Another impressive director…

2008 has been a particularly good year for debutant directors.. I was particularly impressed by Raj Kumar Gupta(Aamir) and Neeraj Pandey( A Wednesday). Last Friday, Jaideep Verma, a fellow novelist, released his first film, Hulla, which I’m told is fairly impressive. Have to watch it soon!
This post, however, is for my friend Girish Joshi, another debutant director, whose film Zor Laga Kar Haiyaa should release in December.
Last Monday, Girish held a special screening of his movie at Fun Republic. This was a movie I had been eagerly waiting for, as Girish had narrated the script to me in the days when he would pitch it to producers. This was a subject we all believed in- it delves into the need for tree conversation and has children enacting pivotal roles.
Prior to directing this film, Girish had assisted Raj Kumar Santoshi on Khakee and Shaheed Bhagat Singh. He was also the chief AD on Kaal.
Zor Laga Kar Haiyaa is a simple story:
A set of children living in a locality are particularly fond of and dependent upon a tree as they have built a tree house on it.
Enter a wily builder, who is determined to cut the tree in order to build a new connecting road. The kids, for their part, are equally determined to protect the tree. From here ensues a battle of one-upmanship between the builder and the kids.
The movie boasts of an impressive support cast- Mithun Chakravarty, Gulshan Grover and Mahesh Manjrekar. Amitabh Bachchan has lent his voice for the voice-overs.
The kid actors, though, are the soul of this enterprise.. their performances are spirited and carry great conviction.
As I walked out of the screening, I could say with a fair degree of certainty that Girish is another of the new directors to watch out for.. It’s always more challenging to pick wafer thin, issue centric plots and covert them into commercially viable stories which entertain as well as convey the message across.
I will perhaps write about the movie in more detail once it is released. But for now, I’m glad to see another promising director break in.. Here’s wishing the movie the very best!

@ Abhivyakti
No he is not the one you are talking about. He is a software Engineer turned filmmaker and has some credible stints with Rajkumar Santoshi and Dharma Productions.
@ Tuhin
I think you missed out on Seema Biswas’s name in the credits. She plays an equally important cameo. And another name people might recognize is the child artist Ashwin Chitale from ‘Shwaas’. He is one of the kids in a pivotal role.

Girish has put together a good drama that connects with children and conservationists alike.
Looking forward to this unique comedy of sorts, with kids who are on a mission to ensure their tree blooms free.
Cheers
