Again a New Beginning……

A very good beginning… I am an amatuer blogger.
This is the beginning of a new chapter for me. One is always trying out new things in life and this is something that I am trying out for the first time.
I am not a regular blogger. I just have enough patience with my emails and looking up information that I want to read on the internet. Yes of course I try to keep in touch with my Yahoo group on my web site… not as much as I like to!!!
PFC was introduced to me by Anurag Kashyap when I met him at the IFFLA this April. I enjoyed reading it and wanted to be part of it…. so here I am.
WRITING is something that I admire in people. Sometime we have thoughts but to put them in words is not that easy. It has been always been a task to transform my thoughs into words, but I have decided that I have to start sometime and now is the time. When I asked Anurag to have a screenwriting training session for people like me who want to write a film, he simply said ‘fill 140 pages of a script that you want to make into a film, that is the only way one can learn to write.’
Hmmmm…. 140 PAGES!!!!!! Well I am trying to do exactly that for the last one month!!!
Screenwriting is a lonely job and needs a specialised skill. Imagination transformed into words that can convey the emotions that needs to be conveyed. Description is fine, but to say the right words at the right time….wow that is wonderful. Everytime I watch a film and hear a dialogue that remains with me even after the film, I admire the writer who wrote it. So many that come to our mind when we think of the most repeated lines from films.
I think at the moment I am full of admiration for screenplay writers as I am trying my best to write.
Chao… will get back after writing a few more scenes………!!!

Above all, keen to know how your understanding of cinema has changed from Bharathiraja to Balachander to Maniratnam to Kamalhassan to now your own cap as director!!
I must say I liked Mitr pretty much and waiting patiently for your film in Thamizh….

WOW!!
It only keeps getting better at PFC.
Welcome Revathy.

I cannot imagine that you will not be able to translate your caring, poignant, intelligent point of view into an equally wonderful and insightful screenplay! “Phir Milenge” dealt with AIDS and human relationships in such a touching way, and your piece “Parcel” in “Mumbai Cutting” also explored the feelings of a woman who has simply become a commodity for a few – so well, so simply… I know I won’t be alone in rushing to the movies when your screenplay, and film, will be complete. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I am 31, from hyderabad and one of your admirers. I hvae two daugthers, the younger one had an appended middle name at the last moment – guess what?? ya right – Revathy
Good to see you here, if I am not narissicstic in suggesting this, please click on this link and visit my blog to look at the picture of my younger daughter (ok, I have a talent for writing too – if you have the patience of course
) – the little girl at the top right corner is Revathy Manaswini – she smeared her mom’s lipstick (before you wonder if I am a child beating psychopath) – and perhaps felt this: Beautiful

Some words of advice from a professional called Phil Alden Robinson. He wrote(or co-wrote) All of Me, In the Mood, Field of Dreams, Sneakers and Freedom Song, but wishes he had written CHINATOWN.
“This is my writing Routine. I Follow it religiously, & I Highly Recommend it.
I do not get up early on the days I write as I don’t want to be groggy. In Fact, To prevent grogginess, I sleep as late as possible, then feed the dog, exercise(very good for clearing the head before writing), take a shower(good thinking can be done here), eat a healthy breakfast(very important to prepare you for writing), read the newspapers(sharpens your mind) make some phone calls and do all the assorted little things around the house that have piled up to them out of the way so they don’t give you an excuse later for not writing.
Now its time for lunch. I make it a point to go out to eat, having found that getting out of the house is an excellent way to clear your mind for writing. Lunch invariably leads to an errand or two, maybe a little shopping, sometimes even involving the purchase of items without which one can write, such as paper, a nice pencil, or a book that you may someday need for research.
When you get home there’s mail to answer and phone calls to return. all of which are very important to get out of the way so they don’t interrupt with your writing later. By late afternoon, you are faced with a dilemma: start writing now, only to have to interrupt it for dinner, thus losing valuable momentum and focus… or put it off until after dinner. I highly recommend you not start writing at this point. Most people are not at their peak in the late afternoon, and there’s nothing worse than getting a head of steam going only to cut it off prematurely. So nows a good time for catching up on magazines, one of which actually contain a nugget that inspires or informs your work.
After dinner you realize there’s a movie you’ve been putting off seeing, and let’s be honest here: how can we be so presumptuous as to write movies if we’re not seeing them? It is absolutely crucial that we learn from our peers, profit from their mistakes, and experience first-hand what the audience likes and dislikes.
Okay. The movie lets out at ten and home you go. Now, finally. there are no more distractions, all the possible procrastinations are gone, you’re primed and inspired to start writing.
But here’s the thing. If you start writing now, you’ll be up until 2 or 3 in the morning and thats going to screw up tomorrow something fierce, so I urge you to go to bed. The next morning be sure not to get up early , so you don’t want to be groggy on a day when you’re writing … and repeat all the above steps.
I do this for weeks – sometimes months- on end until I feel so guilty and fraudulent that I drop everything, turn off the phones, and do nothing but write from morning till night until I’m done.”

Welcome M’am,
“Description is fine, but to say the right words at the right time….wow that is wonderful.”
Now that makes me curious about the screenplay you are writing.
Jateen.

i’m glad that u r blogging as well..i really am…
i agree with what u’ve written about the situation a person is in at the time of screewriting or or it could be anything at all, not just screen-writting, it’s what Woolf felt it too — “a room of one’s own”…
i believe in the solitary confinement when it comes to writting, even though i get restless pretty often n my concentration flips everytime i try to focus..
take care and i hope u continue to share your insights with us through blogging..

Welcome to PFC!!! Huge fan of yours as are so many! Would love to hear your take on moving from an actress to a director and anything you would like to share!
I would love to know how you look at writing any ’story’ or 140 pages as you have called it!

Good to see a Blog with a tamil name in PFC. After Revathi there has not been a performing actress in Tamil cinema. (Nowadays most are expressionless glamour dolls). Expecting more movies from u as a director (i am a fan of movies by deepa mehta , mira nair , Suhasini)

It is a plesure having you in PFC.I have been a great admirer of you and Suhasini Maniratnam. I just loved your movies -Gayam, Prema and Phir Milenge.
I hope you direct more movies and try to act more often.
I liked your characterization in gayam.
I am looking forward to see you write your own perspective on Indian cinema.

Welcome Ma’am. Its heartening to see a lot of people entering PFC and these additions will make it way more interesting.
I am also glad to see more filmmakers and people from the guild entering PFC. Rather than have a mode of misrepresentation or glorification of ideas, it would be more beneficial to learn and share.
This was at one time a place to learn from the masters and hopefully it will regain that lost sheen. I am happy to see people who love the craft joining PFC.
Here is hoping we get to hear, learn a lot from Ms. Revathy and understand the finer nuances of films.

I’m glad someone noticed that gem I posted. That is exactly what I’m doing these days. And it was very nice to know that the best writers also go through such extreme lazyness.:)
That book had a very similar essay by Stephan Gaghan also.
I wish I could make a post about it instead of a comment.

For suggestions on writing..
First, keep a pen and paper ready at hand. Go back to any one of your past experiences. Recollect it vividly. Now try to visualize someone else in your place. It could be a role model for you, it could be a popular actor, politician…anyone..but it should be someone about whom you know quite a bit. As you visualize, Follow your thoughts without trying to consciously direct them in any way. You will find a gush of thoughts that you will want to pen down…

Hellooooo Revathy!
Been a fan of you since Mann Vasanai, though at 10 years old when it released, I couldnt have claimed to understand much about the movie or acting in general at that time. Suffice to say that you have been my favourite actress and star since then and even that would be a understatement. I would go so far as to say that for a period through my adolescence, you were even my ‘dream girl’ and may I confess that Suresh Menon broke my heart in 1986 or was it ‘88 :-). Before you are scared, let me emphasize that I have gotten over that crush now :-)
Anyways, welcome here and will keenly follow your blog here. I would love to hear, apart from your serious thoughts, brief recaps of your experiences in the tamil film industry, with the good and the bad together.
What I mean is , why would you act in duds like ‘Selvi’, the one where they picturised a duet on a dog and its pair. It would be interesting to know what went through your mind when shooting for duds like that :-). See, I am a big fan of yours – I have even watched ‘Selvi’ twice :-)
(BTW, would you know why and how the director thought of that colossal stupid picturisation in Selvi for what was essentially a brilliant song by Ilaiyaraja? (Ilamanadhu Pala kanavu))

also, many here have quoted the usual suspects like mouna raagam, gaayam, ankuram, mann vasanai, mitr etc,
I am sure there would be many like me but let me be the first to quickly recap a few films that made me absolutely adore you but wouldnt be known by many people:I doubt if even you remember these – I sort of hold my knowledge of these as a badge of my fandom for you :-)
Jnangalude Kochu Doctor(bad movie but what a performance from you when you were not even 20 years of age!), Selvi(you were absolutely gorgeous in this one – I saw this one twice just for you), Maragadha Veenai, Another telugu film which I saw in DD where you are torn between 2 or 3 men and end up destitute or something (horrible movie which i didnt understand why you accepted but cant remember the name – and yeah, I watched it through and through without a break just for you), a Kannada film where you played a mentally-challenged woman(brilliant performance), the telugu remake of mullum malarum with mohan babu(thought you would have done a fabulous job in the original which Shoba did – if only you had been around during the time but this one was telugu-ised and looked bad), another malayalam film where you are separated from your family as a child and end up a beggar, your second film (ponnu ooruku pudhusu? or was it mannukketha ponnu?), the dinesh baboo film which was shot in 48 hrs, Deiva Vakku(What chemistry you shared with Karthik! hope you can write about that!), Pagal Nilavu( this one is well known though. I remember reading your interview sometime that you didnt do glamour because you thought your personality or structure wasnt suited for it – this one movie can disprove that statement- you were gorgeous in a slightly glamorous role but yeah, at the same time, your USP is your non-glamorous image so yeah, no complaints).
Hmm…I guess I should edit your imdb page since most of these are missing in your imdb list.

oh my God Revathi mam,
is it really you. This is such a huge surprise for all your die heart fans.you are someone that i adore and love so much . when i was just a little girl watching your films i use to call you aunty and i still do. I just love all your films i think in your films you really live as your character. no one can forget the all the roles you portrayed in film. when the film Mouna Raagam was realsed i must of been a little gal only 3 or four at that time but when i saw that movie recently i just fell in love with the way you acted as the diya character and even thought Mani sir brought the story to life. love through and females eyes but you brought it alive with your acting as Diya character. you made the audience to relate with your feeling on screen to cry and laugh with you. what can i say you are such a brilliant actress and not only that you are an inspiration for the new line actresses. well you inspire me not only in acting but in many things such a making movies well directing them and also doing lot of social work. are you planning to direct more films the future? i watched both of the film you directed and they were both amazing. i am looking forward to your future projects as well. i was wondering what advise you have for aspiring directors? what do someone have to do in order to become a good director? well i have looked into some film school that have directing course and i also write story’s as well. i think i want to come and learn in film school in India since Indian cinema as inspired me to write and act and now i want to direct a film as well. well in the country i live in many young talents are making movies and since is my passion and my dream i want to make it come true as well. well i hope to hear from you soon ma’am. wish you best of luck in your future project hope to see you on big screen. Take care

Hope and trust you are keeping fine.
And my best wishes to you and on the burgeoning writer inside you!
How is Ms Lakshmi? Is she still at San Jose? Kindly give my best regards to her.

Dear Revathy,
I acknowledge this blog is for admiring cinema and its beauty. This is a personal note to you – who I consider a strong person of principled thinking and actions. Not your movies alone but your off-screen actions.
I am a NRI for the last 20 years. Like many bloggers here – my memories are the Mouna Ragams and Punnagai Mannans. Having said that on a serious note – have noticed very dishearting trend in India. Women and abuses against them. It is not new but the nature of crimes have alarmingly increased. Blogs as one attached here are not painting a good picture for India.

With all these improvements in India and our lifestyle the crimes against women have stayed steadily on the increasing path.
Very sad to note this and want to do something. What awareness campaigns and organizations are you involved with. I can always pick one but what to make sure it is doing the right things. So disheartened to see that we are spiralling into this chaotic socio-economic structure.
Where are our prominent figures and what are they effectively doing?
