Ardha Satya : Silver Jubilee remembrance
25 years have passed since Ardha Satya, one of the most hard hitting films of hindi cinema, was released and it still possess so lively and relevant presence that if its re-released today then it still may score above many films of present days.
This path breaking movie had paved the ways for several films made in the later years. It has inspired several directors to follow something or other in their films.
Not that nothing has changed in the country or in the world or as such in the life on earth. Advancement has ushered there in every field of life but along with this advancement, especially in science and technology, every field of life has become more polluted also. Even in the field of corruption, we have become more corrupted than the past. Society?s problems and pathos have been increased multifold. Nexus between mafia and politics has become more strong than what was shown in Ardha Satya.
Then mafia was contesting election to become a member of the corporation of a city only while now mafia guys have occupied the places to sit not only inside the state assemblies but they now add their ugly existences in the interiors of the national parliament also and we all are witnessing the continuous decay in values. We get up, read/see something and spend time of day somehow and sleep and things go on and on in such a sleepy way only.
We have somewhere accepted our own limitations that nothing can be corrected. We have been defeated to that extent that ?Paurush? word has been reduced to one meaning only and that is ?sexual power?.
Ek palde mein napunsakta,
Ek palde mein paurush,
aur theek taraazu ke kaante par
ARDH SATYA
It seems that in the last 25 years, palda of napunsakta has become more heavy with more burden of bad things on this side and it is going down and down while paurush palda is going up and up and one day it may happen that it will become so light that it will be forced to take a jump and will fall down crossing the head of the needle on which Ardha Satya has been resting and then whole of the balance will fall down in the direction of napunsakta wala palada making a deep dig in the chest of earth.
When things have not improved in last 25 years then why to remember Ardha Satya?
Because inspite of increasing corruption all over in all the areas, still there have been few honest souls living in all these past years who have tried to bring good changes in the areas wherever they have worked. Inspite of all the bad things happening in the world, few good people, though in absolute minority, are living here and there and who may want to pursue their honest crusade against the evil and such films are to honour those honest people. And such films are there to analyze the situations prevailing in the society and they should be remembered again and again.
Its unfortunate for those, who have not passed through the experience of watching this psychological drama. Don?t know what help Lagaan might have brought to the management class rooms but Ardha Satya certainly can bring many analyses to the class rooms discussing the human psychology.
Film is one of the most complex films ever made in hindi cinema and carries several tracks intermingled with each other in all possible directions.
Not only film?s title have words Ardha Satya ? Half Truth but whole film presents the facts screaming about a hypothesis that nothing, especially man made things and man thought things, belongs to absolutely truth. We the humans know partial truths only as we have got understanding that is based upon partially true factors only.
Its not easy to discuss Ardha Satya as its not easy to describe things in small paragraphs as parallel tracks have importance and things are not uni- dimensional/directional here.
Nobody is hero here as such and if there is a hero then he too has too many flaws and does bad works also due to his limitations and compulsions to do compromises in order to survive in the police force.
Film strongly suggests that writers, by writing such films, and directors, by making such films, fulfill the duty of being responsible citizens of a nation. Film presents the real situations and how characters have to face them and suffer and how its not all filmy in the life.
Ardha Satya reveals very clearly the slow death of an individual because of the cruelty of a corrupt system. An individual has to die daily because he is alone and majority of people either bow down before the allurements of the corruption or they become mute spectator of happenings because they fear the outcomes of protest and corruption swallows the major portion of the system and makes difficult the jobs of honest people.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne se pehle,
kaun tha mein aur kaisa tha,
yeh mujhe yaad hi na rahega.
Chakravyuh mein ghusne ke baad,
mere aur chakravyuh ke beech,
sirf ek jaanleva nikatta thi,
iska mujhe pata hi na chalega.
Chakravyuh se nikalne ke baad,
main mukt ho jaoon bhale hi,
phir bhi chakravyuh ki rachna mein
farq hi na padega.
Marun ya maarun,
maara jaoon ya jaan se maar dun.
iska faisla kabhi na ho paayega.
Soya hua aadmi jab
neend se uthkar chalna shuru karta hai,
tab sapnon ka sansar use,
dobara dikh hi na paayega.
Us roshni mein jo nirnay ki roshni hai
sab kuchh samaan hoga kya?
Ek palde mein napunsakta,
ek palde mein paurush,
aur theek taraazu ke kaante par
Ardh Satya
Ardha Satya could easily be termed as most successful film, coming out of parallel cinema movement/ or belonging to art house productions, on the BO. Sometimes its just a matter of time. A time demands certain kind of story and if that story comes before the people, they welcome it with open hearts.
Thanks to sensible creators like Govind Nihalani, SD Panwalker (author of story Surya), Vasant Dev, Vijay Tendulkar who created this first on the paper and later on the celluloid with the able help of Renu Saluja who edited their creation in such a wonderful way that film has become almost timeless.
Dilip Chitre?s poems ably support the theme of Ardha Satya.
Kriti ke pehle aya hua vichar
Aur vichar ke baad vali kriti
Inke darmiyan ahuti jo meine dee
Jin jin kshanon mein bhul gaya tha deh bhan
Jin jin kshanon mein ulajh gaya tha kriti mein
Unhee kshanon mein mujhe dikhayeee dee
Tumharee sambhavnaoyn kee sampurna akriti
Ho chuki hai ab meri kriti puri
Aur tumharee akriti bujhh gayee

I totally agree with you RK - this is a landmark film in Indian cinema inspiring many of today’s so called underworld special directors. Also to be mention is brilliant performance by Om Puri and cinematography by Govind Nihlani.
Also to Rk - Brilliant Article but i wish you could have discussed some aesthetic and techniques involved in the film but nevertheless a good article.
Great Going RK.. Keep them flowing!!!
Ardhasatya to me is one of the most impactful films of our times.. it delivers a hard hitting punch on the viewer and leaves an everlasting impact for life.. not many films (have seen thousands) have left that kind of impact on me…
one of the major factors of Success of Ardh Satya (specially commercial success) was Sadashiv Amarapurakar’s portrayl of Rama Shetty.. a never before role of the villain played with great style and power..The character was the talk of the town when the film got released.. gave birth to so many rama shetty’s on cinema subsequently but never after as impressive as this one..
Agree with Pawan. Rama Shetty is probably one of the best anatagonists in the history of Hindi cinema. Though he doesn’t have very many scenes, his spectre looms large all through the film. That was the power of the performance. It’s sad that Sadashiv Amrapurkar could never repeat that after this phenomenal debut.

@Shashank (1),
Thanks for your comment.
Wait, this is just preface, I was just getting charged to recall the film. Substance (of the film /about the film) has to come in coming days depending on the time availability etc.
Not following the things in one single post as it will be quite long so will distribute things in few separate posts.
@Pavan,Aditya, Krishn,
Rama Shetty is on his way and should come out sometime today
@Phoenixnu,
Keep “Thand” man. as mentioned in comment 8, this was only appetizer before different dishes are served to the main course.
Why you do blasphemy of watching two good films back to back? Ardhasatya itself deserves back to back watching.
There is no claim that you will get something new which you missed or you dont know or something new about its making but as always its a trial to share with lovers of the film. Its to enjoy something common and when we enjoy such thing then joy comes from the sharing things with a energy. Such joyful sharing connects people, friends etc and for sometime many sing in same sur. Thats the only motive and will be.
Hope you get your seat on this musical chair ride.
@Krishn(7),
Sorry, not giving translation or any explanations of the poems now, but you will get their meaning in following posts because they are connected with the life of Anant Velankar (Om Puri) and they represent some situations of his life so you will be able to get them.
wait
@krishn(8)
