Arrey….Isne Toh Biriyani Jalaa Di…….
Sulakshana Biswas | Movies | January 31, 2009 at 8:09 am
PrintBy the first half of the film I was convinced that this is going to be a superb film and the film would do justice to the pre-release hype. Well, it had everything to make the film so. A stellar cast, rave reviews….and Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut. She cooks it up well….
At least that’s what I thought by the first half……
The tale of two souls lost in the boulevard of broken dreams….called Bollywood. Where one survives by dictates of destiny…..luck makes or breaks one’s life and living. A premise arresting enough to keep me glued to the screen. It did…..till the first half…….
Farhan Akhtar is the next big thing…..It’s Rishi Kapoor’s milestone performance…..The film is the coolest debut by a director….duh…Zoya….why did you have to overcook the biriyani…..???
The rags-to-riches story…..the struggler becomes a superstar by chance…..he is manipulative…..he cheats on his girlfriend ….has flings with the Diva and her daughter……and the typical(with background score)realisation…..that he was wrong………Gosh….and i thought all realisations were personal….i mean do you really need the entire film industry, the Badshah to make you realise that you had been a jerk? Why that come-baby-eat kinda spoonfeeding???
Farhan is stiff, as an actor. Konkona is brilliant. Isha tries….but there is no consistency as far as the portrayal of the character is concerned. Dimple Kapadia and Juhi Chawla are refreshing…..so is Hrithik in his bit role. Others i dont want to mention.
The music is good, the cinematography is good……..gawd….i think I’ll end here…..too much distaste in my mouth……

Was just having Biryani btw. Badshah who? film industry who? Who cares. LOL!
loading...
You guys don’t get the film which is a shame but I kinda suspected that it might not have a broad appeal. I’m just curious if people who hunger and clamour for good hindi cinema and don’t like this film, then exactly what kind of films would appeal to you ?
loading...
Guess Why? Cuz non-filmy junta, which are Crores more than the filmy ones get to see and know at least a part of something they get somewhat entertained with. That’s why!!!
loading...
eheh Lol..
RR, kuch likhe tab na…
kids these days!!! p a t h e t i c!!
i guess every biriyani cant be a JTYJN one
loading...
I think kids these days are so used to microwaved biryani that even if Ghulam Qureshi himself were to cook it they won’t be able to digest it.
loading...
OVERCOOKED? OVERCOOKED? god!!
Sulakshana, can you please let me know, how could the biryani have been cooked right, in this case of LBC? I am open for a debate/iscussion here. Moreover it kinda doesnt seem right that you are accusing something about the film with headline and then dont dive into it by explaining it..i say it is under-cooked!!
loading...
I would have liked her to write a bit more, but what the heck i’ll talk on behalf of her…
overcooked as in, she(the director) went on and on and on with the same kinda jokes/parodies from the first half, surely those who are living that life this would seem different, for them AK trying to correct an actresses dialect, ISHA’s nakhras etc etc all are going to seem very real. they wont get bored with it…its sort of watching your own life being played on screen. but for those outside, it really looses interest after a while.
I would have loved if she(the director) had given more attention to developing characters than making statements about the industry
loading...
Mitch
You are absolutely right. This film will never connect with junta like DCH did because its an inside story. DCH connected to every kid because if it was not about them the kids wanted to be like DCH.
Even though LBC is a much much more deep film.
loading...
RR
Which character did you want them to develop more?
Farhan? Konkona? Rishi or Dimple?
They were absolutely perfect. All of them.
Didnt the last two scenes make you film that the film has just made a quantum leap to a league of its own?
loading...
MAINAK,
farhan, farhan’s roommates, konkona, the assistant choreographer, rishi kapoor, konokona’s agent. they were all spot on. i could relate too them, where as JUHI CHAWLA, ISHA SHARVANI, BONEY KAPOOR, every actor in the guest appearances except hrithik appeared mere caricatures/ parodies!
i’ll draw an example of a very recent film, which doesnt have anything similar to this one, in OLLO one feels they know almost everyone starting from the guards in the police station to they people getting robbed by lucky…they (the police officers etc) could easily have been sketched as caricatures of their real life counterparts but they were not….now thats great screenwriting aint it?
there were moments in the film that stayed with me, konkona and farhan sleeping on that torn sofa in the open, farhan lashing out at konkona about the magazine, konkona staring at the empty refrigerator, the fight farhan had with his friend, the acting class..though i have never been in one, it felt as if this is very much what it is gonna be like, the amazing scenes starting and finishing the film.
loading...
@RR,
wht Bull…
dont make blanket statements for the outsiders..
IM soo totally outside it all and it didnt matter whether the story was ‘real’ or not .. the execution was brilliant!!
more character development??? u want a movie which is all character driven to be more character developed? matlab are u asking to put in a detailed back shhtory for each character?
loading...
U say the characters are parodies without ever having been in the setting where these characters actually exist. When you watch Fatih Akin’s films, have you ever been to Turkey or had a Turkish girlfriend ? If no then how do you know that the characters in Head On are real or parodies ? When you watch Saving Private Ryan are you better equipped to judge whether the opening scenes were real or not or are the actual veterans the better judge. If you didn’t get the film it’s not the film’s fault but rather your limited knowledge and perception of the subject matter.
loading...
I had the fear to feeling like you are feeling right now after I saw the trailer. Juhi, Sanjay, Rishi all seemed over the top.
But when I saw the film, they were not. Because people in Bollywood are over the top. Thats why they are who they are.
And every character has scenes that redeem themselves. Not a single character was evil in the film. Not even Farhan’s. Thats the genius of this film.
loading...
It didn’t live up to the reviews it received but it was just about… a good film.
loading...
I think “caricature” is a buzz word here. Filmi people portray caricatures of themselves…if they dont..they wont be what they are. I dont think Zoya even once wanted to portray the industry as an industry of actors, rather n more accurately she wanted to portray an industry of superstars. N superstars are caricatures!! they r over the top, exaggerated and most times their talent is exaggerated in their head. The character of farhan doesn’t strive to be a great actor, rather a superstar. Hence there is no need for character development in the case of the various filmi junta infused into the film…they were supposed to be caricatures.
I haven’t watched the film yet…but I guess I’m gonna go in lookin for great execution…coz this aint a great story to tell anyway…the story in itself doesn’t move anyone coz it doesn’t have a wider perspective. Yes ambition has a connect across the board…but IMHO I’d jst watch a good movie n enjoy my popcorn…isn’t dat what films r made for in the first place?
loading...
Sorry whats this review about??? Looked like grafitti to me. U just seemed to have written this in a hurry. Not expected from a featured writer.
loading...
characters are absolutely spot on.. you want to see one , i will show you ten people like those characters.. that is eaxactly what you didn’t get.. the scene where i m saying murder is the scene where you see the frustration of a writer who is constantly changing his lines to suit the untalented kid, and that is true for everyfilm.. the irony of that seen, where sanjay kapoor says, chaaku chal gaye, i hear it so many times…. they are more real than most that you see.. put forth some conclusive statements.. because both your arguments RR and Sulakshana says you have no clue about how it works behind the scenes.
loading...
Anurag, your cameo was awesome, loved it and whistled in the theatre when you cam on screen and got a shhh from a sardarji family sitting in front..lol!!
Your scene had so much irony to it, not just from the writers pov, but also to those who do great cameos and then get lost somewhere, i felt their was an uncanny resemblance to the macmohan scene and your cameo..it is very scary damn scary sometimes..
The seduction scene of isha was a masterpiece, hands down the best scene of the movie( arrghhh donno, their are plenty more)..she cud have easily done the seduction in the whole stereotypical bollywood style, but, no..that just doesnt suit isha character their..and hence i soo loved it..plus the camera movements in that scene.my god..i need to stop gushing here..very very minimal camera movements and let the actors perform the scene..no dramatic cuts, no showing of cleavage, etc, cliche’..just let the actors perform…i salute Zoya for this…I LOVE YOU ZOYA!!!!!!
loading...
@Sulakshana ,@RR
How many people have famous directors/producers as friends or acquaintances ? at least I don’t have one ,Zoya being an insider to the industry ,i’ll take her word for it and Anurag himself verified that ,so the debate ends here ,unless you guys wanna add some of your own experiences with famous directors and producers.
loading...
For me the biryani was perfectly cooked ,it may not become a blockbuster as it does not relate to our everyday lives and many won’t be able to connect to it but the movie making was flawless.
It’s one thing to say that you connected with the film and another to objectively analyse it.

@mitch
did you read my post or just scrolled down to vent your anger on people who dont agree with you????
i think i made my point very clear here:
“Why that come-baby-eat kinda spoonfeeding???”
we as viewers dont need that …..that ought’ve been more subtle.

LOL! This is hilarious. ‘you kids won’t get it’ logic. Never ceases to amuse me.

If your film appreciation skills are any indication of your cooking skills then I’ll stick to the biryani that I get to eat at Oz’s place. Leaving that aside you contend that the film is spoonfeeding and since you are studying media indulge me and give me your opinion on how the narrative should have worked. In fact I’m sure you access to editing facilities. Why don’t you re-edit the film according to your sensibilites and we can judge which would have been a better version.

@ Sulakshana hahahaha
what was judgemental and personal about what i wrote??

Sulakshana..now that you are here, can you point out those “spoonfeeding” things that you didnt like, and tell how could have better’ed it? It would be a constructive game for all of us, i will do my best to say why the scene was there and why other things “might ” not have worked.
Agree?

i had a problem wid……..” that come-baby-eat kinda spoonfeeding???”
now do u guys get it……..

say wat…..i’ll give u an eg of how a realisation occurs…..i mean the kind which is neither loud nor underplayed……..
a lonely wife, dressed beautifully….enters the well furnished living room….she goes from one part of the room to another…..stopping by a piece of furniture here and there…..she stops and sighs….all this while there wasnt any bgm……as soon as she sighs a melancholy music starts….
the music starts….as soon as the realisation starts….
(the film- Satyajit Ray’s “Charulata”)
loading...
@33
ha ha…
No you don’t need to visit a brothel to watch a film like Chameli and comment on it ,however if I were to talk about the portrayal of a prostitute and her characterization with absolute conviction I would put a disclaimer tag on it saying that I don’t know much about it.
loading...
No Sulakshana wtf is “that come-baby-eat kinda spoonfeeding”…
kindly elaborate…
loading...
“wen did i comment about the narrative/the editing?????i had a problem wid the content”
LOL. That is the most hilarious comment I’ve heard in a while and brilliantly illustrates where you’re coming from. Do you even know what narrative means ? Anyways thanks for that last comment. I was getting riled up over nothing. Stay Happy.
loading...
btw….the realisation thing was the fact that charu…was merely a furniture too in the house….
just incase some people needed spoonfeeding
loading...
now if there are people who’ll complain….ooooo she loves to stay in her “art-film” world (i never understood the criterion for the distinction)….well…..here’s another one:
Kay Kay Menon stands with a cup of chai…..on a pavement….a moment earlier his father was educating a boy….about the Bhagvad Gita….he watches people of all castes and religions….working together, they are friend with each other…almost as good as brothers…..
he realises….he had been wrong as the orthodox being…..phobic of the minoroty community…..a hater of the people in question…..as soon as the realisation starts…..the rainfall starts….(i am not even mentioning…Paresh Rawal’s Tukaram Patil’s rendezvous with him the previous night)
(the film- Nishikant Kamat’s “Mumbai Meri Jaan”)
loading...
@Dpac, Om….
farhan akhtar….realises….after the wqhole industry realises his mistake, his BIG mistake…..everybody makes him realise that too….and then like a good boy….he goes to apologize….the film would’ve worked for me….if those parts were not there …..the audience is not so thick that they wouldn’t understand the irony of the situation where…..Koko’s character made the sacrifice for a person….who had deceived her…..
what zoya did in dat film was spoonfeeding the audience….
hope i make myself clear enough
loading...
I think you may be on to something here Sulakshana. but communicate nahin ho raha hai..

try again
loading...
yes Sulakshana but i dont quite recall the film as you saw it. so even that arguent doesnt hold any water. Nobody makes him realise nothing. he just went on a quilt trip and KoKo character promptly and properly put him back in his place…
yeah if they got back together with a impromptu love song running in the bg i would understand ur jala hua biriyani… otherwise.. u need better arguments..
loading...
Sulakshana..dont you think the point where Farhan thinks he has made a mistake( which again is debateble), is the point of redemption of KoKo which was not spoonfed?
How would you better it Sulakshana? How would you show the whole thing, if it were you? Meaning how would you end the movie? And coz now maybe we are discussing the climax..lets add spolier alerts for the beefit of others who havent seen it..
loading...
spoonfeeding
the definition in the context-
1)FARHAN asks his friends to leave, he says he’ll meet them later. SRK looks at farhan, farhan looks into his eyes and realizes his mistake, he is a bit ashamed. scene ends here, the message is conveyed.
BUT hey, the writer goes on to write and waste a painful five minutes with srk rambling how you shouldnt forget those who were your friends before success
2) we know Ishaa and and her both are flirting with farhan, its been implied earlier. we know dimple doesnt like ishan to hang out with farhan, still we have a swimming pool sequence. which is funny no doubt but hey…..
loading...
@om….
i’m not out of my mind….dat i’ll go and remake such a pathetic film…..dude….y all this hullaballoo….this film doesn’t deserve that….
loading...
@vineet
discaimer tag? do u put a disclaimer tag on you before meetin or talking to people?
as you ar clearly not same as everyone
forget brothels, that might comeasy to you
and wtf is so rocket science abt the industryanyways that we need a lame film to spel it out for us
watch THE PLAYER by altman
loading...
OM
the ending of the film was just perfect, FARHAN’S realization of guilt, KOKO’S acceptance of reality
they were exactly how it would have been had i visualized the story. it brought in a sense of completeness, yet didn’t play itself to the gallery.
the problem lies with what the director did trying to arrive at that point.
do you realize we dont have much problem with the film except for certain edits and maybe a tighter second half?
loading...
RR, do u realise thats not what ur post says?
loading...
@ Rusted…impossible!!! What is wrong if SRK advices him..DONT YOU FIND SOME OF YOUR SENIORS/PARENTS/RELATIVES/GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND advicing you? Or does this happen in mars? They are in the same film industry for the christ’s sake and it is very real for a senior to advice a junior not just in film industry but anywhere my man…i love the quote from RDB..sms generation two shadb kya bol diye, bhaashan lagtha hain inko..no seriously..
About Dimple flirting with farhan..you think she was flirting? I am sorry if you think so, you just didnt get it..brother
@sulakshana..whatever you think of the movie, it your opinion..you have every right to it..but, again you are missing the point here, as you missed in the movie..i am not asking you to remake the movie..i am just asking as a viewer to tell me how it could have been better..you dont get the subtle hints and when spoonfed you compalin..ghor kalyug i say,
i am moving on..good luck!
loading...
the film tried to delve in two different boats, it tried to be a parody but hey it also tried being a nice charecter driven drama.
i’ll sight another example, TROPIC THUNDER.
the film is a brilliant no brainer parody on hollywood war films. it doesnt try to be a deep moving drama and it achieves its purpose.
LBC to me had all the possibilities of being one of the most moving drama’s we saw lately. it hit bulls eye for a while and then started missing its targets.
the focus went elsewhere, it was no longer about farhan and koko trying to find each others dream in themselves it was the director passing judgments on the condition and workings of the industry!
loading...
“do you realize we dont have much problem with the film except for certain edits and maybe a tighter second half?”
CAN YOU GUYS EFFING SPELL OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY..IT IS GETTING INSANE NOW..FUCK I AM STUPID, I AM DUMB..I AM AN ASS..I NEED SPOONFEEDING..I CANT TALK IN CODE LANGUAGE…
loading...
@oz
i c u haven’t disappointed me…..
loading...
@om
hahahahahahahaha
loading...
OZ i would absolutely love to read a review from you analyzing it
loading...
@om
wat rick meant was something really simple to understand….but nevertheless….lemme elucidate…..dude!u didn’t need to show the advicing part…..it wud’ve been cool if the scene ended wen srk said….”tum nahi jaoge….and that significant glance…..”it wud’ve been a gem of a sequence….srk didn’t havta go on and on a nd on….and btw om….srk is no close frnd of that actorn(i mean in da film)….so dat kinda advice doesn’t come from strangers all of a sudden…..
loading...
Now u r going into BS territory RR…
the only focus which went haywire by the sound of it looks to be urs …
loading...
“so dat kinda advice doesn’t come from strangers all of a sudden…..”
Sulakshan..believe me it does..it does..i have faced it countless number of times..not from film industry..fuck i dont know anything about it apart from the what the authors of pfc say..but in real life..you do get it on almost a everyday basis..some you take seriously..some you just fuck it..and here farhan did take it seriously..and is this one scene which you didnt like and the film was spoonfed..just this one scene?
loading...
@om….
at dat particular scene it wasn’t required…..
loading...
LBC is also about the people concerned, who is making which special appearance… it’s not a russian roulette… itna stars mila hai, laga doh idhar udhar…. Shah Rukh always treats the industry as a big family… That’s why he did that particular bit and Aamir did what he did (that THOUGHT-provoking scene)… He would always give advice to people even if he is meeting them for the first time… He is like that only and he has never forgotten a single friend of his even after becoming King KHan and that was the irony because Vikram didn’t even give his 2 friends any patta and, of course, the Sona realisation thereafter… It’s a great great film and will go on to be huge… A guaranteed cult!
loading...
I think I tend to agree with Sulakshana on the SRK sequence. A “glare” and silence would be alot more impactful then the whole Bhashan. But then again, you cannot rope in SRK and not give him enough screentime. So in a very subtle way and unintentionally for sure, Zoya actually gives us an insight into how the industry fans star egos.
You wanted Subtlety…here you have it…I’d imagine you can forgive the makers for dedicating an extra 2 minutes now. afterall…this really drives the point in more than the whole movie does!!
This is an example within the making of this movie of what Anurag Kashyap was trying to say anyway through his sequence….Superstar is baap, script,screenplay,editing..sab bhaad mein gaya!!
loading...
@Sulakshana
I didn’t mean that you actually put a disclaimer tag ,you didn’t get the subtle point ,perhaps you require spoonfeeding on this one.
Some depictions appeal to us more naturally than others and then we naturally interpret them as being true without looking inside or into it ,and many times our conviction becomes so strong that we shut our eyes and fail to look at anything else.
A case in point being “Saving Private Ryan” which became a benchmark for me as far as war movies are concerned ,so much so that I thought that the Indian depictions are untrue and over the top.
Some of them are like the ones in Border and LOC are actually over the top ,but after talking to some people from the forces I understood that our traditions of valour and war are so far removed from the west that the depiction of Indian Soldiers as a person who is forever ready to sacrifice himself on the front didn’t seem so over the top anymore ,and this POV was reinforced when I read the eye witness accounts of 1965 ,71 and kargil wars.after all it wasn’t for no reason that Hitler remarked “give me Indian soldiers and I will conquer the world”
So please don’t give me the shit on some western movie by any guy ,I am sure he was great and the movie would have been great too but using it as a ruler to measure our very own “hindi fillum industry” is utterly stupid.
Zoya is an insider in the industry being a member of the Akhtar family ,and I am sure her views on this count much more than mine or yours ,and so does Anurag’s ,both of em having worked in this line for years.
and yea understanding and portraying people is tougher than Rocket Science ,what you see on TV and magazines ain’t always true.
loading...
I say this with truth and without any malice, but if people base their assesment of your intellect on this shockingly inane and undercooked post, it would be pretty sad. Come on, you can do better than this awfully thoughtless piece.
loading...
U know what, i think this is one of the best acted films i have seen in Indian cinema, be it Dimple Aunty as an aging actress trying to give her daughter every comfort that she never got as a newcomer(understatement), or Rishi Kapoor as a producer who feels betrayed by his own make, or Sanjay Kapoor who never could do anything as an actor, ut thinks he can do shit with direction, or Anurag Kashyap who is like an independant puppet to the Actors, Directors, Producers and even himself.
But i have been a fan of Zoya the writer, but this time , she just did not have the “element of surprise”, that was the only complain i have, nothing else. I don’t know what could have happened if not what happened, but i predicted everything through, and i was right in my own head.
I was expecting more depth from Hrithik’s role after the conversation he had with his secretary in the car, but that was not to be.
And last thing i would like to say is that, i was not a complete fan of SRK-the person, before LBC, but now i will say that I am.
loading...
@Sulakshana
You just don’t get it.
So please stop wasting your energy.
Its not necessary to be in Bollywood to appreciate this film. Especially Konkona, Farhan & Rishi’s characters.
loading...
i personally did not see the film as a satire, which it wasn’t. i don’t get sarcasms easily. perhaps there wasn’t any. they presented the bollywood as it is. the struggling act was just a backdrop. didn’t find farhan convincing. didn’t like rish kapoor. didn’t like any of 60 seconds clips of other bollywood personalities, well, apart from saurabh Shukla. i enjoy subtle films. but this didn’t enjoy it. the film should have been callous. is it an a hollow film?
loading...
i told u not to c it HG…
loading...
i know. i know. should have taken your advice. but. just wanted to see what was all fuss about…. good cinema, best film in decade, best debut, rishi kapoor is legend, etc, etc, etc, etc.
loading...
Sulakshana and RR….yaar..movie film festival ke liye thodi naa hai..commercial movie hai.:)
Just back from the movie and i loved it..it was just perfect.
loading...
I agree with OM totally in this full chain of comments.
Apart from that I think that I liked Farhan’s character, acting and dialogues. It was “very” NATURAL.
I am fedup of the characters of the heroes, in the films of so called “different” directors, who act completely wooden and hide under the skin of some idiotically edited ( fast paced ) scenes-dialogues – which cut abruptly every now and then. Thus they think that they are making some impactful cinema. One example is Abhay Deol in OLLO.
I could see the sincerety of Zoya in developing the character of Farhan, in LBC. Especially Seeing “Akhtarnama”, I find her film taste to be really good.
loading...
I loved the film! Of course there were some journeys I wish I could have seen more of – like his theatre-actor friend’s. But that’s simply because I loved what I was seeing on screen. I have been around production houses, seen auditions, sat in ’story sittings’, seen forms being filled up, been on a set.. And trust me, this is closer to reality than anything we have seen on-screen as far as portraying the film industry and its working is concerned. The film touched upon sooo many things, and without passing any moral judgements. I really liked that – saying it as it is. All the characters were very well-etched. I didnt have a problem with any of them. They all kept me completely hooked. I guess they were more real than most other film characters. Their journeys were well written – KoKo’s, Rishi, Farhan, Aly Khan, Dimple.. We could see the characters evolving on screen, as the story unfolded.
And for me, the most important statement in the film was what Shah Rukh said. An important lesson beautifully encapsulated. Some brilliantly written scenes (the street kids on Hrithik’s car window, Rishi breaking down on not getting Hrithik’s dates, SRK and KJo’s spcial appearences, KoKo sitting in front of an empty fridge – a memory of a time she rather leave behind…)and one of the best opening credits I have seen since TZP. A director to look forward to!
loading...
@Dpac 46
U are absolutely spot on there

Oh my God. Had just read the so called ‘post’ earlier and I felt like crying. Now that i read your and even Ritchick’s justifications and arguments in the comments, I am depressed. This truly feels like the end of the world. Not even a SINGLE reasonable or cogent argument. Pathetic.
I can refute every point you put forward, but like you say, such trash isn’t worth this energy. Really Sulakshana and RR, you are both friends and I have respect for you both and your opinions, but the day this horror got published should officially be marked PFC Fools Day.
loading...
I love Biriyani & I liked the movie too- bilkul jala hua nahin tha.But the write-up appears to be more like a comment on the movie rather than an actual write-up/article!!!

could somebody fill in why there is no follwoup to the scene when Abhi – Vikrams friend also gives his photos, were his scennes edited actually in the film
loading...
ilyas – the pics fell into the loo when the AD, Ankur was taking a piss enroute to the director’s room…the janitor put them in the garbage and that was the end of it…bad luck by chance.poor Vikram’s friend did not get the role. not even a chance to audition.
ya that scene was cut cause the filmmaker felt it didn’t really matter. put the matter up to the director to atleast add the scene in the DVD. Such priceless bit of information missed.

@vasan…
that was super sad man….That fellow had more potential than Farhan for me… my cell once fell into the loo but ye to te to terrible luck ho gaya.
maybe Zoya was looking to do justice only to her bro’s character…
Hope to see more of that guy somewhere.
