Aapke Deewane is a romantic comedy film having love triangle in the plot. AKD was the debut film for Rakesh Roshan as a Producer.

AKD is a fun film like other films of Rishi Kapoor, came out in the 70s. Influences of films like Khel Khel Mein and Rafoo Chakkar can be found in AKD. Campus based fun of KKM is present in AKD also and like Rafoo chakkar, male character here also pretends to be a woman to earn some money and to win the heart of his love interest.

Hritik Roshan also made his debut in acting with this film. In same year 1980 Hritik was also seen in the film Aasha which was made by his maternal grandfather J Om Prakash. After few years he appeared again as a child actor in Bhagwan Dada.

The twist in the plot of AKD, that both, hindu and muslim boys, love the same girl, who has been brought up by two father like figures and who follow hindu and muslim religions respectively, makes it a little different love story.

* * * *

Vikram Singh (Pran) and Inshallah Khan (Ashok Kumar) are close friends and they raise a girl as their daughter, Sameera (Tina Munim). Both have taught her the rituals of their respective religions.

Both the old men are always in competition to teach her more of their religious teachings and ways to live the life but there is no bigotry hidden behind their motives and both love their daughter very much and both love each other also and value their friendship too much.

Ram (Rishi Kapoor) and Raheem (Rakesh Roshan) are also childhood friends and have always studied and lived together. They join college together and their lives are having lots of fun there at the campus.

There is a good song Ram kare Allah kare teri meri dosti bane rahe and perhaps first time a male break dancer of African origin was used in the song of a hindi film.

But plots of hindi films can not go on to follow simple progress and Ram and Raheem are forced by a hostile bad man Kundan (Ranjit) to fall in to a fight with him. Kundan conspires against them and a girl makes charges against Ram and Raheem that they tried to molest her. Principal of the college expels both, Ram and Raheem, from the college. Without any degree in their hands they come out in the real world leaving behind the shelter of the funful campus. They are unemployed and they have to do something to earn the livelihood.

Song: Mere Dil mein hota hai jo

Destiny takes them to the Sameera’s place and there they find that Vikram Singh and Inshallalh Khan are searching for tutors for their daughter Sameera but they don’t want to keep young tutors. So one person becomes old person and other becomes a lady.

When one remains in his disguised form then other plays his/her young son or nephew.

Both Ram and Raheem fall in to the love with Sameera. She is friendly with both the young men. They try their best to win her heart but they don’t know whom she loves.

Song : Tera Jalwa jhai tauba hai tera jalwa

Old man Vikram Singh tries to convince Sameera that she should love Ram, who is a hindu and Inshallh Khan tries to influence her to go for the love of Raheem, who is a muslim.

Sameera likes both of them and till some stage she does not think beyond the friendship but both the young men have to take decision and they can not afford to finish their friendship also.

They both try to sacrifice their love for the sake of their friendship.

Song : Tum ko khush dekh kar mein bahut khush hua

Now Sameera has to decide and she has to look inside her heart to know to whom she loves.

She finds a lover in the Hindu Ram or Muslman Raheem?

How Director Surendra Mohan has shown a justified climax is an interesting thing to see.

Such roles have been cakewalk for veteran actors Ashok Kumar and Pran and as usual they are fun to watch in such comedy based roles where they try to out do each other and still love and respect each other.

Rishi Kapoor had played many such roles in the past also and he has been quite competent in such light romantic comedy roles. Rakesh Roshan too plays his role with ease. This should be last film where Rakesh Roshan and Rishi Kapoor came together.

The period between 1978 till 1983 was quite productive for Tina Munim and she got good films in those years and some of them were quite successful films on box office. Starting with the Navketan’s Des Pardes, she was seen as a very promising actress.

Rajesh Roshan gave the music in Aap Ke Deewane.

    Hi RK,

    This really is from far away. Apart from the very dim snatches, my overall memory of the movie when I watched it on a black and white Dyanora (or was it Weston?) set while growing up in Bhopal, is that it wasn’t a bad one. I remember the song towards the end where Jeetendra, as a guest or something, joins Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan on stage.

    Hum to
    Aapke deewane hain
    Bade mastane hain

    Another movie I enjoyed which had Rishi Kapoor and Jeetendra from the trio, was Badalte Rishtey.

    @Inca,
    Yes you are right, Jeetendra makes a friendly (because he has been friend of Rakesh Roshan:)) and Guest (he is like a guest in this song) appearance.
    I remember very well Badalte Rishte. But Aapke Deewane was more fun. BR’s premise of Kundli (Horoscope) etc was pulling the film down and Tina Munim was a better choice and fresh face for love stories having young and good looking hero like Rishi Kapoor than Reena Roy. Reena Roy was working with Sunil Dutt and Shatrughan Sinha also at that time.

    @Ashwin,
    Rishi Kapoor is the first young face of hindi cinema who could look authentic in love stories of youngesters. He is father of such films. Manmohan Desai made him wear half pant, like a school student in Naseeb and he looked authentic in his character. He was also establishing new definitions in commercial cinema in 70s along with Amitabh Bachchan.
    Apart from Rishi Kapoor, Khel Khel mein is one of the best acted films of Rakesh Roshan. Music ofcourse was a reason behind its success. And it was directed by Ravi Tandan, father of Ravina Tandan.
    First half till Rakesh Roshan is alive was quite good.

    @Ashwin,

    McMohan is Mama (Maternal Uncle) of Raveena Tandan.
    From Mama word Iam always reminded the scene in saudagar (Subhash Ghai wali), where Pallavi Joshi is walking/running on the road and a car stops and door is stopped and we see Amrish Puri, playing with his long hair and after a brief conversation he says,
    aja bachri aja,
    Mein Mama Kunal ka Mama.
    Junia Chauhan. What a way he had to make his roles memmorable.

    Ya comedy in first half of KKM was good. That Preeti Ganguli scene where she gets the letter Rishi Kapoor throws for Neetu Singh and if you recall Karan Johar’s KKHH’s college competition song sequence was there in KKM, where Rishi Kapoor is invited on stage and their playback scheme does not work and people laugh but later sings a good song. same was in KKHH, where Rani starts singing when SRK and Kajol cant sing.

    Posters are very important part of films. These were posters which used to pull us in cinema hall.
    That Poster of Mr Natwar Lal where Amitabh Bachchan is pulled by ropes from all sides was enough to generate the curiosity to watch the film. Kalia’s poster. Jaani Dushaman’s poster where Sanjeev Kumar’s ghost face is there on top of the faces of many actors.
    Sholay’s poster where so many actors were present.
    Posters are very good material for a wonderful post.
    Ashwin, you like posters, please make a post on them. It will be a hit post. A super hit post.

    RK,

    The Rishi-Jeetu-Rakesh friendship resurfaced in Khudgarz which Rakesh Roshan directed and Jeetendra acted in, with Rishi kapoor making an appearance in a song in the beginning.

    And Khel Khel Mein was quite a good, taut college thriller. Iftikhar’s revelation was one of the best, rivalling that of Ashok Kumar in Jewel Thief.

    @Inca,
    Overall KKM was a good and entertaining film. Rishi Kapoor as usual was a natural charmer but it was character of Rakesh Roshan, though it had some grey shades, that was additional attraction. His characters presence and abesence both were impressive.
    More some day in post.
    But One thing I must say that like Raj Khosla’s films, where camera always shows one person and makes him/her suspicious but who is never the real or accomplice person and audience may always know that camera is only making it confusing, Ravi Tandan also followed that path.
    Somehow I was able to know that DK was not the villain.

    RK,

    The title song of Aapke Deewane can be considered as one of the shortest songs of all times.. The lyricst just penned 8 words for the song..

    Hum to aapke Deewane Hain
    Bade Mastaane Hain.. aa haa o ho..

    and thats it..

    and the same set of words keeps looping in the entire song.. no stanzas or additional words in the lyrics…

    The song (actually a dance contest) between Jeetu, Rishi & Rakesh (saw him dance for the first time) is very funny. I always considered Jeetu to be one of the the most ridiculous dancers, then I saw Rakesh Roshan, man what fun.
    Reminds me of Karan Razdan as a disco star in DISCO DANCER. Cant digest it!!!!
