Aamir: Rajkumar Gupta take a bow

All the reviews are pouring in and poring how. Everyone, every reviewer, every critic, every channel is raving about Aamir. Unfortunately i havent seen the movie yet, and am not sure if i will be able to watch it soon, as it maynot release in Dallas. If anyone knows of show timings please do let us know. Well this is not about my take on Aamir, instead its on the take of other reviewers on Aamir and Raj Kumar Gupta and Rajeev Khandelwal, and everyone associated with Aamir.

Never since the release of Black Friday has each and everyone praised of the movie in teh same breathaway..coz i guess both the movies took their breath away…and to think about it, Rajkumar Gupta and Anurag Kashyap were associated with both the movies. From what i have heard and seen of rajkumar Gupta he is the next best thing to happen to Bollywood.

Raja Sen from Rediff on Rajkumar says

it’s the best directorial debut in ages [the film is directed by debutant Raj Kumar Gupta, who assisted Anurag Kashyap in No Smoking], and quite likely the film of the year. There’s more than half of 2008 to follow but it’ll take something both special and spectacular to top this awesome little film, and I honestly don’t see that happening.

and

director Raj Kumar Gupta has achieved this fantastic nugget of festival-worthy cinema with a really low budget, and while scoffing critics may point to the Filipino film Cavite for inspiration — a tall order in itself, this is a wholly original Bombay film — he has shown Aamir to the makers and gotten a no-objection certificate for the same. End the originality/plagiarism debate now; this is our own pikchur, and one we should be proud of.

In the same breath Taran Adarsh says:

One of the prime reasons why AAMIR works, and works big time, is courtesy Rajkumar Gupta’s execution of the subject. The twists in the tale don’t take the beaten path and Rajkumar’s expertise shows while handling this difficult subject. The helplessness of the protagonist has been captured remarkably on celluloid.

Mr.Subhash.K.Jha says:

That debutant director Rajkumar Gupta is able to muster a fair amount of smiles and chuckles in this tale of one day in the life of a man caught in a nightmare that even Franz Kafka would have fond hard to create, let alone condone, is entirely providential

Now that is a fucking bold statement by Mr.Jha. I will take it with a pinch of salt. But, i were rajkumar..i would be on cloud nine..infact just imagining my self for second to be rajkumar is giving me goose bumps…YOU HAVE ARRIVED Rajkumar..you are here to stay…

Here is a youtube video of rajeev Khandelwal talking about Aamir.

Also here is a small trailer of Aamir..i loved the expressions that rajeev gives..check it out yourself

Here is a long trailer of Aamir

The best compliment to Rajkumar comes from raja Sen

I can’t think of a reason not to applaud it, and if you can, tell me now, because I’m watching it in theatres again this weekend

We all know how freaking difficult it is to have a a right balance of team for any movie..and Rajkumar has achiebed it..

Taran Says:

Rajkumar gets able support from his cinematographer [excellent], editor [razor sharp editing] and the composer responsible for the background score [topnotch].

Raja Sen:

Alphonse Roy’s cinematography deserves a 10 on 10. No kidding. This film perfectly marries the concept of a frantic handheld camera with tight, meticulously mounted extreme close ups, the combination giving it balance. When Aamir runs through an overpeopled haze in a fascinating chase sequence, the camera jostles wildly, as if it’s also galloping, breathless and confused, just to keep up. Yet the handheld is never indulged to headache extents, while the tight close shots are steady and assured. Very nice.
the music by Amit Trivedi is gobsmackingly brilliant. It’s been so long since we’ve had an effective theme tune for a Hindi film, and this one features a hauntingly simple violin solo that squirts in — with eclectic and varied measure, playing rollercoaster havoc with tempo and rhythm — just when it should. Awesome. The soundtrack is flawless, jazz tossed in atypical to the whore-and-heat surroundings, and Khusro just when you don’t expect it. Buy the CD now.

SKJ too has some great words for Alphoso and Aarti Bajaj, the editor, who also happens to eb the editor of Black Friday..damn team work…i am jealous..

First-time cinematographer Alphons Roy has done to Mumbai what most movies set in the city have not. He has made Mumbai at once the perpetrator and victim of a socio-political perversity that goes beyond crime and punishment.

Editor Aarti Bajaj cuts the film with a ruthlessness that echoes the film’s subliminal mood. There’s no room in the narration for question marks. Every shot is punctuated by an exclamation mark, every moment means a move forward to an unknown destination. Every glance on the road seems to suggest danger. Every peep is a peril. It’s an amazingly constructed labyrinth of crime and commitment

Critics on Rajeev Khandelwal:

Taran:

Rajeev Khandelwal is remarkable in the title role. The film would’ve fallen flat had it been entrusted to an inferior actor, but Rajeev lends the right shades and emerges trumps. Watch him emote with his eyes in the latter reels mainly, and you realize that he knows the craft so well. An excellent debut!

Raja Sen:

the acting is spot-on. Rajeev Khandelwal has an incredibly compelling screen presence, and is consistently so natural that the fourth wall breaks on its own, and your identification with the character is complete. Meanwhile, on the other end of the phone, Gajraj Rao, shot almost completely in the dark, achieves such in-control fundamentalist menace that he makes you shudder, even when stroking an infant’s cheeks. The supporting cast all look blessedly unfamiliar and have character dripping from them, especially the hotheaded cabbie.

I am super charged up for this..are you? let us know..and if you have seen it, please do send a report and we will be willingly happy to post it..

Go fucking watch this movie..and everytime we discuss about a change in making..i believe this is…if we are not gonne watch it and cry about Bollywood not sudharoing..it is none but us to blame…if you want good movies to be made in Bollywood..we gotta support movies like Aamir..

Great Job Rajkumar Gupta

    I agree with Aditya (15),
isn’t this more like endorsements by convenience, if one hates a certain type of cinema and when the above reviewers praise those movies, we diss them and now they are praising the movie that supposedly fits in the genre that we like, we are quoting them.

On 19, I think it depends the way you read it. If you want to like a movie and the review concurs with your views, it may feel heartfelt.

Having said that, I am not saying Aamir is bad or not worth the good reviews. Its just that we always want acceptance for the cinema we like.

I saw Aamir today in a near empty(3:30pm) multiplex in Faridabad with great expectations. I liked it very much but have my issues with the film. Its a good film but AIN’T FLAWLESS as they are calling out to be…

Raja Sen asks for a reason(”I can’t think of a reason not to applaud it, and if you can, tell me now, because I’m watching it in theatres again this weekend”)

Here it is: Why they chose Aamir only, why not their own guy, any other Muslim anywhere etc. the point is when you are showing something’s happening to the Kafkesque protaganist, when you unravel the mystery you have to answer the WHY? don’t you?(the unconvincing explanation that I could gather in the film is other muslims from all over the world sent aid and aamir didn’t help so they track him and make him part of the plan or make the plan on him!!!) If he is a doctor, make some use of his profession, something that to him is unique which make him the chosen one etc.

or is it taken for granted that because the film is beautifully shot, very short(*), great background score, bold attempt for a debut director, so different from your usual movies, its a rare film etc etc we don’t bother about this detail.

*The other irritating thing was sometimes with the editing. No doubt its very short with interval after 40 minutes or so but just about when the tension is building and reaches the pinnacle and its time to maintain, it all starts fizzling out because you keep staring at the same images for so long…its kind of like EKTA KAPOOR serials where you keep staring at their faces(there its in all the obtuse camera angles possible but here the great P by DOP took care of that)…I mean move on with the proceedings, why build the tension then get us used to it so Iam like okay, I got the thrills- what NEXT>>

The first half is promising. The conversations between Aamir and the man at the other line(Rao) are amazing(the dialog, when Aamir says:”Kisney roka hai…” and continues was superb and he says it so simply. Rajeev Khandelwal is beautiful in his performance, yes thats beautiful alright as he performs and we not only see, but feel, squeeze our noses, vomit, run, beat the goons up in desperation and with great strikes. The twists caught me unawares..and I was pulling my hair apart at the climax..

I still have not watched it yet. May be over the weekend. I sincerely pray that if this is a real good movie it does not end up the JG way on the box-office. Cos it will be fighting with Sarkar Raj for eye-balls.

The point made is just this much. However well-made and well-received, if a film falls in the perview of a remake-debate or “whatever” the modest?makers would like to call it, the Denial is what makes it most unpalatable.

OM: Not that I have watched the film, I can say that this is truly good cinema – a well-made film that deserves to be seen.

Kshitij (22): I think there was no need to explain the ‘why’ of it. Aamir in the film represents an educated, thinking, secular Muslim, who is in direct contrast with the poor and uneducated who the fundamentalists can exploit very easily. In my opinion it was the director’s way of showing the schism that exists within the community. Aamir could have been an MBA, engineer, whatever…the director just chose him to be a doctor. What’s wrong with that?

Brilliant cinematography – largely executed with hidden cameras – is the hero of Aamir. Street shots, head-on walks through Mumbai’s mean streets and mohallas are lensed with extraordinary stealth by Alphonse Roy. Editor Aarti Bajaj goes at the material with surgical precision.

Also, why does director Gupta have to go the DVD-pilfer route? The source, like it or not, is a Filipino movie called Cavite (2005) with virtually the same plot.
    ……….

dont want to sound cynical but every critic is writing almost same thing as if UTV has given them readymade reviews…
how these critics like raja sen..nikhat…khalid etc can write almost same lines?

Adam, a security guard, travels from California to the Philippines, his native land, for his father’s funeral. He arrives in Manila. As he waits, a phone rings in his backpack; he answers it, and a male voice tells him that his mother and sister are captives and will be killed if Adam doesn’t cooperate. Over the next hour, the voice sends Adam by bus, taxi, motorized tricycle, and on foot through an urban landscape of busy streets, cramped apartments, a fetid squatters’ camp, a bank, a cockfighting arena, and a church. Adam’s conversations with the voice cover murder, Islam, jihad, rebellion in Mindanao, and his family. What is it Adam will be commanded to do?

now along with 1000s of rediff viewers i know WHY RAJA SEN SHOULD STOP REVIEWING MOVIES!!!

Appercite the effort for writing the post and giving a response. I am also kind of trying to get into this field and believe have a fair bit of knowledge about cinema and honestly want good cinema to happen. Actually have an ultra orthodox (or is it bad???) view that even a bad film should recover its cost so that film industry keeps functioning and the people associated with industry are able to make a living and the makers realize their mistake and make better cinema but one thing makes me uncomfortable is over praising the film and portraying the film in a way which its actually not and that in turn affects the quality. Without getting too much into technicalities (Aamir needed a strong script like phone booth and a pacy direction specially the climax sequence[told 3 mns and shown around 6 mns], strong reason for picking the doctor etc) Aamir is an average film. I did not call it a bad film. I said I did not like it. Had reasonable expectations especially bcz Mr.Kashyap and his protege are associated with it. Would have called it a brave attempt if it was not a remake of Cavite.I liked ‘No Smoking’ a lot. The subject did not demand logical explanations and difficult to categorize in a genre (even dark) and it was a ‘personal’ film but Aamir did. Aamir lacked the grit and pace of a taut thriller. Read that original was far superior. But still believe films such as Aamir should be encouraged so that ‘Cinema’ does well.

    Some thoughts about AAMIR.
Each and every moment is special. Right from the open mouthed deep carefree sleep to the eternal sleep, right from the heart tugging wink and a smile to the heart wrenching you cannot hurt me anymore smile it is a journey of an array of extreme raw emotions etched on an extreme raw and rustic face stripped of all artificiality.
Rajeev Khandelwal is Aamir ali. He does not just get in the skin of the character, but into the cell and the DNA of the character – the aam admi. And it is not just the emotions but also the demeanour and the body language.
Not once does he take the easy way out and slides or rubs his palm over his face or turns away, he faces the camera and emotes some of the finest emotions ever seen. Most of the scenes were supposedly okayed in the first take.
The line that touched the most and will make us ask questions was this one by the prostitute, “tu accha aadmi dikthta re’, ah ha for me his reaction to this line was one of the best. The first nice words aamir hears since he entered his motherland.
The reason as to why Aamir is chosen is obvious. He is a doting brother to his three sisters and brother, a loving son to his widowed mother, the sole bread winner of the family, definitely a prime candidate for emotional blackmail, highlighted in that one terrifying scene.
The end could not have been different, in this mindless mind warfare Aamir realizes the way the twisted mind of the man whose voice he dreads will work. He feels the man who loves his community in a twisted sort of way will not let his loved ones down. He knows he has no other way.
The mind is definitely not capable of reading the credits, the first time, but could do so the second time, so we get to see the man who compared Rajeev Khandelwal to Kapil Dev, the man whose articles told us to expect something different. Vasan Bala hope I read correctly, are u the whispering man.
A huge thanks to every one connected to AAMIR, the director (who is probably the real hero), cinematographer(wonder which was more fun and challenging, shooting the wild cats or Aamir), the music director, the technicians and the actors, it was as if each one was competing with the other to give their best, including the baby and of course even the monkey.

I saw Aamir last Sunday and it’s still lingering in my mind. It is hard to point to a particular aspect of filmmaking that made Aamir the wonder that it is. Everything from the music to the direction to the cinematography is spot on. RKG plays with your mind so ruthlessly that you barely blink throughout the film. This is possibly the best film ever to come out of Bollywood. I don’t care if it’s a copy of Cavite. Changing the setting from Cavite to Mumbai was a big challenge in itself and the director seems to have achieved that flawlessly. It’s a must watch.

The police are also investigating if actor Shobhana was put under any kind of pressure/blackmailed to act in the movie.

I don’t know how to rate this movie. It starts well, goes on to become better in next 15 mins and… that’s it. It just doesn’t go anywhere from there. Loud background score and not much story to tell the camera keeps moving in the Mumbai streets like some documentary. Good one liners in between make you feel that the director had good message to tell but there is no script to support it. It’s a typical bollywood movie with unnecessary songs and slow motions. It is very boring and predictable but the worst part is that it’s totally illogical and far-fetched. I went to watch the movie reading all the good reviews but had forgotten that these are the same very people who rate Veer-Zaara and K3G as Excellent. This one and a half hour movie makes you feel like it was 4 hour long!

Well I loved the movie, it was gripping. I was just thinking, what someone would have done differently in that situation. Esp say if amitabh of 80’s would be around, he would get back to the villain, fought them or outsmarted them with his wits and save his family from him. Or if Akshay was there, he would have kicked each and everyone possible to rescue the family. Sunny deol would have shouted and ran through those streets and might even kidnap the villains family, and got his family back. Aamir was way too real, too simple a man…….. maybe a part of me wanted aamir to get back to the villain, outwit them, outsmart them…….

The cinematographer scores 20 out of 10.
The composer scores 20 out of 10.
The producers score 20 out of 10.
Rajeev Khandelwal scores 40 out of 10.
The director scores 100 out of 10.
