Amitabh in PAA : Full Trailer
Neeraj Ghaywan | Qwiki | November 3, 2009 at 10:41 pm
A lot of us have been anxious about Amitabh’s look in PAA. The trailer is out. In this film, Amitabh suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Progeria where he ages faster than the normal biological clock. Abishek and Vidya play parents to him. I like the music ( Illaya Raja). This is Balki’s next after Cheeni Kum. Enjoy!

Wow! The trailer should have been longer
make way darsheel safary … here comes your match !
That is a big statement to make on such flimsy evidence. Somehow, AB’s recent track record does not give me too much hope. Hope I am wrong.
recent track record ? ha ha ha …really who cares ?
well, i do. dont you?
Awesome!!! Amitabh is a rock star. The only actor who has constantly stood head & shoulders above the innane movies he acted in the Eighties. I hope he continues to entertian us through the years!!!
Awesome awesome awesome! But isn’t the plot of PAA very similar to Francis Ford Coppola’s JACK?
Here’s what Wikipedia says:
Robin Williams plays the role of Jack Powell, a boy who ages four times faster than normal as a result of a disease similar to progeria.
It looks like a straight rip-off of Jack. I have watched the movie and loved it. I hope they have done justice to the original.
@ Neeraj: the premise is that of a person affected with PROGERIA. That alone doesn’t qualify it to be categorized as a rip-off of JACK. It may, or may not be.
Was KOI MIL GAYA a rip-off of ET?
With all due respect, .. How many Books are written on the Same subject..would you refer to them as rip offs?
When Different Theatres/Theatre Companies put on Plays by Shakespeare/Shaw etc…Do you also refer to them as rip offs?
Don’t you think a subject can be handled more than one way. I would think it’s the Way the subject is portrayed/handled that would determine if it’s a rip off/plagiarism or not. Just my humble opinion.
According to the web site, this is the preview:
Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is an intelligent, witty 13 yr old boy with an extremely rare genetic defect that causes accelerated ageing.
He suffers from a progeria like syndrome. Mentally he is 13, very normal, but physically he looks 5 times older. In spite of his condition, Auro is a very happy boy. He lives with his mother Vidya(Vidya Balan), who is a gynaecologist.
Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan), is young, progressive and a full of ideals, politician. He is out to prove to the world that ‘politics’ is not a bad word. He is a man with a mission. Auro is Amol’s son.
Paa is a ‘rare’ story about a father-son, son-father relationship.
http://paathemovie.com/
So it is not a copy of Benjamin Button and it does not sound like Jack except for having Progeria.
AB is really going to rock this one! Music sounds interesting. Wonder if it is original or recycled as was in Cheeni Kum?
what movie did cheeni kum copy?
Ilayaraja used his own tunes that he had given decades ago in South Indian movies. The music in this trailer sounds very fresh to me.
I agree AB is awesome actor!!!! But what in the trailor triggered this outpouring here???
PS: Sry I am being spoilsport
And that is the reason we have stars that are any day bigger than the movie in which they are. The reason behind the existence of Johars and Chopras who just have to get “stars” in their movies. Nothing else really counts.
@contra; @Neeraj —
It is just the actor’s attempt that we are going gaga over. At 68, in INDIA, this is an achievement. Forget my ignorance about the regional film ind, but I do not remember ANY actor from Bombay film industry attempting something like this at this age right from Dadamoni to Dilip Saab to Mr. Dev Anand (who is content sitting in his castle and making films he is happy about – without bothering about the content or the quality or the times he is in).
We are very well aware that the movie might turn to be a damp squib and that this ‘foreplay’ as Mr. Ratnakar puts it, might not lead to an orgasm at all!!
The trailer would have been more fabulous if Paa would have taken me in the film …
Simply Brilliant…
brilliant…..amitabh bachchan shows what a true `actor` can do.puts to shame all those badshahs n kings who look like talentless thugs in front of him…………
Bravo!!!! Take a bow AB SR. Sir…
Now thats what we call performance..
Thats why i like Indian movies(any language) any day!!!
I just wish the movies lives above the expectation!!!
Here is an actor who always challenges himself and always wins.
a treat for all Indians n overseas..
thats a maestro ..is he???
ALL THE BEST…
What performance ??…..or are you acknowledging the attempt ?
the holy attempt and also how we see the actor or the character seen in the trailer..
Superb music I must say! Hope the film is not tear-fest as films on such subjects often turn out to be..
Movie already released ? Because people are already praising the performance !!!!!!
Contra, thats what is called foreplay, arousing the expectations, the orgasm part will be known after the release.
hahahaha
No it’s just the teaser making people go wild. I don’t understand which part they are so convinced about. We have hardly seen the expressions!!!
But you know that’s passionate (@ “cinema”) people for you!!! hehe
Hmm real passion or some kinda “faked orgasm” a la Meg Ryan, don’t mind it, am in a bit of twisted up mood ,he,he.
meg ryan? care to elaborate?
Harry Sally meeting..fake orgasm happening..
totally agree…while storyline seems 2 be copied as pointed out by some people…this trailer is not saying anything about the performance…
But one thing 4 sure….the music is great…
Trailer are good lets see if movie rise up to the expectation
@Ratnakar: At least we have an actor(a superstar) who challenges himself in various kind of roles at this stage of his career not t like others restricting to one or two kind of non expressive roles making fool out of regular audience
Let’s be + ve about the movie may be we have yet again a milestone movie from Indian cinema
Knowing Mr Bachhan a little from his movies he will at least make a sincere attempt …..the rest one can never predict…
I dont know….After Black, Nishabd, recently Alaaddin and now this…I just cant wait to see it. Besides Cheeni kum was lovely.
I am sorry to be the cynic here……but the trailer hardly says anything…..like a movie, a trailer also has a start…and a climax which leaves everyone gasping for breath…..eg: Dev D and Gulaal.
This one has nothing….what exactly are we going gaga over ?
If we are applauding AB’s attempt at playing such a role then people should at least mention it.
Yup Vineet == agree that the trailer should have been longer; and I have mentioned in my comment that the odes are for AB’s attempt and zeal at this age.
From 1969 to 2009; not a single drop of perspiration and passion diluted!
” Meri Aapki Generation se yeh dil se request hai, ki puraane gaanon ko remix na karein. Woh waqt alag tha, unn gaanon ke peeche matlab alag tha, woh gaane uss waqt ke saath taluq rakthe hain, unhe kharaab na kijiye. ” – Gulzar.
Balki, pls stop recyclying Raaja Sir’s gems. In Cheeni Kum, you destroyed the maestro’s songs from Mani Rathnam’s Mouna Ragaam. In Paa, you are again butchering the maestro’s songs from Balu Mahendra’s 2005 film “Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam”, the song in question being “Kaattu Vazhi Kaal Nadaya”.
Listen to the original here :
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/p/x/aVmgR-IlJt.As1NMvHdW/
Why does Rajaa consent to this recycling ?
Completely agree with Gulzaar sir and thanks for pointing this out. I do not understand the language but would be sure that they would be written with depth and composed with the utmost sincerity.
But compared to the disgusting remixes
where you have neo-pimps
‘re-hashing’ music and neo-sl*** dancing to the tunes of KABHI AAR KABHI PAAR KABHI TEERE NAZAR or MERE NASEEB MEIN TU HAIN KE NAHIN, Balki’s reorganization must sound like Mozart’s second stint!
BTW, does Balki have Rajaa sir’s consent to this re-working?
Guys, Illayaraja is the music director of this film. I think if an artists reconstructs his/her own composition, its better than someone bushwhack redoing it out of a keyboard.
Gulzar is definitely one of India’s greatest lyricists but its just double standards on Gulzar’s part. If he can rewrite “Yeh Ishq Nahin Aasan” adding “Aids ka Khatra Hai”, then there is nothing wrong with remixes either. His own words can be used to criticize what he did with famous couplets just replacing gaane with sher. “Meri Aapki Generation se yeh dil se request hai, ki puraane gaanon ko remix na karein. Woh waqt alag tha, unn gaanon ke peeche matlab alag tha, woh gaane uss waqt ke saath taluq rakthe hain, unhe kharaab na kijiye. “
looool .. its not remixing of sayari but using it in diff context. next u will also frame PIYUSH MISHRA for remixing : sarfaroshi ki tamanna and ye dunia agar mil jaaye bhi to kya hai .
Hi,
Let me first congratulate Big B for this feat in the log list of those he is tiresomely used to. But, I’m sure, this one is as special for him as for the entire nation, Bollywood and his lovers all over the globe. The film should be very special for him for at least 3 most important reasons, what I can see.
1. Big B wears a look.. whoops.. what can I say? Are words enough? This is superlative.
2. This one is probably one of even his entire career’s most challenging assignments. Hats off !!!
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I look at it as a big milestone for ABCL which has been through so much, finally to achieve remarkable feat. What a comeback for AB Corp.!!!
There must be other factors like Abhishek’s involvement in production with this film and, as Big B must have felt, seeing a son playing his father. Must be emotional on a psychological level.
Coming back, I just hope this experimentation by AB Corp goes far and proves to be a big leap for the entire Bollywood. There were several characterizations and looks designed for him in several films. But, without any disregard for any of them, I can see that this has been chiseled just for him and goes beyond greatness. Going by the trailers, no one can match the intensity we notice in his playing this and portrayal.
Just a little word of caution at the end. I’ve spent last few days writing, commenting and responding to several comments on my own as well others’ blogs with regards to the new trend of ruthless reviews.
I just wish AB Corp gets its media and promotions right. Over the last 2-3 months what we have noticed was that reviews ended playing a very significant role over and above brilliant marketing, promotions and PR. This also has got something to do with the re-surfacing trend of first positioning heroes and then killing it. Big B only played that hero in timeless classic Main Azad Hoon, long back. Now, as the media has grown its claws and mushroomed, it has its good as well evil effects both to the same intensity.
So, what happens is that when a small info or update starts surfacing, the entire media starts making scoops and heroes out of the project and the protagonist respectively. They project both the project (film) and the protagonists out of proportion. But, the news is so ripe and stale by the time of release that they need to kill the heroes they made out of protagonists till this point and it becomes necessary for them to say death.
Hope AB Corp is just careful. All the best.
I love the music and cinematography so far. I hope the movie is as good.
The web site is interesting – http://www.paathefilm.com/
i think its ab’s body language as a child which leaves me spellbound..the best part of the promo is its simplicity!!!
i liked the trailer …even if the story line is copied or inspired i hope theyve made a good movie.
i didnt personally see anything about mr bachhan to go gaga over though…but i do look forward to seeing his performance in the film
guys amitabh bachchan wil act as usual – superb..the superstar here is the make up guy n everyone who worked behind in achieving the look..TWO THUMBS UP to all of them..music seems amazing..lookin forward fr the OST n the film
everyone should learn to appreciate someones hard work. Amitabh Bachchan acting is good each time and everytime. Who are we to question it this fine fine actor. Dont do bad karma by putting someone down concentrate more on yourself.
Thank you.
Apart from very good make up, loved AB’s body language around 45-46 seconds, where PC Sreeram’s name flashes on screen.
Looking forward to watch Paa.
AB, Ilaya Raja, Balki, interesting plot etc., all these elements put together may deliver a nice film to us.
Interesting trailer. Doesnt’ matter how goog AB acts in the film, some reviewer will still ask him to go back to acting class
Is it just me or Amitabh is looking really scary in the stills of Paa…straight out of zombie movies…not one for me, i am afraid
actually param u r right……it is just you!….n yes, right again, this movie is certainly not for you.
The poster is an obvious rip-off of Jack. Robin Williams likes to hide inside a cardboard box just like whats shown in the poster.
Details of AB’s prosthetic makeup at his blog (Day 562).
http://bigb.bigadda.com/
Such ambition and dedication at his age – fantastic!
Ilayaraja is God!
I dont understand why is it so difficult for hindi filmakers…except for few ofcourse……to come up with their own new ideas instead of getting, so called inspiration or inspired from hollyood movies..
PAA is Francis Ford Coppolas JACK starring Robin williams with the same plot of agieng disorder…….Now that they have made PAA i hope it is not a complete rip off of JACK….PLEASE!!!!!!!
Nabil, though your fears are not unfounded, I think you are judging a book by its cover.
Let’s wait and see. I mean, BALKI appears to be a sensible director. There are countless May-December romances from Hollywood and European cinema. Did CHEENI KUM come across as a rip-off of any of them? BALKI managed to bring his own angle to the narrative.
As it stands now, the only similarity PAA bears with JACK happens to be the backdrop of PROGERIA.
Long live gurudeb.
See Aneesh (An Jo) iam not against the achievment what amitabh sir has achieved as what we can see in the promos…that is definetly commendable and bows to him….after all he is the GREAT AMITABH BACCHAN and he deserves every single bit of it…..And also i loved chinni cum but thats just one movie.Ya but iam sure this movie must have been made keeping in mind indian essence, emotions and values so that would be a very interesting and exciting thing to watch because jack was undoubtedly based on american emotions and values. So ya….. all the best to PAA , Balki and Amitabh Bacchan
I hope & pray that the movie is not a complete rip off cause that will take away a big part of appreciation due for Amitabh.
But I really feel sad to see that the poster above shows a Cardboard box which was also there in the movie JACK with Robin Williams in it.
The similarity should end here only, I pray….
tremendous music..
Wow …the last time there was so much hype over Amitabh’s ‘look’, we got Babban in RGV ki Aag. That’s not a high bar to cross, I guess :P
lol ! loved ya comment !!!
There never was a hype regarding his look at all; the hype was with regard to the fact that we believed RGV could somehow pull off SHOLAY ‘tribute’ what with the combination of AB’s talent to let himself be moulded by the director and the director’s vision itself.
On the contrary, there was a whole media event devoted to unveiling Amitabh’s look. If that is not hype, what is?
Jack is a 1996 comedy-drama film starring Robin Williams, Diane Lane, Brian Kerwin, Jennifer Lopez, Fran Drescher, and Bill Cosby, and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Williams plays the role of Jack Powell, a boy who ages four times faster than normal as a result of a disease similar to progeria.

just hoping its not another inspired movie.however great performance by AB sr.
