Bhojpuri Gabbar beats Bollywood Gabbar hands down

Now even people in Thailand know it. How Mr. Bhojpuri Gabbar Singh has beaten Bollywood’s Gabbar Singh (nah not the original one, who is unbeatable forever). What am I talking about? Hello… remember someone called RGV… remember how much Aag he had and how he packaged his Aag, blew sholays and had Mr. Bachchan (is it his day on PFC today?) make the biggest mistake of his life in the 21st century?

According to Thaindian

“Released last Friday, Gabbar is making waves all over Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand where Bhojpuri language is widely spoken. Ekta and Shoba Kapoor are the joint producers of the film.

Ektas father and Cine Star Jeetendra has played the role of Thakur. The same role was originally played by late Sanjeev Kumar in Sholay in which the retired police officers entire family is wiped out leaving behind his young daughter-in-law by a runaway dacoit Gabbar Singh and his army. And, the officer takes his revenge with the help of two tricksters Jai and Veeru played by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in the film.

Well it seems like Bhojpuri Gabbar is the biggest hit since sliced bread Sholay Hum Aapke Hain Kaun Dilwale Dulhaniya… Kab Hoi Gawana Hamaar or something something.

Times of India mentions

The Bhojpuri version of blockbuster Sholay has proved an instant hit in the two states where, according to trade sources, the film got excellent initials in 34 cinema halls.

After twenty years since he first hit the silver screen and made Sholay a historic box office hit, legendary Gabbar Singh is making waves in Bihar and Jharkhand again. But the ruthless villain has got “heroic” shades in his character this time.

Hopefully RGV does not go on the wrong track and come up with a sequel to RGV ki Aag. I don’t wanna be brutalized with the next edition of RGV ka Paani…

Its funny… I remember hearing about Jeetendra being cast as “Thakur” and at first I hadn’t realized that it was this Bhojpuri film that the story was referring to. I thought it was for “Aag”. Now, I have nothing against Mohanlal, he’s a fine actor, but I think Jeetendra would have fit the part a bit better.

He would have given the film that “mainstream touch” which “Aag” was lacking from the outset.

I really believe in discover new talent and interesting casting choices, but some films REQUIRE star power. The remake of Sholay tops that list.

Jeetendra vs. Amitabh would have at least brought some nostalgic interest to the film. And it was directed with some class (there’s a fucking thought!) then…

    Then again…

    Alright forget it…
