Asheem Chakravarty of the Indian Ocean passed away today. Asheem had been in a coma for sometime following a heart attack.
Quitting his career in advertising Asheem was the vocalist for the band and would play the tabla, sarang and other percussion instruments.
Jaideep Verma, who made the documentary on the band, had been updating all of us via facebook on Asheem’s status since his slipping into a coma.
Asheem will sorely be missed by us all, fans of Indian Ocean. May his soul rest in peace.

I read it this morning when band put it in their status message. I was shocked. Came to know through a friend that Asheem did not play in the last show at Delhi and someone else was covering for him.
RIP Asheem. You will be missed. Your music will live forever.

Hmm..they are good. Not the best (or that should be left to an individual – my favs are Agnee so there), but surely a politically motivated and highly talented bunch of musicians.

May Asheem’s soul rest in peace.
And comparing Agnee with IO, you must be a kid I guess.

Can you imagine Kandisa or Bhor or Khajuraho without Asheem’s magnificent voice. In many ways, Asheem was Indian Ocean’s heart and soul. I was fortunate enough to see Indian Ocean in concert four straight years, and to talk to Asheem in person several times. What a colossal loss. My heart goes out to Asheem’s family and the other members of the band.
I hope Indian Ocean continues to flourish. Their music has become an integral part of my life.
