Absolute power creates OSO
King Khan said in an interview to Taran Adarsh that it is a belief in his office, among his staff and himself ‘ki agar SRK ke saath kaam kiya aur film ne paise nahi banaye toh kya kaam kiya.’ It’s a great spirit and I have huge respect, admiration and an unmitigated jealousy for what the man has achieved in the land of a billion dreams.
However, when he hands the reigns of such power to a storyteller with absolutely no respect for the medium, or her audience and says, ‘I’ll give you myself, a 6-pack, a couple of score crores , the best technicians in the business’ and that’s all that the director in effect gives back to an audience, I feel it was the absolute power, arrogance and audacity of these people that created an Om Shanti Om - with no respect for a film-loving, star-worshiping audience. It’s as much our fault, our cock-sucking populist demand that supplied an OSO to us. We brought it upon ourselves.
I hadn’t planned on writing this post, I avoided it stubbornly for the last 2 days after having voluntarily put myself through that 2 hour and 45 minutes of mindlessness and a damage of a few hundred bucks, but I’m here now, and I’m going to make this worthwhile for myself, if not anyone else.
Most people I know are loving OSO, including very close friends whose judgment on other things I have deep respect for. But when they say I loved OSO because it entertained, I feel we have derogated ourselves to a position where these people in power throw pieces of carcass from their high-towered castles and we lap it up, and sing their praises. It’s not plain disgusting, it is self-annihilating, but we go on loving every minute of it.
I have nothing against commercial cinema, I have nothing against ‘entertaining’ films making money, I am not an art-house purist who only wants films that are pushing the boundaries of the medium. But I shall not take an ill-conceived, unbaked piece of filth and devour it because it came from the kitchen of those that I put in that position.
OSO is testimony to how a filmmaker and producer can take their audience for granted. We’ll put SRK, with his 6-pack, with a stunning lady clad in an addendum to a bra for most of the second half, a nonsensical screenplay and an even more ridiculous script on film and get away with it! No… they can’t, they shouldn’t.
Am not saying we must boycott these films because they are commercial, or because they are made purely with a profit motive and nothing more. Every film has to make a profit for the team behind it to survive and I’m completely for a profit making venture. But while you keep an eye on profits, don’t turn a blind eye to the quality of the product you’re putting out into the market.
We as a consumer nation evolved in the manufacturing and services sector. We opened our gates to international competition and said we’ll play you in our field. Those who didn’t stand up to the test were wiped out, those who got better survived; but most importantly, the consumer ‘moved on’ to a better quality standard. The supply curve readjusted to a new qualitative demand curve, and I believe we need to push the demand curve upwards on films.
It will take time, but I’m hoping we get there before we subject ourselves to worldwide ridicule as a ’song and dance’ filmmaking
nation. I realise we offer that better than anyone else in the world, but must we remain as such, and never move up the value chain?
Our IT industry made and probably makes a bulk of its revenue in providing low cost, labour based services to international clients.
But once the pioneers in the industry stuffed their revenue base, they realised they need to work their way higher in to the value chain.
I can’t say if in films, as an industry, the pioneers have made their money as yet. I have a feeling we’re good, but I could be wrong. My only point is, the revenue pioneers needs to push the cause of cinema as well while stuffing their bottomlines - if that cause is left to the alternate wing to provide, then we’re fighting a terribly tilted, losing battle. There is no way the Sudhir Mishras and Anurag Kashyaps can do what the YRF/ UTV / Red Chillies can, given their revenue bases and industry control.
Lastly, but most importantly, the consumer in us has to wake up and say, ‘I’m not taking shit anymore. It could come from the biggest star of the industry, but if its below quality, it will burn in hell and so will the maker for having not put in enough effort.’
I don’t wish to grudge SRK’s success, I love him offscreen when he is not acting. I love Farah Khan’s work in choreography, hell I even liked bits and pieces of Main Hoon Na… but an effort like OSO needs to be rebuked (in my personal opinion). Go do your homework first. Give me a story, give me a good film, and I am all yours to be entertained.
A 6-pack ab is poster material, it doesn’t warrant a 40 crore film. (I don’t know if the film cost 40crores or more or less, it’s largely
irrelevant)
Absolute power has corrupted… someone has to clean up the system. We can start by rejecting filth. The supply curve will shift.

Moan Shanti Moan ——-
I like Farah khans attitude and sense of humor but not her aspirations. And this specifically applies to her latest offering to us.
Om shanti om had everything going for it, a mammoth budget, a quite interesting story and treatment idea, the hottest model as its heroine, access to all the biggest stars of the industry, a baap of all the item numbers andwell Shahrukh khan but what it didnt have was someone with a stick to hit the bums of the makers each time they would get carried away.
Getting carried away is the easiest thing to do when you write or make a film. There are several films, which suffer from this problem and for a writer and director its necessary that he/she knows where to draw the line.
But lets make one thing clear. Om shanti Om is not bad. It has its moments.
Om shanti Om is a tribute to Manmohan Desai, Karz, 70s cinema and all the clichs bollywood has anything to do with. Which means having our own Grindhouse. Great idea. But in this tribute thingy the plot, which in itself sounds so cool, has been treated like a stepson. Something which is there, just as a reason to allow them to call their spoof, a film. In this sense, at least, main hoon na was intelligent. It paid tribute to sholay and other films without taking its plot for granted and lacing the tribute factor in screenplay in such a way that it became the very part and heart of the narrative.
—-Spoilers ahead—- May leave next 2 paragraphs —–
First half throws a lot of 70s joke. Some of them are hilarious (dreamy girl sequence, quick gun murugun, main agar kahoon song, the fire in the studio scene- well thats not meant to be funny but powerful. It is), some of them are too desperate and inconsequential (tribute to mother India scene, kirron khers intro scene, Oms speech he prepares for the award, jag soon soona song which, by the way is too sudden. It neither makes you cry nor makes you feel for the character, you just cringe). The styling is straight out of MTVs perception of 70s which is a little irritating at times. Infact the sense of humor too is too MTVish. Its like an extended spoof from that channel. Or may be it was a tribute to Cyrus brocha too, who knows?
Second half lacks the required build up. When Om reaches the studio where he died. Nothing happens. Its so aweless. Even when its established that he is reincarnated has no dhamaka. It just happens. Sandys entry has no build up and is such a no show and so obviously predictable, the scene where Om explains her the motive behind the film he want her to do, when he re- unites with his family, or when he remembers his past all these scenes could be and should have been powerful and were quite important for the plot too but ironically these are the very scenes which have been treated extremely half heartedly and are the weakest of all. But instead what we do get is one Oodi baba mohabbat man scene, which is one of the worst trying to be funny scenes of the millennium. 21- 22 stars song (come on aftab and clan, cant be called stars) and some other gags which are considerably funny thanks to Bindu, Kirron kher and Akshay kumar.
— Spoilers end—
Farahs priorities are straight. She wants a spoof but then dont we have enough gags and spoofs of that sort on TV and Filmfare award functions? Most of the meant to be hilarious scenes are hilarious but they are good only as stand alones. After watching the film it feels like some really nice set pieces hanging in the air with no particular string giving them any direction or definition.
So much of time is wasted in paying tribute to the era gone by without caring about their negligible role in taking the story forward.
Things happen so slowly at times and moves so aimlessly that you wonder if it is just supposed to be a practical joke or anything more than that.
Right now, I think, it will find a huge audience base, which is really great for any film these days, but if the plot and spoofing was married rather seamlessly then may be it could increase its audience further and that would have been quite a cool and smart decision. But then somewhere it also gives us a hint that it never aspires to be that, or to be a little more intelligent. But if it was, I think, it would have better.
I dont know if its a lack of aspiration or simply a bad but safe choice, and I dont think Manmohan Desai would have made this choice either.

Karthik,
You sound frustrated and jealous. I think your article is a “poor cousin” of anurag kashyap’s style of writing.
Kartik
Good Morning!
Kartik
Its good to see you wake up & realize all the shit you been eating for so long. It stinks eh!
http://ia.rediff.com/movies/2007/nov/12us.htm
************
Last Film - Inside Deep Throat(7/10)
I guess the shit smells very rich(if I may say so)?
@ Dhiren - I’d much rather be a poor cousin of Anurag than a rich cousin of Farah.
One point I missed out to include in my oversight was the fact that SRK may just be our reply to George Clooney, as while he does his herogiri on one side, he also has the balls to do an Asoka or a Paheli. It’s just sad to see him put out a film which doesn’t even stink (in your words), RICH ENOUGH!
Very true Kartick…I feel with the advent of production houses and corporatisation of “bollywood”..its high time these guys should incorporate “corporate social responsibilty ” wherein a cinegoer is a customer and if he fails to like the movie..he should get his money back.
Now the point is that anybody would claim he or she dint like the movie.
Its not that easy..the cinegoer has to undergo instant truth analyser test to verify his/her dislike for the movie.:d
“Right now, I think, it will find a huge audience base, which is really great for any film these days, but if the plot and spoofing was married rather seamlessly then may be it could increase its audience further and that would have been quite a cool and smart decision.”
How much wide audience are you talking here buddy ! ..the film has already grossed 17 million dollars worldwide over the weekend . almost anyone who wanted to see it would have seen it already atleast once ! ..
i dont understand people come here and say that they found all the bollywood gags and jokes funny and hilarious , but they still complain about the “plot” , this was never a plot driven movie !! plot is incidental to all the jokes and “jamboree” . i dont think the makers tried very hard to put in a cohesive plot then why look for it !, the goal was to entertain from get -go , at which they have suceeded . Havent seen so much entertainment packed in to a single movie in a very long time .. not a soul budged in the theatre till farah khan made her entry in the end credits !
i find this quite interesting…..then i guess anybody can start off with a decent book of jokes and shoot the jokes one after the other and that should be great movie…..that would be the best way to entertain from the word go….

chill kartick, you want a generation raised on junk food to go ga-ga over salads. junk food tastes good. and evolution takes time.
I agree with Adesh. The 2nd half was very weak. Suddenly the hero gets headaches, suddenly he feels a link and a minute later he is all refreshed since he knows all (but that he does not tell us of course!).. cut to melodramtic scene of mother in bed with son finally home.. I agree.. Farah should have done a better job with the second half.
The first half if analysed is a joint of various 70 spoofs with the story as a sort of glue.
But even after this, you enjoy the movie. Because of the spoof and jokes. And the various cameos in the 2nd half. Maybe if there was a stronger story drive which caught the viewer’s attention. A lot of ppl did complain that the movie was now boring. What is engrossing is the viewers attempt to understand if this is a normal hero-heroine story.. which it isnt of course. Its a SRK story all the way.
I think JWM made better entertainment and was a bit more engrossing. In OSO, before you know it, you have finished the movie.. its almost like a whirlwind that hits you and floats away.
Main Hoon Na was engrossin, even though there were some cliched scenes in there as well.. Hate the Zayed Khan - Amrita Arora- I hate my father scene.. bah!
We talk about cinema being hopeless and giving us double meaning jokes and being vulgar - whereas Farah Khan goes and makes exactly that kind of movie and calls it a masala movie.. well well! If this isnt packaging the right way, what is?
But, I would still watch OSO for the first half, because no movie gives u cleaner moments in recent times this one. And a laugh is always good.
Well said Kartick!
“Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” - Lord Acton
“Arrogance on the part of the meritorious is even more offensive to us than the arrogance of those without merit: for merit itself is offensive.” - Nietzsche
Karthik, common lets get logical here.
I am confused , are you bashing OSO thinking that its a bad movie or because its not your taste. I am a guy who is fan of BLACK-FRIDAY and also a fan of OM-SHANTI-OM, in fact i am going to see it again tomorrow; yes again.
Movie is all about entertainment. Honestly i cant watch BLACK-FRIDAY kind of movie through out the year, i do need OM-SHANTI-OM kind of movie just to chill out and enjoy with my friends.
And i disagree with the fact that audience are just mobbing the OSO for stars and opulence. Audience have definatly matured in time, they straightaway rejected Joom-barar-Joom, umaro-jaan etc, which had all the contemporary boolwood formula to be a blockbuster.
Well if you agree with the thought that there is no problem in making a light hearted movie like OSO, now we can discuss what went wrong in OSO. I personally feel that OSO is not perfect, its an attempt for doing a movie filled with gag’s and giving it bollywood touch, even i am not 100% satisfied with it. But that is not the reason to hate it, despite of its loophole the movie enter tines ( which was the sole purpose of the movie). in fact i would prefer OSO’s comedy against david-dhavan’s. OSO has freshness in comedy and and new attempt and some good technical visuals.
You know i watched the movie “Shindler’s list” last day, and i am deeply moved by it, i was silent for 3 hour just think about the pain jews might have went through and appreciating the movie it self . Tomorrow i am going to see OSO again with 8 of my friends, and i am going to wave my hands in air when the star studded song ” all cool boys put your hands in the air and say OSO ” plays on screen.
You think i am crazy don’t you ????
GAPPU GAVE A FITTING REPLY TO JIBBER-JABBER OF KARTICK….OSO DOESNT NEED CRITICAL VIEWS OF KARTICK…I SAW NO-SMOKING TWICE AND OSO THRICE…YOU GOTTA BE BROAD-MINDED TO ACCEPT GOOD FILMS,THEY MIGHT BE EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA OR MERE SPOOFS OR GAGS….BUT THE POINT IS OSO ROCKS…NO HARD FEELINGS
Do you guys seriously think that Farah and Shahrukh aimed for anything as radical as a story!!!…they wanted to do a comedy with many spoof samples to keep the viewer glued…there are many faults..but they were focused on the irreverence..the no hang up entertainment..variety show..vaudeville kinds..they succeeded..that is not cinema per se..only a form of entertainment..saw the “Return to Khiladi” bit??..that says it all..they just converted that short into a full blown movie!!!!!!!!!!!
morph you’re right people who wanted to see it have already seen it atleast once. but there is a thing called repeat value and well intelligent movie making (in terms of execution and not marketing and packaging).
Intelligent movie making doesnt necessarily mean good box office collection but it means respect and may be a cult status too. And when I saw Om shanti Om I could see that it could be what its synopsis or the basic idea promises but then it fails, you know why? because its nothing but just lazy film making/writing because time hasnt been spent on incorporating the tribute and gag part with the narrative or plot of the film. Its like laughter challenge gags one after another without any larger aim, destination or structure.
A film doesnt have to be plot driven and its the choice of the makers to make it the way they see it but one has to strike the right balance between the plot and other things. If the main highlight of your film is not plot then keep it simple and let other things take over- the way it happened in Kill bill (a hopelessly simple story but lot of action and style- so it works, it strikes the right balance) but with OSO the plot in itself is not that simple, its emotionally heavy and there are lot of character arcs waiting to be explored, the questions which are never answered because all the time is spent on gags. And Gags are basically what they are selling. If you add one thing then you have take out something also. you cant have both. And if you want to then a lot of time and energy has to be put in writing the film which i dont think is the case with OSO.
Again I am saying that I dont think OSO is bad because it does entertain in parts but all I am saying is that togther these gags donot make sense and are not cohesive or intelligent. they are beautiful set pieces but they are not held together well. Yes it is a hit but films are not about making money alone its also about something else, i hope you know what I mean.
And the way I see OSO, I find it a fairly good opportunity which got wasted because of lack of aspiration of the makers. they wanted a hit. they got it. they didnt want an intelligent film. its not. It doesn’t aspire to be what I feel could make it as fantastic and as cult as golmal or andaz apna apna. Its all about choices and I just dont happen to like their choices as much you do. Its as simple as that.
There are good books and then there are bad books. OSO is like a bad book. But, a bad book has a hero, say a Harry Potter. SRK is the Harry Potter of Book 7. The book would always sell whether the plot/book is good or bad. Unfortunate? Yes, sure is. But, it is the gratuity that the author earns for her previous work… her six books. (This is only an example. I have not read the last book yet, but, I hope you get the point)
I understand your feelings about OSO. One need not be a rocket scientist to understand that it is a bad film. BUT…
I quote you here…
“before we subject ourselves to worldwide ridicule as a ’song and dance’ filmmaking nation.”
What seems ridiculous to you and me is what people come to see. Do you think Lagaan made it to the Oscars because it was a GOOD film? Sure it was a brilliant film, but, the song and dance sequence had a role (a major one) to get it to the final four. WHen I see Sanjay Dutt move his butt to Lage Raho Munnabhai, I laugh and enjoy.
Another quote of your’s..
“Lastly, but most importantly, the consumer in us has to wake up and say, ‘I’m not taking shit anymore.”
I like your attitude. But, you are underestimating the audience. In your own words, I urge you to please not to insult the intelligence of the masses. The audience is smart. Whether or not movies like laga chunari mein daag or Jhoom barabar made money is another story, but, they were scorned by the average audience (my mom included!). Now, why did they come to watch an OSO? The movie was a “HIT” before it was released. And you know why? Only because people had made up their minds before the film was released that they are going to enjoy this one (on the basis of the promos and the marketing alone)
The average film goer is smart. Very smart. He may not watch the movie with a notepad so he could write a review on his blog at the end of the day. He is there to enjoy himself. And if SRK is the reason for him to come watch the film, I do not disrespect him or see him in lesser light.
BTW, I paid those 100 bucks just to watch those film stars in one song on that big screen. There were people who paid for the six packs as well. Now, if you will tell me to !@#$ off, I would understand. I really would because your intensions are noble. And it is people like you who balance it out when the crowd is going bollocks on movies such as OSO with a snowball effect. But, please understand and respect their reasons for it.
Things are changing and for the good. THey said that Indian cinema was at its nadir in the 1970s because almost all movies were a hit if it had Bachchan saab in it. People flocked the theatres to see him. He carried the industry back then. Today, no one does. Phir Bhee Dil hain hindustani and paheli will still flop today. The multiplex audience is smarter only because today he has a better choice…
Cinema and celluloid or whatever it is called is about entertainment. I haven’t seen Bicycle thieves, but, if it doesn’t entertain me, it may not mean that is a bad film, but, what are you going to do with a GOOD film that doesn’t entertain. Never ever say that the audience was not ready for it. Its only that you were ahead of your times and that you got the timing wrong (Read: andaz apna apna).
But, I would love say, Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’. But, I have my reasons. It is about entertainment and reasons…
Gappu / Vivek - This was not my CRITICAL opinion of the film. It was a personal vent. I find this analogical to Infosys relegating themselves to doing ‘typing’ work for international clients. Nahi fit hota hai na dimag mein? Why - becasue they are better than that. SRK - Farah did a Main hoon na, whcih was an entertainer, everyone loved it alike AND the film made money. Great. No probs.
The film is a tribute to the 70s and Manmohan Desai apparently. Manmohan Desai’s films never had you thinking in the second half ki kya chutya bana rahe hain mereko. You were entertained from the word go to the last frame - even when you knew every dialogue that was coming, every movement of the story - you still enjoyed watching Bachchan saab and Vinod Khanna and whoever else do their bit… TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT. No questions.
But this was not entertainment. This was an EXCUSE for not having worked on a script. This was a despicable attempt under the facade of a tribute. That’s my complaint. That’s all.
Hrishida made entertaining films, didn’t he? I don’t hear anyone complaining about those. Hell, most of us who grew up in the 70’s / 80’s / 90’s loved Manmohan Desai films as well… but yeh nahi chalega baap!
Vinay - I’m not hoping for an overnight change; but hoping that the change does set in sometime soon.
Indraneel - sure there were so genuinely funny moments, but 5 moments do not serve as material for a script na yaar. There had to be some sense of coherence in the script? Nahi kya? Matlab this was the kind of stuff that we did in college, musical skits - total tp types. But when they put X crores into that project and put it out to the WORLD as an audience, I was expecting better quality standards, that’s all. Podar College (Mumbai) mein har saal musical skit hota hai… if you’re looking for FUN - wahan se behtar item giri maine aaj tak kahin nahi dekha and I love it wholeheartedly (not ONLY because I am from Podar)
well put..Kartick..we all get the point..only that they have gone and done it..marketed it profusely..wohi podar ka panga in 2.5 hrs (maybe worse)..and gotten away with the millions..US mein dekh yaar..Lions of lambs is a flop and Bee Movie is a hit..again flip side American Gangster is a hit..kya bologe??
Movie making is not just about making it..it consists of presentation, marketing, timing and distribution (you can take any number of good movies who have failed with this and could not garner viewership)
OSO has done all this effectively yaar..Shahrukh and Farah know their business..ENTERTAINMENT..Cinema..well..knock another door..Adoor G has made Four Women..woh jaake dekho or Dosar by Rituporno..to each his own..free country, kya!
Lets accept that we are a taporified country!
Agreed!
Karthick,
Totally agree with u. OSO was “Dard-hei-mujjko”.
The first time Farah Khan held the megaphone for Main Hoon Na, she had made a statement to defend her films quality. Two years later when she came up with Om Shanti Om, she still has the same words
Kartick…your analogy of infosys= Srk/farah is kind of misplaced. You mean to say you expected better out of SRK/Farah rather than a pedestrian movie (read:typist work.)
Ill give you a different analogy. I think Infosys is best at providing service .but what has the organisation done in the field of product developement?? Same with the IITs.. with so many years of existence..not even one mentionable R & D work in India. Being the best can amount to complacency with regard to excellence. It leads to stagnation. .The big brands like SRK, INfy, IIT are does not gurrantee responsibility to fulfill your expectations.
Lets put things in perspective: (basically I am trying to make a fool out of myself but anyways… )
Entertainment: Webster defines it as: an activity that is diverting and that holds the attention.
‘Holding attention’ now that on a personal level defines what kind of person you are. So if a mindless film made with complete joy of indifference appeals to masses… its a pity. But so is everything else around.
Audience: An audience is a group of people who participate in an experience or encounter a work of art, literature, theatre, music or academics in any medium. Audience members participate in different ways in different kinds of art; some events invite overt audience participation and others allowing only modest clapping and criticism and reception.
So the word is ‘participate’. So just remember even by just watching a movie you participate.
Films: Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them.
Even irrelevant… out and out mindless movies… should have some purpose… should achieve or at least strive… for something that hasn’t been achieved before… because irrelevancy is just a genre… a medium… cinema is still about telling a story never told before or telling the same story in a different way… at the core… getting across an idea… however small it may be… I am not saying it has to preach… the day people (espply film makers) start believing that a film has no purpose… but to serve the shallowness that the word ‘Entertainment’ has come to become…I would say the porn industry is more honest about its profession than Bollywood…
Vimal - thanks for the supporting argument.
Sourav - I cannot counter your point on R&D and product development at Infosys or IIT because I don’t have hard facts there. So I will take your point and let it go at that.
Alok - that was some effort behind the comment. I respect the point of view, and second you when you say the porn industry might, by default become more honest than mainstream cinema.
EVERYONE - my name is ‘Kartick’. Krupaya note karein!
Kartick
[...] Kartick Sitaraman, Passion for Cinema Rating: Thumbs down …OSO is testimony to how a filmmaker and producer can take their audience for granted…. See full review [...]
Kartick, I totally understand your frustration. The movie is crap. Even the funniest scene was copied from some other stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbWIG586poE
OSO is just shameful.
hay thanks for this video.:o
Kya baat kar raha hai gappu - I thought you’d know where that Return of Khiladi idea came from. But even though they’ve LIFTED the video, I quite liked what they did with the idea.
Indians bollywood fans are like the little kids lured by corporate mascots like Ronald McDonald because they are told its fun and entertaining. But they are worse; they are incapable of opening their minds to other forms of entertainment. The notion that the audience is intelligent is missing the point which is they have to share equal blame for the state of Indian cinema.
Indian NRI bollywood fan is the dumbest of
kartick…agree with u. but i enjoyed OSO also. its not good cinema by any standard. dont know if u can call it cinema also. Its 2hours of MTV gags on big screen with some of the biggest stars. but then it made me laugh n had a good time. n farah hav always admitted that its her cinema, this is d cinema that she understand n she will make these kind of films. dont c anything wrong in it. let everyone hav their kind of cinema. MTV also made a film called Ghoom (spoof on dhoom) recently. and ig we r talking about a film, then m waiting desprtly for KKC.
@Travis - man, u really DO speak like Travis Bickle. I’d like to see you do your version of, ‘you talking to me?’… i share your opinion and the energy.
@Phoenixu - every film will find its audience, no doubt. but the point i was trying to make was, we, as an audience need to ensure that the quality of ENTERTAINING cinema is elevated. They will keep giving us crap if we keep accepting it. That’s all.
Enough said about this. Let’s move on.
Kopps??? did anyone say?
I think in all this Manmohan Desai has been raised to a level that sounds ridiculous. For instance: “Manmohan Desai
@Suparna
and that has been done already . Scary movie , hot shots , epic movie , date movie etc . one joke after another right through the movies . some work , some dont .
I saw the movie yesterday evening (bcos my wife, like most other females in India, didn’t want to miss this SRK flick). After having seen “Chak De” and supported by the comments “OSO is not bad movie either” I turned into the theatre optimistically. The multiplex theatre was more then half empty and at the end of the movie I was eager to get out of it.
The movie is only skin deep and it was like seeing a cine awards function. Rather a cine award function with a reincarnation skit. I think this movie cheated us en masse, thanks to massive 1000 print launch and thanks to relative edge over Saawanriya. And worst of all, many of us didn’t even realize getting cheated.
Why I think people latched on to this movie was:
* A very well timed and well executed marketing strategy which made people look forward to this movie and eventually made them pour into the theatres
* A very strong industry brand (SRK/FK and supportive camps) plus the accumulated brands of all the film personalities who did cameo in this film
* Guys wanting to see the new chick and females wanting to see the much hyped SRK torso
* A good mood created since the music launch of its catchy music (though I hated “Dard-e-Disco” and most of other songs even more after seeing the movie)
* The festive and holiday period of the movie launch
As I could see later that watching OSO had sort of become status symbol. If you have not yet watched it, you are a LS (low style) guy/gal.
Any way as I would sum: this movie took a very forward step in collecting the box office revenues but took a very backward step in terms of achiveing creativity, class and excellence.
