Biwi O Biwi(1981):: A Hilarious Comedy of Errors!

RK Films, established by the Great Raj Kapoor in late 40s, produced only one, out and out comedy film, Biwi O Biwi, in 1981 and RK films should be showered with praises for making this film. Kapoor family had earlier also a kind of comedian hero in the form of Raj Kapoor but his comedy was always intermingled with the pathetic situations in which RK is always sieged and they were more toward in the direction of Charlie Chaplin’s films. Raj Kapoor’s eldest son Randhir Kapoor’s entry in to the films, could be said as starting of comic hero which later Govinda, pursuded ahead and got more success than any of his predecessors. Randhir Kapoor can be said as modified branch of comedy of Rajendra Nath, his maternal uncle. Only thing is Rajendra Nath was fully devoted to comedy and Randhir Kapoor started as a hero but both the actors used their bodies too much in producing the comic expressions on screen. Randhir Kapoor has been very good in comedy based roles, this is different thing he could not get much success as an actor but his films of 70s are examples of good entertainment.
With Biwi O Biwi, RK films gave chance to Rahul Rawail as a director, who later gave us films like Betaab, Arjun, Dacait, Samundar, Anjaam etc. Mostly he made films with Sunny Deol. His name was associated with Kumar Gaurav’s debut film Love Story also. Perhaps he assisted Rajendra Kumar as Asstt. Director and many people believed that actually he had directed most of the film.
It happens many times that a film is made for some actor but when film comes out of editing room then it’s devoted to another actor because s/he has given far better performance than other actors in the film. Same happens with Biwi O Biwi also. It has Randhir Kapoor in leading role but film is completely devoted to Sanjeev Kumar. Like Angoor (1982) SK plays double role here also and BOB, is a treat to watch his double roles. He is outstanding in the role of Col. Mangal Singh. Give him a get up and The Genius SK, would turn in to an entirely different person.
Writer of many Guru Datt Films, Abrar Alvi, has written dialogues of BOB and his skill of writing is so visible from his apt dialogues which increase the effect of comedy in the scenes.
Randhir Kapoor plays the role of a young singer Chandar Mohan, who lives in a small town and his father, played by Om Prakash, calls him as a Bhand, because he thinks Chandar is a young man good for nothing and he cant do anything in life because he likes singing which has no value in the eyes of Om Prakash.
To increase the problems in the life of Chandar, his horoscope reveals that he is severely suffering from mars effect. Chandar desperately wants to get married ASAP but his Mangali status is stopping him to get married. Chandar sings his conditions through the song,
Gori ho Kali ho, ya nakhre wali ho,
Kaisee bhee dulhan dila de,
hathon mein tere sabkee hai dori
apna bhee chakar chala de, (Kishor Kumar)

He meets Gafur Miyan (Deven Verma) who works in a theatre in Bombay. When Gafur tells Chandar that he has two wives then Chandar requests to go to Bombay along with him. When Gafur asks Chandar’s father, he replies,” Mujhe koi aitraj nahin hai, Dekhta hun ye bhand wahan kya gul khilata hai”.

Chandar promises Gafur miyan that he will reach railway station at time after praying in a temple but like a true cartoon character he is late and runs after the train which has already left the station. Some how he climbs the train and they reach to Bombay central. A coolie, Sanjeev Kumar in get up, picks their luggage and while Chandar and Gafur walk slowly, and coolie is lost in the crowd. We find that actually SK is a con man and now he changes his get up and becomes a taxi driver. Chandar and Gafur asks him about a Coolie No.10 and he tells them,” That Coolie is a thief and has stolen luggage of many people”.
Chandar does not concentrate on the rehearsal of the song and repeats again and again that Gafur should arrange a bride for him first and then he will be able to do practise. Gafur takes him to a marriage Bearuo where they meet Shashikala. Shashikala welcomes them and shower perfume and flowers on them. She says to Chandar,” Please put Rs 101 on my hand and if you find a girl from here, then you will have to pay us Rs 1001”.
Gafur,” Ab Itra lagakar Chuna to mat lagaiye”. Chandar promptly says,” lagaiye lagaiye jam kar lagaiye”. He has sole motive to get married as soon as possible and does not mind monetary loss.
Shashikala shows Chandar a photo album and he selects photo of a young girl and says that She should fix his match with this girl.
Shashikala takes album from him and sees the photo. She is shying and says,” But you are too young before me”. Puzzled Gafur peeps in to the album and sees the photo, chosen by Chandar and whisper to him,” Stupid, this is her own photo of 20 years ago when she was young”.
Chandar,” I thought, its photo of her daughter or niece. Means, she is still unmarried and she is trying to fix matches for others”.
Shashikala says with sigh,” There is darkness at the bottom of lamp”. To this Chandar says,” But here its all darkness in my case, please search a mangli girl for me”. Shashikala says that she will inform them as soon as she gets a suitable Mangali girl for him.
Chandar curses Gafur that he has not met a single girl in Bombay and Gafur says,” Its so easy to lure girls in Bombay”. He goes to a bus stop and drops a Rs 20 Note on ground near a girl and tells her that she had dropped her note. She says note does not belong to her and Gafur says as note is lying between them so it belongs to both of them and they should use it. Chandar sees that Gafur goes along with that girl in a taxi. He becomes happy with the trick and he finds that a beautiful girl (Yogita Bali) is standing on the bus stop. He goes near her and imitates Gafur’s act and drops a note on ground and says to Yogita Bali,” Madam, you have dropped down your Rs 20 note”. Yogita Bali sees the note and says,” Not 20 but 50 Rs note”. Chandar is disturbed but soon recovers his sense and says,” no problem, if its 50 Rs note, it belongs to us”. But by then Yogita Bali has picked up the note and stops a taxi. Chanadr reaches also towards taxi but Yogita Bali has already sat inside the taxi and closes the door. Chandar,” But Madam the note was lying between us”. Yogita Bali inserts note in her breasts and says,” But now its lying between me”. Chandar curses his foolishness and returns back where he is unable to concentrate on the singing and goes in a garden where he finds Asha (Poonam Dhillo) and her friend (Prema Narayan). Chandar is impressed by beauty of Asha and tries to make her friend but she and her friend thinks he is a joker. He listens that they are going to attend the show where he has to sing and he tries to tell them that he is the singer Chandar but they think he is mad to some extent. But at the show they find that its same Chandar who is singing and he sings well and wins the heart of Asha by his singing.
After the show Chandar is introduced to Nisha (Simi Grewal), the rich owner of theatre and she treats Chandar as her younger brother. Chandar meets Asha and her friend outside the theatre and when they are talking, Asha’s friend says,” Asha your daddy”. Chandar asks, daddy whose daddy?”. She replies,” Asha’s daddy Col. Mangal Singh”. Chandar,” Yahan bhee mangal”.
Col. Mangal Singh gets down from his car with his companion and orderly Veer Singh (Rajendra Nath) and approaches Asha and asks how was the program but he replies himself by saying,” how can a civilian program can be good. Hope it was bad”. Asha,” No Daddy it was very good”.
Col. Mangal Singh,” then perhaps music was done by army band as only army band can play good music. Civilions don’t know anything about music, kyon Veer Singh. Veer Singh always follows what his Col. Says and replies, yes Sir.
Col. Mangal Singh does not like civilions and he likes only army personnel. He thinks that he would marry his daughter Asha to a army officer. Though Colonel is retired but he lives his life as he is still active in the army. Same discipline he follows and thinks others will follow his orders. He likes to hear his praises and often tells others that he fought bravely on Burma front and often calls him as Burma front Colonel. Once Asha’s friend comes to pick her up for a picnic and she meets Colonel in the garden and he tries to tell her the stories of his Burma front and Asha comes out of the house and both the girls say,” we have heard it so many times”. Col. Says with astonishment,” but I have not even told this story to Veer Singh”. Veer Singh, did I tell you this story before? Veer Singh,” Sahib ek bar nahin ek hazar baar bata chuke hain”. Girls laugh and go away and Col. reminds Asha to come back before evening. He turns to Veer Singh and smiles with amusement and asks him,” What you were saying Veer Singh about Burma front”.
Col. finds out that Asha likes Chandar a civilion and he send Veer Singh as escort along with Asha. Chandar somehow manages to meet Asha and gets to know that Col. is taking Asha to Kashmir. Col. takes Asha to Kashmir and goes to meet Col. Hari Singh (Hari Shivdasani, FIL of Randhir Kapoor, father of Babita and maternal grandfather of Karishma and Kareena Kapoor). Two old friends meet with much enthusiasm and if nostalgia overwhelms them then future prospects that Col.Hari’s son is now Captain in Army, bring shining in the yes of Col. Mangal Singh. He likes Hari Singh’s tall and handsome son, Captain Manik but Asha does not like him and she tries to create her bad image before him. The scenes at the home of Col Hari Singh are full of comedy. Manik understands that Asha loves somebodyelse and he proposes to help her. When they come back, Asha reveals to Col. Mangal Singh that Capt. Manik is already married. Col. Mangal,” Hari, what I am listening, you kept me in dark”.
Col. Hari,” No Mangal, its not true”.
After some arguments they start quarrelling with each other and Col. Hari Singh orders his orderly, Sunder to throw luggage of Col. Mangal Singh outside the house.
For Col. Mangal Singh, Colonel Hari Singh has been transformed in to simply Hariaa… he shouts,” Hariaa, I will see you. I will search a better Captain for my daughter and who will drive a Jeep and not a motor cycle like your son”.
Chandar too reaches to Kashmir and meets Asha who introduces him to Captain Manik. Col. Mangal Singh, is practising the shooting and Chandar reaches there in the uniform of a Captain and he pretends to be a good shooter. Captain Manik shoots from the distance and Col. Mangal Singh thinks that Chandar has shot the target. He is very impressed and is more than happy to know that Chandar is a Captain and still a bachelor and above this he owns a Jeep. Capt. Manik shows as if he knows Chandar and addresses him as Capt. Chandar and asks how his Kumayun regiment is doing and Chandar replies,” Khub kama rahee hai”.
He thinks that now he can settle his score with Col. Hari Singh. Its a wonderful scene where Col. Mangal Singh is feeling happiness inside and his back is toward Chandar. SK makes Col. Mangal Singh here a dreamy man. A fantastic act.
But poor Chandar, Veer Singh gets a doubt that he has seen Chandar before also. Col. Mangal Singh says,” Veer Singh you might have seen him in newspaper, afterall he has won the army championship. He invites Chandar to club.
In the army club, he introduces Chandar to other army officers and tells all that Chandar has won the army championship of shooting and says that his would be son in law Capt. Chandar is a very witty man and he calls his kumayun regiment as kamaoo regiment. Col. Hari Singh, doubts and asks several questions about the championships. Col. Mangal Singh boasts,” Haria, why don’t you ask your son Manik, he knows Captain Chandar quite well and is a fan of his shooting skill”. Col. Hari Singh is stumped when his own son vows about credibility of Capt. Chandar but Chandar’s path is not free from hurdles. Another army officer asks him which regiment he belongs to and Chandar is exposed. He runs away but not before telling Veer Singh that he had seen him in the lift with Asha in Bombay.
But scene is not finished yet. Chandar could not inform fiasco to Gafur Miyan in Bombay and who reaches to Railway station in an Army Uniform to welcome Chandar and Col’s family. He thinks everything is fine and welcomes Colonel and introduces him as an army officer who is friend of Captain Chandar. Result, a powerful slip on his face by Col. Mangal Singh.
With this love drama, Director has another SK, in the form of Shankar. Shankar asks his girl friend Rina(Yogita Bali) to make friends with Nisha (Simi Grewal) so that money can be taken from her. Rina gets a job at Nisha’s place and she sees Col. Mangal Singh. She is astonished to see the similarities between Shankar and Col. Mangal Singh and she tells Shankar about Col. Shankar decides to follow Col. to study him so that later he can put on make up to pretend as Col. Mangal. He thinks he would do stealing and other crimes and people will think Col. Mangal Singh is doing this.
A huge dose of laughing is stored in the scenes where Shankar puts on a makeup and goes to club where Col. Mangal Singh is enjoying Billiard. He introduces him as Army person. How he gets to know that Col. always wears this special suit whenever he goes out. Col. says he owns 6 such suits and Shankar promptly says,” means if you are left with 5 then there is no problem?”. Col.” what?” I mean you never go to that room where people remove their clothes? Col,” O you mean Sauna” Shankar” no Sona(sleeping)”. Col. stares him but takes it as a joke and says, Ha ha ha, you are joking”. Well sometimes I go. And Shankar takes him there and during their talks, Col finds that Shankar is Commander in Nevy. He gets to know he has a son also who is not married and he is also an officer in Nevy. Col,” So Commander what your son does in Nevy”. Shankar,” He is Captain”.
What! Yells, Col. Mangal Singh and he stares at Shankar and asks, you the father is Commander and your son is Captain in nevy.
Shankar,” yes, so what”.
Because in Nevy, Commander is smaller in ranks than Captain”. You cheater you are trying to making me fool. He tries to catch Shankar but he runs away with Col’s suit.
Chandar is very depressed and Nisha advises him to offer his apologises to Col. Mangal Singh but he is not ready so Nisha goes there with Rani but Col. is very angry with Chandar and insults them. Chandar goes to Asha’s house and requests her grandmother (Dina Pathak) and she gives her blessings. Now Col. is opposing the Chandar but his mother is ready to accept Chandar, a civilian.
A pundit reveals here also that Asha is a true Mangali and she has to marry a Mangali boy otherwise her husband may die within a year. Col. Mangal Singh also visits Marriage bearuo of Shashikala and she thinks he wishes to marry and she tries to lure him. After a lengthy laughing scene Col. is able to make her understand that he has come to search a boy for his daughter.
On the other side Chandar knows that due to Mangli problem in his horoscope his marriage has been very difficult so he goes to a pundit and asks him to make a horoscope for him which does not have any mangle effect. He goes to Col.’s house happily with his new horoscope. But here scene is opposite and Asha’s grandmother declines his proposal to marry because he is not a mangali boy. Knowing that they need a Mangli boy, he again becomes happy and comes back with Shashi Kala, who tells Col. that Chandar is a mangali boy and he had approached her 6 months ago for a mangali girl.
Things could have become fine but story has Shankar, a look alike of Col. Mangal Singh. Shankar in the disguised form of Col Mangal Singh, takes money from Nisha that he has no money and he is ready to marry Asha with Chandar. He robs Chandar also as he does not recognise him. Chandar is surprised to see that Col. took away his watch, gold chain etc. Next morning when Col. goes out of his house, Shankar enters the house in the make up of Col. Chandar has come to meet Asha and her grandmother and when he sees Col. has come back he enters in a room and hides there. To his surprise he finds Col. steals things from his own house. After Col.( Shankar) again goes out he tells Asha and her grandmother that he had come here to complain about Col’s behaviour of last evening but he has no complaint now as Col. steals from his own house. Asha’s grand mother shows him exit door and situations become difficult for Chandar again.
In another twist, Rani becomes pregnant and Chandar sees Rani and Col. togther and he thinks Rani is pregnant with Col.’s child. He tells Nisha also that Colonel has made pregnant her staff member Rani and has denied to marry Asha with him. Nisha tells him that Col. has taken away 3 Lac Rs. Under the excuse that he has to arrange marriage between Asha and Chandar. Chandar becomes very angry. Shankar in the get up of Col. once again contacts Nisha and when she rebukes him he plays emotional drama and tries to give her back 50,000 Rs and says that Chandar is trying to tarnish his image because he is a lier. She melts again and says that she will give him more money but he should marry Asha to Chandar. When she is gone inside the room, Shankar goes inside other room and at the same time Chandar comes there with Col. Mangal Singh. Nisha gives Col. money and he asks her why she is giving him money. She says because you asked more money. Col. becomes very angry that why he would need money from him. At the same time, Nisha sees Shankar in other room and she is puzzled after seeing two similar looking persons.
Then starts a long chase to capture Shankar. Shankar is caught in the end but he is so clever that when police comes, he leaves his place and goes and stands at the place where Col. was standing till now. Everybody is confused again as who is real Col. Mangal Singh. Asha’s Grandmother is the person who can identify her true son.
Film is a laughing riot and except the long chase pre-climax scene film works very well. Chasing scene could be shortened to 5-7 minutes instead of 15- 20 minutes.
Sanjeev Kumar rules the film and though in Angoor also he plays double role but that double role is very different from the double role he plays in BOB. This difference reveals his brilliance in acting. He uses different facial expressions and voice to display different situations and moods of two characters he plays here. When everybody charges him that he is responsible for making Rani pregnant, then he becomes a child and asks his mother, Maan tum bhee? Sanjeev Kumar beats every actor in every scene. This is his film. He makes this comedy as one of the best comedy film made in Hindi cinema. BOB is not comic less than Parosan, Chalti Ka naam garhi, Half Ticket, JBDY, Angoor, Chachi 420, Hera Pheri etc. SK brings a classic touch to the film with his performance.
Randhir Kapoor does his best but when its SK show then little other can do to match the peak point. Same is true with Deven Verma and Rajendra Nath. All the three actors support SK in this film to make it a better comedy film. Simi Grewal, Yogita Bali and Poonam Dhilon are like fillers and they live their part well but focus is not on them. Om Prakash, albeit, shows his command over comedy in the 1 minute scene.
Rishi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor both appear for few moments in the film.
Sanjeev Kumar and Abrar Alvi’s sharp dialogues are the winner in the film. Wonder why Rahul Rawail did not try to make another comedy after making such a fine comedy film?

Music of RD Burman is ok type and can not be included in his good work, though two of the songs had become popular.
Gori ho kali ho and
sadiyon se duniyan mein ek hee to kissa hai, ek hee to ladki hai ek hee to ladka hai,

Never miss the opportunity to see this wonderful film.
An underrated diamond of comedy!!!!!

whenever i see him on screen, my heart is filled with immense pity for ranadhir kapoor,
whom we fondly refer to as bobble head. i am not sure what he has accomplished besides
marrying babita and producing karishma and kareena. kinda feel sorry for the guy – at one
point he must have been under tremendous pressure to prove himself in the khandani cinema business.

It was a good attempt. Why he does not make another film? :-w

Well about music, it’s above average methinks. The song “meri bulbul yuN na ho gul” is
very nice on ears as far melody and orchestration goes, leave aside the lyrics, as a
composer can not do anything about it. Being a Pancham fanatic myself, RK, your
comment about RDs music forced me write this :)
I don’t know the picturization of the above song as I am yet to watch the film, it’s
been added in the top of the list and thanks RK for that :)

Generally Pancham’s compositions are marred by bad picturization, average lyrics lately,
especially in the 80s and early 90s, for various flop movies and thus his tunes went
unnoticed considering a general public popularity, and now they are kinda collectors items.
Apologies for off-the-topic ranting, but just couldn’t resist myself commenting about Pancham’s music.

Nitin: Sorry to hurt feelings of your Pancham’s music lover heart/ears. Pancham Da did his best
compositions in the 70s and in 80s also he gave many wonderful compositions but its a pity that
his better works were not noticed because sometimes films were either flops or they were r
eleased after years. He gave so wonderful song” Roj Roj ankhon tale” in a chalu film like Jeeva.
Then he had Libas (is it released ever?). Its again pity that he got his first Filmfare for his sub
standard Sanam Teri Kasam( again comparing it with his own good standard) and it can be the
demand of the time as it was disco time and subject of film may demand such music.
But if we dont consider subject of the film for a minute and consider only music then he had given
far better music before. With that reference I had mentioned that music of Biwi O Biwi does
not match with his eternal compositions which he did in other films like Aandhi, Karvan, Izazat,Namkeen,
Libas, Hare Krishna Hare Ram. this list is long and may contain atleast 70-80 films or we may find atleast
one wonderful song in more than 100 films where he provided music.
He was among greats of hindi cinema’s music composers.Songs of Biwi O Biwi, may be suitable for the
subject of the film and that way 2-3 songs are fine but when we listen them as separate songs
(not part of films) then they dont fall in good work of Pancham da. Lyrics can be a reason because
there are atleast two lyricist Nida Fazli and Vithal Bhai Patel. Nida Fazli’s inclusion in RK films is a
    separate story in itself.
But most of the time Pancham Da’s music has been above the bounadries of lyrics and singer.
for example – Ek Ladki ko dekha to aisa laga from 1942-A love story, see the great composition
and its mismatched with the voice of Kumar Sanu, which brings limitations to the song. If it
was sung by Kishor Kumar it could have been included in top 100 songs ever sung in hindi
cinema but Kumar Sanu’s voice defines the age of otherwise ageless composition. Over the years
Song has been divided in to two parts, good composition of Pancham Da and average singing of
    Kumar Sanu.
Thanks a lot for brining RD Burman’s music in discusion:)

Nitin: Re: Nida Fazli’s inclusion in RK films. It
has a story. Nida Fazli used to travel daily in a
local train in bombay. Once he was with a poet or
writer came from other city. Both took the daily
train and in the train Nida saab met a person who
was working either AD in films or was associated
with film making. Anyway, that filmi person asked
Nida who is the gentleman and Nida saab, dont
know in which mood, said that gentleman is Ahmad
Faraz, the famous Pakistani poet ( Ranjish hi
sahi dil hee dukhane ke liye aa – Menhdi Hasan
saab). That man got down at his station and after
1 or 2 days when Nida saab was at his home, his
phone rang and when he recieved the phone, person
on other side asked,” kya mein Nida Fazli saab se
baat kar sakta hun”. Nida Fazli thought he had
heard this voice mnany times but he could not
identify immediately. he asked, mein Nida Fazli
hee bol raha hun, aap kaun saab bol rahe hain?
Adab Nida saab, Mein Raj Kapoor bol raha hun,
Suna hai Faraz saab pakistan se tashrif laye hain
aur bombay mein apke mehman hain. agar apko aur
unko aitraj na ho to hamare gareebkhane par ane
ka nyota sweekar karein, ek chhotee see mehfil
rakh lete hain”. Now Nida saab was stunned. he
never knew that his small joke will reach to this
stage that whole film industry would be knowing
and Raj Kapoor will call himself. He took
sometimee to get senses and then told the truth
that he had said this jokingly. Raj Kapoor
laughed heavily and then said,” Nida saab mein to
apko bada sanjeeda shayar samjhta tha aap to
bahut majakiya tabiyat wale shaksha nikle, Mein
ye baat hamesha yaad rakhunga. He said he would
use Nida Saab’s talent in any ofhis film. Some
years later he got a call from RK studio and he
was signed to write song/s for Biwi O Biwi. One
day he was sitting with RD Burman and Randhir
Kapoor and Raj Kapoor came there with sweets and
samosas in his hands. He distributed things among
all the people there. RD Burman had recorded few
songs of the films and Raj Kapoor listened the
composition of the song which which Nida saab had
written. Raj Kapoor asked Nida Fazli who had told
him the situation? Nida Fazli pointed towards
Randhir Kapoor. Raj Kapoor said, ek baar hamse
bhee situation sun lijiye. aaj sham ko apko vaqt
ho to hamaree kutiya par jarur padharein and he
left the place. Now RD Burman said to Nida Fazli
that its a problem if Raj saab, does not like the
lyrics then its difficult to record the song
today. Nida fazli went to Rk’s famous hut. Raj
saab welcomed him and first talked about his
childhood memories of Peshawar in Pakistan and
then suddenly he said,” See Nida saab, there was
a girl, there was a boy, they fell in love, There
is a boy, there is a girl, they fall in love,
there will be a boy, there will be a girl, they
will fall in love, This is the situation, kuch is
    tarah ka gana bana dijiye.
Nida saab thought and wrote the Mukhrha right
there” sadiyon se duniya mein ek hee to ladka hai
ek hee to ladki hai, jab bhee ye gaye pyar ho gaya.
    Raj saab said” thats it.:d

Nitin: RDB is the only music composer who sits exactly in the middle of the old generation

    his songs.:)
