Bangalore Screenwriting WorkshopIt all started when I couldn’t attend a workshop due to personal reasons. A wonderful experience I missed, which could have added a lot to my learning curve. And then I learnt that I wasn’t the only one, there were many more like me who couldn’t attend the workshop due to various reasons like other commitments or not getting selected/listed etc. Then the idea of trying to arrange for such a workshop kept coming back to me time and again, but I wasn’t sure how to even dare to dream about such a thing. I shared this idea with a friend of mine but that dialogue fizzed out same day after an initial enthusiasm. After a long time during one of my weekend shoots, a friend of mine happened to drop in and we started talking about films in general & film schools/institutes in Bangalore. We talked about how we have a dearth of such learning platforms in Bangalore. As we talked it so happened that he mentioned about wanting to do something on the similar lines of what I was thinking for a long time, that’s where Bangalore Screenwriting Workshop” was born.

This is a humble effort from a bunch of film enthusiasts whose love for cinema has purely driven to dare make an effort to facilitate an event like this. The intention is to bring the aspiring screenwriters together under one roof and facilitate a great deal of first hand learning experience from a few contemporary filmmakers/screenwriters our country has witnessed, who have been slowly changing the face of Indian cinema.

A bunch of enthusiasts with lots of passion for cinema started to work on what we had planned and look here we are, presenting to you, an extensive workshop in screenwriting, covering aspects from the basic fundamentals to nuances, aesthetics and the grammar of cinematic story telling.

My special thanks to PFC, its editors, authors & readers for having proven that all it takes is “Passion for Cinema” and the rest follows.

WOW!!! this is awesome… unfortunately I am out of B’lore now, so maybe my views may not matter much… however is there anyway that the fees can be lowered? that can be one reason why some folks may shy out (6500/- is a pretty meaty sum for even somebody earning 50K, to be giving out in one shot, specially in an area where they are interested but not too sure if they want o pursue into… just my view) … brilliant effort… my best wishes to you guys…

      @PS,

thanks a lot buddy. And thanks for pointing out the fee structure, we had a lot of discussions about this and for the target of 125, to break even we arrived at this fee. Since this event isn’t a sponsored one , it has to be an event sponsored by the participants/candidates. We are trying for sponsors, hope to get lucky so that we could reduce some burden off the participants…

Hey Arvind .. I guess you might have already thought about this, might have worked on this as well, still just a suggestion/question… did you try talking to people who organise the Bangalore Habba and Rangashakara? They might help you get some sponsors… Ravindra Kalakshetra management and people like Arundhati Nag might just be an option to try talking to and get some sponsors… apart from that I think talking to Radio guys like 93.5 Big FM, they can probably be interested in sponsoring shows… I remember these were the avenues we used to try while we were in college trying to get sponsors… fortunately for us even if this never helped in getting sponsors, would lead to something else… and with that Mentor list, I think we should be able to garner some support from the above mentioned people….

I know my office people when they had their annual show had spoken to vasanti the RJ and they got some leads on to the radio folks… I am not too sure if this works, however thought it would be good to at least put across the ideas i can think of…

Hey Arvind, was just giving it a thought, how about trying to talk to colleges like Wigan and Leigh and maybe other colleges which encourage media arts… for that matter even healthy cultural activity… I somehow think there can be a probable beginning even there, for all you know there maybe a college sponsored seat bookings even if not sponsorships…

i agree with PS on this. the fee may prove to be a deterrent for many who have not decided whether to convert their hobby/passion into profession
    .
if u do some calculation of 6500*125, and then reduce 6500 to 5000 and try 5000*160; u will land up at the same total. why i say 5000 is because, that amount seems within reach. but 6500 seems to be a huge amount. its a market-pricing thing, 6500 tends to 10k, but 5k is just half-way there; psychological thingy :)

    • PS PS says:

@ crazyrals.. totally agree with the thought, but maybe psychologically this may work a thoda differnet also … maybe 5k sounds good when compared to 6500, but between 6500 alone vs 5000 alone 6500 sounds better, arbit number, much less than 10k which is the bracket…. while 5000 sounds like a concrete number, rounding up to the extreme end of the another bracket which ends at 5K    confessions of a restless mind…

Arvind, this was in no means to deviate or confuse you … maybe me and Crazyrals will post another message addressing you once we have settled off this confusion, so you can read only the concrete answer, and still stick to the original fees strcuture as decided

@PS and Arvind: my last words on this – 5000 is a psychologically satisfying number and seems within reach. if the fee is reduced fruther to 4500 and seats increased to 200, then it will bring in a lot of students, i believe.
        .
also, do try and promote this in ‘arts’ colleges. they will be up for it. and put up ads/banners or distribute pamphlets[if possible] near ‘ranga shankara’. that will definitely help your cause.
        .
no more confusion and restlessness for me :)

            @ CR & PS,

thanks for all the enthusiasm and suggestions, we have been strategically working on the marketing of the event as well so that we get a lot of deserving candidates. Colleges you mentioned, news papers, radio, all are in our agenda and we’re already mid-way through it. Talking about increasing the seats from 125, my opinion is, it would just become another event without being able provide the much needed attention while teaching. For now we are actually expecting 75 but can go upto 125, not more than that. We haven’t yet thought about making this annual or bi-annual. Depending upon the enrollment and response we shall think about it later after the event.

With 6.5 K i might as well shot a film using a good video cam by myself…adapt a good short story and shoot it.i would stand a chance of learning more doing that..Please keep things in perspective….We have a lot of people interested in this but this fee is turning a lot of people away…and how many college kids do you expect to get who can shell out this kind of money..most of the aspiring film makers are penniless or cannot afford this money and only have this real ambition to make films..please please try bringing the fee down..your talking of a month’s rent in my case…

    Hey guys!

Just got to know abt this workshop. Sounds awesome and the lined up mentors are like a dream. I have always loved the films by them satya, hazaaron khwahishen aisi(this ones a gem :) ). Never really thought abt who the people are behind it all. But well now i know. I think its an awesome initiative by you guys and i am really looking forward to this learning.

As for the pricing i dont mind it. Film schools charge 15-20 lacs per year and i think compared to it. Its peanuts and i dont think people will stop to worry abt it if they really love cinema like me and a lotta people like me do. A lot of my friends from Chennai are planning to attend it. I just wanted to write this article cause i want you guys to know we are with you.

    Thanks a lott!

After a lot of deliberations and discussions the BSW team has decided to re-frame the fee structure to Rs 5500/- so that the core agenda of the workshop to encourage more and more aspiring filmmakers/screenwriters and film students is achieved by bringing in a better affordability to attend the workshop. This is the best we could do by cutting all corners and hoping that the turn around would be more to compensate for the fee reduction. We request all the aspiring screenwriters/filmmakers to register for the workshop and support the initiative.

    Arvind,
What are you saying? quote>’We request all the aspiring screenwriters/filmmakers to register for the workshop and support the initiative.’
Are the likes of Saurabh Shukla, Manish Gupta & Rajat Kapoor going to be in B’lore to support/ encourage wannabe scriptwriters or vice/versa?
Rs. 5500/- is still a LOT for a 2-3 day crowded(120)-darshan of the Gods when Mahadev Syd Field is avialable in Gangaram’s for Rs 450/-(only).

    • Aditya G Aditya G says:

      Ranjeet,

As mentioned earlier by Arvind, this is an initiative taken by us to promote an important aspect of film-making in the city. The cost of the workshop is not a random number that we decided to come up with, but a price that each participant has to pay in order to receive what the workshop is offering. Remember that we are getting an impressive list of mentors from Mumbai to Bangalore, and this would be spread over 5-days in 7hr sessions.

If you believe that the chance of learning from people who actually, have written for films that have been made, and a chance to interact with them is not worth Rs.5500.00, then by all means go for that Syd Field book you are referring to. Instead of making a smart ass comment about the event, it’d be more constructive if you could just say its still not affordable for you. And this includes to all of those who have made unnecessary comments about the event itself and not particularly regarding fee.Agreed its a democratic forum and you have the right to voice your opinion. But please do keep in mind that the organizers are conducting a break-even event where, there is a 0.1% chance of this turning into a money spinning event. The very same organizers are normal folk (budding filmmakers) just as a lot of people around here, and we believe in doing something, rather than just talk of doing something. We make our short films too like everyone else here and we aspire to up the grade by taking such initiatives in order to learn.

P.S: For those who are looking to provide us a free consultation in here on how the event can be conducted, please do us a favor by calculating on your own the logistics, cost of conducting such an event, and you might then understand where we are coming from.

    Aditya,
I implore you-after the workshop is done and over with, please let us know about what a success it was-how many people attended, how many worthwhile ideas were churned out etc. Maybe then, the people who’re spewing bile here would get wiser and start saving up for the next installment of this break-even event.
Also, next time you could approach Rangashankara or the Suchitra Film Society for lending out their premises and saving on logistics.Weather permitting, both places are known to be quite amenable to such sincere efforts.
