Bhram : An Illusion.
‘Film’ is an optical illusion. Life, an illusion as well… Maya. I like illusions…They help me survive. I like films more than I like life. Sometimes even when they don’t have a beginning, a middle and an end. I prefer ones that have a middle then a beginning again the middle and then the end…
I often prefer the films of others to my own. But then I don’t know if their makers intended them to turn out the way they finally happened to. Or did they too like them better while they were still unborn… Yet in the stage of conception, holding promise of greatness, lovingly, carefully crafted, virgin, on clean sheets of white paper.
I like the films I make much more, before I begin making them. Then the problems set in and the energy that comes on, as if includes deception, which was neither envisaged, nor bargained for.. Finally when it’s all over, I stand back and observe the flaws and the imperfections along with the stuff I got right. Not so bad I say to myself. They resemble me. Far from perfect, but not without their strengths. Battle scarred, yet managing to hold their own in the face of countless assaults and oppositions.
I have no idea when it all began for me, but my earliest memories go back to about age eleven, when books I’d read, suddenly seemed to be moving images..the recollection of having turned pages, missing, yet the story having unfolded pictorially.
As a teenager my days were spent watching three shows a day, back to back, sometimes the same film if I liked it enough. When all the films in theatres were exhausted, the video library was my haunt.
My family had resigned itself to my bohemian ways and idiosyncrasies. Dad realized soon enough, that depriving me of films, watching or working, was as if denying me oxygen. He took me on as apprentice ( he had categorically stated that I had to begin from the lowest rung of the ladder and earn my way to the top) and I began practically living and sometimes even sleeping in studios.Always charged up..I could work non-stop for upto four days and nights without a bother.
Next step.. a ‘lowly’ Asstt.Director’, hungry for knowledge of the craft. I would ‘poke my nose’(as often referred to) in all departments of filmmaking, take on as many responsibilities as possible, handling jobs that normally required several people, and generally curious about any and everything that could accelerate my growth. The noisy, dusty studio environs and the smell of celluloid in film editing rooms, had become my life support.
Which is why it came as a rather pleasant surprise when at a music sitting recently, Pritam, my music director informed me that during his course at the Film and Television Institute Of India (FTII) one of their professors often quoted my work and spoke in detail of my films, shot taking and technique. An institution, quoting a self taught technician was humbling, to say the least.
Continuing with my days as an asstt…. Photography happened to me courtesy an ‘ace’ cinematographer (whom I don’t wish to name), who tried to discourage my interest in the subject, as he felt it did not concern me.
I had approached the ‘ace DOP’(Director of Photography) whom I greatly admired and put forward a query regarding the characteristics of the lens being used that day. He turned to look at me disdainfully as if I had stepped beyond my limits and dipped my hand into his pocket.. The scorn in his eyes and the sarcasm in his voice stung me, when he said ..“apna kaam karo, tumhaare bas ki baat nahin hai yeh !”
The Director joined in and remarked “ He is more interested in photography than he is in Direction”. I was so shattered by this comment that I decided I did not wish to work under a director who did not seem to understand that without camera there could be no ‘film’, and that the camera was an essential tool, and if a director did not learn everything there was to learn about it, he would never be able to use it effectively or tell a story visually. Direction and cinematography… How could the two be divorced?
I walked out, determined to never again be dependant on another for knowledge of my craft. I bought a used still camera, from my savings and some books on photography and equipment for a dark room at home and began doing it myself.
Shoot in the day.. process and print at night. I was exhilarated.. felt totally in control, in that little dark room, watching the image as it formed and came to life exactly as the picture I had lit, shot, conceived.
I shot everything. Nature, cityscapes, portfolios industrial and fashion, with a passion. However the need to know if I was any good was overpowering. So, I prepared a portfolio of these pictures, summoned up courage and went to meet Mitter Bedi, world renowned photographer, who had his studio behind the Taj Hotel. After waiting outside for a good hour or so, I finally got to step into his office. I requested him to advise me. He took a long, hard look at all of the pictures, some repeatedly and finally said ” Show me your bad pictures..these are excellent..can’t improve on them”..Trying my best to hide my joy behind a stiff demeanour, I left from there for the first time having tasted appreciation for my work..wanted to throw my arms up in the air very much like Shashi Kapoor had done in my Uncles film.Jab Jab Phool Khile and the song..”Oof Oh Khuda”..I could safely consider myself a professional photographer.
Soon after I began working for Vilas Bhende a renowned photographer to brush up on Fashion photography..I assisted him for three months on shoots. On one such,I used a net to dodge the light off a tea cup which was flaring… a technique prevalent in film lighting but unheard of in still photography… The effect pleased Vilas who said”Where were you all this while?” It felt good and encouraged me towards going deeper intothe study of this medium. I was called by the editor of ‘Stardust” be on their panel and carry out special photo features for them, after they saw the snaps in an actors portfolio..but I politely declined..I wanted to be a film maker..this was only a learning process…and also a means to buy the camera of my dreams.. Nikon.
One day while leafing through a magazine on photography, I saw an advertisement for Nikon, in which a model was shown posing before the camera. The view finder had been removed to show the image on the ground glass. The lens was a 50mm, The image on the ground glass showed a head and shoulder magnification. Apparently, all was perfect.. a great camera, a great model, a great picture.
But I noticed something terribly wrong. While the model was at a distance of about 5ft. the lens was focussed at infinity. Someone in the advertising had fucked up. I immediately cut out the ad and pointing out the mistake in a covering letter, mailed it to Nikon Japan… I had done my service to my favourite camera.. though I still did not own one.
I had forgotten all about the incident when about six months later I opened the door to see the postman holding a parcel for me. I was a little puzzled as to its contents since it was intricately packed. On opening it, I have no words to explain the feeling that engulfed me. Inside lay a brand new black Nikon .. a gift from the Nikon Company, with a letter of thanks acknowledging the faux pas I had pointed out.
I knew then a hundredfold strongly that my life was inextricably woven with a camera..Or was it.. with an illusion??

Inspiring!!
Hi Pawan:
Now this is ace. a completely absorbing post. When finished it seemed like story published in Reader’s Digest, with full of surprise elements. Maya may be a factor in life but often its mixed with passion because passion sometimes carries us away from reality and perhaps then hard work, determination and thirst to get the desired thing brings unimagined. A day comes when we suddenly get up very early in the morning, filled with hope, energy and a little nervousness and lot of happiness and belief on existence of ours as well as of life.
Wow! Thats some real passion!
Film is fusion of all the art mediums. Director’s job is to tell a story by moving objects in time and space. A director could come from various art forms may be music, literature, visual, performing arts etc. But as a film maker one has to be visually strong. One should be able to visualize the camera and even light setup. The type of film (ISA speed), lens, camera angles, framing etc should come as a second nature. That is the real fun of making films! I have heard good directors talk in terms of no. of stops they need on actors left and right cheek! May be thats why Hollywood has amazing directors. In Bombay I have a feeling lot of directors do not venture out into other fields, very few of them may be. Abroad most of them (coming out of film schools)work as gaffers, grips, camera operators before becoming directors.
Pawan ji I am amazed and appreciate the fact that by looking at the picture you were able to tell that it was not a 50mm lens! Must had been a 30mm or even a wide lens:)
Did you get a chance to do Cinematography in any of the films?
Would you like to handle all the departments in a film by yourself? Isnt that some kind of passion!
The tasks of various department is to concive Director’s vision. A good director might as well be the head of them!
- Very Inspiring Read Indeed… Thanks for this Pavan. Isn’t it amazing the stuff that is thrown in the path of a genuine & honest desire for learning. Well your post definitely have made me kick my laziness and sign up for the Photography class that I’ve been planning to take for the last 2 years.
It reminded me the photgraphy class, which I audited at my school, then bought a Nikon Camera and madly started shooting anything I could lay my hands on. There was a time I would roam around with the camera around my neck:) It was so much fun!
This was beautiful to wake up to this morning.
I will admit to knowing nothing of your movies or work, but I am now a major fan of your writing.
You remind me why I am always in love and at peace while working on a film - one of the biggest reasons being the opportunity to learn from people like you who are passionate and creative and curious….
LOVING IT!! pavan, your statement:
“Direction and cinematography… How could the two be divorced?”
so true, but a double-edged sword. as a director, if you start talking about the techniques of a camera, lenses et al, isn’t the cinematographer/DP now reduced to simply a cameraman? would the cinematographer feel insulted by the fact that a director knows just as much, if not more, about a camera and its operations? in that sense, wouldn’t the DP feel like his skills aren’t being utilized?
i feel this to be the case with editing too.. an editor is essentially called the 2nd director, and why not? after all, if the director creates the pieces of the story, it’s the editor who puts it all together. but same thing… double-edged sword. it’s hard to come across people that are 1-man filmmaking machines.. i’ve personally worked with a guy who directs, acts, produces, composes music, edits, DPs, and i have no idea how he does it all with such ease. so hats off to you too pavan!
Now! I had a movie rolling in my mind all the time I was reading this…I could see the expression on you face when you got the camera. Feels good…feels really good when I see people putting their heart into their passion…something they always wanted to do even if they had to struggle. All I can say is I appreciate and respect them from core of my heart.
At the same time I question myslef…what is that you are doing..sitting and appreciating them..what about what you wanted to do? No answer..only excuses….I better get out from here..before I die of my own escapism
Respect!! Respect!!! Respect!!! Very inspiring..Just given me a thought for my next post…Keep it coming Pavan.. we are loving it over here
Inspiring! Educational! Introspective!
scientia est potentia et scientia est dementia.
Looking forward to reading more about the Maya.
Hey guys,
really touched by the comments!!
Am a tad busy..
will respond to each post asap..
Thanks
What a read..! I could visualise the whole thig as I was reading it. Fantastic! Keep them comin!!
Thanks Drupad..your ‘inspiring’..inspires.
Hi RK,
Thanks..I once knew another Rk who would have had a better life with your kind of insight into Maya and passion.
Hi Manjit,
You seem to have a passion for cinema. An artist can improve on his work tremendously with the use of technology as it is a great tool which can enhance the expression of ideas and thoughts. But, technique must remain unobtrusive and not be obsessive. I subscribe therefore to the ideology that a film maker must master all aspects of film craft and be adept at the skills required in all departments, but I do not feel the need to personally handle every portfolio as it would not allow me to be objective, which a director must be at all times.
I prefer to choreograph multiple talents of my team towards a singular vision that finally makes for a richer ‘film’.
Photography like all other arts is something that keeps you ‘learning’ as long as you wish to…and each time you ‘learn’ something new it is like ‘the first time’
Hi Oz,
Great gains are made only after great pains..I am glad to know that you have decided to take up Photography. I assure you that it is one of the most rewarding skill you can choose to perfect. It is an immensely creative art with a technical complexity that is at once engaging and stimulating.Best of luck!
Hi T,
Thanks..
When you involve yourself in a pursuit after your heart, you are naturally ‘at peace’ with yourself and everything around you. Knowledge and the opportunity to learn is also all around..enrich yourself.
Hi Striker,
Fortunately for me I have worked with a great variety of DoP’s and had extremely stimulating and rewarding working relationships due to the fact that Director and Cameraman were on the same page.
Free exchange of information enhances the outcome besides making the process exciting. It is always a challenge to work with people who are knowledgable in their field. I presume this should be the situation whenever there is a healthy rapport between professionals.Ego should never be allowed to hinder creativity.
Hi Sudha, Thanks.
If you have got to the point where you realise that you are indulging in escapism, it wont be long before you move on and get down to realising your goals..Best of Luck
Hi Om
Thanks Thanks Thanks..with readers like you I am sure to keep it coming.:)
Hi WB,
Thanks..
Looking forward to writing myself..will surely do soon.
Hi Nits,
Thanks..Since you seem to have a good visual sense, maybe you should take up a career in film or advertising..if you already have not done so.
Pawan ji, Your comments are so insightful! It makes me feel you are spritual, emotional (all creative people are!) and off course very passionate about the craft of film making. Do the above mentioned qualities (been spritual n emotional) conribute towards becoming a Director?
Do you think luck plays an important role in film industry?
I am sorry if the questions sound weird but thats what I felt and tought of putting them online.
Maya….. is a spritual concept.Spritually it is defined as anything and everything thing, which takes one away from the thought of God.
Passion is also a form of Maya. Maya is not limited to money and wealth. Even father’s love for his children, which causes hindrance in remembering the allmighty is termed as Maya.
But again talking spritually a man does not have any control over what he his doing. Every single thought is given by the lord himself. So if you feel passionate its because he wants you to feel that way.
Same way Bhram can be termed as Maya.
Hey Manjeet,
I do not know whether I possess the attributes you have quoted..but I would certainly aspire to do so.
Yes..your nature and morality is certainly reflected in your work. Hence given that there is the presence of talent, ‘those’ qualities would make for a good director.
Destiny plays a role in the lives of us all, regardless of our professions. But faith in your own destiny combined with perseverance and hard work should be the operating Mantra for anyone.
On the subject of ‘maya’ I feel that not just ‘Bhram’ but also ‘Brahma’ is Maya..just as much as you and me. Reality is relative.
While it is true that passion and emotions is a part of our ‘gunas’, yet we are also pure consciousness that has the power to discern and choose what passion will dominate our lives and which intuition will be our guiding force.
But I am no Deepak Chopra…:)
Hi Pawan,
You - Shekhar Kapoor - Vinod Khanna .
Just curious to know if there has been any kind of satsang of you three or can it happen?
This will bring out something astonishing to read, to listen and to watch.
Hi Rk,
Shekhar Kapur certainly is the kind of person anyone would like to exchange thoughts and ideas with. Vinod Khanna, I have known briefly, during his ‘Rajneesh phase’. He too has been constantly’in search’.
Since one cannot contrive a meeting to happen, one must leave it to chance and destiny..if it is meant to, it will.:)
Hi Pawan,
Did you ever met Osho Rajneesh in person like Vijay Anand, Vinod Khanna, Mahesh Bhatt and Shekhar Kapur met?
This is true that Shekhar presents a multifacted personality. Its quite interesting to read his discussion with astrophysicist Piet Hut.
According to Lord Mahaveer, if a action is started then it will go to end no matter how long it takes in this process. When your mind has allowed a thought for such a meeting then it will happen in future.
Taking impression from your mails about your work and nature I feel that a work may unite all three of you. A work based on theme like “The Zahir” (by Paulo Coelho). Only Shekhar and you kind of directors can do justice to such a subject and Vinod is perfect fit for such subject.
Manjit:
True Nature of a person comes under Maya or not?
Passion can match with true nature or not?
Re: Luck is a factor associated with every field not only with film industry and perhaps more in film industry. But Nature of Man(mankind)decides even his luck. Some say luck wuck all is rubbish and only hard work, clear vision etc are the things. These are the things prevailed with modern day’s management then what about Dev Anand. Do we find more focussed, energetic, hard working film maker in hindi films than him? And its also not the case that he makes bad films than B and C grade films made in Industry. So his perception about his own presence in every film is hindering him to make a film which many people can see? Or his pesent day’s image that Dev Anand makes crap is responsible for this? If former is the case then he is also victim of his Nature which is stopping him good fortune.
Vinod Khanna: he was good actor, and perhaps most attractive male hero at his time but could he sustain that? Did he get that kind of success which could have compelled him to be focussed on cinema only. No his mind was in to spirituality and he experimented with that desire. ??`
what do you think
RK: It would be convinient to start believingthat everything is predetermined and there is absouletly nothing a man can do himself! There is an interesting story about a man who claims to a saint that he has controls his own destiny. The saint answers its your ‘Brahm’. The saint says,” stand on one leg”. The person proves and stands on one feet. Then he asks, “now stand with pulling up the second leg”. The man is speechless! The saint explains to him that you can not even stand according to your wish its the allmighty who controls it.
About nature of a person related to his/her passion: Try to visualize that God has already written your screenplay. He is the creator! You as a character have fixed traits, which includes your nature by the means of which your journey will unfold!
Its again Maya, which makes you compare success or failure. Can you term Dev Anand and Vinod Khanna as failures? Does successful means wealth, fame or recoginition in a particular field? The soul has to go through 84 lakhs of rebirths and then it attains ‘Nirvan’. That is the real success! Everything else is meaningless. All living beens are equal, you dont know how many rebirths the celebrities have to take? May be you r more successful than them:)
The people who attain Nirvan are at a different level alltogether. They are not bothered by the earthly things. They dont care if they die penniless and without any recoginition.
There are high n lows in everybody’s life.
Been spritual does not change your screenplay but gives you the courage to accept it. As a director/actor been spritual might give a good understanding of life, which would help in the profession but definitely not make one succesful!
Manjit:
This story belong to Prophet Mohd. his disciple Ali.
I am not saying everything is fixed or predetermined by someone. What I wanted to discuss: There is some true nature of everyone. Not that we are always with that true nature but often we sees glimpses of that very nature and we feel satisfied and whatever you call in those moments. We have no competetion etc at those moments and whatever we are doing is the real thing before us. But rest of the time we may compete with others. I dont classify Dev Saab or Vinod Khanna as faliure. I tried to say opposite that both do what they feel to do good. Vinod’s competetitive gene could have asked him to stay in filmdome when he was at the peak of his career but he had another passion, another search and he left everything for that search. He came back though and we see suddenly a decline in his hunger towards filmi career. Now he was more cool in his appearance but perhaps that was not suitable for film career. Would that he would have played role of Dayawan before 1980 then I dont think anyone would have doubted about his acting ability to play any role. Dev Saab does not bother abt success or failure. He is at that stage and age of his life where others cant influence him as he has seen life in depth. All his idols would have been died and now he is alone with his own understanding towards life. I always respect this man’s courage, attitude.
A progressive human mind cant remain in any of the attachment be it wealth, fame, knowledge. It has to get boredom and thus steady state in last to get acceleration for another voyage in new area.
Again question arises: does passion always carries us towards our centre?
RK: Passion again is a state of mind. As long as you have passion for a particular thing you will be pulled towards it. But it takes no time for the state of mind to change, there can be so many reasons.
The so called nature, thoughts etc are predetermined or say you are born with.
Until n unless you realise the ultimate truth these type of questions will keep on arising!
gr8 words of wisdom! loved it!:)
Hey Pavan, fantastic to see u got a blog going, didnt know u were this net savy, considering your my director, and u write pretty well,:)anyway hope v get more visitors checking ur blog out,am on for sure.So we start shooting 28th right?Looking forward to it\:d/
Dino: are you really Actor and model Dino Morea?

It will be wonderful for PFC. please think and go ahead!
Hi Pawan:
please ask some of your star casts of Brahm and technical team to share their experience also here. Some of them may like to share their thoughts. It really will be a fantastic gift from your side to PFC.
Waiting eagerly for your next post!!!!
- RK, that’s Dino writing… confirmed with Pavan.
Welcome aboard Dino…It is always such a great pleasure to have people like you, Pawan, Anurag, Suparn,Rajkumar, hell….everybody…. to be on the board and sharing your experiences…
trying to tickle some funny bones..
Dino… Shot Ready…Take 1 Scene 1…and Your Articles….Lol!!!!!
Hey Dino,
Good to see you here man…and nice to know that you will be here regularly..despite broken arm and all that..Yeah there’s lots more I do besides shoot.. latest on the list is blogging:)
See you at the shoot..Be good:-w
Hi RK,
Thats a good idea..I will certainly take your suggestion to the unit of Bhram.I have been tied up of late..but will write a post asap..
In response to your earlier post, I have only read a little of Bhagwan Rajneesh and heard a few of his tapes.I confess that he had a hypnotic quality. I have read Paul Coelhos ‘Alchemist’..will surely make it a point to read ‘The Zahir’..and try and see why you fel it would be so perfect for me to direct:)
Hi Pavan
What RK has suggested is a real good idea. It will truly be a wonderful experience if we can get your team to be a part of PFC by them sharing their thoughts, etc.
Hey Oz!!
You are bringing amazing star cast to PFC: Now Dino is joining it.
Thanks man!
Pavan: Sorry for spelling your name as Pawan!! Thanks for overlooking this spell mistake. Actaully one of friend used to write his name as Pawan and our eyes are so blind when words are concerned that we read first and last letter only and rest mind assumes itself.
“The Zahir” I read in last december and as soon as I finished the book I was filled with the visual impact of the story and novel and first name, who could make a justified film, occured to me, was of Shekhar.
And then I read your posts here and I got the glimpse that this book can satisfy the director inside you. Every film maker needs a certain kind of story which satisfy his creative hunger and establishes also his kind of brand. Zahir can be India’s truely international film.
Hi everyone, yup its me the same guy who models and acts, thanks for the sweet welcome,i think this is amazing to have so many people involved, pavan fab idea,i guess once we start filming,we could post pics and give all an insight to how we work.
Guys pavan is making a really nice film, lets hope this one works, does everyone know or rather have a jist o f whats itss all abt?
Hi Dino!
Welcome to the PFC. Its really nice of you to put second comment and your willingness to continue your interaction with the cinema fans gathered here. Thats wonderful idea to put pics taken during shooting of the Film. and something about the real work and events happening at the sets would be another wonderful advantage. Sadly

Dino: Hi

————————————————–
Q:
BELOVED MASTER,
I FEEL SHOCKED WHEN YOU USE THE WORD ‘FUCK’.
WHAT TO DO?
Osho :
Sargamo, it is one of the most beautiful words.
The English language should be proud of it.
I don’t think any other language has such a beautiful word.
One Tom from California has done some great research on it.
I think he must be the famous Tom of Tom, Dick and Harry fame.
He says: One of the most interesting words in the English language today is the word ‘fuck’.
It is one magical word: just by its sound it can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love.
In language it falls into many grammatical categories.
It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John), and as a noun (Mary is a fine fuck).
It can be used as an adjective (Mary is fucking beautiful).
As you can see there are not many words with the versatility of ‘fuck’.
Besides the sexual meaning, there are also the following uses:
Fraud: I got fucked at the used car lot.
Ignorance: Fucked if I know.
Trouble: I guess I am fucked now!
Aggression: Fuck you!
Displeasure: What the fuck is going on here?
Difficulty: I can’t understand this fucking job.
Incompetence: He is a fuck-off.
Suspicion: What the fuck are you doing?
Enjoyment: I had a fucking good time.
Request: Get the fuck out of here!
Hostility: I am going to knock your fucking head off!
Greeting: How the fuck are you?
Apathy: Who gives a fuck?
Innovation: Get a bigger fucking hammer.
Surprise: Fuck! You scared the shit out of me!
Anxiety: Today is really fucked. And it is very healthy too.
hey guys, that Fuck thing is awesome, i remember trippin on it like last year at work. thnx for puttin it, RK.
Dino, good to see you hear more often
Dino u bugger, I see now you’ve started showin up late for shoots..You hadnt come so I left…better not do that on ‘Bhram’…!
For the benefit of all who are not familiar with Dino’s ‘italian’ upbringing, this was his ’sophisticated best’ Queens English..Dont even try to imagine how we are face to face..right buddy>:)
Hello Pavan,
Am truly touched by this article and also inspired..to say the least. It has brought out my own shortcomings to the fore.Your passion is unmistakable. Looking forward to seeing ‘Bhram’..I have been to your site as well.
All the Best..
Respects ^:)^^:)^^:)^
