Actor or Director: Part 1
Its been quite sometime, since i have written something on here, more so for me being lazy. But, i have been doing a lot of You-tube’ing and have found quite a few gems out there…for instance i was watching a bit of Pancham, a bit of Koffee With Karan episode of the Director’s special and also with Farhan Akhtar…these are the things these days which are keeping me in good spirits…
When i was watching the episode of the Director’s special of KWK…one thing that i did recollect was..how much i have changed…my perspective as a film viewer..no longer do i crave to listen or see what the actor has to say about the movie..no longer do i crave to see the behind the scenes..or “on location” bytes, which fortunately or unfortunately i was so eager to watch/listen when i was growing up as a kid…their could be quite a few reasons for it…let me list a couple of them
1. Not much of “entertainment” news about 15 years ago: Well the only source of knowing whats happening in the movie world back then was one of those movie mag’s like Filmfare, Stardust, Movie, Cineglitz. They used to carry an occasional interview of a director speaking about his about to be released movie and tons and tons of Masala…and i used to love Masala..infact i still do. But then again, you only love things that you know of. One other way i would get to know about a movie would be through Cibaca Geet Maala…now this was the “only” show apart from Chitrahaar that i would never miss..the impeccable Ameen Sayani and the song getting “retired” after 25 weeks of play on the Maala..
Here comes the fascination of associating a movie with an actor rather than a director…i hardly remember caring for who the director was..or if i am not mistaken..the director’s name would occupy very little space on the program..it always was Sanjay Dutt, Shah Rukh Khan…for christ’s sake even Deepak Tijori( I am talking of a period when the song ” Maine Kal ek Sapna Dekha..Meri baahon Mein thi Rekha” from pehla Nasha..i guess)…and then it woulde “directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar” for 3-4 secomds. As a part of growing up, when things were not known to me..or when certain things are not out there, i would have never looked at a movie for who was directing it unless he happened to be a Raj Kapoor or a Subhash Ghai. I often wonder why was it…maybe because, 80’s had produced some of the worst movies in Bollywood and the publicist would rather market a movie for being a ” Deepak Tijori Movie” to an “Ashutosh Gowarikar movie”…who knows..infact for me Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was always an SRK movie untill about 6-7 months and 6-7 watching’s that soemone told me..ohh the director is the same guy who made ” Nukkad”..and then it was dyaam moment..and that was it..a moment..nothing more..
2. The arrival of Mamta Kulkarni and Choli Ke Peeche: God damn it..now i was not even allowed to sing Choli Ke Peeche kya at home..i was shunned at and everyone looked at me in a disgusting fashion when i sang Choli ke peeche kya during one of our antakshari bouts in summer holidays with grandparents and cousins and uncles and aunts…how could you…i would say..its just a song…prompt came the reply…you could have sung churaliya hain tumne jo dil ko…
I wanted to see Mamta Kulkarni, I wanted to see SRK, I loved Salman..and talking about movies all the time at home was considered to be as an ” Aawaara thing”…I remember how down upon my relatives would talk about a couple of my cousins who would watch a movie a Friday…but, invaribly in a sarcastic note they would ask them, how the movie was…maybe my relatives were seeing themselves 20 years ago in my cousins, but could’nt confront themselves or convinces themselves to think that watching movies was not like doing drugs. Growing a hairstyle like SRK wasnt like chedoeing girls on the bus stop. It was so damn hard to say i wanted to watch or talk about movies for ever. Invariable would get ” Poorein aata..sarkha kay picture picture?” ( Enough of pictures already)….and then i found the magic wand….The Directors…coming soon!!!

I evn had a tough time singing ‘Tu mile’ from Criminal. I was scared if my parents would come to know that I actually watched the whole song to hum it !!!
for me “The Actor” that got me into watching movies was Chiranjeevi and honestly untill I was like 10-12 I didn’t care for any other actors. as far as bollywood goes I always liked salman khan when i was young (Maine Pyar Kiya, HAHK, Saajan that era) then slowly I started to like Aamir Khan. now I dont care about actors any more its director and the story that drives me to movies.
OM i can totally understand with “Choli ke peeche” thing thats one of the fav song during antakshari sessions that i used to have during summer holidays.
Regarding Directors it has to be RGV that got me to watch his films and I didn’t care for who is acting in it and who gave music and stuff like that and I have watched most of his films and another director that had similar impact is K.Vishwanath…my parents used to take us to his every film and thats how I got to know more about him….
Its the new wave directors who have started projecting themselves in the media, that has made all the difference. Now the audiences are geting aware that it is the director more than the actor who shapes the movie. In the awful 60s and 70s, the script was no longer even written out, and actors like Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna just mouthed the dialogues that were being written right there on the sets. There was no quality control and any business man or moneyed guy could become a director overnight. This is still happening in some sections of the industry (see movies like Partner, or Apna sapna…)but I think that things are gradually becoming more professional. lets hope this trend continues.
@ Cool…haha that was funny…by the time Tu Mile came up, i was a bit grown up..so did know which songs to sing and which not..
@ Varun… For me, maybe coz of the friends i was having..i never got to watch many chiru movies..i did use to hear about them every now and then…but, never got attracted. Plus, hero worship = awaara…and god Chiru was such a mass back in those days…
For some reason i used to like Mithun da too..just when Dance Dance released and so did Commando..hehe
Nevertheless, it has to be SRK for me..SRK mere bhai..
Directors…hmm..wait for part 2..i will eleborate it their
Sevian…not sure about 60’s and 70’s, but we do hear..how the story was written on the sets..and how Rajesh Khanna was jotting between 2-3 sets…one interesting anecdote..if i am not mistaken was wen Kaka was shooting for a Hrishida’s film and he started saying some name of a woman..hrishda asked him..dude, who is she…kaka goess…ohh sorry, i was shotting at so and so..and the actress’s name at that shoot was blah blah..
Sevian yaar Partner was directed by David Dhawan maan…the guy with the most hits/super hits EVER in Hindi Film Industry..aise matt izzat nikalo yaar bechaarein david ki…
BTW a trivia…
What is the original name of David Dhawan?
does it not depend who has bigger name?
chak de india ll remain srk film…
munnabhai was sanjay dutt film
lage raho munna bhai was sanjay dutt nd raju hiranis film
khosla ka ghosla film is bigger than actors or directors… i still dont know who directed the film…
mangal pande was amirkhan film…
@ Krishn..yes you are right..it does depend on who is big..my point was..when i was younger..i didnt care about the director as not much was mentioned about the directors..which is gradually changing these days…i will be writing my part 2 soon..where i guess i will make it more clear…hehe wait for the sequel or the trilogy or 10th part..for the ending..lol!!
