Has it ever happened to you that a guest had overstayed in your house causing chaos to your daily routine ? And no matter how many hints you give , he just doesn’t  want to go . It happened to me once . A guest at my house took our hospitality a bit too seriously & stayed for just over 2 years . He loved having alcohol 24 hours a day & like a camel could stay hungry for more than two days . That’s another small town story where the Hindu saying ‘Athithi Devo Bhavo’ is taken a bit too seriously .  The story is totally different in metropolitans like Mumbai & Delhi where flats are similar & time less . In this period if anybody comes over & overstays , then  there are bound to be issues .

Ashwini Dheer tackles this problem by making a feature film out of  a short story called ‘Tum Kab jaoge Athithi’ by fame writer Sharad Joshi who has written dialogues for Hindi movies & also the serial on Sab ‘Tarak Mehta ka Oolta chasma’  . Although the short story has been adapted into tele soaps before , this is a first attempt at a full length feature film . To the filmmakers credit , they give the writer his due credit by showing his name as an writer whose story has been adapted right at the beginning ( is VVC listening?) even though most of the writing  is original .

Before going to watch the movie , I had serious doubts as Ashwini Dheer credibility as a writer had taken a beating with first  movie 123 . . It was the quality of the leads that propelled me to give it a go . Even then I was expecting a low IQ movie where you should keep your brains home & have slapstick humour coupled with sex gags . But I was in for a pleasant surprise when I saw some brilliant quality of clean writing . Yes there are the fart jokes , but apart from that you get to see some great visualization & writing coupled with outstanding performance from the leads . The first half  entertains you thoroughly . From the beginning where We have the voice over of Javed Jaffery informing us about a ‘Praani’ called Athithi &their various minuses to The Funniest moment of the film – a devotional version of ‘Bheeri Jalailye’ . Infact the lyrics are really funny & its been a long time since I have laughed at some lyrics or Hindi Cinema has produced funny lyrics like Padosan . Full marks to the Lyrics writer Irshad Kamil

There is the other genuine funny scene between Viju Khote & Rawal . Infact Rawal is in top form bringing an innocence to his naughty character . There was a time when I had thought this magician of comedy had lost the midas touch of making people laugh . But with Athithi he has proven it wrong & authenticated   that good actors are helped immensely if they are provided with a great story  & witty lines , without them an actor is nothing .(Is Aamir Khan listening?).

But all the genius writing unfortunately vanishes post interval as the film  fails to grip you . As has been the bane of slapstick comedies , the writers have a problem with taking the story forward & then we have unnecessary sup plots & unnecessary preachy stuff. But what  could have been a sad end to a great beginning is saved in the last 30 minutes where we again find some  great writing & direction . The Ganesh Chaturthi scenes are a saving grace coupled with a hilarious end . Thank god , filmmakers are turning to better endings instead of turning over to Priyadarshan style of climax which had been a norm in previous films  .

The background score adds to the fun element as do the cinematography as every frame is well shot Especially the Ganesh Chaturthi scenes bringing a rare amount of realism to it which no other Hindi film had done before

If Paresh is the scene stealer, the other two leads provide great support . Ajay has become very good in comedy , But its Konkana who surprises you with a restrain act . Just love the way she has underdone the Bengali accent thing instead of the normal caricaturist stuff  that we see in Hindi cinema .

Athithi Tum Kab Jaoge is a great attempt at the slapstick genre where surprisingly you don’t have to leave brains at home , as is the norm  . Though it overstays a bit , its still a fun watch

. Ajy Devgan is not a splendid looking man , yet there was a time when he was as popular as SRK thanks to his acting skills.

@proneet, sethu: i am with sethu on this. ajay devgan did not come any close to srk in popularity charts. in fact, ajay was competing with sunil shetty, akshay kumar and sunny deol in the action movies genre
      .
comedy movies just happened to him, by chance. but he is not good in comedies. its just amazing how his comedies have done well although he has not been good in them. checkout ‘ishq’, where aamir stole the show, checkout ‘golmaal’ where arhsad warsi and sharman joshi were fabulous and tushar chipped in too, checkout ’sunday’ where irfan khan and arshad warsi were superb and ajay was just about tolerable. comedy is not his forte, he’s been lucky that the movies turned out well IMO

      Ranbir is reaching for it,

And now you know what “it is” = sustainability

@Nella Bhowmik: [Ajay has proved to be a bankable star] … dont agree at all. lets have a look at his last 5 yrs in the industry:
2009 : ‘london dreams’ and ‘all the best’; he was awful in both
2008 : ‘mehbooba’ [long lost movie that was lying in the cans for a decade, ‘u me aur hum’ he was just about ok but direction was bad, ’sunday’ and ‘halla bol’…he was bad in one and over the top in the other
2007 : ramu ki ‘aag’ and ‘cash’ … need i say more
2006 : ‘omkara’ and ‘golmaal’… while he was good in one, he was bad in the other
2005 : ’shikhar’, ‘apaharan’, ‘mai asia hi hoon’ , ‘kaal’, ‘cash’, ‘zameer’, ‘tango charlie’ etc… apaharan being the only saving grace
        .
so, in last 5 yrs he has hardly had 5 hits and nearly 15 or more releases. so, where is the “bankable star” that u r talking about.
        .
do a status-check before making statements like AK has lost it and SRK is narcissist etc etc …
        .
ajay is just another mediocre actor with a handful of good performances like ‘zakhm’ and ‘gangajal’. he’s plain lucky to be getting those hits

Take Shah Rukh’s movies in comparison -
          2009/10
MNIK – a part of the media is hell-bent on claiming it a hit, the other part is not.
Dulha Mil Gaya – superstar Balaiya screams “SHOULD I SAY MORE!”
Billu Barber – blah blah blah!
          2008
Rab Ne.. – was it a hit of flop?
          2007
          Om Shanti Om – Blockbuster
Chak De – Good Acting, hit
          2006
Don, KANK – Semi hits, although for KANK the same comment as MNIK.
          2005
Paheli – not a hit and a controversial Oscar buzz!

So if you take SRK, a star of THIS stature, he has his share of more semi hits and flops in last 5 years. For the box office he has not worked outside YRF and Dharma, and for the audience he has not worked with them.

Bankability and good or bad acting are two different things – while you may think Ajay Devgn was acting-wise good or horrible in one film over another, it has nothing to do with his perceived bankability.

            .

            • My Dear CRAZY,

Since you have a problem in understanding what my post was all about, let me CLEAR IT FOR YOU IN DETAIL.
Ajay’s choice of movies have been varied – ranging from drama to comedy, and most of his films have been watchable which is why I say he is bankable..the fulfilment of watching a good performance comes through. Akshay Kumar has lost his bankability by selcting movies which require you to leave your brains at home and you come out cursing the movie- which is why I said he has lost his way to win the heart of the audience. Amir has wowed the audience with his choice of movies and that is why I said Amir is “guarding” his sustainability. Shahrukh Khan’s movies are all about himself.. you will find him in every and he does come across as a actor who plays very safe – working only with Karan Johar and gang. he has not tried any offbeat movie lately. which is why I said Shahrukh Khan and “I , me myself”. Saif has touched the audience heart with Omkara and Love Aaj kal but these films are too few and far in between and that is why I said he is still searching his way to make the inroads deeper. Ranbir with his choice of movies- Wake up Sid, Rocket Singh, Bachna Ae Haseeno, etc is on his way to understand what movies will work with the audience.
PLS NOTE I AM TALKING ABOUT TEH MOVIES AS A WHOLE PRODUCT . ACTING PROWESS IS NOT BEING DISCUSSED HERE.
And my comments are purely my opinion of who I am – Part of the audience for whom films are made and someone who keeps aside a part of her hard earned money to watch movies to be entertained. And isnt that a good enough reason why films are made? for us audience?

So my friend when you go on declaring Ajay Devgn’s performances as horrible when talking about his bankability, it has no meaning.

Producers and directors do put money on Ajay for films ranging between 15-30 crores like Golmaal series, All the Best, etc. He lands credibility to the first time directors the way the second class of Khans and third class of Kapoors cannot. May be he will never be in the league of 100 crore movies, but that doesn’t say he is not bankable at all. He is less bankable than Aamir, Shahrukh and Akshay but at par with Saif and Abhishek.

I feel bad for Hrithik because we hardly mention his name as a bankable star despite his giving superhit films, often only by himself. Must have something to do with the gaps between his films..

              .
i am talking pure commerce. what ajay’s movies have earned in last 5 years, akshay has done it with a single movie ’singh is king’
              .
how much did ‘london dreams’ earn? or how much did ‘omkara’ earn. few hundred crores??? NO

              .
i am only contesting the fact that ajay is not bankable as Neellaa is making it out to be; and he is not a gr8 actor or a star

Crazy, no it is not good being sarcastic telling people to watch Ramu ki aag etc. It doesn’t even look funny that way.

3 people are arguing different things with you, you have to address them differently.

Do you think bankable means earning over a few hundred crores, that’s it? Do you take into account the investment?

A Bheja Fry becomes a bigger hit than say, a Blue even if Blue manages to earn 100crores, just because the investment was huge.

Do you think everyone producer is going to be able to invest over 60crores in their movies just so they can take Akshay Kumar or Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan? What happens when the movie bombs like 8X10 Tasveer?

That is where Ajay Devgn and heroes of his ilk come in. They land a credibility to the films at lower price tag. That is his bankability. He does not guarantee that a film would draw in a few hundred crores, but his films recover unless they are total disasters (Cash, for example).

A good return of investment does not always have to be absolutely huge. It can be relatively huge too. A flop like Socha Na Tha hurts the director but does a lot of good to the films that follow, as well as people associated with the film. Would you consider Abhay a bankable star? To me, Yes, if I have something that can milk his potential only from the numbers perspective. He has his own niche, and his films do well in that market.

Read this reply even if you are done with the arguments. A triple bill of Raam Jaane and Guddu awaits you as a reward.

@Tejas: the debate was over from my side, but u have egged me on to write more. let me show the hollowness in your argument
              .
first Neellaa says that he is bankable and even better than srk and ak. so, if he is in the league of these guys [which i dont think he is], then why are u bringing a comparison between ‘blue’ and ‘bheja fry’. i know u r trying to speak the numbers [cost of movie-making] but u r axing ur own feet and let me tell u how
              .
what was the budget of ‘london dreams’? what was the budget of ‘cash’ and ‘kaal’? what was the budget of ‘u me aur hum’ … 20lacs…20 crores…45 crores…
              .
so, how can u say that he is a saviour for small films. what are u talking about??
              .
talking of credibility, what credibility was there in ’shikhar’ or ‘hulla bol’; both of them tanked in the BO!
              .
good return of interest! with 5 hits in years and 15 releases is a good return of interest. in which world? his hit movies put together will not cross 100 crores. and u r comparing him with srk and ak
              .
lastly, u say that i am looking at him objectively. yes, i bloody well am. because the moment i get subjective i will lose the perspective of the debate and bias will creep in; the way u guys are responding with a bias towards ajay and overlooking all his bad work for a few good movies like ‘zakhm’, ‘bhagat singh’ and ‘hum dil de chuke sanam’

Now you are talking my man. You take the whole “discussion” word to a meaning as if it means a bad thing.

              1. I did not say he was a savior of any kind of films. There are no saviors actually, except for Aamir Khan who has not given only one flop in last five year.

A film’s credibility just from the name of stars is only before the film releases, and to draw people’s interest towards that film, even if the other names involved with that film are relatively new. Case in point – Golmaal series, Atithi tum..etc. Whether you like it or not, when a name like Ajay Devgn is added to the starcast, people do expect a certain quality from that film. THAT perceived quality may be different, more or less from that of Khan or Kumar – but is definitely only a notch below.

              2. Re-read my previous comment – whether the ROI is good or bad depends on the investment. Would you make 85 crores on a 80 crore film or 30 crores on a 20 crore film?

And your assessment of Ajay Devgn’s acting power is extremely subjective. You have been saying “He was horrible in X movie”, “He was bad in B movie”, blah blah. If someone counter-argues that you come up with BO numbers from the same movies. I am not able to understand where the connection comes from.

Just out of curiosity, what would you call Amitabh Bachchan? A bankable star?

I said I didn’t dislike 1-2-3 when I watched it on DVD. It was quite funny. It may have not appealed people just looking at the starcast – Sunil Shetty, Tushar Kapoor, Esha Deol, Sameera Reddy – the collection of these names is sure a put-off for one venturing to the nearest hall. Add to that someone telling you half the jokes were about bra and some genuinely bad comedy by Sunil Shetty and you won’t touch the DVD with a 10 feet pole.

It didn’t deserve a theatrical release. These movies work very well on a Saturday night on DVDs especially if you find audience that can laugh not only with the movie but also at it, and at themselves too. ;)

couple of days back i was traveling and picked one of his book(do naak wale aadami). While his satire is certainly superb, at times he writes classic non-sense e.g. aisa nahi hai ki ladakiyon ko dadhi pasand nahi, kuch biwiyan to subah subah apne miyan ki dadhi mein toothpaste laga ke brush kar leti hai.

  8. in certain scenes, i felt awful seeing the way the couple treated Paresh Rawal. assuming that he has no family of his own left, with his wife passing away, just imagine how lonesome he would have felt when he discovered that he was unwanted and no family to turn back to?that scene when he announces that he has booked his tickets, made me promise myself never to behave in such a way specially with elders. Had it been a real troublesome youngster maybe the joy of finally getting a riddance would have been greater

  9. Jahanpanah Jahanpanah says:

Heh! At least this movie made someone learn his/her lesson. I was in the fact more empathized with other male characters particularly with the Satish Kaushik one after what her wife had done. When Devgn says “Biwion ka pati ke bina kaam chal sakta hai lekin bai ke bina nahin” certainly made me think something.
Also, when just before the intermission Devgn defended Rawal, I thought may be they share some past with each other because this complete heart change of Devgn seemed out of character (not totally but still…).
And, I don’t think that people are so mean that they would be happy when it is the question of life and death of a person even if they hate him. In the stampede anybody would have done those things i.e. looking for the missing. So when Konkana says something like “now he has gone but still we aren’t happy” seems inappropriate.

  10. Jahapanah- there is a lesson to be learnt with each experience that we experience daily yet how many of us do that? Everyday it is a battle of rights and that leaves no space to do some introspection. This movie connected with us on a level that is identifiable with all and that is why this movie is a success.. I liked the way Ajay Devgan defended Paresh Rawal during the Mahurat and Hats off to the director for making Ajay stand up for Paresh although he lost financially. I loved the way Paresh bought out his childishness.quirkiness by following Kalia and reminding him of his lines from Sholay.
I loved the way a character is named Putani(I cant yet get over the name)All in all I simply loved the movie

What was that with the name Putani? Devgn didn’t know the name of his own father. I can understand that it may be a nickname but some clarification was needed.

      • The clarification came in the end .. it was a different “Pappu”.. very plausible situation though .. can happen to anyone .. “Putani” hehehe

on Paresh’s character , he maintained that innocence throughout . thats what made his character lovable .yaar dont reveal the end . te movie is running ,. it wil spoil the fun for somebody who hasnt seen it .

jahanpanah ya Putani happens to be a pet name . cant blame Ajay’s character for not knowing it . abt ajay staning up for parsh . that was supposed to be in keeping with the indian tradition of giving respect to your elders

@proneet dutta: i was only responding to the “bankable star” stmt made by Neellaa. dont let personal bias blind you, and thats the reason i listed his movies over last 5 yrs. if u want to turn a blind-eye to it, its ur wish :)

      • hey crazy its not personal bias . there was a time i liked kumar . his choice of movies has made me & his continuous repeat of same roles has made me realize that he can do only one kind of thing . Salman is goodin 10% of his movies where roles are written keeping him in mind . in others he is really really bad . sample Mai Mrs Khanna . his growth as an actor hasnt been anything like the other khan s who started off with him .
ajay has a wide variety of roles where he has excelled & gone way from that intense actor image . all the best or as mudassar put it bhagat singh shows the variety . i thing u r not thinking objectively when u watch him in his movies .

  16. well Proneet, the movie takes most of the inspiration for the situation from Shard Joshi essay,
    “tum kab jaogw, athithi”.
    http://moifightclub.wordpress.com/2010/03/06/read-sharad-joshis-essay-which-inspired-the-film-atithi-tum-kab-jaoge/

Parsai and Joshi do have a lot of similarity in their satires. Going by the current fad in Bollywood for light comedies, Both of them offer a treasure for Bollywood writers.
