Am I a funny guy or what?

Am I a funny guy or what?
My most unsettling experience after the release of Khosla ka Ghosla was seeing the audience laugh.
They were laughing at places where Jaideep and I had never intended them to laugh. They were not laughing at the places where we were expecting them to get the bends guffawing. Then they came out sniggering, smiling, giggling – and if it hadn’t been for the satisfied sigh that we could hear from everyone of them – we would have been really puzzled.
You see, I never made KKG as a comedy. I made it as the story it was, and life as I know it – funny, sad, bitter, sweet, quiet, noisy, but never predictable. That is life, isn’t it?
The real comedy came later, after KKG took off. Not a month would go by when I wouldn’t get a call from a producer that went something like this.
Hello, Dibankar?
Dibakar. Yes?
I’m so and so.
Hello sir. How are you?
Fundoo film you’ve made yaar. So when are we doing something together?
You liked it?
Actually I didn’t see it, but collections wise rocking yaar. So Dibankar…
Dibakar sir…
Actually… I have this romantic comedy, just up your street, I told my partners that you are the guy for it. It is so funny so funny what do I tell you. See we’ve signed so and so, the script is rocking, have you seen FUNNY GUY? (Actually one or the other Hollywood comedy that had made teenagers consume more potato chips than the national consumption average of some countries)
No.
See it. Fundoo. Rocking. The script is inspired on that. Good inspiration. We can adapt it the way you want. Your sensibilities – youth appeal, full on comedy, very modern like haan? Different types like. But rocking comedy haan? When do we meet?
Sir, I have a script about a thief who wants to be famous. I would like to make it. Are you interested?
What kind of thief. Funny? Glamorous? Full on style and comedy no? Jamaica ja sakta hai beach pe… fun and frolic?
J… Jamaica?
Anywhere yaar. We can talk about it. But script is funny no? Humour no? Totally your sensibilities, we have no problems, we can discuss Dibankar no problem.
Dibakar sir…
That’s how it went, with variations to the main theme.
I distinctly remember the emotions that went into the making of KKG were of nostalgia, bittersweet humour and anger.
Funny guy?
Now the trials of Oye Lucky are on. I sit at the back, and my heart skips a beat when I hear the whole audience whoop in mirth, or giggle, or shake in silent laughter. They really laugh. My consolation is that at some places they go totally quiet and I can hear the sighs (my personal hit meter), and as the film ends I have seen some of them take of their glasses of and wipe their eyes. Tears of mirth I guess.
I hear a festival returned my film because they were not big on comedy. What do I do now? Is my fate as a funny guy sealed forever? Irrespective of how much anger, satire and pain I have put into Oye Lucky, I guess the innate humour of the characters being themselves, behaving in character, doing strange things – it’s a bizarre bunch of people in the film – will make people really laugh. But I do hope they see through the laughter. I really hope so.
As they did on KKG. The normal people. The people who don’t know film genres, film theory, or haven’t read the Heroe’s Journey or are not experts at what will do well and what won’t.
Hello Dibakar?
Hi auntie.
Beta I saw your film. Why are they calling it a comedy? It’s such a serious film?
You didn’t find it funny?
Of course beta. My son to laughed and laughed. But this has happened to us beta. This is … er… so… so… serious, real… I mean it really happened to us.
Another one..
Heyyyy I saw your film!
So? What do you think?
Um… you know I laughed and laughed and laughed? Then I came out and called my dad in Washington.
Or
Oye. Tere picture ki DVD bakwaas hai yaar.
Kyon?
Abe apne bete ke saath har do teen hafte ke baad dekhta hun yaar. Just to make a memory. Dus bari chalai fir phunk gayi bhaincho.
Thank god for them. Maybe they’ll see through the laughter again.

Welcome To the blogging world Dibakar! “Oye teri picture ki DVD bakwaas hain…”
All the best for Oye Lucky!
To me, KKG was not a comedy,.
When I was watching this film with friend of mine,
Film related to him, regarding this Land & Plot issues,
And he was telling me how true filmmaker is,.captured his frustration very well,
But one can watch this movie, as funny affair though
A very warm Welcome Dibakar and best of luck for OLLO..
KKG for me was more than a comedy and had the best portrayal of middle class family in recent times …
Maybe they’ll see through the laughter again…
They will, they will….all the best…cheers!!!
Dibakar.. hw come u so clued on to the punjabi, delhi north indian sensibilities..ur movies may not be comedies but the characters u create are so phunny and “not so cosmopoliton”..its like a black guy in an american teen comedy.. u put a sardar/panju in a movie and ppl will laugh just because of the accent..btw is the lyricist amitosh the same guy who plays the lead in swanand kirkire’s Aao saathi sapna dekhe? Fantastic actor. dint know he’s got such good writing talents.
Welcome Dibakar,
KKG for me was a film that was heart warming. it got me back to my childhood days when I’ll sit with my uncle and watch those hrishikesh mukherjee films.
a great film can never be put inside a single genre….and so is the case with KKG.
looking forward to OLLO…..
P.S- read in an interview that you are a fan of scorsese, was wondering what are your thoughts on woody allen? somehow the subtle understated feel of your cinema reminds me of the woody of 80’s.
WELCOME DIBAKARRRR!!!! :D
@ Rick!
Nice idea man! Dibakar on Woody! Nice!
When my dad came out of the film, he said that he hated it. He went through a similar thing long time back. And the movie made him very uncomfortable. But now he looks back at it as a good movie.
Welcome Dibakar….
KKG was an accurate depiction of Indian middle class and real estate scam….I think the normal people in extremely tight situations some times apear as funny or may be interpreted as funny but in reality its their inability of hitting back…
Welcome Dibakar!
I grew up in a small town that’s now part of the NCR. And watching KKG brought back so many nostalgic memories. The early morning activity, the banter on the buses, the ubiquitous estate agency/property dealer (when i was growing up, every third person wanted to become one), the conversations on the dinner table, the reputation of the akhadas. This is one film that has captured the essence of middle class delhi like never before. Even though the land scams never affected me or anyone close to me personally, I could relate to the movie so much. Hats off Dibakar!
And yes, as you said…it wasn’t a comedy per se. It was a bittersweet image of life – the one I’ve lived and the one most of us around have lived.
All the best for Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. I’m really looking forward to it.
welcome dibakar. funny is relative. those that were actually robbed by bunty the superchor might not enjoy OLLO very much.. then again, if they have a sense of humour and the ability to separate the victim from the viewer, they might. for the most of us (myself included), watching paresh rawal in 3 getups is more than enough to pull me into the theater. now, with the kickass music and promo you’ve got going on, the curiosity only piques even more. here’s wishing you and your team the very best…
It seems like there is a N missing in your name….
WELCOME to PFC.
Can’t wait to see OYE LUCKY.
oye Shaitan Singh… Sorry Dibankar… Sorry Dibakar… Loved your earlier movie… Really looking forward to OLLO (and your future stuff in general)
. Best wishes for its release…
.
Btw, always assumed you to be Punjabi/Delhi guy… Realised it only recently that you are Bengali (?). And thats intended to be a complement
Dibakar, thanks for making KKG, one of the two great Delhi films (the other being Monsoon Wedding). As a former Delhiite, I’m glad that you represent my city because you do it honestly.
Good luck with OLLO.
hey welcome…dibakar….
u shud have done to them what Joe pesci did to ray liotta in Goodfellas
“Am i fuckin funny..?”
KKG was a fantastic film….
eagerly looking forward to OLLY….
Am too glad that you are blogging..!!
haven’t even read what you have written..!!
I saw your interview with Masand which was posted on PFC, i loved it..!
oye dibakar oye.. welcome yaar.. teri picture rock karegi.. saaley.. likhta rah bas tu bhaincho…
Welcome to PFC, Dibakar! And by extension, Kanu too (you must be reading this)
I’m consciously staying away from reading any blog or watching any trailers of OLLO, coz I want to go into the theatre with absolutely no preconceptions. Loved the opening scene and the last suitcase scene with a drunk Khurana in KKG, among many others, of course.
Looking forward to OLLO!
Dibakar, hearty welcome to PFC!
“Oye. Tere picture ki DVD bakwaas hai yaar.” Capital!
oye welcomeji…..cinemawala geet hai ji….
“Ke b(v)aat hai babuji..”
“O jee Moojeh Yeh Saare Plot Ek Hee Jaise Lag Rahe Hai – South Kidhar Hai!”
:-D
Ye South padta kidhar hai jee, fab timing by Shorey..loled on that one..!!
Oye Dibakar…!!!
Welcome hai ji!
KKG was a masterpiece. I had done my seminar paper on your film in my M.Phil course work last year in Delhi University. “middle class, urbanization and structure of living space in Khosla ka Ghosla.” It’s so layered and multiface film. You said right.. It’s not a comedy. It’s LIFE. As the ultimate charlie chaplin said and i quote, “life is a tragedy in close-up, but a comedy in a long shot.”
Like the charlie, KKG is a ‘long shot’ of life. And what a brilliant shot!!!
@ honhaar goonda
“O jee Mujhe to Yeh Saare Plot Ek Jaise Lag Rahe Hain ~ ye South padta Kidhar Hai ji?”
It’s a deep comment about our cities ‘new’ part. like Delhi’s NCR region or some new colonies in our older north Indian cities. They don’t have anything special about their architecture like cities older part. They don’t have a unique face and because of that they don’t have the long emotional/ nostalgic relationships with it’s people.
“ye yahaan kaam karti hai saahab, arey raam katori…”
“saahab aapko nahaana hai? kuaan yahin hai.”
“multeeplaix, complaix…”
“jab mata ki marzi hai to hum bandey kya kar sakte hain”
“makaan aapka hai?…to le lo”
“chiraunjee lal!”
“main agents se baat nahi karta”
“oye amreeka jaane hamko bhool to nahi jaayega oye”
“rajma chadha de, 2 seeti maar de”
“mama lagta hai…ke ukhaad lega”
“don’t worry. m gonna kiss you”
“pehle ice daalte hain yaar, fir soda”
kul milaake kehne ka matlab ye hai bauji ki jispe padti hai wahi dard samajhta hai, baakiyon ke liye to comedy will rule above other things. all the best with OLLO. rocking music. film looks good.
“apna jeda munda..lucky..single hai ki bachelor!”
I love that Sahni sahab’s character played by Vinod nagpal.. and the punch every time he puts in his “ye desh hi bhaincho compromise par chal raha hai!” or “ab dekho kal kaun bhaincho aakar baithta hai meri bagal wali seat par!” every small character, his or her style, attitude, every single detail is so perfect and researched. It looks like every single move was there in the scriptbook before the film was made! It’s almost flawless.
And the beautiful thing is it motivated so much ‘new’ in Indian cinema. as jaideep verma mentioned that KKG’s success is a hope to all of them who are making a meaningful ‘new-wave cinema’ in India.
Welcome..Welcome Dibaker..had been waiting for a long time for you to start blogging on PFC..
Welcome to PFC Dibakar. Even though, I had a lot of fun watching KKG, I haven’t called it a comedy. I have referred to it as being funny, nice and ‘with heart’ to some of my friends.
I believe its identification with the characters in KKG and sensing a pseudo-victory for themselves that the ‘laugh’ comes out from.
I did laugh a lot, I did because I loved the characters, I did because I miss them in my everyday life, I did so that I can hide some tears at times, I did so that I can feel that I have won over Khurana, but most of all I did because I loved the movie.
Eagerly waiting for OLLO. Good luck!
Tushar…you missed out some more beauties…
“Yahaan pishaab karna mana hai…oye hum yahan pishaab karne thodi aaye hain”
“Cricketeron ke naam bade dangerous hote hain…run banana woh band karega…joote isko padenge”
“Aap chai lenge? Oh ji nahi ji…
Coffee lenge? Oh ji nahi ji…
To fir aap chup hone ka kya lenge?”
and the best line in the movie…
“Aap broker hain ya party?”
Paaji, main to kehta hoon its endless. There have been a couple of occasions when I have put on the CD to watch one scene or two from it and have ended up watching the whole film. It’s time they should publish a screenplay book for it, a la East is east.
This is the only film that I could proudly gift my parents off late. And they loved it as well.
Mihir, agree with you on Nagpal ji. kya chrakter tha.
fir dekhni padegi bhaincho.
rbehemoth – Punjabi and Delhi are not synonymous. This conflation of Punjabi and Delhi really bothers me.
There are loads of us Bengalis who were born and raised in Delhi and claim to be as much Dilliwalas/walis as anyone else.
In fact, my Punjabi friends have never felt that they had any special claims on the city (we were all children of migrant families) so this is really strange to me.
Dibakar – loved your first post. Loved your first film too. I grew up in New Rajinder Nagar (I read an interview where you said you grew up in Karol Bagh) so I feel like I totally get what you were on about.Best wishes for your new film and you bet I’d be rushing off to see this one too.
guys : my favorite: Anupam Kher walking so carefully with alcohol bottles in the bag… embarassed whenever they clink!
oh totally. all scenes are kick-ass. the film has practically no dull moments, may be some when Anupam Kher gets a little more mad and angry at Cheri puttar. But then the film takes the theatrical turn and its hee hee haa haa again.
I could relate to it in many ways, dilli, the whole constructing the house in a new ‘calonee’, thekedaaron ke pange, bureacratic pange, passport agents, middle-aged(or older) people looking at one bright spark of ‘achievement’, the whole ‘america jaana hai’ fascination, the typical dilli girl-shy guy ‘multinational wich kaam karda si’ angle, then the faaltu baitha hua bada bhai(property ka dhandha acha hai), all these simple things around us yet hardly put together so rarely on screen. stuff of a classic.
Welcome dibakar.
KKG was pitch perfect.it would have been a great film to go for a broader international audience in the foreign/arthouse circuit.
Good luck with OLLO.
Welcome Dibakar Banarjee,
Your blog itself asnwers the question posted in the title. You are totally funny!!! Or did you not intend it to be? Doesn’t matter, I laughed in the end after reading, so yes you are funny. I am excited after watching Oye Lucky’s promos. Good luck.
Jateen.
and Pravin Dabbas is no flash the pan fancy character when he says I’m going to U.S. for a job(a sudden transition from a middle class family), couple of scenes later, he opens the fridge and is shown wearing a IIT Delhi t-shirt, nice stroke there Dibakar. Scenes are just too many to count, one of the many line that comes to my mind is, Boman’s DeSaant, Vary Desaant..!!
KKG respected our middle class mentality as well as our brains, loved the movie for that..!!
belcome belcome haiji..
KKG was rooted perfectly. I remember thinking finally someone put in the effort to set a story up properly and it showed!!
good luck with OLLO
cheers
Welcome!! As Striker mentioned funny is relative. I agree, all my relatives are funny
“Oye Welcome hai ji apna hi PFC hai”….
Welcome to PFC Dibakar!! I really loved KKG. Just a question,
How do you get everything about Delhi so right, you being a bong? is it because of Jaideep Sahni’s writing?
I’ll be very honest.
I started watching KKG midway and found it kind of depressing. I was taken back in time and that rubbed me the wrong way. I must have seen a couple of three scenes and flicked back to the News (ya!:))”Can’t be bothered” I said to myself. For the next two days, the movie kept on irking me and I decided to give it another shot.”Everyone must be seeing something that I’m not.”
It did take me back in time … again. Anumpam Kher is so like my Dad that it pissed me off. Bunty reminded me of my brother and I see shades of Sahni Saab in every third uncle that I must have spoken to at the gurudwara!
Yes, its a funny movie but it also brought out anger, worry, laughter and jubilation(in the end) which made me watch it again and again and again…
Its a favourite now. For the same reasons I had disliked it in the first place.
Thank you Dibanker. The DVD sits pretty in my collection.
A very warm welcome to PFC Dibakar. Hope to see you writing in the comments section as well…!
looking forward to watch your ‘lucky lucky oye’…
am sure u have made very good movie…
eagerly waiting for that..
warmth.
oye welcome ji welcome…
i watch KKG everytime me & my bro meet.
we just laugh our lungs out…
love it when VP makes fun of PD abt his name…
fawkin hillarious.
lookin forward to OLLO!
Jai Mata Di.
Hey Dibakar welcome here…KKG is something else..I can go on and on about it.
“** indeed KKG was a brilliant creation and when I were not aware of your name ,I told my parent so may times that if I would be in jury of any awards I can put all categories to this movie .YES ITS TRUE ! ALL CATEGORIES.
As long as genre of KKG is concerned, yes middle class must laugh on KKG coz that laugh is not comic but a sigh of those circumstances.
My firms believe is the success of your last product is just bringing more responsibility and require more efforts to keep it. I am an aspirant writer/director myself and inspired by simplicity of your KKG started a new project ,any taker ! ? :-) ïŠ
Oye Welcomeji.. welcome..
Diba(n)kar (heh heh..couldnt resist that)..KKG was a very apt reflection of the times that we live in… very true to life and very well made…. excellent work…I hope that OLLO is as good if not better.. best wishes for its success
super stuff !!!
welcome to pfc …
more more more articles plsssssssssssssssssssss
Tanya,
Dibakar madam! :D
Oye welcome hai jee Dibakar saab- isko kehte hain entry- superbly funny post- keep it up!
hey ..
had watched KKG, brilliant satirical take on “life” as u put it. But the fact with truth is that when done in a comical sense it’s better recieved than if portrayed in a serious grave manner. coz the joke is not on ‘A’ particular person or thing, the joke’s on everyone hence can be easily laughed at or registered. It is people’s attitude towards life specially indians ’sab chalta hai kinda thingie whether it is to do with terrorism, poverty, population or education… Mumbai Meri jaan portrayed this undrlying essence amazingly well. Wednesday was an answer to wake up and smell coffee.
I understand you with your films are not giving sollution or are preaching but simply higlighting the de-factos and if it’s done in a comical sense , there isnt any problem coz we as people have made life a big joke. hence we even se serious problems in a funny way . the problem does not lie in ur art but in our outlook. continue the work and somwher someone will see the meaning behind
kuddos to ya !!
are Dibakar sirji Matarani ki kirpa se aap bhi aa gaye….welcome ji…jai mata di!!!
Dibakar jee, ur KKG was one of the best Hindi movies i had seen in recent times. It bought me back memories of the time i spent in Delhi. It was wonderful that u choose to showcase Delhi, through the life of a middle class Punjabi family. Every thing in it was absolutely perfect. Having stayed in Delhi for a year, i could identify with the millieu, the accents of the characters, their biases etc. I had seen many a Mr.Khosla there, and also characters like Khurana.
and am hoping u will do the same with Oye Lucky.
Welcome to PFC sir.
OMG!! when did this happen??
i cant beleive such idiot producers still exist
hahaha
Welcome to PFC.
One more filmi entity here and PFC has become more active and alive.
May god bless your films not only with Funny but silly, intelligent, sad, bitter, etc etc modes where ever these are needed in the scripts so that we get wonderful films.
All the best for OLLO!
Welcome again on PFC.
Hi
Nice to see you in PFC. I always feel like comedy can also be a good mean to show a serious issue like u dint on land mafia in KKG. I was really touched with the movie. hrishikesh da made so many such kind of movies with lot of good issues shown in sensible and funny…just avoiding too serious or too over the top…anyway keep bloggin
oye welcome dibanker… i mean dibaker sir….
aap pfc pe aaye hai…. yeh baat too good hai ji…
“picture hit hone ke baad humko bhulna nahi oye”….
Are waah, aaj dil khush ho gaya aapko yahan dekh kar. asal mein KKG in saalon ki sabse serious films mein se thi, lekin Funny isliye ho gayi kyonki mere khayal se wo aapka style hai. Oye Lucky ke trailer dekh ke ye aur bhi saaf pata chalta hai.
dukh ko itni hansi ke saath kehna aasan nahi hai aur iska ek aur faayda hai. ise wo log bhi pasand karte hain, jinhe sad films pasand nahi hoti. KKG isiliye sab tarah ke logon ne pasand ki.
oye lucky ka besabri se intezaar hai…
KKG is one of the best films I’ve watched. I can hear you think “Oh no.. again?” :-). By the way,Did you happen to see the thamizh remake of it?
Oh yeah. I forgot. Welcome to PFC!
GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT MOVIE KKG was mannnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankyou for such a wonderful wonderful movie…….
Anupam Kher ,Boman Irani , Vinay Pathak , Ranvir shoorey , Navin Nischol
what a brilliant casting……
Most refreshing dialoges…….haahahahahahahahahahaha…sochte hi hassi aati hai…….”Chirongi toh khaane ki cheez hoti hai naa ji”……hahahahahahaha
“Kamaal hai, aach keh raha hai ke naam badalna hai , kal kahe ki ghar badalna hai phir ekdin kahegaa maa baap badalna hai”
“Ohji aap toh bina piye hi funtoosh ho gaye”
“Aap party hai ya broker , aap party hai ya broker”
Now u know what the expectations have become very big…..
So all the best for Oye lucky lucky Oye
Hi Dibakar,
First things first, KKG was a great movie and really looking fwd to OLLO.
Were you in BBPS? From the interview, you like the Dibakar I knew back from my school days. I was a year junior to you.
Was he really in BBPS? I thought he said in the IBN interview that he went to a Hindi medium school. BBPS is not Hindi medium but I guess he may have shifted to it later. Just curious, what Hindi medium school did you attend?
Welcome Dibakar! I like the way you kept Delhi as a character in KKG. I presume the same will happen in OLLO.
OLLO is a very Delhi sounding way of calling out to friends. lucky is a common nickname amongst Punjabi’s. I know someone who has a friend named Lucky. This Lucky got married to a girl named Lucky. To distingush between the two the girl was renamed ‘very lucky’ by her in laws. After all, she had married their son Lucky!
I’m not sure about the authenticity of this, it just might be anecdotal.
I hope OLLO turns out to be very Lucky for you. All the best!
Hi Dibakar. welcome to PFC. had taken your number from Urmi Juvekar quite some time back…but you know, the famous Assamese lethargy!! so, before I could wake up, you are here.. anyways, congratulations – for both being ready with OLLO and for Goa (see you there). Should I explain to ppl more about what I mean by “Goa”?
wow… i love this site!!!
Dibakar welcome to PFC… cant wait to see OLLO… it looks great!! best of luck..
Hi Dibakar,
I have seen KKG, amazing movie. I found the movie a complete entertainer. It has many moments where I laughed a lot. I guess this should not bother if some people find it funny and don’t, ultimately everyone will love this movie. So, Dont bother!
I hope Oye Lucky will be a good movie!
All the best
Regards,
Suraj
…tum choti baatoon main badi baatein kah jaatae ho baat pauvae ki kartae mazaa bottle ka de jaatae ho..aur woh bhi old monk…oye dibaker dibaker oye…
Hi Dibakar, as a delhiite I just want to thank you for capturing Delhi the way it should be. Watching KKK makes me so nostalgic. Its definitely one of those movies where you think, oh I’ll turn it off after this sequence, and the next thing you know is that you have just watched the whole movie again
Indeed a big welcome to a “different” film maker !
Hi DIBAKAR Welcome.
Hi dibakar, Welcome!! happened to see the remake of your film in Tamil…was pretty disappointed in it. The casting and the content of the original was not translated the way it should have been :( It was more of a copy than an apdaptation!! a whole concept gone for a waste!
COngrats Dibakar to capture the dil of Dilli. Anupam Kher and Vinod Nagpal embodied the very image of a middle class retiree. Shorey was amazing and his chemistry with Kher was jhakaas.
We have a huge family and all the uncles and aunts are such items . Whenever we meet on weddings and all there are so many stories to tell…and laugh .
Jio Dibakar Jio !!!
Boss, KKG is a milestone in my life. That was the first movie, I wrote on and discovered that (1)I can write and (2)A good debut makes a difference ….:)
Please do read the review- http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Khosla_Ka_Ghosla-111446-1.html
As i said there, “…the movie may fail to hit the mass, as the movie does not “awaken a generation” of “revolutionize thinking”, but surely gives movie lovers a hint that Hindi movie has a right direction to go!
Am now eager for Oye Lucky, already loving the title track !
All the best Dibakar !!
Cheers!
~fe~
I’m convinced u knew my dad!
From what i’ve seen of the film, Anupam is my dad through and through!
Never managed to finish the film as someone stole it!
I’m not even joking!
If I didn’t have my suspicions, i’d blame Lucky-The Superchor! ;-)
am going to invite to direct my idea. have no clue how to get in touch with you. so am keeping my fingers crossed that this platform … may… just…. click.
warmth.
S
What blew me away in KKG was that bottle of Rooh-Afzah on the dining table. Man…that was detailing, and that was the most defining aspect of KKG…quirky reality…sad and funny at the same time! And to know that somebody (Jaideep, you) always knew our ‘Rasnas’ and ‘Rooh-afzaahs’ and was putting them in frame was too big an inclusion.
Hope we find more of us (and our dirty bottles) in ‘Oye Lucky’ too…looking fwd.
Welcome aboard Dibakar..KKG was worthy of OSP award..Wish OLLO to blaze the screens with Oye Oye..Kamaal kitayee!
Mr Banerjee.
Just saw the theatrical trailer of OLLO in ‘Dostana’ and have to say, it was more interesting than the film I went to see!
Glad it’s getting a U.K release.
All the best with it!
Hey Dibakar!
Great to see you blogging! Let me tell you that KKG is one of my most loved films this decade. It’s a film I can watch over and over againa nd not once have I been bored. I’ll remain an admirer of you forever – if only for KKG.
@Tushar and The Narcissit:
Couple more :-)
“Chiraunji toh khane ki cheez hoti hai na ji”
“Very Good…I appreciate…Decent…Very Decent”
Dear Dibakar,
‘Fan’ is an overwhelming word so call me an admirer of your craft. After going through few of the above I am going to assure you my words too are not gonna be any different. Actually appreciation is the common language for all of us as far as your work is concerned. I wont call you a God, cause HE can’t be a film-maker. Neither KKG was like a fresh breeze nor it was something out of this world. Actually it one of the best available in the current scenario. It ORIGINAL. Someday in my life if reach a position where people would like to listen to what I say and if I am talking about Cinema, Khosla Ka Ghonsla will be an entire chapter of my talk. Again, cult is an overused word. Keep up the same kind of work and take good care of yourself as we need people like you around for as long as possible. Cheers
@Dibakar
I just saw “OYE LUCKY OYE”, I must tell u I have just fallen in love with your film. Outstanding Performances by all the actors, excellent dialogues, tight screenplay 130mins.
Right from the title sequence (it is a Paisa Vasool sequence) till the freezing moment of Lucky in the climax the entire film is brilliant. I am finding it very difficult to search for the right superlatives for this film.In a long time guys such a fresh subject with the smell of the environment has been woven so well in the film format.
Paresh Rawal after Mumbai meri jaan has come up with another trump card in 3 performing roles and you know what nobody is asking how come all 3 different characters look alike , the audience is so involved in the mannerisms of those characters there is no time for them to think in that direction ,ACE !!!
Abhay Deol, what a marvellous natural performance he has given,he has played the con-artist/thief to the T, his biggest commercial successfull film till date and this is going to benefit DEV.D opening collections too ,mark my words,Another ACE !!!
And the music WITH supporting actors is your third ACE !!!
CONGRATS TO THE ENTIRE UTV TEAM AND THE DIRECTION TEAM,
An Outstanding FILM EXPERIENCE !!!
GK
Hi Dibaker,
How are you???
I do keep hearing about you from Manisha.
I liked KKG.
All the best for OLLO.
Take care
Mamta Lall
Dibakar,
When I watch foreign films (Iranian, French, Polish, Turkish, etc.) that reflect the culture of their country (or some part of it), while telling a story, I try to think of similar Indian films, which I may recommend to my foreign friends. Those which reflect daily life and aspects of Indian culture, while still telling an interesting and engaging story. Khosla Ka Ghosla comes to mind as one such film. It reflects so many things that are very typically Indian – the house in which the family lives, having chai on a highway dhaba, eating samosas, independent girl riding a scooter, punjabi aunties wearing nighties with dupattas, etc. The details were so well thought and very Indian. More than a comedy, I would call it an interesting story reflecting modern Indian life with relatable and love-a-ble (and not so love-a-ble) characters, whose antics bring a smile to one’s face. Thanks! And then I think “why don’t we have more such movies”. Hopefully, we will have more in the future to look forward to!
Watching the movie sitting in Mumbai I started wondering how many of those in the hall are actually following the gray shades of the humour that is so so Delhi, West Delhi. Having my roots in Delhi I enjoyed the characters portraying their roles with such perfection. The slang, the half cut (not censored) abuses, and not to mention the detailing that went into styling the characters given the backdrop of the movie.
While it is imminent that one had to compare this one with KKG, but I would suggest that one should not as this comes in a different platter. If KKG is Minar Restaurant in CP, OLLO is the Kake da Dhaba right opposite Minar…both serving fantastic Dilli ka khana
Hi Dibakar…
You are a wonderful Director. I like ur all movie right from KKG to OLLO… I can watch these movies continuose.
Superb Movie.. Superb Acting.. Superb Music…
May god bless u all the success..
Hi Dibakar,
Your movies personifies Delhi and its culture . the choice of actors and the attention to detail is unbelievable.
You are the most promising successor to Hrishikesh mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee school of cinema.
KKG was flawless …one of the best flicks in Indian cinema. OLLO is good…but not in league of KKG.
Wish you luck for the next one.
Dear Dibakar,
Just saw OLLO..it was brilliant..intensely local, flavor, rich in characters, colors and textures. you captured the soul of the other middle class..
the detailing, visuals were great..it also was intelligent thinking cinema and very vibrant..
you will go far..i am going to ask Shyam Babu to watch this incase he hasnt..
cheers
ram

Dear Dibankar,
I loved your “Khosla Ka Ghonsla” and I also liked “Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye!”
Oye Lucky has caputured the essence of delhi’s panjab’s, their functions, Banquets, their galli and mohalla’s.
Having stayed in delhi for 9 years and being a Panjabi made me smile more often than a true bombayite ( my wife)
I had a few doubts:
1. Why does Lucky not get back at Handa after he dupes him?
2. Why does he take Bengali with him on his thefts even after Bengali dupes him in the restaurant deal?

Saw your film couple of hours back, think you have made really a good essay on delhi, and of our time. a brave effort.
hey dibankar…i am staying abroad for many years now ..but have a very strange sort of attachment with Delhi and haryana..as i studied near badarpur border for cuple of years..and the only way i feel connected to that environment being here is a particular kind of sun rays in my room sometimes and sometimes a part of some wall or somethings ..your movie is very very very very amazing depiction of such attachment with tremendous creativity when u said tht the idea started with tu raja ki raj dulari..as i grew with tht song being half haryanvi..u are far better ..far far better than any commercial showbiz creative heads in the bollywood blog.
Thanks Dibakar for both the movies. Please keep making as many as possible.
hey dibakar I think your films r funny as well as they carry a message. I am from delhi n living in US for long time now but ur films bring me back memories of delhi n I really like it for that too.
Hey Dibakar,
Huge fan of your movies…Actually I wasn’t one until I saw KKG recently, and then later OLLO. Its amazing how you have captured the Delhi flavor in both your movies…If your name is anything to go by, it surely means you were not born in Delhi or anywhere close…still the attention to detail is exquisite…Super impressed man…super impressed…Here’s a promise from me to you…Your next movie first day first show..

Hi Dibakar,
I loved Khosla Ka Ghosla – haven’t as yet managed to see Oye Lucky Oye…Is there any way one can acess the script for Khosla Ka Ghosla. The script was superb and I would love to study it to understand how a good script should be written. Maybe something like – its hosted on PassionforCinema for a day and then the link expires – and you can always ensure it cannot be saved.
Ive been meaning to get a hold of OLLO for a while. KKG was one of the most relatable films I have seen in a while. I wanted to say 2 things about the “comedy” in your movies
Its easy to laugh at things that are outrageous and hence ludicrous, which is why slapstick works so predictably. To make someone laugh at their own life is much more tricky, and thats precisely what your cinema seems to seamlessly achieve.
secondly, I think the reason the humor sticks out more than anything else is that it comes out of the characters and the situation as opposed to the dialogues or any orchestrated-for-comedy event. It makes for a very layered style of filmmaking, where “angry” and “dramatic” arent neatly sectioned off into their own compartments, but overlap at the strangest times, like life itself
Ei je Dibakar, Dibakar ei je!
OLLO Rocks!!
You are the Rockstar – we are your roadies.
Welcome to PFC. Its a movement sorta thing, a tight community of loosely connected loose characters, trying to be intellectual fart machines! Yahan tum kisi ko maa behen ki gaali dogey to, log tumhe thank you bolenge! :-) (AKashyap does that)
Chill!
Hola Dibakar!
Once again you have more than successfully lived upto our expectations and respect for your taste of film-making. OLLO, a breath of fresh air which is way too diverse from the big budget commonplace flicks. I have reviewed several blogs `n came up with a really apt oneliner:
A tacit slapstick with a niche in almost every department of film making.
All the best `n keep `em coming 8)
hi dibakar,
i have seen this movie six to seven times in theater i am a big fan of this movie i liked the simplicity an your unique direction style also the casting and their performance. wish u all the best
Hi Dibakar,
One film can be luck, 2 unlikely. I liked both and absolutely loved the nuances you’ve put in every scene in oye lucky. The character sketches are so so real…u’ve met them all somewhere. Except for Lucky :-)
I especially found the use of 3 P. Rawals in the movie very original… and for trusting the audience to be wise enough to not have to explain how one Paresh gave way to another. And the subtle similarities b/w all 3.
Keep up the grt work!
Hi Dibakar
it is great feeling to see a BBPS guy rocking in film direction.you have done school a proud. I remember you were always good in painting, quizes, debates, poem recitals and what not.. offcourse studies.I remember going to modern school for shankar’s painting events with you in school bus. you movies are an excelent blend of emotions and humour.. something very rare today. After watching ‘99′ recently I thought it must be yur work.. but someone else made it.kudos to you for making KKG and OLLO . simply superb movies. I look forward for many more movies from yu with Delhi as a backdrop. you have brought Delhi alive
HI Dibakar,
I live in nz since last 6 year. But actually from Delhi.
Now, I am greatest Fan of your after Lucky Oye. I like and adore Khosla ka Ghosla and take it is one off from your end. But now you win my heart and soul. YOu really know delhi heart beat and way delhi live…your movie only source of Delhite life in my life…I really appreciate your work and promise my self to buy original DVD of your movie .So you can keep up the Delhi work..
I am your FAN ,Air con and every thing. my happiness can only be felt ,while watching me your movie’s.When ever come to New Zealand ,be my guest.
I have read you complain elsewhere too about the laughter issue. I don’t know about KKG, but I saw Oye Lucky in a packed show at PVR Saket and want to tell you that the audience was laughing uncomfortably, every bit aware the joke was on them. People have been talking about Oye with so much affection it can’t be just comedy.
A lot of people may regard it as much more than a comedy. KUDOS!
It was awesome. And its nice to know that you will be blogging further.
By the way the conversation between the producer guy up there was very funny, or was it not supposed to be funny?
Bye!
Missed OLLO in theaters. When is the DVD coming out?
@ faiq
the dvd just came out
You have a great grip on the punjabis of delhi…Waiting to see your further adventures in the field of directing….may be Punjabis of Canada!
hi sir…very nice movie to watch n certainly a movie which makes a place in ur shelf…
who played the role of young store girl in the movie???
KKG n OLLO…..amazing pieces of work dude….
i mean really…
i sumday wanna make it as a director, music director, author, screenplayer :P (after i finish my business grads) lmao
n ppl lik u, esp u r helping me out to dream big
“ur” kind of movies is wat i luk out for in bollywood…unfortuantely…its a rarity in here u knw
will look out for movies from u…
btw u knw y major offbeat movies fail in India?
its not coz ppl dont knw how to appreciate it but…..
its
1)the right ppl dont always live in the metros near the multiplexes….
2)piracy- 70 bucks vs 240 bucks
n in 70 bucks a guy gets to keep the movie forever.
anyway i hope u NEVER take up an assignment with “BIG” Indian actors sorry entertainers…..IMO they suck n hardly knw how to act….(apart from a few)
anyway best of luck wid ur future ventures….
dada kichu bangla topic er upore boooye korro naa…:D
after all v bengalis hav so many typicalities….:)
btw IN THE CURRENT MAINSTREAM CINEMA, if i can call these ppl m going to name as mainstream actors, ABHAY DEOL, NASSERUDIN SHAH, OM PURI, MANOJ BAJPAI, KAY KAY MENON, IRRFAN KHAN are the only actors who can probably win an oscar for individual performances if given the right movie.
i hope u can give sum of them one
babu
your blogging site is as intresting as your movies . really enjoyed …..
take care love
I saw your movie OLLO in almost empty theater . The Parallel Film that running Yuvraj . I tried to convince many people while buying ticket that instead of Yuvraj buy OLLO but they didn,t listen. i can not help laughing at them. Having seen your earlier work KKG I was sure that i am going to get similar experience in OLLO and I tell you i am not disappointed by both you and Abhey . thanks for making us a gr8 film for me it is the standout movie of last year. Fnally I cannot forget Paresh Rawal, HIS triple role as the father, gogi bhai and Dr. Handa is mind titillating
Hello Da,
I first saw your movie OLLO by chance, as I have recently started watching Abhay Deol’s movies (what he is best known for – Parallel cinema). I admit I watched a dvd version. Now I must tell you I was in the mood for a lite movie, one which doesnt emotionally manipulate or taunt. OLLO was that and more for me. Your portrayal of characters, use of humor was so appropriate in all situations. I must say some scenes did evoke a kind of sadness and in all I fell in love with Abhay’s portrayal. Thank you so much for giving a movie which in terms of direction, script, screenplay, cinematography was the best saturday entertainment I could look for. Now coming to KKG I loved the way you showed an upper middle class family, the typical situations at home, the morning laughter therapy groups, the love between siblings…the dinner table conversations, the typical mother-son, sibling conversations, love and friendship. I think you are first bollywood director I have become a fan of. Now this is my best compliment for your work
HI,
i haven’t read all the other comments so i’m apologizing bforehand for any sort of redunduncy. Plus i’m actually doing this assuming that u, DiBAKar do read the comments..
As a film student and film lover i had to shout at top of my voice for 6-8 months about how fabulous KKG was but nobody would bother to listen till it bags a National Award. But i skipped my loyalties and did not watch Oye Lucky in theatre. Finally when i did see it on DVD i couldn’t help cursing myself..
Anyways, point i want to make here is about the “comedy”ness of both the films. Personally i feel the films are extremely realistic (cliched, i know) and the laughter comes not at the “jokes” but at the puns life presents.. Either ways i consider it an out and out success as i never had to ask the questions “how the hell is it possible?” or “who the hell in a normal world would do that?” during any point of both the movies…. Hats off to the new teacher…
Lastly.. Ur DOP is awesome…
and just for kicks, wittiest dialogue was the one from KKG where they are planning to visit Mata ka Mandir, Sethi denies and Khurana says, “Chal ae, Omlette kha chuke hai…” .. Insane timing…
Aaditya
Hey Dibakar
Bang on!! and as they have said you cannot be two time lucky, why one has to give genre to the movie oh Dibakar he makes comedy, Anurag Kashyap he makes only dark movies, come on,
I really liked the fact how you take a normal middle class family’s situations in both of your movies and relate it to it, not like palatial sets where one can only live in false dreams.
By the way, your voice sounds like Rajit Kapur (Sooraj Ka Satwa Ghoda)
Not only his voice but he himself resembled to Rajit Kapoor when Rajit was doing the tele serial Byomkesh Bakshi.
After I had watched Oye lucky, my wife asked me about the movie.. and I told her that although it makes you laugh, I am feeling very sad as well… and I couldn’t stop thinking about Lucky’s character for the next few days and almost went into a mini-depression during that period.. it’s a rare movie which does not have to resort to inane profoundity to make a point and you pulled that off brilliantly.
sahi nabz pakdi hai audiance ki “pakde rahana chodna mat ye dibakar banerjee ka majboot jod hai”
I loved the movie and I did find it funny, the kind of funny classics like baton baton mein aur khatta meetha. I feel that you have filled a void that bollywood had. It was long since anyone made movies like that. I also wanted to ask you if you have studied in Bal Bharti Public School, Delhi, I think you were a year senior to me. Are you the same All rounder Dibakar, that I remember.
