In his reaction to the recent racial attacks on Indians in Australia, BigB has refused to accept the honorary doctorate that was conferred upon him by Queensland University Of Technology, Brisbane. This doctorate was to be presented in July ‘09 for his contribution to the entertainment world. (BigB’s Blog Entry via IBN)

Will the Big B reject any Indian honour if a student in India is beaten up or killed?
The situation is indeed grim! In the past 20 days there have been 5 incidents. There were ~30 such incidents in this 2009 alone, and most of them happened in Melbourne. None of them made it to the MSM here in Australia. Sad but true! Canberra doesn’t want the issue to be given any focus locally, for all obvious reasons. But what’s more sad is seeing the spinelessness of the Indian community leaders. Not one of the so-called Indian organizations has raised its voice and demanded an update on the status, if not justice. Pathetic. A powerful voice like Big B’s helps, and his gesture sends the strong message, point blank. Thank you, Mr. Bachchan!
I think unlike US/Canada/UK, Oz is still not totally exposed to multi culturalism and racial diversity. And the growing rise of non White people there, especially in the urban centers like Melbourne and Sydney is giving rise to the “Pure White race swamped by Foreigners” conspiracy theories, which are like fodder for the Neo Nazi skin head Gangs that roam around.
….
What appals me though is the way some “Indians” have been smirking about how those guys deserved it, and asked for it by going there? Get a life losers is all i can say. No different from those retards, who justify rape saying she asked for it.
“But what’s more sad is seeing the spinelessness of the Indian community leaders. Not one of the so-called Indian organizations has raised its voice and demanded an update on the status, if not justice”
Wb, whats new in it, its been happening every time, and its gonna keep happening.
@thecommutist
there is a difference between being beaten up and being racially abused AB’s rejection of a doctorate brings some much needed awareness about an issue that needs some immediate attention. i fail to see the point of ur rhetorical question.
Yes for majority of the people the issue would be completely unheard of till now.But with AB’s decision to refuse the doctorate, the issue is being heard clearly everywhere.For that aspect itself I certainly appreciate AB for the same.
@ashwini, Sethumadhavan
I agree with the points made by both of you, but is it justified when a news channel flashes headlines like “Is Australia racist?”. I mean, how can they blame the entire country for actions of a handful of retarded morons.
@ the commutist- No I dont feel that its justified if any channel were to flash any headline like that.BTW I’m yet to see the same- but you know that most of the so called news channels these days are in the mood of sensationalising anything.I do not appreciate that.But I’m sure AB did not do this for creating a sensation – he doesnt require to do anything like this for being in the news.
that’s NARROW MINDENESS
just because of some racial rednecks he is generalizing WHOLE country
pathetic i must say
also racism exist in India too infact i saw local goons harssaing female foerigeners and while police constable doing nothing but laughing their asses off
double standard much
what would be intresting if they stop shooting their movies in australia
why don’t they do that ???
i guess they have no problem then
“also racism exist in India too infact i saw local goons harssaing female foerigeners and while police constable doing nothing but laughing their asses off

Racism is bad,period, whether its done by White, Black, Indian or Asian, so lets stop giving ham handed justifications.
…
No difference between this argument and those who argue that females get raped coz they ask for it.
“that’s NARROW MINDENESS

_ Yep and i guess painting all Indians as sex crazy, corrupt maniacs and issuing travel advisories not to go to India, is VERY VERY BROAD MINDED.
Just checked AB’s blog and found that the letter he has sent to the Australian university is very humble. He didnt accuse the whole Australia. We are all disappointed and feel sad for the student who is still fighting in hospital.
The attacks on the Indian students in Australia are certainly regrettable, but these could be isolated incidents that are not necessarily from anby racist intent. No country is perfect, India itself is far from perfect, there are racial problems everywhere.
The disappointing aspect of these attacks is the fact that there has been so much hype and exaggeration in the interest of generating a good story, thus inflaming racial tensions and unfairly so. Before Bachchan comes out swinging against Australia, and lets keep this in perspective, we’re talking about the actions on a very small minority, why doesn’t he take a look at the plight and mistreatment of racially/regionally/religiously factioned groups in our own country. Where was he when Raj Thakeray was beating up North Indians at Kalyan? Where was he when muslims were being burnt in gujurat? where was he when sikhs were massacred in 84? He has accepted awards from China, South Africa, USA to name a few. All these countries have far more serious and deep rooted racial issues than Australia. Tibetans have been treated like dogs under the chinese regime, aahh…but it doesn’t quite hurt Mr Bachchans sentiments that does it.
Could this not happen in India? How many “Madrasis” get ragged to death in a Mumbai, Delhi, IIT,IIM campus?? Why do these stories go unheard? A few isolated events doesn’t quite make a country racist, even so, its too harsh to have a blanket rule and a squinted vision!
Amitabh Bachchan is the biggest superstar, yet he is probably one of the shrewdest and morally haphazard individual in the public domain.
Absolutely be upset by news of violence, especially towards your fellow countrymen, but realise that the problem is everywhere in the world and if you want to take a stand against it then fo it in a positive way and not through hypocracy and ignorance!
