Biased Oscar Summary!!

Hi Folks,

Had the good fortune of watching the Oscar’s in the SAAFA Co-Founder’s Projector, where the screen was the entire length and bredth of the war and in keeping with the ‘Green’ mood, only vegetarian food was served and wine was allowed, beer and other alcohol was not (just fine with me since I drink one glass of wine per by weekly period). The obvious advantage of the Projector was that one could see all the plastic surgery that goes on in Hollyland.

So here is the report (not an objective one by any stretch)

COngratulations go to Mexico. A country that dominated the Oscar’s, right from the brilliant filmmakers (yes plaural) to the technicians, to the artists…amazing effort guys keep it up. I am always for the underdog and when you have three directors in the running in the SAME year, it makes us as viewers root for you….and no it does not matter that Pan did not win, what matters is that the film movement in Mexico did indeed win….and Pan won in a whole host of other categories.

Keeping my “anti MBA and anti there is a system for everything approach to life” I loved the spontaneous speeches as opposed to the prepared one’s. Hence Whittaker’s (best actor in a male), the best Michael Arndt (original) and Helen Mirren (actress in a leading role) were the most heart wrenching.

The corporate speech given by the lifetime achievenment winner, was jsut that a prepared corporate speech which had no heart!!

Speech given by Jennifer Hudson could only be understood by her.

The shadow dance performances were outstanding and as was the music (after all classical only continues to survive because of the Oscar’s)

Deepa Mehta was seen for a minute and whoever did her make up and look needs to quickly find another job

I love upsets and hence when the German film beat out Pan that was amazing ….and no did not feel sorry for Water, it was the fifth best film anyway to start with.

Barbara Walters after the show was depressing and I counted at least “20″ artificial features just on her face.

Ellen during the show was outstanding I did not count a single artificial gesture, everything came from the heart.

Al Gore’s win proves that filmmaking is dead as a concept, you need POWERPOINT slides to win Oscar’s nowadays.

About bloody time Marty won, but Departed as best picture leaves a lot to be desired about the movies that came out of 2007.

Now why were not ALL BOLLYWOOD films nominated for BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY?

This time the Oscar became less larger than life and more a “common person’s event” and no one complained, matter of fact made it way more enjoyable, despite Royalty (The Queen) winning.

One desi name was mentioned, a certain Malhotra was thanked by the Short (Live Action) winner and when Helen went to receive her Oscar it was mentioned that an Indian Palmist had said to her that her best would come after age 40…….that Indian Plamist was PEER SYED SAHEB, please call 044-420420420 for his advice (ok I made that part up)

Times have changed, Melissa Ehteridge (SHE) thanked HER WIFE (more power to you lady!!)

Sincerely,

Vivek ”who cares about the Oscar’s …..yeah right!!” Kumar

    Err..corporate speech with no heart?
    Ellen’s gestures were from heart?

This whole “from the heart ” aka “dil se kaam lo..dimag se nahin” is oh-so-overrated..dont u think?

Helen Mirren’s speech was heart wrenching?? why??

  3. mainak on February 26th, 2007 1:49 pm

This year was also England’s year.
QUEEN, CHILDREN OF MEN, LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, VENUS.

CHILDREN of men should have won best picture, best actor, best cinematgraphty & best director. It wasnt even nomited for the big ones. I guess Hollywood thought it was a science fiction action movie & nothing else.

But i’m sure 10 years from now thats the only movie people will talk about from 2007.

Yeah Helen’s speech was totally boring…
Elln was equally boring & not funny.
Plz get Billy back next year.

    “Al Gore

  7. striker on February 27th, 2007 7:00 am

varun, i love watching good documentaries from time to time.. “supersize me”, “this film is not yet rated”, “fahrenheit 9/11″ are some examples of good ones that didn’t use a classroom with a lecture environment and a slideshow to present their material. this was the sole reason i started dozing off during “an inconvenient truth”. i felt like i was back in class again.. and if a filmmaker is gonna do that, he better have one hell of a speaker who can keep his audience engaged in the topic. al gore just didn’t do it for me.. however relevant and important the topic may be and however blasted i get for saying it.. i’m all for the film’s cause.. but i’m sure the film could’ve conveyed the message in a more interesting fashion.. (don’t ask me how, i’m not a documentary filmmaker!)

as for what i expected from it, i can honestly say i expected something that didn’t put me to sleep! i’m planning to give it a second watch, just to confirm my suspicions.

and for anyone who hasn’t seen “this film is not yet rated”.. put it on your queue now!!

  9. varun on February 27th, 2007 7:52 am

@ Striker if people dont like going to school and find it boring they definetly are not gonna like it. But if you consider big picture there are many people who like to know about global warming and its effects with the help of a one and half hour documentary. I dono about others but i did like it and I’m not sure whether it deserved to win oscar or not as i havent seen others.

    Here is the acceptance speech

    ACCEPTANCE SPEECH
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Rick. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Please, please. Thank you. Thank you. Could you double-check the envelope, please? I mean, I’m overwhelmed with this honor from the Academy and also the honor of being presented by my old, old friends. We go back 37 years. I’m so moved, so moved.

I’ve got thank Warner Bros.’ Alan Horn and Dan and Jeff and I’ve got to thank our producers Brad Grey and Graham King and Mac Brown and my old friend Joe Reidy, we’re working for 20 years. And Rick Yorn and John Lesher and Chris Donnelly and Ari Emanuel. And that crazy script by Bill Monahan that got me in all this trouble in the first place. And Andrew Lau’s original film from Hong Kong, the wonderful Asian cinema. And Michael Ballhaus on camera. And Howard Shore’s wonderful score. And my old, good friend Thelma Schoonmaker. Ellen Lewis for her casting.

And so much of this belongs to the cast, I can’t tell you. Jack Nicholson for his courage and his inspiration. Leo DiCaprio, six-and-a-half year’s work we’ve done together. I hope another 12, another 15. Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone and Vera Farmiga and Marty Sheen.

I just want to say too that so many people over the years have been wishing this for me. Strangers. You know, I went walking in the street, people say something to me. I go in a doctor’s office, I go in a whatever. Elevators, people saying, “You should win one, you should win one.” I go for an X-Ray, “you should win one.” I’m saying, “thank you.” Friends of mine over the years and friends who are here tonight are wishing this for me and my family, I thank you. This is for you.

And I also want to thank my daughter Cathy, who is here tonight, who worked on the film. And Domenica, my wife Helen, and our little Francesca, who’s seven years old who’s watching right now. Francesca, stay up for another 10 minutes but then jump up and down and make a lot of noise at the hotel. Okay. I’ll see you in the morning. Thank you.

i think i may have given off a wrong impression about not liking school (they were my favorite years).. i guess i should’ve said “i felt like i was back in one of my boring classes again.. we’ve all had those. and this documentary felt like one of them. i just think there could’ve been more creative ways to present the material instead of having a guy stand up there and talk for an hour and a half.

more on “west bank story” with ravi malhotra, the LA-based producer..
