Bhootnaath Has Tashan

I have got an half hour to write a dhasoo short piece. I will write a music review, for a change. I have not written any music reviews before because a) I don’t know how to review a soundtrack b) there are other capable authors who regularly write music reviews. Anyway, here goes my attempt at writing a music review.

Lately heaps of new Hindi Film Soundtracks were released from Jimmy to Tashan. I have not yet got a chance to check out all the latest soundtracks but did listen to the two latest soundtracks: Tashan & Bhootnath. Both of those soundtracks are composed by the brilliant duo Vishal & Shekhar. I admire their work espeically when they are not composing for Yash Raj. Yes, their most successful work have been with Yash Raj, but I have not liked that sort of music from them. So, I was not excited about the Tashan soundtrack, like others would have been. And their second latest release is Bhootnath, which I will briefly write about it later.

After first hearing of the soundtrack I would have describe the soundtrack as daft, crap, and had potential to be really a good one. Anyway, now I have heard the Tashan soundtrack a few times and have seen the promotional videos of the film, so am in a better position to write something constructive about it. I hope so. Otherwise the article would finish here or you would read ‘crap’ a lot of times.

Let’s start with Chailya - a Kareena item song. She did not look like an item in one of the Tashan stills/posters, in fact, she looked like a relative of Scratchy from The Simpsons. But, to my surprise, she did look like an item in the promotional video of the song. Perhaps it were the extras. I don’t know. It is a typical Sunidhi item song, which has Vishal & Shekhar touch at the starting and in the middle you have the ‘Mahiya’ + ‘Hinglish’ gibberish. Apart from the starting of the song.. the rest is shite. Listen to the starting bit of the song and then forward it to the next song…

“Dil Dance Maare”. It is a very, very, very daft song tune. And I like it. I like the composition. I like the line “Dil Dance Maare”. Does the song make any sense? No. The fusion between rural Hindi dialect and ‘Angrezi’ makes the song stand out in the soundtrack and from other Hinglish songs flying about. The rural Hindi dialect did it for me. The song is not lame or cringe-worthy like their “My Dil Goes Mmmmhhhmmm”. Whenever I think of that song, I feel like puking. But this song “Dil Dance Maare” makes me sing “Dil Dance Maare”.

“Dil Haara” - it is sort of a fusion of two songs: “Omkara” & “Chak De India!”, in terms of the way Sukhwinder has sung the song. There is a tinge of hangover of those two songs in Sukhwinder’s voice. Again, I have no complains about the composition; I like the “Oooooooooo-hoooooooo” bit at the start. But the song doesn’t end with a strong note, imo. And that is disappointing cos “Dil Haara” could have been one of the item song of this year.

“Falak” - a romantic duet. What on earth a soulful romantic song is doing in an action film soundtrack?! Oh, I forgot that we are talking about a Yash Raj Soundtrack! It is just like other Rahet Fateh Ali Khan’s soulful romantic tracks (for example, that song from Jhoom Barbabar Jhoom & Ajja Nachle) but sung by Udit Narayan. Skip this song.

“Tashan Mein” - this song could have been the anthem song of this year! But Vishal & Shekhar missed the boat! Vishal should have sung this song with his partner Shekhar. Why did they get Saleem to sing this song? He messes up this song with his uninspiring voice. They totally got the Sargam wrong - they could not blend the Sargam will the composition. They could learn a thing about Sargam from A R Rahman and Ustad Nusrat. They over-do with “Tashan Mein”. I really want to like this song but that Saleem’s voice and other irregularities are keeping me away from this song.

I did not bother listening to those 30 seconds Tashan of the characters. I thought that was pointless. They could have spend more time on enhancing the quality of main tracks.

So my final verdict is: The album is daft, crap and had potential to be good. Tashan lacks Tashan. Would I buy the album? No. Not worth it. Would I turn off the radio or change the channel when one of the song from the soundtrack is playing? Maybe not.

Bhootnath another latest soundtrack composed by Vishal & Shehkar. It is a kid movie, so did not expect anything great from the soundtrack. I didn’t expect it to be smart like Taare Zameen Par was(but that wasn’t a kid movie.) But surprisingly, “Banku Bhaiya”, another Sukhwinder song, is decent. I would not mind having this song in my playlist or listening to the song when driving. “Hum To Hain Aandhi “, as the title suggests, the song is all about attitude/guts. There is no English gibberish in the song. After all the song is written by Javedsaab. Let me just get to the point, the soundtrack is very thematic and the target audience of this soundtrack is the kids and they would not be disappointed with it. The soundtrack does not dumb down, in fact, it is far mature compare to other recent soundtracks.

HG,I wrote a review sort of thing on music of Tashan but decided against posting it because I thought it didn’t deserve a review :D
    The album sucks.
Btw, about that Sunidhi track…why do I find the starting of that song familiar?

“Tashan mein” could have been the anthem, but ended up being an OK fusion number. Same with “Dil Haara re”. And what is it with the lyrics? If at all they want to use angrezi words and not screw it up, do it like Gulzar saab.

the only thing i liked about tashan is

“i speaking english boli…sahi galat ko maro goli..i wearing suite tana tan….underwear phir bhi indian….i am villian of old tradition….this is bhaiyyaji ka tashan…tashan…tashan…tashan….”

Dil Dance Maare is impossible to get out of your head after a couple of listens. I think that is a way better number than the Hinglish mixture we get today (kiss me kiss me etc. Race!). Tashan Mein is forgettable, Dil Haara is quite nice with the woo-hoo, the romantic duet is a nice listen but could be a real misfit in the film. Kareena’s number is forgettable - Don’t you touch me like that Mahi type lyrics. That number is exactly why Dil Dance Maare is a great song. But each and every song looks pathetic in the promos. My opinion is - buy the album skip the film.

Whoa! I thought the vocals of Tashan Mein was pretty good… it had a rough folksy edge to it…
and one thing i really liked about the album (except Chaliya, totally didnt make it for me) is the lack of hip hop elements and faux raps… I cant stand it…
Dil Dance Maare is like too good… like rextreme says its impossible to get it out of your head… But right now its the ‘Dil Haaaraaayy… ay aay…’ from ‘Tashan Mein’ which is doing the loops in my head…

“Tashan Main” worked bigtime for me..the only good track in the album. “Dil Dance Maare” lyrics irritated me at first but the damn thing is catchy. The others are ok tracks and the intros are passable. A let-down from Vishal-Shekar as far as I am concerned.

Neeraja, I know a crap film/soundtrack does not deserve a post, but this soundtrack had potential to be good and it is by far their best work with Yash Raj, so decided to write about it.

Vivek H, i think, Dil Daance Maare works because it is a very different kind of Hinglish song. Gulzarsaab would have wrote a better song on that theme, but you don’t want to him to write such things.

Vasan, you will like Dil Daance Maare song then. It is an extension of that intro and other intros.

rextreme, yeah each promos look ridiculous, especially Dil Haara song promo.

Gopi, I did not like the Tashan song because I found Saleem’s voice not to be strong and I didn’t get rustic feel of it. If they wanted a rustic feel then they should have gone for Mika Singh - his voice is rusitc & powerful. But I would have preferred if Vishal had sung it with Shekhar.

Sudhir, yes, it is a let down; this album was right in their alley but could not do justice to it. however, their best work with Yash Raj, so far.

    @honhaar
At a second listen closer to the feeble pitched Salim… i concur… he spoils the effect… sorry about the earlier comment in apparent haste… the song would have been much better if it was sung by as you suggested Mika or Shekhar even… Vishal rocks though..
PS: Why doesnt A.R.Rahman sing for other music directors?

    Grr… i hate making stupid errs…
EDIT: At a closer second listen to the feeble pitched Salim…
PS: I so wish there was an edit button here Dammit!!!

vishal indeed surprises u with each of his acts… u listen to the song “dil dance maare” n u start falling for it… mainly its lyrics. u check for the lyricist and bang! its vishal dadlani… and the best song of the album “tashan mein” grows on u just because of the rustic vocals of vishal… n i think they used salim’s vocals cuz they were trying to churn out a fusion of sorts.

Arre guys chill, keep listening to these songs (or FM, TV will make you listen) over and over again, and you’ll start liking them. yehi to hota hai aajkal music ke naam pe..

Don’t like either. Tashan could have been a superb soundtrack, but for all the so-called experimentation, it falls quite flat. The tunes quite simply, lack zing- or Tashan for that matter.
