Best directorial debut of the decade

Best directorial debut of the decade.

Since Anurag Kashyap opened the gates for a debate with his comments on Luck By Chance, I have been wondering which has been the best directorial debut of the decade

I have enumerated below a list of movies which I believe are contenders for the best directorial debut. My top 10 being:

10. Bheja Fry (2007) – Sagar Bellary
My friend dragged me into the theatre for this one, saying Bheja Fry is a hilarious comedy. After watching it, I told him that not only is this a hilarious movie, but also a very well scripted and directed one. Comedy as a genre is not taken too seriously, let alone its actors and directors. Bheja Fry is a clean comedy, which is a rarity nowadays – without using too many props and shooting more than 75% of the movie on a set. Excellent job by director who completed the movie in a shoe string budget. This according to me rates as one of the finest work by a debutant director. I place this movie in the list also because of the reason that it opened the gates for actors like Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey, Rajat Kapoor etc. whom we now see often on-screen. With this movie, small budget movies started getting noticed by producers and distributors. And now we have some good economics for the industry with such movies.

9. Kal Ho Na Ho (2003)- Nikhil Advani

(I know 2 movies I have selected will draw immense criticism from many. But still I need to put them in this list because I believe they belong here!)

There were rumours that this movie was ghost directed by KJo, which today seem strongly convincing given the movies Nikhil Advani has directed now. However, one cannot deny that Kal Ho Na Ho was an excellent movie in terms of technique, entertainment and style. The movie took us by surprise on a couple of occasions, specially the climax where at least I did not imagine I would smile. The movie was nearly perfect in terms of execution. The movie was a super hit and I felt it deserved to be. Excellent performances, superb music and moreover Kaantaben became the talk of the town. Honestly, I feel if we stop being cynical about it, Kal Ho Na Ho was indeed a great start for Nikhil Advani who still cannot match the expectations he has created post this movie. Which only makes us believe the rumours that it was a Karan Johar (ghost) directed movie…

8. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)- Karan Johar
Ere to KKHH, the scene for Dharma productions was that it had no hit under it’s belt.
Yash Johar was considered to be the unluckiest producer. Barring one hit Dostana in 1980, Dharma production was termed as a flop production house. Though Agneepath was an award winner and critically acclaimed movie -even that was not a money spinner.
So, enter the Producers son who has done a cameo in and assisted a blockbuster DDLJ. He gets a cast of SRK & Kajol, and makes a movie which is not original in content, direction seems to be inspired by Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra and many others. But he delivers a blockbuster for his father, makes the production house one of the leading one – while in the same year a turkey called Duplicate was produced and released by the same banner. KKHH had a brilliant editing and screenplay. Today, it may be considered as an object of ridicule but when it released, the situation was different. SRK made tight tee’s and accessories famous, Kajol delivered one of her finest performances and Rani became a star overnight. No matter what people say about Karan Johar but the fact remains that he made his father a respected person before he left the world and a legacy of Dharma Productions.

7. Aamir (2008)- Raj Kumar Gupta

What can I say about this movie! All of us, who have seen this movie were introduced to the dingy lanes of Mumbai, the treatment a particular section of a community is going through, how the youth is forced into terrorism. Along with this we were introduced to a musical genius – Amit Trivedi, the music director of this film. Words cannot describe my experience of watching Aamir. Rajeev Khandelwal, a television actor was cast in this movie was expected to go unnoticed with the movie, but whoever has seen the movie await his next release. Rajkumar Gupta made a smashing debut with this movie, giving UTV Spot Boy its maiden success right in its first release.

6. A Wednesday (2008)- Neeraj Pandey
If any movie has hit me like a ton of bricks and left me speechless while I walked out of the cinema hall, it was this one. A Wednesday is a movie which deals with terrorism; though several movies might have been made on this issue none have and probably will be able to match this one. This movie shocked me and shocked me for good. This movie shocked me and shook me as well. I can keep on writing about the impact of A Wednesday but I should refrain from doing so lest I give away the plot. In case you haven’t seen it…. Go watch it!!

5. Socha Na Tha (2005)- Imtiaz Ali

What was wrong with this movie? This is one question I keep asking myself every time I watch it.
This is by far the best romantic comedy I have ever seen. Why did this movie flop? The answer I think is the low key publicity of the movie and that it took too long in the making. But it definitely has the best screenplay of the decade. Aptly titled, ‘Socha Na Tha’. From start to end of this movie, whatever you think will happen next- doesn’t happen and the way the movie ends, you will be pleasantly surprised. For me, Abhay Deol and Imtiaz Ali became the star right away. If you haven’t seen this movie, watch it and you will also say… yeh to SOCHA NA THA

4. Ab Tak Chappan (2004)- Shimit Amin

I remember one thing distinctly about this movie – I was in Delhi that time and my Boss saw this movie with me. When we came out of the hall, he exclaimed “Ohh F^&*!! What a movie!!” Being a Mumbai-ite, understanding every line in the movie was not difficult for me at all. And usually, any Mumbai based movie is not much appreciated in the north. Surprisingly, Delhi loved this movie. Shimit Amin who is now famous for Chak De!! India debuted with this Ram Gopal Varma production. He introduced a new genre altogether with this movie called ‘Mumbai Police’ genre. All of a sudden so many movies came on the Mumbai Police but none could match this one. The highlight of this movie was razor sharp editing, pacy camerawork, hard hitting drama, and a climax which will take you by surprise. The movie is subtle, no jingoism, no over-the-top Nana Patekar. With Ab Tak Chappan, we were introduced to Shimit Amin, a director who has only got better with a cult movei – Chak De!! India.

3. Black Friday (2007)- Anurag Kashyap

I saw the promo of Paanch during my college days and I was taken aback with the kind of movie I was about to witness. I was waiting for the movie when I heard it has got stuck with the censors. Then I heard of Anurag Kashyap working on a futuristic movie called Allwyn Kalicharan, the title was weird and then I happened to see the first cut poster of the movie in some trade magazine, I was bowled over by the look of it, Anil Kapoor lighting up a cigarette and below was written in bold – Directed by: Anurag Kashyap. Since then, I wanted to watch an Anurag Kashyap movie. But sadly, even this movie never got made. After a lot of controversies, his first film finally got released on Feb 09, 2007. To be really honest with you, I had seen Black Friday much before in 2005 (Thanks to piracy) and I had given a thumbs-up to and doffed my hat for Anurag Kashyap. When it finally hit the screens in 2007, I still made it a point that I saw it twice in the movie hall. The vision he shared through this movie was fantabulous. He recreated the entire 1993 bomb blasts in such a way that I felt a chill down my spine. Even in No Smoking, the blast scene where John goes deaf actually deafened me for a while in the hall. Anurag made a blasting debut with Black Friday. Academy Award nominee Danny Boyle, stated that a chase sequence in one of the opening scenes of Slumdog Millionaire was based on a “12-minute police chase through the crowded Dharavi slum” in Black Friday. Sheer brilliance brother!!!
Though we all still want to see Paanch, Gulal and want Allwyn Kalicharan to be made, for now we can settle with DEV D and sincerely hope that this man makes more movies as he is one of the few directors who have it in them to represent Indian Cinema internationally caring a hoot for commercial gains. He, according to me will always be the MAN in the industry.

2. Munnabhai MBBS (2003)- Raju Hirani
Sanjay Dutt was always associated with Bhaai roles, so when a movie called Munnabhai released it had nothing going for it. I remember the opening received by this movie was below average, but overnight things changed and Munnabhai & Circuit became the talk of the nation. Made with an average budget and a not so famous cast then, the movie was a runaway success. Munnabhai MBBS remains one of the best movies in Indian Cinema. I don’t think it needs any explanation why!! One thing which I would just like to say is that this movie was a near-to-perfect one. Story, screenplay, dialogues, emotions, comedy, acting, music, camerawork, editing, direction – everything was perfect. I remember slamming the music of this film and after watching the movie, I listened to every song over and over again – and loved it. Without any doubt Raju Hirani is the most celebrated director of our country today and he is the first Indian director who will enjoy the distinction of making a sequel as good as the original – if not better.

1. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)- Farhan Akhtar

I would like to elaborate on the scene before Dil Chahta Hai released.
Indian film industry was churning out regular formula films viz. Action, comedy or romantic movies. A romantic movie essentially needed to have big North Indian families and if it had any leading superstar along with a festive release, the movie was a certified Super Hit. Jatin Lalits and Anu Maliks were ruling the roost with AR Rahman occasionally giving an OST and being immensely praised for it. Not to mention, the quality of Indian Cinema was considered pedestrian. Then along came a movie looked like it has absolutely no chance. Aamir was fresh from the success of Lagaan, Saif was sitting at home labelled as a flop actor, Akshaye Khanna was also cooling his heels somewhere. The entire nation was gripped in Lagaan fever at that time, and believe me nobody gave Dil Chahta Hai a second thought. The multiplex culture had just begun at that time and the number of multiplexes in India could be counted on fingers. Post release, the songs became anthems; Aamir haircut and goatee became a rage; Saif Ali Khan became the best actor for supporting roles -till Hum Tum happened; Akshaye Khanna’s career got a fresh lease of life; Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy became the most sought after music directors and hit the big league; a production house called Excel Entertainment was born with Farhan & Ritesh – and is now synonymous to New Age Indian Cinema.
The movie, had no story as such. It was just a journey of 3 friends which starts, takes an interval and ends. You don’t ask questions, you feel so good about everything and yet you cannot decide what you liked about this movie the most. Believe me, this was my reaction after watching DCH. Everything about this movie was so fresh, the cinematography, the music, the editing, the choreography, the direction. Dil Chahta Hai in all aspects remains a cult.

Knowingly or unknowingly, Farhan became responsible for changing the face of Indian Cinema, changing the taste of the Indian cine goer and moreover marking the end of many regular masala film makers.
Dil Chahta Hai would remain the movie which will be remembered for decades to come as a benchmark for any debutant director. It’s indeed No.1.
___________________________________________________________________________________

There were a couple of movies which I am sure people would like to place in this list like, Chandni Bar, Rang De basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Rock On!!. But these movies cannot be considered as the work of a first timer. As Chandni Bar, RDB and Rock On!! were second attempt by their directors, their 1st movie being Trishakti, Aks and Aryan-the unbreakable respectively. TZP does not qualify here as the movie had Amol Gupte and Aamir Khan duelling over it. So, I don’t rate that movie as a solo directorial effort by Aamir Khan.

Looking forward to your comments on this piece, dear readers!

Instead of the KJo stable and Bheja Fry (which is a straight lift) , you could have added Kabeer Kaushik for Sehar :) just my two cents

  3. OZ & papai, I agree Sehar was a good movie and there were others who could have made it to this list like Haasil by Tigmanshu Dhulia. But then I couldnt fit in my top 10.

And Papai, I have tried to be specific for the reason why I have put KJo stable and Bheja fry.

Bheja Fry could be a straight lift but I sincerly feel that even a copy paste job is not easy, otherwise all Sanjay Gupta and Firoz Nadiadwala movies will be super hits. Hope you would agree with my point..

  4. Sehar wud be one of the best debuts in this decade.

And Vishal Bharadwaj with Makhdee, to date one of the best children’s movies made.

Shooljit Sircar’s Yahaan, Pradeep Sarkar with Parineeta, Timangshu Dalia with Haasil, are other good debuts.

looks like many director prefer making remake as their debut movie, i guess it must have been less riskier Hence Munnabhai,DCH,Ab tak chappan stands out. Parineeta is defintaely remarkable film as debut. You should list films like Hassil, Seher instead of Aamir,Kjo and few remakes listed above
And Black Friday was not debut of AK ,it should Paanch

  10. Njudo-E-Dara,

Paanch never got released, hence the debut has to be considered as Black Friday. I have mentioned this point.

As far as Parineeta goes it was loosely inspired by a 70’s movie which starred Jeetendra and Sulakshana Pandit and was a remake, I dont remember the name. Also, to be really honest, I found Parineeta, a very boring film.

But yes, Haasil and Sehar are definetly very good movies but I couldnt find space for them in my top 10 list.

but if we are talking the best debut then it should be about craft of fillmaking and not technicality in release and also not BO success(which is not always product of talent), anyway i think not many have seen paanch so till then it is fair to take Black Friday as AK debut

Parineeta was based on a Bengali novel by Sarat. And prior to Pradeep Sarkar the most famous version was Bimal Roy’s 1953 version with Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari.

Yeah there was a 1969 version starring Samit Bhanja and Moushumi, and i guess the Jeetu-Sulakshana flick ur referring to was Sankoch, but those movies came and went without being remembered.

@Sougata: DDLJ was 1995. I guess he covered the period from 1998 – 2008 for his decade. Avinash, am I right? Otherwise I would have added Khamoshi too.. DDLJ, there was no way one could have missed it. Like it or not, it changed the course of mainstream Hindi cinema.
@Rajeev: I agree! Damn, how could I have forgotten Sarfarosh?!!

  25. Gurudev, I think there could have been a polite way to put that.

Anyways to answer your question, There are atleast more than 1000 releases from 1998-2008 atleast 100 debutant directors. For me this forms the top 10. I have given my reasoning along with every film. You have a right to disagree.

As far as TZP goes, I dont agree at all that it was completly an Amir Khan directed movie, because if you see the credits carefully Amol Gupte has been credited as Creative director of the film. So this clearly means that it was not completly a movie directed by Aamir Khan.

Next, Luck by Chance has released on 30th January 2009. Hence I cannot consider it in the list. Dibakar Banerjee made a smashin debut with Khosla ka Ghosla, I dont deny that but as I mentioned this is my Top 10 and my reasoning is given above.

  26. Arati thank you for clarifying on my behalf.

    The period covered is 1998-2008.

Ghayal is 1990, DDLJ 1995 and qsqt is 1988. This cannot make it to the list Rajeev. As far as Ek Hasina thi is concerned, without any doubt it was an edge of the seat thriller, but again as I said, didnt make it in my list.

  35. Thank you Manju, Ratnakar and Sridhar.

Ratnakar, I had already made the disclaimer thru the line ‘I have enumerated below a list of movies which I believe are contenders for the best directorial debut. My top 10 being:’

However people just want me to incorporate their favouraites in this one. I would request you to kindly read the reasoning before you comment something. I standby the TOP 10 I have submitted here. All the movies I have placed here were novel and pathbreaking and changed the perception of people. For people who dont think Bheja Fry shud be in the list, need to understand that post Bheja Fry- actors like Vinay Pathak, Rajat Kapoor and Ranvir shorey became stars overnight for multiplex audiences and started being noticed by audience, producers and distributors. Post that there were movies like Dasvidaniya, Mithya, etc. but the torch bearer was Bheja Fry.

As far as KKHH goes, I still feel it had an unconventional story. SRK and Kajol made college kids and then SRK shown as widower and a father of a 8 year old kid falling in love with Kajol. That was unconventional when the time KKHH released.

Please dont be biased about such movies, even though they might be lifted or could be a regular fare according to you. Look at the positive side of it as well. Not every movie is expected to be path breaking but the ones which do need to be lauded as well.

  37. LOL Ratnakar @ the spin on AAA.

One movie that would’ve definitely been on my list and has been missed by everyone here is Shashanka Ghosh’s Waisa Bhi Hota Hai – Part 2. I see it as one of the most underrated movies of the last decade along with Sehar.

And then there are several other movies that would qualify as good directorial debuts from 98-2008. I’ll list them out. This list is not what I would consider the best debuts of the last decade but something people wanting to compose lists similar to Avinash’s can start with.

    Nagesh Kukunoor’s Hyderabad Blues (1998), Hansal Mehta’s Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar (2000), Mani Shankar’s 16th December, Meghna Gulzar’s Filhaal(2002), Shaad Ali’s Saathiya (2002), Sujoy Ghosh’s Jhankaar Beats (2003), Rohit Shetty’s Zameen (2003), Farha Khan’s Mai Hoon Na (2004), Ishaan Trivedi’s 7 1/2 Phere (2005), Sanjay F. Gupta’s Karam (2005), Onir’s My Brother Nikhil (2005), Homi Adjania’s Being Cyrus (2006), Saket Choudhary’s Pyar Ke Side Effects (2006), Amrit Sagar’s 1971 (2007), Sanjay Khandur’s Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local (2007), Reema Kagti’s Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007) & Navdeep Singh’s Manorama SFU (2007).

Vaastav wasn’t technically Mahesh Manjrekar’s debut. He debuted with a marathi film Aai. But if I were to make a list of best Hindi debuts of the last decade, Vaastav would be right there.

DCH is definitely up there. I used to hate hindi movies and almost all indian movies ( except maybe a rare kamal or mani rathnam movie ). I found even lagaan to be ordinary ( because i have seen similar movies in south made ). Then somebody forced me to watch DCH. Wow was what i felt. Absolutely cool. First thing i did, bought the DVD. After “mouna ragam”, this was the romantic movie to watch and still is.

I think “aamir” is a much better movie than “a wednesday” – because the later gets too preachy in the end and somehow there werent as many interesting sequences as the former.

Have to watch the remaining…( watched munnabhai…very taut…worked inspite of the drug addict )

If you take the last 20-30 years in Hindi movies, your list is pretty close. KKHH to be talked about in this list is just crazy – maybe in the “worst movies to become a huge hit” list.

Some people like intellectism and image of reality in films.Few people like romantic films. Each genre has its viewers. And film making is not a pure art.Its mixture of art and commerce.hence people will look for entertainment.David Dhawan has its own set of faithful belivers and AK has its own avid lovers. But,all people (also me)are trying to push our own wish on the author of this column.People here are highly biased and takes films very seriously. They give bashings to Mahest Bhatt,Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra very openely.Satayajeet ray,Kurosowa,Trauffat and Benegal are not god like people.AK is no dark knight of bollywood.Everyone is making films in the way,he thinks and ethos he believes in.Make a movie yourself, the movie will itself speak out its quality.Auter movies are more close to his identity than other film makers.Any movie highly surrealistic or non sense if attached to emotion of audience is good other wise trash in memories lane.Let enjoy the cinema but do not judge it.

Why Manorama Six feet and Khosla Ka Khosla not in the list? Two crap movies KKHH and Kal Ho Na Ho best debuts? This guy must be joking. Why then left out Ghajini?Add that also.DCH is an average movie,do not deserve to be No1.Just because Anurag Kashyap felt it to be the best debut doesn’t make it No.1.This guy seems to be exactly regurgitating what AK said about DCH in his post. The subject of this film has already been handled by Malayalam and Tamil filmmakers in 80s itself.DCH was more stylish, there were some good songs, apart from that there is nothing in that movie.People came to watch that movie mainly because of Aamir who was a superstar at that time also. The other two guys were not doing well at that time, but even if DCH flopped they would have survived because of their filmi connections. In fact Saif’s connections were so strong that he could win a national award for best actor for a crap movie

    @sharath

You are missing the point of DCH. The story was not new, but the treatment, the performances were really nice. And it had the “cool” factor. I dont what else a typical 20s person growing up in the urban area goes through. There was nothing “cinematic” or “cliche” ( except for the wedding night scene which was filmy ). It was just a cool movie – i dont know how to put it – it is like saying “dumb and dumber” is a trash movie – but you can watch it a million times and still it is so goofy…the same about dch…especially the scenes where the 3 guys get together and discuss their relationships is just hilarious and still so realistic…it just jumped beautifully between fantasy ( the songs ) and reality ( the relationships ) without any unnecessary characters/dialogues…smooth and cool…

it is just hard to say why movies are called “cult”. What is so special about pulp fiction ? is there a real story – in a filmi sense ? It almost seems like individual cool scenes put together…but it is just so cool…i feel the same way about DCH…

And I dont care whether it was a box office success or not…because i am not personally invested…why is it in india the guy from the street is so interested in the financials of the movie…watch the movie for what it is…( i wish they knew the same about the indian budget )…

  52. “Just because Anurag Kashyap felt it to be the best debut doesn’t make it No.1″

Did the writer mention that, or imply that anywhere? The tastes or opinions of scores of people out there who liked DCH were not colored by any Anurag Kashyap! You beat yourself every time you post your utterly cynical (not necessarily this time) comments without any solid stand. I am sorry for the tone but your comment deserves utter contempt. Wish I didn’t have to say this!

People flocking to see his movies courtesy Aamir Khan’s superstar status should have made Mangal Pandey also work! Wasn’t he superstar then post Lagaan and DCH ?! even more!?

thank god! A R Rahman didn’t score music for DCH which he was supposed to! Varna pata nahi kya ho jaata?!

This is what Anurag Kashyap has written about DCH

“When Farhan wrote DCH and approached Aamir, he wasn’t what he is today, Saif was almost finished and Akshay Khanna was bpnafide flop, priety had just started to come into her own, and SEL became big with that film”

This is the same thing what author here says.So I came to conclusion that he has been influenced by what AK said.If that is not the case let author clarify.I have also given reasons why what AK said may not be right. For me DCH didn’t work and doesn’t deserve to be No.1.Khosla Ka Khosla and Manorama six feet are better than that and deserves to be in that list.

  54. Sharath,

Then thats your opinion, I have been repeatedly saying that everyone has their own liking and taste. I didn’t even have Anurag’s comments in my mind when I wrote about this post. I just took the leaf from Anurag’s line that Luck By Chance is the best directorial debut of the decade.
Its my list and I completly own this list. Its my opinion that these are the TOP 10. I am no Anurag, Taran Adarsh or Komal Nahta that you start fuming over it and show your displeasure in the way you did. I m just an ordinary service class man who is passionate about Cinema and who may understand a few things more due to my liking and inclination towards this piece of art. If Khosla ka Ghosla or Manorma Six feet Under or Haasil or Ek Hasina thi make it in ur list. I am happy to hear that. I have not disrespected any bodys opinion and views, hence I would appreciate if we all maintain the respect for each other.

I am yet to meet a single person apart from you who has not liked Dil Chahta Hai. I have given my explanation in clear words why I think its no.1 according to me. Its not because Anurag says it and if that was the case, I would have rated Black Friday before anything.

I am saying this for the nth time now to clarify to everyone who reads it. This is my TOP 10 not necessarily this applies to everyone. if you have your likings I respect that and could be it is better than any of the movies listed above, I appreciate that. But please please lets make PFC a place for sensible and matured people who know what democracy is and not misuse it.
