  • Dil Bole Hadippa: Battered Cricket
Yashraj movies have always been rich in characters, content, colour, Punjabi and social messages (3CPSM). Every farm fresh YR produce makes life look like a fairy tale taking the audience into an world of happiness and love with an utopian impossibility, which cynics, critics and cynical critics brand as ‘entertainment for gobar audience’. What? You have never heard...

  • QGM : Bulletspoof Machismo !
Mind it I saw the Tamil English version of QGM, though intention was to see the Hindi-English version. I was hooked to QGM music for last few weeks and was really keen to identify the hilariously innovative Hindi dialogues in the movie, which were highly enjoyable, interspaced within the songs. For the record, I don’t understand Tamil, not even little little, so to speak...

  • Kaminey: A Ballad Darkly
Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor and the rainbow For me there will be always a difference in experience between watching a film on big screen, on the immediate weekend after its release compared to watching it after reading many reviews, seeing it on DVD. Because of my lack of knowledge, experience and panache to observe the nuances and minutiae of this medium of art and...

  • Luck Stuck and One Smoking Jackpotboiler
There is this particular contemporary Thriller- Suspense genre in Hindi movies which probably started with Kaante. • Sankat City: Love in Underwar
I watched Sankat City at the premier show on 8th July. The brief account of my experience, accompanied by few poor quality celebrity pictures can be read here. What I did not mention there, is that I was sitting beside Aamir Bashir (the other cop with Jimmy Shergil in A Wednesday) and Anurag Kashyap few seats away on the same row. Anupam Kher stood on the aisle and started...

  • Caught in Prosopamnesia
Having a good memory is a pain This is not a review. This is a post about few movies I have seen long time ago and for some reasons could not forget. May be because I was premature ten years ago and the movies were complex for me to decipher, these movies had an unforgettable impact on me. Presently, I can only recollect the basic storyline and remember few isolated...

  • A twist in the tale of two cities: 99 movie review
I have studied, worked and lived in Delhi from 1996 to 2007. I was actually present there in Delhi through 99 and Y2k, when those thick pencil box shaped Siemens and Motorola handsets were launched with incoming call Rs 16 and outgoing Rs 32/ minute. We had to pull out the antenna and walk to a ‘better signal area’ for getting better call clarity. I have also met many...

  • Poetic Liberty or Crazy Songs
The world of Hindi film song lyric is like an ocean of expressions of emotions, mainly love and pain. For years, song writers and lyricists’ deep poetic thoughts with eloquent verses have been creating magnificent tunes which are sung across generations. Such songs are original, melodious, memorable and generally termed as ’good songs’ and often- ‘timeless classics’....

  • Barah Aana : Count you chillar before they change
Last Friday was a deluge of low budget low key movie releases. There were Firaq (Directoral debut of Nandita Das), Barah Aana, Staright, Aloo Chat and Lottery (acting debut of the first Indian Idol Abhijit Sawant). Now, mentally I was still smeared with Gulaal and wanted to watch it again. After much planning and deliberation with wife, we settled for Barah Aana for Saturday...

  • Gumnaam se Ghajini tak :The evolution of Hindi movie titles
To me, one of the best things I like about Hindi movies is their title. As a kid I always tried to guess about the plot, hero and the general reason behind the title. What is the plot of Saudagar ? Why is some are Khuddar but some are Khudgarz ? Who sacrificed what in Qurbaani ? Under what circumstances Albert Pinto ko gussa kyun aata hai ? Obviously I did not have...
