This was the biggest IFFLA so far. Last year was a turning point in my life about the art of film-making and meeting the film-makers. They are human.

This year i learnt, they are us.

Meeting Sriram Raghavan, Sudhir Mishra, Kundan Shah, Shashank Ghosh, Sanjay Routroy, Manish Acharya, Shivajee Chandrabhushan, Revathy within a space of 3 days and having lengthy chats with them all, made me believe they are us. They are not some demi-gods who run away at the sight of a cinema fanatic and give elaborated interviews about the face of cinema. They are those who are changing the face of the cinema and believe me quite a few do not like to speak in the press, quite a few do not want their face attached to their name. Fame is not what they are looking for…nope.

This review is the first on the web!

I am not a big fan of Pawan kalyan, nor do i hate him. In fact i did like him in a couple of his movies and do appreciate that he atleast attempts to try something different albeit over-doing himself. The problem with guys like Pawan Kalyan, Upendra and Shimbu is that they take themselves way too seriously. Instead of the movie being event-driven it falls into the nadir of “hero” driven.

It is surprising that the same public will like a movie like Gamyam, Happy days, Anukokunda Okka Roju, where the hero did not actually matter and they do not really care about the “masala mixture”, when it comes to a “Hero” like Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Balakrishna or even to some extent Nagarjuna…they expect the movie to have 30 mins comedy, 30 minutes fights, 30 minutes romance and 30 …

It is not too often that a filmmaker works for the prestigious Theatre du Chatelet. Love him, hate him or just ignore him, but we should definitely give it to him for taking this path which not many have or are given permission to. he will be directing a Ballet-Opera called Padmavati. More about it from here

Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali will direct Padmavati, a 1923 opera-ballet by Albert Roussel, for France’s prestigious opera house Theatre du Chatelet in March, next year. Initially six performances of Padmavati will be presented in Paris from March 14 to 24, 2008.

So, what is Padmavati all about?

Leading a mainly-French cast, Marie-Nicole Lemieux from the French-speaking Canadian province of Quebec will play the title role of a woman who falls prey to a vile bargain, in a lyrical tale set in 13th-century India.

Murgadoss, the director of Tamil Ghajni and the director of Aamir Khan’s Ghajni has been arrested in Salem, when he was coming back from paying visit to the Tamil Writer Sujatha’s Funeral. For all those, who have not much knowledge of Murgadoss, he has worked on two of Chiranjeevi’s movies Tagore and Stalin.

This website says:

A.R. Murgadoss, the super-hit director of Tamil Ghajini was “arrested” while coming out of the house of Sujatha in Mylapore, where he had gone to pay his last respect to the late writer!

Now why exactly was he arrested…here is the funny part…appaerently the producer of Tamil Ghajini was kept in dark about the remake of it in Hindi with Aamir Khan….geeez..the producer Salem Chandrasekhar, now does he live on Mars? The remake has Ghajni has been in news for eons, Aamir blogs about it, Murgadoss keeps giving interviews about it…every Tom …

Any news or anything to do with the great Bachchan family doesn’t interest me an iota. way too much publicity is given to the Bollywood’s first family, so much so that just the mention of Bachchan makes me nausiac. But, for some reason i loved this news…the pairing of AB sr with Waheeda Rehman for Rakesh Om Prakash’s next Dilli 6.

AB sr. has worked with him in Aks and Waheeda did a wonderful job in Rang De Basanti, so now the RDB director has roped in both of them for his upcoming, eagerly awaited next Dilli 6 says this source.

AB sr. and Waheeda had been paired earlier in the poetically beautiful movie Kabhi Kabhi, Mahaan and Adalat. Though i don’t remember much of the latter two, but, Kabhie Kabhie remains one of my favourite from the Yash Raj stable.

Amitabh Bachchan and Waheeda Rehman, who …

Amma Said:
“When a man and a woman move together with love,
mutual understanding, and a willingness to be flexible
to the other’s needs, what develops is not equality
between them, but union - the union of Shiva and
Shakti. That is the world of joy. The man and the
woman become one, forgetting all differences. Each one
makes up for the deficiencies of the other. Through
love, each transcends any anger in the other; and
through forbearance, each accepts the weaknesses of
the other. In this way, both enjoy real freedom.
People need this blending of the masculine and
feminine qualities in life. The feminine power
complements the man, while the masculine power
compliments the woman. In a relationship, each needs
support, encouragement, and inspiration from the
other. They are not a burden to each other, but are
supportive and protective. To achieve this ideal, we
need to understand spirituality. Spirituality helps us
to forget external conflicts and to realize our inner
union, the essence of the Self.

The authors were having a free flowing discussion today, behind closed doors. Talking about the classic songs of Guru Dutt. It brought quite a few nostalgic feelings in me. My dad was always a big fan of Guru Dutt…not to forget that he was a Dev Anand fanatic ……on a side note…isn’t it always that when one of your family member is a fan of someone, you automatically become a fan of that person?…anyways

So, back in 2006 when i had discovered desitrain, i came in contact with one crazily film obsessed guy called kartik krishnan…and we used to discuss cinema online….and this dude, wrote one of the finest pieces ever read by me on Guru Dutt on desitrain, well why the hell am i talking about all this?

Because, i am having a single malt with Haldiram’s Aloo Bhujiya and getting nostalgic about Guru Dutt…why is …

Being the only child, never had the pleasure of growing up with brother or a sister, so had to do with cousins and imaginary brothers. Always wondered how cool it would be to have an elder brother, about 5-6 years older than you, and you following and rooting for him in his adolescent age, where he moves from one aspect of his life to other.
Tried to find that in my cousin who was 4 years younger to me- ruled out.

Tried to find that in my dad- 28 years older than me- ruled out.

Tried to find that in a guy who lives in a hut behind my house-then realized he robbed my bi-cycle- definitely ruled out.

When it was getting really tough for me to find some inspiration in real life, find someone who would try everything that I didn’t know of and …

Kamal Kamaraju, lead actor of Confessions of a Filmmaker sent me this funny story that I couldn’t resist and had to publish for your pleasure.

Dont forget to watch out the space @ Confessions of a Filmmaker website for the June 15th internet release of COF.

Have a look at the poster in the meantime

Poster

There is a slight shift in the mood as we started that evening for the days shoot…there could be three possible reasons

1) Overly stressed routine of the shoot which was now extending into the 24th day

2) I have a clean shave, sporting a moustache.

3) we are shooting some refreshing love sequence as an image sequence…

But no, none of the above were more overwhelming than one important association to this scene..a skirt!!!.. Yes a damn white skirt which was to be worn by the girl.. in the image …

Had an opportunity to talk to Kamal Kamaraju, the lead actor of Confessions of a Filmmaker. As promised i will be bringing in news about the movie. While the Trailers, Music videos, etc are on the way…how about having a one-on-one with the actor himself. Right, Kamal will be here to answer all your queries. Right on this blog, right on this article.

Having said that, i had a conversation with the man himself over the phone, and what a conversation it was. Kamal was off the hook. A pucca hyderabadi…..as Nagesh Kukunoor says in Hyderabad Blues ” once a hyderabadi always a hyderabadi”….Their a peculiar way Hyderabadis pronounce ” Cafe” and nah its not Ca-fey as is the usual norm, we pronounce it ” k-ef”….hadn’t heard that for a long time…..Kamal brought me back those memories…thanks for that Kamal.

confessions of a filmmaker

Why does a filmmaker make a movie?…..to tell a story…to tell something he passionately believes in…to connect to the world with his story..to tell the world what he feels…..are there any boundaries?…..think twice before answering this…..well apparently there are some pseudo-watchmen existing in the Telugu film industry who are hell bent of tearing apart Anish for his latest creation Naa Video Diary’- Confessions of the film maker…there are watch dogs who are eagerly waiting for their new dog-food i.e Anish kuruvilla….

It pains me no bounds to hear that the movie might never be released….it pains to hear that the esteemed Telugu film industry is so sissy that they cannot face a mirror….it pains to see that the Telugu film industry is hell bent on not changing…..here is one man who had the balls to make the movie he made and …

Update: Vijay just mentioned that Kya Tum Ho is Anish’s debut movie: Wow dude…mad props to you

My first time attending any film fest and boy oh boy was that an experience or was that an experience. Met all the who’s who and ” who are you” of the industry. I still pinch myself to make sure that it was not a dream. Ouch it hurts..haha. Though i would have loved to watch a lot more than i ended up doing, but every minute spent at the Arclights or the countless pints of beer at afterparty’s was something i would cherish for a longtime. Had always heard that Film Makers are easily approachable and great conversationalist at film fests and IFFLA proved it right. Be it Anurag Kashyap( He is from mars), Nishikanth kamat( OMG..such a lovable human), Uma D Cunha, Quentin Tarantino, Soumitra Ranade( I am sorry i missed his …

Two viewings of Black Friday….worthwhile…Friday night..took my breath away, maybe more so by the euphoria created by the media and the response on here, after all it was in waiting for more than 2 years…Sunday i find something missing….does it mean the movie dies on you? I have no answer to it….On the first viewing I loved it, but I also felt that there was something missing in the movie which I couldn’t figure it..and blamed it on the slow first half and the Baadshah Khan track ..there was something in the movie which was stopping it from becoming a masterclass…there was something that all the other reviewers missed..or was I just over-reacting and trying to just find the minutest of mistakes? or that unconvincing factor or that something…no idea…..to start with…the DVD version that I saw had a lot of portions missing and also it had a few portions …

Black Friday Screening

7:20 in the evening I am still at my desk. The plan was to leave at 7 and go the fallbrook theater to catch the screening of Black Friday. Me thinking “First we are going to buy the tickets and then we will go to Chili’s and have coupld of drinks and finally the movie”. I wanted to watch the movie when I am drunk cause I notice a lot of things when I am a little high…no matter what kindaa high I have.

The place is 10mins from my office, still I am worried about the availablity of tickets.
I leave office at 7:30, my roommate is joining me and he is also as excited as I am. …
