Badmash Banna

Hello everybody

After some great grey cell churning activities I have managed to reach till here. Now till the time that I dont actually get used to it, I would be in constant danger of having spoken out of turn and all that. But it is really a nice platform to discuss things that otherwise fizzle out as soon as the required quota of respectable time in Barista gets over.
There are lots of people that I am sure are extremely intelligent people with some real hardcore views about art in general in our extremely pardoning country, if not that I wonder what a lot of people mite have ended up doing.

Wow, at last I can write with my own being than just being a post cadet. Badmaash Banna is the name of the film that I have written, which is one of the first to have excited me. So, therefore… the name of my diary.

Actually when I look back I am surprised to realise that I would have missed out on so many good things in life if I had not been destined to be an actor. And that too something which one had decided to never get into as I have always thot of it as something to be avoided and to which people generally have the tendency to overhype a talent as blatant as that.
I could see a fantastic production house that i wanted to set up, and i wanted to know everything about everything. And for that wild plan, I agreed to Samir Chanda to join him in Mumbai, it was good old Bombay then. After being an Asst Art Director with him for Sardar Patel, Saudagar, Rukmavati ki Haveli, I became Salim Arif’s assistant in costumes for Chanakya, and then I was Ketan Mehta’s assistant for almost a year.

I think working with all these people in their bleakest points of their career, also was being a deterrent in my ambitions and somehow it was eroding into my dreams. I discovered Prithvi theatre and Makrand Deshpande, who was much better looking then. We immediately hit it off, did some really ridiculous stuff with him, in fact his first prosenium that he did was with me. it is a different thing that I am not a part of the film that he is making on that subject. thanks.

Then I set up my own theatre group called aptly The Actors Syndicate, and I used to regularly direct platform performances. Anurag Kashyap, a really confused soul at that time was one of my actors, and we were rehearsing Bade Bhaisaab, written by Munshi Premchand. And that was the time that there was a huge gossip in the market about this famous director called Bharat Rungachary who was going to direct this serial called Parivartan. Anurag and this other boy, i forgot his name also, some Rajhans fixed up an audition with Bharat and they were going to perform this play for him. I went along to generally set up the place, and in my overzealousness that my actors should get work, I kind of rearranged his furniture in the house, so that their antics would be more effective and left.

To my shock from the next day Bharat started to chase me through different kinds of people and I was adamant about not doing it. I was like, Are you kidding me man , I am not interested in acting. And to cut matters short he once invited me over for a drink and that was the end of my career in theatre, Just could not resist that role of Lalit Ajmera.

Production house gaya gadde mein. Anurag also got a role, he played one of my security incharge later on.. hahahahahaha, we still laugh about it.

Much more to come… I’ll leave you meanwhile with the trailer of my upcoming film… Bombil and Beatrice

    Welcome Prroshant!

Its great to have a talented an exciting actor in PFC. I’m a huge fan of yours. And When I am back in India no matter what script I’m with I will be approaching you. You are one of the guys I want in my film no matter what. Ranvir & You are my favourites.

Badmash Bana? Like the bongs use the word bana?

I have a question. You seem to have done only 8 films in all these years. All indie & exciting projects. I admire that. After the success of Chall & WBHH i’m sure there are lots of trash that came your way.

BTW is that Kaizad film about REBIRTH?

Welcome Prroshant. I saw a rough cut of Bombil & Beatrice last year that Kaizad had submitted to us at IFFLA. At that point it only had the temp music in, and I really enjoyed what I saw. It’s quite an enchanting film for an international audience. In fact we had even selected it for our line up but since Rahman was still working on the score, it would not have made our deadline. I am really looking forward to watching it again with Rahman’s score.

I’m so relieved to read vijay’s positive views on the film. Kaizad had become the favourite whipping boy in Bollywood after BOOM & then the whole accident & death & all that happened. BOMBAY BOYS is one of my fav films & very influential in my life. I hope he bounces back with some good films. He has it in him. Total OUT OF THE BOX dude.

Prroshant do write your experience of working with Kaizad.

    Welcome to PFC, Prroshant!
Is the ‘Banna’ a Rajasthani Banna, as in slang for guru/bhai/hukum/someone influential?

The trailer looks enticing, it shows you in different looks and colors. Looking forward to the film. I would be a little biased as anything that has Rahman automatically shoots to the top of my list.
Kaizad’s name makes it al the more ‘can’t wait’ stuff.

  19. Rahul on August 9th, 2007 5:56 pm

Kaizad Gustad. directed Horrible movie called Boom. it was really very bad. i didn’t expect kaizad to make any more mviews after that. i thought he would get into some other profession and more importantly noone would finance his projects. loks like he has produced this movie bombil and beatrice. saw the trailor of bombil … and my honest opinion is this looks as bad as boom. no point in appreciating something that is bad. time to call a spade a spade.

  20. oz on August 9th, 2007 6:04 pm

Rahul, pass a judgement after watching the entire movie… cinephiles should have that as the first law… maybe one doesn’t get a good feeling after watching a trailer… but don’t judge the movie before you’ve seen it… it’s just plain stupid… the same Kaizad has given Bombay Boys… which was quite good… stop being fanatics about your views…

  21. Vijay on August 9th, 2007 6:12 pm

Yeah Rahul, watch the movie, then talk. Every filmmaker has his/her highs and lows. Don’t make a fool of yourself on a public platform by trashing a film without watching it. PFC is all about calling “a spade a spade”…but only after you have actually seen the spade.

  29. Prroshant Narayannan on August 9th, 2007 11:45 pm

It is amazing how Kaizad has this uncanny knack of being talked about. It is amazing how so many people have the desire in them to really malign people with so much strong intent, bordering almost to the point that if they had the power they would actually want to erase people that they dont like. Well, is that possible? No way.So I guess, one should just wait and watch before getting into really ignorant comments of people who have no clue of what they are talking. Bombil and Beatrice is an exquisitely shot film and I have seen the movie, and believe you me, I was not shocked with the result, as I have always had this belief in him.
my association with him started off with Shashanka Ghosh telling me that kaizad has gone bonkers over you after he had seen Waisa. And as a result I was at the premeire of Boom. It was a fantastic premiere. The film started really late, as most of the guests were plied with some serious alcohol. I dont remember too much of the movie, but from an actors point of view, I thot that Bachhan did some fantastic work in that movie, and i feel it is mostly because of Kaizad. Of course we are talking about his work post the Amitabh that I grew up on. I am sure that this statement mite hurt the “SENTIMENTS” of a whole lot of people, but that is what I feel. If only talkin in a baritone made you an actor then i would rather go with Raza Murad.

Thank you Salim, you have always been a wonderful boss, and you will always remain that, let me know if you need an assistant, i have become more good looking in these years, if you dont mind the competition do take me on. lol.

Kartik, my favourite line in the film could be when i tell KK, ” arre, tujhe gaadi chalaani nahi aati kya? Chala chala be, (and then I get a phone call) The problem was that I did not know how to drive and this was the only way that i could do that phone conversation. But I got obsessed with owning a Tata Sierra, and so I have one, the kinky thing is that it is a left hand drive, and I always feel I am in Los Angeles. Ha hahahah , international stardom, here I come, I am practising driving already.

Thank you Rahul, Shatrughan and Vasan.

Bharatbala’s film is called “The Nineteenth Step”, which has Kamal also in it. Things are being finalised on that front, but I dont see any possiblity of it being shot this year. I just hope I dont lose the interest because of all these delays.

The badmouthing Rahul who is talking without knowing will be forgiven by the Almighty as he has no clue about what he is talking about. After Boom, we were making another film called Mumbai Central which got stalled because our friend lost her life. Keeping that entire trauma aside then he jumped on to make Bombil and Beatrice. If it had not been an interesting script I would not have been there in the first place. And before you talk about anyone ever funding him and all that kind of crap, i too would like to call a spade a spade myself and ask you to grow up. It is alrite, we have all been kids.

Rest of my tirade after a while, as I have to take my dog out.

  30. Mainak on August 10th, 2007 12:23 am

Prroshant did you meet Raoul during Mumbai Central?
I completely agree with you about Amitabh’s amazing performance in BOOM. That was the best part of that movie.
    Muuche hai unki!

    hahaha

Only someone as crazy as Kaizad could do something like that with Amitabh.

Yee razaq tere liye messege hai…. arre jaldi karna time nahi hai mere pas!

Prrashont its amazing your comments are always longer than your post…. I love that!

    cheers

  31. Prroshant Narayannan on August 10th, 2007 12:27 am

now how do we differentiate these two Rahul’s? hahahahahah….The afternoon series was called Farz, directed by an extremely talented Sohail Tatari, i think the next film that i am doing is his first film called Summer of 2007, and Atul Pandey who was one of the big bosses on that programme is also the big boss here, as he is the producer. All luck to them.

Thank you Vijay for saying such nice things, and I am sure amongst all of us here, you and I are the only people who are living to tell the tale that it is a really cool film. In fact Kaizad wants me to spend a couple of days with Rahman, once he is back from LA, to do a few lines of singing and all, am really looking forward to that. Don’t you think that would be the coolest. lol.

Mainak, I would like to speak about the experiences on Bombil and Beatrice baari baari se. Would like to start with my all time favourite Chhal. Hmmm, come to think of it all are my all time favourites, perks of doing less work I guess.

Hansal Mehta, hello, how are you. Get ready , you are going to be written about soon, you famous man !! lol.

Anuraaaaaaaaaaaaaag, hhhaaaahahahahahahah,,, that is what an elephants memory is all about.. and the memory that i have is nothing to write home about. I don’t know wether I have ever told you this, but I was the happiest when you got even that role. It just meant some more money between all of us, as even the leads like me were being paid a thousand rupees per episode. And Gurpreet Khurana was always better looking than Lalit Ajmera. lol. Imagine , even my sister had a crush on you.. wanted to slap her, hahahahaha..lol

  34. Utpal Borpujari on August 10th, 2007 2:30 am

Hey Prroshant (I still am confused whether I should add two ‘r’s or two ’s’ in your new spelling of the name, and have to check it out first not to misspel it!), great to read your stuff here on PFC.

Florian was gaga about your performance in Shadows of Time when I interviewed him during IFFI in Goa three years ago. And I agreed with him fully, though I think the film had several elements that were targeted at the Western audiences’ notion about India.

Why don’t you share your experiences from that film, as all the time we are talking only about Chhal and WBHH-II.

  35. chahat kapoor on August 10th, 2007 3:46 am

    :)u r awesome ……………

  36. Prroshant Narayannan on August 10th, 2007 4:48 am

Thank you Utpal for bringing up a conversation and that too about a film so close to my heart. Shadows of Time, is this German film made in Bengali by florian gallenberger who has already won an Oscar for a Mexican film tht he made called “Quiero Ser”. My co actors in this film are Tannishtha Chatterjee, Irrfan Khan and Tillottama Shome. Soumitra Chatterjee and Sova Sen are also there.
The first time tht I got a call for some screen test, i thot someone was pulling a fast one, and in any case I was just coming back after a gruelling outdoor of Mudda, and the camera was the last thing tht i wanted to be in front of. So I ignored them for some 4 days, then again deepika gandhi who was the first ad on the film called up and I landed up in Sun N Sand for the screen test, I was there the whole day, and had to do a couple of scenes with different actresses and all.
I have this severe fear of auditions and screentests, and I am never sure of what the hell I am doing at that point of time.
That is the same way of what i feel about rehearsing for films, it just kills me. The first 10 days of rehearsals with Florian had me and him in a state where i was on the verge of being told to get lost, and vice versa of course. But Norbert the producer made things amicable, and it just ended up as one of the best things that I have done.
Lots of memories on that film, especially my learning Bangla and losing some 12 kgs for that film in a month.
Actually one star type from here even published it in one filmy journal that he has already signed the movie. I threw a fit, and an apology was sent to me. When i asked Florian personally about the incident and wether they had ever considered him for the part, they all had a great laugh. They all thot he looked like a Pehalwaan, instead of a carpet maker. hahahahah, serves him right !!! God, he would have really messed up the movie.

Thanks Prroshant for defending Boom. I always thought that it was a whacky funny movie with great dialogues. Amitabh’s only worth mentioning role in last decade and one of the few to his credit in his whole acting career :d (just to see more comments). Jackie was funny to the core. I liked the dialogue-baazi between chote miyan and models…
    M: how can you ? J: how can I what ?
M: Keep a woman under your table ?
J: She has got a name. Pavitra
    Pavitra: Haanji :D
Most of those who didnt like Boom was because AB is shown as a lecherous don and they couldnt digest the fact that AB mouthing “unki to muche hai” and pushing girls from his limo :D

Just saw this film which is apparently going to resurrect hockey in our country. Very progressive thought.
Just saw a lot of reviews on it which said so many wonderful things about it. I disagree.
Ours is a country where in the local trains, even after having four people sitting on a three seater, you still adjust for the 5th person, koi baat nahi, adjust karlo aap”. Very regressive.
I am a sportsman myself, have played badminton for Delhi state. I understand basic fitness. Apart from a couple I did not see fitness, nor capacities of wielding an hockey stick which I could call authentic. Don’t tell me that nobody noticed the stark differences when we were seeing the other hockey players.
Or if I am supposed to understand the trauma of a designer wear specialist, sorry coach. looking oh so good all the time, in all the correct angles, Tag Heuer, black shoes,Ray Ban’s, formal wear et all..i am just surprised, i am not moved.
I think we all lack heavily in the art of subtleity. The entire title sequence, with SRK’s pictures being splashed and the outcome of it, their having to leave the house, was so badly treated, and so loudly, that my trauma began as soon as the titles got over. The girls really saved my life.
It is not foreground music, please for God’s sake, it is called background music.
In three months, winning the World Cup can only be made into a film, and that too only in a film like this.
I truly enjoyed Ab Tak Chhappan, I am just feeling very disappointed, as I really dont look up to too many directors.
I am in love with Shilpa Shukla, the haryanvi girl, and Anjan Shrivastav.
CDI Cliches, Depart India !!!! lol

  50. Indraneel on August 12th, 2007 12:56 am

Prroshant..with SRK one has to agree to those Ray bans and everything…yes the grips were a lil bit wrong…but know what it is going to do that much needed revival of Hockey in India..also maybe the movie seen without that heavy background track may be a lil off color..what say!!!
I liked it..for what it will do for hockey and the girls…they were awesome!!!!!!

    Prashant,

I think Jaideep should be given full credit for writing such a great script. He is among the few talents we have today.

The haryanvi girl {the short one} is Chitrashi Rawat and not Shilpa Shukla. Shilpa played Bindiya Naik in the film. All the girls were simply brilliant and may i say, overshadowed khan completely.

There would be many opinions, but Chak de is one of the best films this year according to me.

Read your comments and it clearly goes to prove your intensity as an actor. Bombil and Beatrice clearly gives out the flavor of an excellent film and not to forget your makeover from Vilas to Bombil looks awesome.

By the way waiting eagerly to get on to working with you on our project MRSMH (Full marks to Adeep for his choice)..

    Cheers:)
