And the Best Hindi film of 2008 is….!

2008 has nothing more to offer and is coming to an in a couple of days..all awards will start, Filmfare, Screen, Zee, Stardust and what not. I want to analyze the Hindi films that impacted me the most! The list below is in no particular order:

Mithya: If not for Anurag Kashyap’s post, I would not have even recognized that Mithya’s concept is a What if from Don! When the duplicate Don is put in place, faking amnesia, What if he suffers actually from Amnesia?!! The characters were real, believable and the performances were excellent. Mithya was fun all along and completely unpredictable. Great watch!

Jodha Akbar: The scale was huge and so was the ambition of the filmmaker. Jodha Akbar suffered from what, in my opinion, a common mistake committed sometime or the other by all talented filmmakers – overindulgence! But the music, performances and the chemistry between the lead pair salvaged the show. Jodha Akbar was not a film without flaws, but which film is?

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na: Abbas Tyrewala’s debut and I was surprised to note many reviewers chided Abbas for his script. I thought the script was quite clever. The way the Khan brothers and Imran Khan’s Nightmare/Dream is integrated into the climax is an example of clever writing. And not to forget ARR’s fabulous score. Kabhi Kabhi Aditi, IMO, was the year’s best number, but unfortunately the filmmaker did not do justice to it on screen. The performances by the entire cast were superb but special mention must go to Ratna Pathak Shah. She also delivers arguably the best written line in 2008 – Phone pe Beta, Phone pe!

Rock On – One of the members of Magik has brain tumour, one of the members’ ex happen to be the wife of a rock concert organizer, one of the earlier competitors to Magik eventually becomes the Rock Concert Finale’s organizer. Rock on was filled with Cliches. But as a film it worked beautifully. The music, the cinematography, the narrative, the perfect cast all came together and indeed created Magik.

A Wednesday – Some said that the message the film delivered was irresponsible..some said the BGM was too loud. Some said it did not work as a thriller. But A Wednesday worked for me big time. A less than two hour film, edge of the seat narrative, lovely touches by the first-time director(he could have avoided certain RGV clich'©s like the actor getting threatening calls), an unexpected twist in the climax…but A Wednesday will be remembered for a long time primarily due to the two leading men, Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher.

Dasvidaniya – A concept which could have gone either way..too risky man. If I make a film, I’ll play safe and will not choose such a ‘bucket list’ concept. A Director supremely confident of his craft came out trumps in creating an emotional impact on his ‘intellegent’ audience.

Rab Ne Bana di Jodi – I hated the bike chase, I hated the Sumo wrestling sequence, I hated the word Rab, I hated when finally Rab solved all problems. I came out saying ‘lousy film, man’. Yet after a fortnight, there are many sequences which are staying with me. Suri picking up the rose and keeping it back in the vase as an afterthought; Taani standing with the tray when Suri starts saying she is really sick; Raj talking to the mannequin of Suri; Taani, to overcome her frustrations, keeps doing household chores which have already been done! I did not want to include the film in this list, but I guess the film included itself..power of Rab J

Ghajini – You know from the promos that it is a revenge saga..even if you missed it, the first scene of the film tells you that Sanjay Singhania’s girlfriend is killed. Then when you get introduced to Kalpana and your heart warms up to her, you get this ticklish uneasiness, is she going to be killed? And I think that’s why the film is successful. Not because of 8 pack abs, not because of the promos, not because of dumbing down Memento, but because the love story works!

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye – It is irony that the film which has two ‘Lucky’ in its title turned out to be the unluckiest film of 2008. I generally do not buy any Hindi film DVDs because, they are anyway showing all these films in one channel or the other. But I have decided to buy OLLO DVD, not because Dibankar deserved better luck in the Box office, but because I truly believe that this is the best film of 2008.

You may disagree with me! You are welcome to put down your best in the comments. And before anyone trashes me for not including Aamir, have not watched it guys. Was not able to catch in UTV also since I was traveling, hope they show it again in the near future!

Cool list. I have not seen Ghajini, Dasvidaniya and OLLO yet :-(
    .
I also liked Kunal Khemu movie Superstar. I thought it was pretty decent. Few neat songs.
    .
I am confused about Mithya or was it a confusing film for me. I thought the movie did not find its tone. Was it humor, black humor, tragedy, thriller or all. Otherwise, I liked the idea.
    .
Aamir rocks. Fabulous movie and fantastic music.

i agree with you on this that, OLLO is “the” best film of the year 2008 but i think you missed out one something in your list and that is ‘mumbai meri jaan”. i haven’t seen any bomb blast movie covering such a deep and varied aspect of society. lot of routes have been taken in the past to make a film on blast after math, but here what we see is the fact which is so close to the reality. esp, the madhvan story as a middle class, high value, patriotic guy, whose thinking get completely shattered by the bomb blast. about Mithya, you are spot-on on the fact that it was indeed a much much better but underrated film as compared to others in the list. the black humor and the small star cast didn’t work for many,or say they didn’t understood it well.
rock on was also gud but i guess it got more to do with its background score and also because many people thinks it was made my Farhan Akthar (poor abhishek kapoor :) )Ghajini stood out in its performance, music and as you said, the love story. im pleased that they didn’t go all memento way of storytelling, coz im sure that wud have been bash by audience(call it irony ;).
but OLLO is above all n kudos to dibakar for such well craft film. and this year’s best film is-OLLO :)

  6. I do like most of the films mentioned by you.Ghajini & RNBDJ were not great at all.But I respect Aamir & SRK for having done something
“different” within the commercial format. But yes I also liked Aamir, Tahaan, Mumbai Meri Jaan a lot.Aamir was truly an interesting film ( inspite of the influence of Cavite- look at the way Mumbai was shown in the movie-superb)& Tahaan was a very deserving film but sadly unnoticed.Mumbai Meri Jaan had a good style of narration & competent performances.

I haven’t seen Mithya, RNBDJ, Dasvidanya and OL LO yet. But from all that I’ve seen….Aamir would be the best movie this year, followed very closely by Rock On. As movies, both of them worked like a charm….all the elements came together to create extremely memorable films.
I like the rest of the movies in ur list as well…Jodhaa-Akbar, JTYJN, A Wednesday and Ghajini. They were all flawed in some way or the other, but made for interesting cinema.

I, too, agree that Jaane Tu…had a very clever script. And despite having a predictable story, it was unpredictable in its treatment. Esp. loved the Sohail & Arbaaz part…Baloo Bhaiyaa & Bagheera Bhaiya…coming to discotheques mounted on their horses….lol, that was funny !!!

  10. If double negative == positive, that might have caused double ‘lucky’ to be unlucky for otherwise a great movie like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. Definitely, one of the best of the year.

Was listening today to Dibakar (not Dibankar) audio i’view posted elsewhere on this site – a must-listen for everybody. Awesome discussion.

The big banners have failed this year: Jodhaa Akbar was too much like a text book, RNBDJ must be yet another SRK mindless affair (haven’t seen), forgot Ghajini 15 min after walking out of the theater (I became the victim of short term memory loss), Jaane Tu was yet another stupid college love story (that appeals to teens or people who are stuck in their teens) and so on.. though Bachna Ae Haseeno was decent watch. Yet to see few more mainstream ones, Dostana, Fashion and Race. Seemingly okay.

But the smaller films are the real winners, smaller is just a box-office relative term, but these movies are really BIG!
    - Dasvidaniya
    - Oye Lucky Lucky Oye
    - Aamir
    - A Wednesday
    - Mumbai Meri Jaan
    - Rock On
    - Welcome to Sajjanpur

Yet to see Mithya, Tahaan etc ..
Musically, few albums worked great from start till finish – Rock On was the greatest album, so was Aamir. Oye Lucky is tremendous, Jannat was superb! (almost every song’s a winner)

Some movies had few memorable songs: Dasvidaniya had a couple composed by the Kailasa band. Jaane Tu had a nice jazz track. Drona had few absolute worthy tracks (just forget the movie, listen to ‘Oop Cha’, & the title track, and remix of both – Sunidhi Chauhan rocks). Dostana had the song ‘Desi Girl’ which we love to hate. ‘Mit Jaaye’ from Kidnap, ‘Khuda Jaane’ from Bachna Ae Haseeno, ‘Pehli Nazar Mein’ from Race are some of the finest singles of the year.

Now lookin fwd to DevD in 2009. Hope it works both moviewise and musicwise!

  11. Yes I forgot to add Welcome to Sajjanpur. It was quite enjoyable. And purely from the time pass angle I liked Tashan ( I can handle the brickbats), Bhootnath ( except the climax),
Jannat mainly due to the music- which was a delight and Dostana- atleast the first half was certainly entertaining.Of course I repeat these 4-5 movies are mainly time-pass movies & no where good/great movies which I’ve already listed.

PFC is not meant for certain kinds of cinema, as some misinformed heroes or heroines seem to think.

But in a blog, it is difficult to control all comments and therefore there have been occasions earlier where there were personal attacks here in PFC. For instance, Tanul Thakur posted something on why he thinks he will not like Ghajini about a couple of months back. And till today he is being called names.(Not even on his post but also posts where he makes comments).

There have been dissenting voices too, but i was never accused of trying to dumb down PFC. This is a site where different voices exist, and calling it a psuedo site, just because there are articles which dont confirm to your view point is not done.

PFC is a Dharamshala but an open one where there is no restriction on anybody’s entry so all kind of people with all kind of motives come here and stay for a while and try to fulfil their desires and go.
Some may treat it as a place where any kind of dirt can be thrown. It may be a sulabh shauchalya type place for some.
It may even be a brothel kind of place for some.
Some may come just to release negative emotions accumulated inside and once they exploit somebody here they feel relieved inside.

Different people may stay in a Dharamshala to fulfil their respective desires but Dharamshala has its own nature.
If a person has brought a minor girl into the Dharamshala and stays there and rapes her then its an individual act. Its not charateristic of dharamshala but of that rapist.
    —-
There is a tale in Bodhist literature.
Lord Budha has finished his discourse in the evening and he says in the end, Please go and do your respective duties or works.
A thief was also attending the discourse and he thought that now its night and he has to go to steal something.
A prostitute was also listening Budha’s sayings and she thought,” now its time for me to do some business, let me go to be ready so that I can allure customers”.
A priest was there and he thought,” O God this is my time to light the candles before Lord’s statues and to pray”.
A homelady was there and she thought that she should reach home fast as her husband would be reaching after doing hard work all the day and she should make food for him.
Different people associated with different oocupations and thought processes took Budha’s sayings in different way.

For sane minds PFC always remains as a place to interact with people, who share liking towards a common field that is cinema.

Its flowing like a river, spoil it if you like and then it will be needing a treatment plant. Keep it clean and it may bring clean enjoyment and growth for all.

    On topic,
2008 should be an above average year and some good and many satisfactory films came this year and all kinds of films, big budget, small budget films were made, released and seen and appreciated as per their merits. Thats a good sign. Hopefully there will be a sanity regarding right price of stars and right budget for the films in coming year so that more transparency enter into the field and good films with right cast could be concieved.

    skywalker,
    off topic,
all know Phhool todna mana hai in a garden but people pluck them off the plants and authorities have to reiterate or keep notice boards.

Humanbeing has no special heating period and its production system works 24X7X365 all through the year hence we can not sing, considering this real birth data in mind, Jala do phoonk dalo alphabets ki kitabein because all know abcd xyz and can make words.

Sangam complex here. And Sathyam Cinemas also happens to be the direct/indirect distributor for most of the hindi films- big or small. When I say indirect- I mean thats in tie- up with a big player like a UTV, YRF etc.So generally whatever is not picked up by Sathyam usually doesnt end up releasing in Chennai. There are exceptions of course – one such movie being Ugly Aur Pagli.I think Anand I’ve got an idea for a write-up now.

  46. I am no film student, just a guy who is passionate about cinema. From a technical perspective my vote goes to Aamir. The symbolism, the BGM, the plot, the direction. It was awesome! Raj Kumar is the new find. I hear he has worked with Anurag earlier. Is it true? I cant wait for Baaraa Aana. Other movies I liked: WTS, OLLO, Mithya, A Wednesday, JA and Ghajini. This year should be known for UTV( new-wave), Rahman and great debuts!( Technical too, not just debut actor and actress )

Something like Akki getting 9 freaking crores for Jumbo. Ouch!

    @Vishesh,
Yes, 16 aane his own poem. Late VP Singh wrote it himself. He was a good poet or say artist as he painted as well.

    Artist, hence Moody :)

Thats different that he did not arrange singers like Jagjit Singh to sing his poems like few leaders did.

  51. Anand@ 45- thanks for the feedback.

Vishesh@ 47- yes Akki getting 9 crores for Jumbo is certainly too much. And I say this because if this figure is true how on earth will Percept make any money on the movie. There’s the dubbing rights cost, the dubbing cost, Akki’s 9 crores, payment to Ram Sampath, marketing cost. And after all this they screen it along with Ghajini & hardly 2 weeks from RNBDJ- fat chance that the’ll recover the costs incurred.

I am not very relegious about the Syd Field kind of ‘measuring tape’ approach towards script structure. But when you see the OLLO you start to believe. Here is a movie which has almost all ingredients. Direction with maturity, novel backscore mixing, actors who dont let down the dialogue, interesting situations, a middle class scenario with which any one can identify. But still the movie doesnt work. Especially in the second half.
The reason is that it doesnt has a proper structure. Script has situations haphazardly arranged. They doesnt arrange themselves into a linear narrative.
Lucky does thefts. And does it again. and again. All the issues associated with it; be it his parents, his girl friend, his friction with his godfather, everything hovers around. None of these elements is indispensible- which is always a danger sign.
It would be interesting to know whether the decision not to adhere to the 3 act structure was intentional from the part of writer. Was it another attempt at novelty?

I don’t know if this has been brought up on PFC earlier…but anyways. I had a heavy sense of deja vu while watching Fashion. Couldn’t understand why though. The mystery was finally solved one fine day when I was browsing through some of my old notes on films I watched.

Fashion was a cleverly modified version of the HBO movie Gia. It was the first time I’d seen an Angelina Jolie movie and I was completely smitten by her. :) In the movie, Gia (a supermodel) goes through different phases in her personal and professional life. Madhur Bhandarkar has simply broken down those phases into different characters – In fact, Shonali, Meghna and Janet were all first seen in Gia. So much for “research”.

So I have my own reservations about Fashion being called a good piece of work.

The other movies that I liked in 2008 were WTS, OLLO, Mithya, MMJ, A Wednesday & Maharathi.

@scriptlarva [cmt # 53]: totally agree. i found it to be a sequence of events stitched together with cinematic brilliance, but it lacked the soul. there was no binding factor between the sequences. it was all like mutually exclusive events tat can be viewed in parts, but as a whole it did not cut ice with the audience because of lack of structure.

Scriptlarva – crazyrals: Pity that the movie did not work for you. Did you enjoy the thefts in the first half? The same magic is not there in the second half, right? Have you thought why? Was it a mistake on the part of the filmmaker or was it a deliberately done? If it is deliberately done, why? :-)

The magic is back once Lucky gets caught and the way he handles all the victims who are looking at things that he has stolen…why? :-)

Crazyrals – It did not cut ice with the audience because the movie’s audience were in no mood to go to a theatre..it has nothing to do with linear narrative.
