AAJA NACHLE- Madhuri strikes back

AAJA NACHLE- Madhuri strikes back

Director: Anil Mehta

Overall Grading: B

“Madhuri Dixit” strikes back with Aaja Nachle. This is Madhuri’s come back film after interval of 5 years (Devdas-2002).

Aaja Nachle’s story is about a theatre called “Ajanta” and a dancer, her feelings about Ajanta and how she manages to stop Ajanta’s demolition. Story background is different but basic idea is same like team building, internal clash in team, and one goal for team etc etc. which were seen in Lagaan, Chek De India and recent Goal.

Madhuri is central character in the film and after long time a hard core commercial film having female lead has come; which is appreciable. Her presence in every scene is the main attraction. She manages her performance well but looks thin as compared to her earlier films like Tezaab, Beta…. in which she was healthy beauty. Others Kunal Kapoor, Jugal Hanshraj are average. Konkna Sen Sharma, Raghuvir Yadav, Vinay Pathak and Ranveer Shauri are excellent as usual. Akshay Khanna and Irrfan Khan are surprise special appearances. Whenever they come on screen; a magic appears. The scene between them while playing golf is excellent.

Apart from Madhuri, another hero of the film is Choreography and Music. Vaibhavi Merchant has beautifully managed all the songs and dance sequences as per the mood and background of the film. Salim Suleman’s music and Piyush Mishra and Jaydeep Sahani’s lyrics are appropriate.

Script is full of emotions. But some of emotions look like artificial (like Sushmita Mukerjee’s speech that her husband is boring, etc. and all of confessions in the climax) as it usually happens in recent Yashraj Movies. People’s (Irrfan Khan, Akhilendra Mishara….) opinion and heart suddenly changes after watching a play…. not digestible

At some stage film’s slow speed makes the film boring. The 20 minute long Nritya Natika in climax might be too boring for audiences (though I enjoyed it).

In short, famous cinematographer Anil Mehta who has handled camera in Lagaan, Kal Ho na Ho, Kabhi Alvida na Kehna, Vir Zaara…. has made an usual, average and typical Yashraj candy floss movie where after some difficulties all is well at the end.

You must have seen a different movie because the one I saw was just plain boring.

I love Madhuri but what was she thinking to accept this movie. The script was filled with potholes and made no sense. Even the music and dance numbers were a let down although Madz was good.

    What a wasted comeback opportunity.

i think carol u saw the film after reading the reviews. In that case one goes for a film with a preset POV abt a film.

With due respect to wat u felt abt the film i wud again say that i didnt found the film to be that bad.it was ok.

Tarun, actually my preset POV was to love the movie because it was Madhuri’s comeback vehicle. However the movie was cringeworthy except for the joy of seeing Madhuri on screen. Much as I love Madz, I was also embarassed for her for being in this crap.

Bottomline is the script made absolutely no sense and had a lot of WTF moments.

BTW I ignore critics and form my own opinions since most critics and I have differing tastes.

    This is a good movie.
Every actor, or for that matter every human being grows with age. Madhuri Dixit here gives a very mature performance with all sensibility and good sense. She , as Dia in her comeback role fits her character to a T (sans Dhak-dhak)
As for the movie, it is a genteel, and simple story, replete with ironies of everyday life. The characters are nowhere close to stereotypes. Stereotypes don’t have identities, you don’t feel for them. It is a different case here. These characters have intentions, and ambitions,. You care for them, and celebrate with them. A bittersweet tale about a government officer wanting to impress his wife, a tomboy wanting to win over her boyfriend, a rogue transforming himself through the character he plays, a jalebi character,Mohan, who just cannot forget and couldn’t care more for his lost-love, a friend torn between friendship and loyalty. All these stories integrate seamlessly with the backdrop of resurrecting an old theatre.
Dialogues are a high point(They are brilliant, to say the least), performances another.
The songs are bit lengthy and shot larger than scale(my only gripe).
This movie has jalwa, and it shows it with subtlety, not pomp.
