Begani Shadi Mein Adullah Deewana : Item numbers by Super Stars
Many years ago Raj Kapoor and Padmini had danced on the song Begani Shaadi mein Abdullah Deewana. Song was very much part of the film and Raj Kapoor and Padmini were not mere imported material in the film but they were leading man and woman of the film.
Helen used to be there in the films to dance on one or two songs and people used to enjoy and appreciate her songs and dances but her dances also looked part of the films.
It has not been unusual thing to bring big stars to appear in guest roles. Mostly in these cameos they play themselves on the screen and sometimes they play small roles also but then films can not be promoted on the basis of these small guest appearances. These guest appearances have been like bonus material for audiences. They don’t feel cheated in such cases. Audiences were happy to find AB and Rekha in Chasme-Baddur. Amitabh in Chhoti si baat. There are many such films where guest appearances of big stars have brought pleasant feelings to the audiences.
Exceptions to this guest appearnace protocol are also there. Some years ago it was said that Amitabh Bachchan was in the guest role in the Sunnay Deol and Chanky Pande starrer Insaniyat but when audience saw the film he was there in half of the film.
Now trend has been started in Hindi cinema where big stars are used to dance on the song/s and these item songs become the most important tool to promote the film.
It’s a common sense that if they are there to dance on an item song only and this is promoted as biggest USP of the film then why audience should go to watch the entire film? They can watch this item song anyway through other means.
This trend has affected the hindi cinema. Even when a famous director or actor turns producer he takes resort of this gimmick and asks his super star friends to dance on item songs.
Karan Johar is a famous director so he does not need to promote his film only on the basis of one item song only as people are going to watch his film anyway. He uses Kajol and Rani Mukharjee as his lucky mascots and if they have not played any role in his films then they appear for few seconds in a song. Nothing is bad in that as he does not promote his films on the basis of their presence in his films.
But when he turned a producer with Kaal and hired some other director to direct the film then he needed services of SRK and film was promoted through his item song as if audiences were going to watch the film only because of his dance.
Did his dance help the film on BO?
SRK’s item song Ishq Kamina, could save Shakti on BO?
Bipasha’s Item song in No Smoking helped the film on BO?
Two item songs of SRK and Hritik made Crazy 4 a super hit film?
Rakhi Sawant’s item song helped the film’s fate at BO?
And for these Item songs Mr Roshan had to pay Rs 2 Cror to Ram Sampat. Now if these three songs were not used in the film then roughly he was going to save around 3-3.5 Cror rupees, which is not a less amount. A full length feature film could be made with this amount. Saved money could have been used either in increasing the quality of the film or on the promotion of the film. And less budget puts less pressure on producer because now he can earn profit even if his film gets an average success at BO. And then there are earnings from other means like satellite rights and sales of DVDs etc.
Hritik’s dances in KNPH and Dhoom 2 had brought additional success and fame to the films because they were part of the films. But what he is doing in Crazy 4? Arshad Warsi is a very good dancer, why he could not dance on the songs used in the film? His dance was going to add value to the film.
Dances of SRK and Hritik have brought any value addition to the film or to their own reputations?
That is the limit when an item song is placed in the end of the film under the hope that audience will sit patiently till end to watch the biggest attraction of the film.
Is it not insulting attitude towards star cast of these films where item songs of super stars are included additionally? Producer and director don’t have confidence upon the film and its star cast so they are making it a safe bet by introducing an item dance and ideally it has nothing to do with the films main plot.
And on the top of everything these item songs and dances consume a large sum of money and increase the over all cost of the films.
Point is when they are no guarantee to make a film successful then why to waste such big amount of money? Same amount could be used in bringing more quality to the same film.
Do they (item song and dance) really help films at BO?
Do people go to watch a film to watch these item songs?
How long these big stars will be making true that old song – Begani shadi mein abdullah diwana.
They are becoming tool in the game of befooling the audiences. Is it a fair game?

Upaay hai naa - TV remote is in your hands and the wallet is in your pocket. I think it is silly to presume that audiences who watch the promo do not know what an item song means. They are fully aware they will see these stars in ONLY an item number - the promos advertise them as ITEM numbers non-stop on TV! If they still want to spend money on that film then that is their choice in a free country. For the rest of us there is youtube! In fact more went to see Krazzy 4 than U Me Aur Hum - so ITEM numbers did pay off. K-4 is already an above average film 6 days into release. Ajay did his own item numbers in UMAH but when has Ajay been a draw for his charisma or dancing? And Kajol did her item number (Saiyyan) at a most inopportune time in the film - didn’t know if one should laugh or cry.

Items numbers referred to “Item (sic) bombs”, usually women in skimpy clothing (atom bomb) who appeared just for the duration of the songs and these songs had no connection to the plot itself. Contrary to what RK writes, these numbers are NOT a new innovation and the earliest item numbers were performed by Helen in films like Caravan, 1971 (Dekho woh Aaa Gaya - Piya tu ab to Aaja), Anamika, 1973 (Aaj ki raat koi aane ko hai), and the unforgettable Mehbooba o Mehbooba from Sholay, 1975. According to wikipedia (so take that with a tiny grain of salt) the name item number was first used for Shilpa Shetty’s Main Aayi Hoon UP Bihar Lootne in Shool. The first male item boy? Abhishek in Rakht.

I believe its a phase and will pass. Item song has become a kind of formula and as all directors and producers want to earn money so if these costly item songs dont bring them additional success to their films then they will stop using this formula.
Actors sometimes do these things for the sake of their relationships but if things start affecting their personal image then they will also take excuse of professionalism.

That, Cricket players have to think, in which direction they are going. If entertainment part is heavier than the game then its going to affect them in long run.
Perhaps it was a past era when Cricket players had a different and distinguished starry image than film stars and now film stars are going to over shadow the players.

Helen’s place was secured as a dancer. as Johny Walker’s place was secured as a comedian. Johny Walker, though a comedian, was always given a nice song. He was always part of the film.
Same way Helen appeared in the films when a character is visiting the Hotel or Villain is possessing the hotel and situation leads characters to that place where Helen was dancing.
and in most of the films she had a role also.
Though exceptions could be there. But overall Helen was accepted as a dancer and her dancing talent was used in the films. Those years films were not promoted on the basis of these dancing numbers.
make a nice song and use dancers and song’s popularity itself will add attraction automatically to the film.
Beedi jalaye le is not imported item song because Bipasha is a character in the film and her occupation is of a dancer.
Ajay and Kajol are characters in the UMAH and they can sing and dance on any number there.
There is no comparison between Crazy 4 and UMAH.
But using super stars in dance numbers?
Here motive is to use star appeal of the star than the song and dance itself.
RK - Helen was often in the story - but many a times only in an ITEM NUMBER (I gave examples). And since there was no TV or internet at the time, all publicity was through trailers in films and posters. I think you are comparing apples and oranges as far as the promotions go. The objectivity in such an analysis is worrisome when the success of Heyy babyy is not attributed to an item number but the inability to take a film like Kaal to success falls on the shoulders of the item numbers. IMO both were equally crappy films - neither was watchable, item number or not, and in the end the audience decides what they will like. When No Smoking uses Bipasha in an item number and the film fails, the intentions of the makers are exactly what? Maybe they should have focused on broadening the appeal of their film, instead of the item number?
It is also a bit superior and condescending to think that the audience cannot look at the publicity and know they will ONLY see a superstar in the item number. After that if they choose to go and spend money, then it is their money after all. All reports suggest that the 3 item numbers have sent the trashy Krazzy 4 to success. While IN FILM dancing in UMAH may not do the same for that film.
Whether it is No Smoking or Karzzy 4, or Kaal Dhamaal, or the scantily clad women in Dhoom2, or even in UMAH (Dil Dhakda hai) - the motive is always to use star appeal and scant clothing to get people into the theater. In fact every film maker’s dream is to get a maximum number of people into the theater, other wise why make a film and why release it?

The not-so-happy response to Krazzy 4 has raised the question if comedies are really a safe bet as has been said in the trade circle.
Meanwhile, U Me aur Hum has been declared Devgan’s biggest hit so far in the overseas territories. The film is doing well in the UK.
According to the tradewallahs, U Me aur Hum will prove to be an average grosser whose fate in metros will be better. Krazzy 4 will do moderate business in Mumbai city.

Hritik, Rakhi Sawant, SRK none of the three has “K” as first alphabet in his/her first name.
They should have searched someone having this special facility in his/her name.
