitty movie possible after that],the music etc
one of the few indian movies that really made me laugh…
Nice sweet post, just like the movie. Short and to the point.
Would love to read such a post on the all time favorite, Angoor
