So I’m glad i didn’t go by the reviews, and went to see ASR for myself. It’s a fun movie!
Firstly, ASR is original; not another hollywood rip-off. That’s reassuring, i’ll take those anytime.
The sense of humour is whacky, with a wide range between the loud and the subtle. It takes some getting used to, but there are lots delightful little details to notice besides the stuff that is up front; like the makra man taking extra care of his make up before putting on his mask, or the notice at the lake that says “reserve energy for the return journey, towing charges extra”. Its funny because these are the kind of absurdities we don’t notice in real life. I’m sure i read a news article somewhere about municipal guys spraying deodorant on trash too.
The dream song-and-dance sequences referenced a lot of old iconic hindi film devices, which are now just hilarious; i’d forgotten about the necking flowers, the swirling sarees in the back, and the colour-powder bombs.
I was pleasantly surprised by the music. The minimalist jazz colours on “more piya” was so good. I’m sensitive about background scores and i would rate ASR’s above average. Its not easy to make background scores that have character, and yet does not jump off the visuals.
Numerous peripheral characters all did well,but special mention has to be made about the two body guards who have just one line in the whole movie.
The story about the terrorist-who-lost-his-heart is a gem which could do with a little more polishing, though. It could’ve been a powerful and poignant story. I thought the rollercoaster gun-on-the-run story somewhat overwhelmed that track.
And what a spectacular piece of title animation! I have to watch it several times to really enjoy all the layers.
Go see ASR. Keep an eye on all the action that is happening out of focus. While you’re at it, see if you can spot the director who appears in 3 shots towards the end of the movie.
Too loose and dull script and the comedy was slapstick for my taste. The only good thing is Vijay MAurya and Kay Kays screen time. Shreyas is a complete waste. I liked Mann Gaye Mughal- e-Azam better than this. Go figure.
‘Aagey se Right’ has definitely given a different direction to humor in Indian cinema. Peppered with word play and innuendos this film is a beautiful satire on the way things are around us. I would say, it is a rather pragmatic way to mirror the contemporary society that has the holocaust of terror and lack of direction to it. The only glitch is the duration of the film. Personally, I felt that we could have done with a little bit of stay on the funny takes at the goon’s factory. Perhaps they were something that was sacrificed for the sake of the story. All in all a terrorist losing his heart and being transformed by love was an interesting take when you consider what’s happening around us. If cinema inspires people in a wrong way then cinema could also be a corrective tool for the society. I am definitely not a critic, but ‘Aagey se right’ was an onion waiting to be peeled with something new in every layer. Way to go!
An intelligently funny film with hilarious twists and turns -starts off with a cool animated title sequence and you know it will be a little different than the standard bollywood comedy.
The highlight is the beach scene between jaanu and raghav – creates some memorable dialogues – watch out for hidden gags in every scene!
Hilarious! After so long, we find great comedy in Indian cinema where the slapstick stuff is perfectly blended into intelligent and smart moments. I for one don’t like slapstick, senseless comedy and this movie is certainly not that. Kay Kay is amazing as usual and so is Shreyas. It’s a laugh out loud comedy that I would recommend to anyone. I love the scene in which Shreyas imitates Rajesh Khanna. The mixture of “shudh urdu” with Tapori is ingenious. This is when situational comedy intertwines itself into character based comedy. A must see, do not miss it.
Full too hilarious TP hai boss. . .Vijay Maurya(Raghav) and Kay Kay(Janu) rock this movie totally. . .Mast entertainment. . .Some of the gags and dialogues(including those of hit films used at the most oppurtune moments) are ribtickling. . .As a whole the movie is okay but still manages to make the theatre laugh out loud most of the time
Definitely worth a watch! It is outrageously funny in parts, so funny that you think of some dialogues the next day and find yourself laughing uncontrollably. KK’s deadpan funniness was the best part of it – what an actor!

This is Abhijeet Deshpande and I am the Dialogue writer of AAGEY SE RIGHT. I
am confused. Confused about whether to be happy or sad. Happy that the
critics haven’t hated my work… or sad that they haven’t love the film.
Happy that the audiences who are going to the theatres are loving the
film…. or sad that not enough of them are going to the theatres in first
place. Finally should I be happy that the name of the film isn’t ‘KAMBAKKHT
ISHQ’ or sad that because its not KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, our critics haven’t given
it 3.5 stars.
Thus in this somewhat confused yet contented feeling I would like to talk a
bit about Aagey se Right. The Director of the film Indrajit, his writer
Manoj and myself we wanted to make a seriously funny film about life in
Mumbai. When I say seriously funny… I mean we didn’t want people slipping
over banana peels and some desperate toilet humor which makes us laugh more
at the film-maker than at the joke per se.
Crazy times have befallen us. Either we can continue to be cynical about the
going-ons or we can laugh about it. We wanted to laugh about it. As
Mumbaikars we are killed, robbed, molested, lynched and sacked daily. So we
wanted a kind of cinema which isn’t as utopian that it eradicates the pain,
but somewhat pragmatic that it softens the impact.
A cop’s desperation to find his lost gun is an irony on those thousands of
cops who inspite of having their guns let law and order crumble (Political
interference or whatever reason). Its like asking… Ek policewale ki gun kho
gayi hai… Bahut Bura hua. Waise agar gun nahi bhi khoti to kya ukhad leta.
By making Dinkar an unlikely hero… we wanted to highlight the fact that for
a cop’s heroism to be acknowledged and given its due… he has to be a loser
like Dinkar. That’s 4th estates sorry world of false bravado we live in.
A terrorist comes to Mumbai and transforms because he finds love. All of us
fall in love with someone or the other at some or the other point. Even
after falling in love we spit and litter and we break traffic rules and we
violate all values while traveling in a bus or train. How can we type that
lovely sms to our sweetheart and the next moment spit paan and tobacco on
the road. May be we’re not that much in love… that it makes is feel like
being better human beings.
We think we have made a good film though I don’t deny we could have been
better in every aspect. Please pen down what you feel about AAGEY SE RIGHT.

Please do not feel disheartened or ’sad’ in anyway. I think you have done a brilliant job in blending dark humour with slapstick humour. To have a good laugh out loud is tougher than shooting a dark movie and to do both in many ways is impossible. So please be proud of your achievements because it is noteworthy. The critics of popular papers like Times of India (giving your movie a 1.5/5) are not critics, they are gallery players. They can’t tell a movie from a documentary and go about judging film-makers who put their heart and soul in it. I believe that you have put a lot of thought into each aspect of this movie and most of it, though subtle, resonates with an audience which is great. Forget the critics, we as an audience, appreciate your work and are looking forward to more in the future.
By the way, the blending of urdu with tapori is the most innovative and ingenious aspect of the movie. Loved every dialogue of it.

This movie had me smiling to myself. It is not side-splitting stuff but the detailing in this satire is what makes it worth a watch. The ridicule and exaggeration used in the scenes, combined with some great performances make this movie breezy and fun-to-watch.
‘Mahiya’ is what I am playing right now on my itunes! And the video is mighty cool too.
A tongue-in-cheek view of the times we live in. I hadn’t gone in expecting some intense story. This movie is more about the ironical medley made by all the caricatured characters. KayKay is comic in his intense act of terrorist-in-love. Shreyas in the ‘Mahiya’ song was something else!

There was some serious crowd participation at the theatres with dialogue prompting, guffaws and what not! Watch this in a theatre with a gang of friends!

Even though i have written lyrics for Aagey Se Right (Maahiya, love flashback, hippie tu jhoom) and i must admit I have a soft corner for the film but I am writing this more as an audience.
I think the film is quite good for its genre. It must have been a similar experience for the audience of Jaane bhi do yaaron in the early eighties. I can’t compare two genres of filmmaking and hence i feel that ASR has succeeded in getting what it was supposed to get…laughs.
andaaz apna apna is another film which comes to mind…talking about the genre and as far as i remember it ran to empty theatres. But i don’t know anyone from my generation who doesn’t swear by the film. It’s a cult film and ASR is surely following it to the tee.
The KayKay-Vijay maurya combo is surely hilarious. So is Shreyas’ buffoon inspector act. The Dilaogue Writer ought to take a bow. Though i definitely feel the film could have been shortened further.
Way to go Indrajit Nattoji. With his debut film he has definitely been brave in choosing his genre…and after watching the film…rightfully so.

u know who i am.just writing in to say i have casted entire cast for the film.i loved the script initially then fall in love with the final draft.making is really good,actors have done their 100% effort,all the team and technicians had put their soul into it.i was chief a.d and casting director of this film.poeple want to see balaji types of stuff on screen and rakhi ka swayamwer kind of shows,for me its big nooo noo but i m not class neither mass i am me and i will not ever watch so called fucking entertaining stuff like dadagiri,do knot distrb,daddycool.where is the creativity dude??balls….
I think the film is really funny. It makes you laugh. And that’s what the director intended to do. Plus i quite like the small spoofy bits like the “Honey Buney” bit from Pulp fiction, the gun flying past the moon bit from E.T. and Shehnaz flying in the song with Kay Kay from Woody Allen’s Everyone says i love you.
According to me, the only trouble with the film is that the film maker tried to make every sequence in the film funny. So in certain places the comedy stops being effortless and starts appearing forced. Thus (by my very limited knowledge) if there were certain sequences in the middle which switched gear, where the audience had time to breathe, the rest of the film would be a lot more funnier.
All in all, the film was good fun. Not just for me but the rest of the audience in the cinema hall too :-)

AN ABSOLUTELY DREADFUL FILM-WHAT A SHAME BECAUSE IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER.A GOOD PREMISE BUT THE DIRECTOR GOT TOO CLEVER FOR HIS OWN GOOD AND MADE A MESS IT. SOME SPECTACULARLY POOR ACTING BY SHERNAZ AND SHREYAS. VIJAY MAURYA WAS THE SAVING GRACE WITH A TRULY SUPERB PERFORMANCE. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie- had not heard about it, but just stumbled upon it- and glad I did… a lot of people in the forum seem to agree that it was a great movie… KK’s character was brilliant- unique idea and of course KK was fabulous. Shreyas is starting to repeat himself and his style of comedy is becoming predictable- it was alright for this role- certainly not phenomenal but not the worst either. I don’t understand why Abhijeet Deshpande is reacting in this manner- surely he is not surprised by the response- doesn’t everybody know what popular cinema constitutes these days- I’m sure they must’ve discussed what segment they were making the movie for, and if they thought this would pull in ShahRukh Khan fans or something, they were way off the mark- people who appreciate experimentation and interesting plots and treatment will appreciate the movie- which hopefully is good enough to push them to do different work- if not, then I guess the people who do like what you do get nothing in return and you cater to the people who don’t give a hoot about anything you did in the movie- they will come in as long as you have vulgar jokes and a big and famous star cast… make your choice, but I hope you will not join the many other film makers who use a conveyor belt to make movies- or else I’ll feel ripped off.

Though there are three more months to go, I doubt this will be bettered.

When I watch movies, I prefer to concentrate on every line, every movement of person or camera and every emotion experienced by it. People who make movies think about every second of the movie and every frame and cut. I am not part of a popular audience that msgs, sms, bbms, posts online or tweets while watching a movie, and that too, a very good movie. I know our country’s audience such as yourself might do that, chit chat, walk out to get popcorn, sms your loved one or even check your e-mail. Good for you. I was just surprised that people who are “passionate” as OZ claims, do such things while watching movies. Anyway, let’s leave it at that.
And to answer your question Tejas, I own a blackberry.

“You know light because of darkness, you know recognition because of obscurity and you know good movies because of the pathetic one!”… Well this has been my Mantra for everything and I make it a point to apply it when it comes to watching movies… So much so that I have gone and watched movies like Love Story 2050 and Tashan :-D
I never rely on published movie reviews because what applies to others may not apply to me.
Watching “Aagey se Right – Gun on the run” was one such choice. Besides the fact that I always keep asking my husband for directions and ‘ASR’ seems to be his favourite phrase, we with our crazy bunch of adventurous friends decided to go for ASR. We had done a movie marathon the previous day watching Quickgun Murugan both in English & Hindi (in the theatre), Blonde & Blonder and Shaun of the Dead (at home), so the following day we decided to finish the rally with ASR. The trailers were fun to watch and yet even before we went to watch the movie, we had decided to face the music if our decision backfired. Sitting through a pathetic movie requires strength of character and courage for sure.
We entered the theatre, to be greeted by around 50 sitting ducks, wondering if we were birds of the same feather and not knowing what to expect from the movie.
Our brotherhood began enjoying the movie to the hilt from the time the movie began. The occupied seat count may not have a success story to tell, but rest assured those that were occupied, were completely in splits! The movie succeeded in entertaining me and my gang of buddies so I refute all the bad and not-so-good reviews about the movie. The movie did its job well. Zimple!
My favourite character was the south Indian goon played by Vijay Maurya. I think his character was drawn out beautifully by the director and the dialogues were unequivocally funny. ‘Socha to Locha’ & ‘Gintimating’ became our fave to-be-used phrase for the next couple of weeks. It was fun to watch KK Menon in a comic avatar and Shreyas Talpade was his usual effortless self. It was very refreshing to see Bharati Achrekar after her memorable role in Waagle ki Duniya.
The movie had its supreme moments of comic realization, and the basic plot of the movie – the inspector’s missing gun and a terrorist turning lover fell snugly in place. What was also enjoyable was the entire audience coming up with their own wise-cracks, positively induced by the environment created by ASR ?. A comedy isn’t complete in itself until if it fails to induce comic alteration in the audience’s behaviour. ASR surely seems to have achieved this, securing its place in my movie collection. Maft Movie hai, Boff – as we Kamineys would like to put it!
Here’s wishing Indrajit Nattoji another successful story-telling… and hope that his next movie better his work in this one. I’m sure the director needs to be equally crazy to be able to bring out the crazy-best in this movie!!
