Anand Aur Anand : Raju “Guide” to preach at Cannes

Some 63-64 years ago late Chetan Anand had won the Grand Prix award at Cannes Film festival and had become the first Indian film maker to get this honour and now it’s the turn of his younger brother, the ever green star Dev Anand, to attend Cannes, where his most outstanding film “Guide” has been selected in the section of classic films.

That is a good news as now there is a curiosity about Indian films in other countries and Guide represents the best of Hindi cinema. Guide suggests that Hindi cinema has been different than the cinema existing in other parts of the world. Hindi cinema can combine good literature and high class music to make a wonderful film like Guide.

As per the news, Cannes festival has invited Dev Saab to showcase his classic film Guide.

Hearty congratulations to Dev Saab !!!!

Evergreen actor Dev Anand said he was happy to be invited to the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival, which is screening his film “Guide” in its ‘Classics‘ section.

Dev saab says “I have never attended any Cannes fest earlier. So, I am very happy to receive an invitation to attend it. I am indeed more pleased because my ‘Guide‘ is being shown in the ‘Classics‘ section, which I understand is a sideshow of the main festival,”.

“I am excited because I will have a chance to interact with film luminaries of the world there,” the octogenarian actor said. The festival opens in the city of Cannes in France in May.

Cannes Classics sidebar is a section that centres on screening a selection of new or restored prints of classic films, tributes to foreign cinema, documentaries on filmmaking, and occasionally rare or rediscovered footage of from days gone by, according to the festival catalogue.

And being a karmyogi, Dev saab wants to carry the best possible print of Guide with him and for this restoration work he has approached Hyderabad based Goldstone Technologies Ltd to renew the print with vibrant colours. Goldstone has colourised Dev Saab’s black and white hit “Hum Dono” also, which should be released in new coloured incarnation in coming months.

As per the news Travis Caddell, managing director of Goldstone Technologies Ltd, says

“The original negative of ‘Guide‘ has gone through a lot of wear and tear over the years and there are a lot of scratch marks on it. So, the print needs to be restored as the movie is highly popular even today. Dev Anand approached us again for the job and we are working on it”.

Dev Saab’s courageous efforts are unparalleled and praise worthy and we can do only one thing that is to salute the MAN and his “optimistic” attitude.

All the best to Dev saab’s efforts. Hope people enjoy the film there and understand the brilliance of director Vijay Anand which he has used in the songs of this wonderful film.

Dev Saab’s enthusiasm is quite understandable as shown in one of the song of the film. Aaj Phir Jeene ki tamanna hai. Life is renewed each time and it has lots of colours to bring joy to a man.

Time to cover this wonderful film “Guide” on PFC in coming days.

Hope we have atleast 100 people sharing this desire!!!!!

    THIS IS GREAT NEWS! GUIDE IS A FILM WHICH DEFINITELY DESERVES THE GRAND PRIX. OF COURSE NOW ITS NOT POSSIBLE AS IT HAS BEEN SO MANY YEARS AND HENCE THE FILM WILL NOT BE COMPETING.
    NOW I HAVE READ THE BOOK AND WATCHED THE MOVIE. IN MY OPINION BOTH ARE CLASSICS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. VIJAY ANAND TRULY TOUCHED THE PINNACLE OF FILMMAKING WITH THIS ONE. JUST SEE THE SONGS, THEIR PICTURISATIONS, THE PERFORMANCES, THE EDITING, ETC. TRULY MAGNIFICIENT! I COULD GO ON RAVING ABOUT IT!
    THE BOOK WAS DULY AWARDED THE SAHITYA AKADMI AWARD. THE MOVIE HAS NOT BEEN GIVEN THE HONOUR IT DESERVES. BUT THE PLACE IT HAS WON IN THE HEARTS OF CINEGOERS IS TRULY GREATER THAN ANY OTHER AWARD. I AM SURE “GOLDIE”ANAND AND DEVSAAB WOULD APPROVE.
    VIJAY ANAND SAAB!TRULY MISS YOU! NOBODY MAKES FILMS LIKE YOU ANYMORE! YOU WRER GREAT IN THE SERIAL “TEHKIKAAT” TOO. BUT WHEREVER YOU ARE, I AM SURE YOU WILL BE PROUD OF THIS FILM, JUST LIKE ALL OF US ARE PROUD OF IT AND PROUD OF YOU!!
    HATS OFF TO YOU SIR!!!!!!!!!!!

    @Anirudh,
    Audiences have always been loving Guide. Only Media of that time (especially film critics) could not digest the fact that Dev Anand actually could give a film like Guide. They had a certain image of Dev Saab as an actor in their minds and years they stuck with that certain image only and it was not possible for them to take an about turn from their pre concieved notions about him so they did not give much weightage to Guide. Dev Anand’s films used to get BO success so that factor was not in control of media people but they could not praise him for his performances even in the films which have passed the criterian of longevity.
    Film critics and media of that time was failed in recognising the Dev factor.
    By nature a large section of media can not like people who are silently involved in their work. Many media people demands pampering and attention as they think they can make or affect career of actors and film makers. And if Anand brothers paid much attention to their work and privacy then media people always had their own way to treat them.

    @Neerja,
    It will be so good if you not only attend the Cannes but write also about the events happenings there. :)

    @Pavan,
    Hindi Guide obviously. Though Dev Saab should consider releasing DVD of English version of Guide. That will be a collectors item if both the versions (English and Hindi) are released in a set.
    :)
