Dharmendra is returning in a big way with this film. With him, director Anil Sharma has given four hit films namely Hukumat, Elan-E-Jung, Farishte and Tehelka. Anil Sharma has also made Gadar- Ek Prem Katha like super duper hit film and a avergae hit Hero-Love story of a spy, with Sunny Deol and he has made Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyon with Bobby Deol also. This time he has gathered all the three Deols in his next film “Apne“. This can be Sunny and Bobby Deol’s efforts to make a film where their father, Dharmendra’s skills are utilized properly.

* * * *
Nana Patekar once said in his one of the interview, while talking about reality touch in the acting, that How Sunny Deol can know about what is hunger?

Both Sunny and Nana have been good actors in their own manners. Its quite possible that an actor may portray a shade of character on screen, through which he has not faced any encounter in the real life, based on his conviction and adaptability to the given false situations and above all his imagination may help a lot.

Dharam ji is father of Sunny and Bobby Deol and naturally he loves them too much. Sunny and Bobby both love their father too much. When Sunny and Bobby had appeared in the first session of “Koffee with Karan” and Dharam Ji was asked to say something about his sons, he had said mainly about Sunny Deol. He had said,”—
Sunny has proved him again and again as an actor and he wants to do so much for me. He thinks his efforts are not known to me. But I am his father, I get to know all the things…… I have some emotional commitments and I know when I will not be here Sunny will fulfil my responsibilities”
Sunny was left with tears in his eyes by his father’s sayings.

-What Dharam ji said has some meaning. Hindi film industry does not work with or for the actors. Stars always do matter there and stars mean, who are able to fetch money on the box office for the producers and distributers. They may be perfectly wooden faced actors but if their films are able to draw some cash then in the dictionary of producers and distributers they will always score over aDilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Sanjiv Kumar, Dharmendra and even Amitabh Bachchans…… Here Guru Datt and Raj Kapoor recieves no welcome when their one film is dumped at box office.

Dharmendra started doing some awfully bad films right from the mid 80s. Though in the decade of 80s very few good films came out of Hindi cine industry. In the late 90s he fell ill and disappeared from the scene. When he recovered from his illness then there were no takers for this super star of yester years who ruled not only box office for more than 3 decades but won hearts of both audience and critics.

Perhaps Dharamji was hinting towards this in his saying that Sunny was trying to resurrect his (Dharam jis)acting life.

Earlier even it was said that Raj Santoshi would make a film with all the three Deols. Sunny has been saying for some time that he has been searching a story which can assimilate all the three Deols.

Recently when IIFA rendered special award to Dharam ji, he became very emotional by introductory remarks of Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny seemed more emotional than his father and when he started speaking he was filled with tears. Bobby even could not speak a word as he started crying. Dharmendra guessed moments before that Bobby was unable to handle the emotions and it was a cherishing moment when handsome Dharam ji with a charming and fatherly smile on his lips, came forward and took Bobby in his arms and Bobby broke down and said only one line” He is the best”.

Now about “emotional responsibilities” –

with all due respect to Dharam ji and as its his most personal matter, a hitch is there to mention this factor but hope it goes well.

When Dharam ji had entered in to the films in late 50s, he was not only married but had a son also, named Sunil Deol. Later Dharam ji fell in love with the dream girl, Hema Malini and subsequenly this affair ended in to their marriage and Hema ji became second wife of Dharam ji. Sunny should have been atleast 23-24 years old then. Its not possible that this second marriage of his father did not create any trouble in the Deol family and did not create any tension between him and his father.

That all come under personal matters of the family. But most probably Dharam ji was talking about this emotional responsibility only.

Coming back to saying of Nana Patekar that Sunny Deol cant act in the role of a hungry man because he does not know what hunger means?

Given real life circumstances it can be said safely that Sunny knows emotional conflicts very well. It seems that his character in the “Apne” has some emotional differences with character of Dharmendra, who plays Sunny’s father in the film.

How Dharam ji and Sunny have tackled emotional conflicts, and reconciliation on the screen can be the most striking aspect of“Apne”.

Eyes of good actors never speak lies and there will be interesting scenes in the film where father and son have to oppose each other. Dharam ji has been actor of all shades. Sunny has shown his skill in characters following rebel feelings. He was very good in Arjun.

Apne” can be as good or bad film as anyother film but there should be some weight in the scenes where Dharamendra’s and Sunny’s characters interact with each other on emotional level, and emotions can be positive or negative. Film can be criticised or praised later when its seen, but reasons are there to watch the film.

And hope some day we see a film which features all the actors belonging to Deol family, Dharam ji, Sunny and Bobby, Abhay Deol, Hema Malini, Esha and perhaps film can be directed by Ahna Deol who is said to be interested in direction. :)

Dharam Ji has to taste success through this film. Mr Bachchan has been quite active in the films and if Dharam ji also becomes active then Hindi films also can explore the area where stories related to aged characters can be shown.

Another reason is more personal.

Years ago in early 80s, Dharam ji had come to shoot his film in my small city. We got to know he was shooting at a bridge on the river which was less than 1 km away from our school. One of our classmate had his residence at the bank of the river and his house was hardly 100 meters away from that place where Dharam ji was shooting. We somehow managed to escape early from the school and reached his home. We requested his elder brother and convinced him to go with us. He was preparing for his exams but he went with us and we reached at the spot. Hundreds of were already present and film unit was busy in arranging their equipments. Police was there but when Dharam ji came from other side of the bridge, crowd started approaching him. Policemen were not many in numbers but crowd was not disturbing the work and all they wanted to see Dharam ji from a close distance.

In next shot Dharam ji was required to walk along the river and for this he had to go down the stairs of the bridge and we were standing on the stairs only. People started running towards downside so that they could occupy the most appropriate places to have a close look at Dharam ji.

We also rushed towards the spot. Now people were standing along the length of river so space was more and so we also managed to stand just near the rope. Dharam ji came down and lo behold, he was standing just 5-6 ft away from us, only thing he was looking towards the river. And then he turned his face towards us and said something to one of the unit person. Perhaps he asked him to bring water or umbrella or both as that person brought both the things.

We had seen this face so many times before on the screen and had heard this voice so many times before. And here one of the most handsome man, was standing before us. He looked far more handsome to us in real life than we used to find him on screen. His face was shining and he was smiling towards people gathered to see him. He had certain aura around him and perhaps that aura is still alive in him. He looked a very humble and well mannered man. Crowd was mesmerised by his presence. I had seen Amitabh Bachchan before but his memory was faint and I was told he was an actor named Amitabh Bachchan. But when I saw Dharmendra, till then I had already seen many films of Amitabh and Dharmendra including Sholay and by seeing Dharamendra I felt I had seen both, Jai and Veeru.

Watching Dharam ji in Life in Metro and later at IIFA festival has revived memory about that encounter with Dharam ji and this nostalgia is also responsible behind this desire to watch his next film.

Sid: Its not justification but the most alluring aspect for me to watch the film.

Justin : Yes I wish Dharam ji gets a proper success through this film for some strong reasons

[1] Mr Bachchan’s burden will be reduced in some manners and he does not have to appear in every third film and
[2] this will bring competition in older actors also and thus will improve the status of films
[3] with Dharam Ji’s strong entry, Directors and Producers will consider the possibilities to show films having stories concerning aged people
[4] some money will be diverted and utilized in films having quality actors like Dharam ji and Mr Bachchan and Mr Vinod Khanna rather than on films having no story, actors with no or very less acting ability etc
