BLACK FRIDAY-insecurities..

If you can’t beat them, do not join them..arrange to have them beaten..and how do you arrange that..by prayers? get God on your side? does he care? is he there?..rest of the industry wants you to help them grow, they don’t want you to grow..have i started believing in conspiracy theories..am i getting delusional again or am i reading too much into things..What is the art of survival? in the March of the Penguins, it says when the mother doesn’t get back on time with the food, the father abandons the baby to the cold winter and rushes to the ocean for its own survival..so should we abandon our children, our babies, our ideas, our dreams in order to survive..what is more important..me or my dreams..i am confused..
a question they always ask me about BLACK FRIDAY..what is your stand on the whole issue..i say we need to be more tolerant..but they counter,”your film does not say that” and i defend myself saying..it says that indirectly, read between the lines, it shows the futility of not having tolerance..
Do you really expect your audience to be intelligent enough to read between the lines, mr. kashyap..
Is their intelligence and not being sensitive, my responsibility..
Well, it is, if them not seeing your point of view causes trouble..
People who cause trouble are intelligent enough to see my point of view and distort it and miscommunicate it further ,and use for personal gains..
Now, who is right and who is wrong..isn’t it important to have such political incidents, the mass carnage that took place, to put all that happened in a format most watched i.e. cinema, to document it, to reach out, objectively, to the people and force them to think, to shame them, to provoke them to ask questions, to start a debate..isn’t it important to make a film like BLACK FRIDAY..
is that why you made the film mr. kashyap..didn’t you make the film so people will call you a great filmmaker..so they will applaud you,so they will praise you..
i don’t know..
you gotta know..
why did i made the film..i was affected by the book greatly..i had no notion of greatness..hell i just wanted to do it right..half the time i was insecure about my own political maturity..i made life hell for Arindam..i had so many constant doubts that he started getting doubts..at one point we were exchanging letters..showing it to other people for reassurance..there was so much pressure to be right that what seemed wrong was deemed wrong..there was no room for mistakes..

the notion that it was a great film was put into me by people..they started celebrating it so much, carrying us all in its wake..so when the fall came, it completely brought me down..somewhere down the line we were forgetting why we made the film..we were getting carried away with the reviews..with awards..we felt the world at our feet..we started making future plans and then the fate slapped us..slapped us hard..reminded us where we started from..reminded us of the time when arindam will run from one production house to the next and won’t find the money..it was the need to make this film, the passion to make it that drove us..
it was just arindam and chandramohan puppala and sometimes me..
there was one time, at the press meet after the MAMI screening that one journalist asked me,”do you think indian communalism is marketable, do you think the west will buy it”
I was insulted by the question..that journalist was a troublemaker..i told him that..but it got me thinking if people like that are writing for newspapers then why won’t people get incited..that particular journalist created further trouble, he went and instigated the accused, he went and even got mahesh bhatt on a platform where they wanted to get the film banned..later we found out one of his friends Salim Durrani was one of the accused..the man spread lies about the film..which it took us two years to clear..he got one of my director friends Tigmanshu Dhulia to call me and say if i wanted the film to be cleared there will be a payoff..i was furious..later that man used MAHESH BHATT to get to tarun tejpal to do a cover story on the police witness in the case(badshah khan) and prove him to be a liar and exonerate Salim Durrani..the editorial staff found inconsistencies with the story, so it was heavily edited and carried but not as a cover story..

His name was Ambrish or Amresh srivastava..
So my point is if a man has an agenda he will find anything to vilify you..
Now Black friday is releasing..self doubts and insecurities are coursing through my blood..but one thing i am damn sure about..no one can question the integrity with which black friday was made..

  5. Chaitanya Tamhane on January 30th, 2007 12:19 pm

Great post again. But I dont think your film was banned because of one person or even 3…But what the hell, the film is releasing and NOW is the time! Let bygones be bygones and bigots be bigots.

  6. striker on January 30th, 2007 3:55 pm

anurag, questions be damned. producers questioned you as you were pitching ‘no smoking’. even actors, including SRK, questioned you as to why you were making such a film. the censor board questioned you when you tried to release ‘black friday’ and the media.. well, their whole job is to question. let them keep questioning. all you need to know is that you’ve set out to make a film that’s close to your heart, one that you believe in. the real question here is, does anything else matter? 2007 is your year anurag, make note of that.

  7. OM on January 30th, 2007 4:49 pm

There is not much worse that can happen to Black Friday than what has happened…People have tried to bring the movie down..but the audience has lapped the movie…in a nutshell you have seen both the sides of reactions…It can only get good from here….infact release of Black Friday will be a tight slap on the face of journos like Amreesh or Ambareesh Srivastav….

    Good Luck Anurag

  8. striker on January 30th, 2007 5:01 pm

well said OM. allow me to throw in a quote from “batman begins” here. both alfred and thomas wayne (bruce’s father) say to bruce at different points in his life…

alfred/thomas wayne: “bruce, why do we fall?”
    bruce: [blank stare]
alfred/thomas wayne: “so we can learn to pick ourselves up”

  9. Saurabh on January 30th, 2007 5:35 pm

    Hey Anurag!!!

Good luck with Black Friday. I just happen to remember these lines from a Floyd’s song:

    (Lost for words)
    “…
So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go fuck myself
You know you just cant win”

I hope we win this time.

  10. wb on January 30th, 2007 8:34 pm

guru, you rock!! having not seen/met you in person, it’s impossible for me to imagine (visualize) someone with so much passion, so much fire, and a humility so deep that enables one to open up and discuss about the inner devils in public with *public* in black and white

  11. wb on January 30th, 2007 8:52 pm

Anurag, please ignore the grammatics in my response above… i am still lost.

  12. Shashikant on January 30th, 2007 9:03 pm

    Anurag,

Heck with all those bad elements.

I was there when Black Friday was screened to an overflowing auditorium at Pune Film Festival (Jan 2005). The entire movie was shown without interval and nobody moved. You should have been there to see the standing ovation with thundering applause at the end of the film. It would have buried all the doubts you have about your own movie.

  13. Muzzy on January 31st, 2007 2:09 am

    Good luck with the movie.

  14. Ignorant on January 31st, 2007 6:26 am

Hi Anurag sir!!! Wish you all the best for the release. I really feel this is the apt time for release…and the film will do better than it wud have done if released 2 years before.

  15. Ranjit on January 31st, 2007 7:39 am

    Anurag,
I honestly don’t know whether you have made a film that will be commercially successful. But I do know that you have made a fine, fine film. I hav seen ‘Black Friday’ (during the ‘banned years’, a poor, pirated print, and I do so hope to see it at a cinema in the US) with my friends, and it caused long, heated debates between us as to whether there was a right or wrong at all in this whole sorry story. Irrespective of the fate of this film at the BO, it is bound to win acclaim, and is defenitely one I wish to add to my collection of DVDs. With the kind of talent you have, man, never be disheartened !!!

Am eagerly waiting for your ‘No Smoking’ too - especially to see what you have made John and Ayesha do.

  16. sumit on January 31st, 2007 9:38 am

    @AK
your acceptng ur doubts over ur political maturity at that point of time is of gr8 help…
    U r brutally honest!!
Black Friday, Hazaraon Khwaishein aisi, they perturb me bcoz when i see them, i feel I need to know a lot before i go around doing things…
At least now i wont be so disturbed about my political immaturity..i hope time will do its job..
All the best for 9th feb

  17. nononsense on February 1st, 2007 6:52 am

I saw the film and thought it was made to impress. It didnt have anything to say. Its a film without a message.

  18. RK on February 1st, 2007 6:58 am

nononsense: its based on true events of Bombay bomb blasts of 1993. was there any message in the events?

  19. nononsense on February 1st, 2007 7:14 am

rk, When you make a film around the bomb blasts, or anything else you have to know why youre making it. What are you telling the audience? What is your stand? What is your message, purpose in making this film? If all youre telling the audience is that ‘this is how its happened,’ then youre making a documentary. But this is not a documentary, so in that sense youre misleading the audience into believing its what happened. Im not saying this is a terrible film. Its better than many. I just dont think its great.

  20. Anurag Kashyap on February 1st, 2007 7:33 am

hey buddhist i see you came on again..yeah the film doesn’t say anything it just shows you the mirror..then its upto you whether you see anything in it or not..if you are looking for someone to spell out the message then my friend i am not an able enough filmmaker..i don’t know why you have to change your identity to come on site because i smell something suspicious..anyway welcome back and check your mail..thanks

  21. nononsense on February 1st, 2007 7:51 am

Interesting how you love to criticize half the industry but can’t take any criticism of yourself…

  22. Sangeeta on February 1st, 2007 7:54 am

constructive criticism is always a good thing, but putting someones work or themselves down without full knowledge is bound to irk you no?

  23. nononsense on February 1st, 2007 7:59 am

Oh brilliant. How many aliases do you have… ok won’t criticize any more will go away since it bothers you so much…take it easy

  24. RK on February 1st, 2007 8:03 am

nononsense: we can discuss the film once its released on 9th February. BTW Black Friday is left behind too far in the time scale to affect Anurag Kashyap as a director. He will not be judged by Black Friday now but by his new films.

  25. striker on February 1st, 2007 8:07 am

nononsense, i have neither seen the film nor do i know anurag, so don’t worry.. i’m not speaking on his behalf by any means.. but as a film buff i do read plenty of reviews and criticisms about movies.. and i fail to see how this…

“I saw the film and thought it was made to impress. It didnt have anything to say. Its a film without a message.”

…even qualifies as a criticism. if u offer a criticism, back it up with something more relevant than “it didn’t have anything to say”. explain what you saw in the film that makes you say this. or maybe i’m missing an earlier criticism you may have offered..?

  26. saahil on February 1st, 2007 8:49 am

    hi anurag,
just wanted to ask whether it’s true about you initially rejecting actor vijay maurya to play the role of ‘D’ in ‘black friday’? heard that later he turned up for the audition with dawood’s ‘get up’ and not recognize him you eventually selected vijay maurya after being 100%convinced that this actor works perfectly for dawood’s role! if it’s true then vijay must have really pulled off a great act!
by the way i’ve seen black friday(guilty of watching the pirated copy..just couldn’t stop myself..desperation got the better of morality!)and must compliment you for making such a realistic film..it takes courage to attempt such a story, which actually is a true incident..superb effort by everyone involved in it’s making..loved the performance of kay kay menon, aditya srivastav, pawan malhotra and kishore kadam..COMMENDABLE JOB!
had watched it almost two years back, yet i’m looking forward to it’s release on feb 9th..
anurag, my best wishes to you and your team!!

  27. Anurag Kashyap on February 1st, 2007 9:02 am

Mr. nononsense, ihave no problem with criticism..my problem is why do you have to keep changing your identity to attack me..is why i will not take your criticism, because i think you have a motive..last time you questioned my integrity and that was fine ..if only you said what you had to say under the same name as buddhist..we get your I.P. address sir..isn’t it strange that every time someone is criticising without really having to say anything has the same I.P. address which is triband-mum-59.183.32.138.mtnl.net.in..thanks

  28. saahil on February 1st, 2007 9:21 am

    hey anurag,
waiting for your reply about the truth behind vijay maurya’s casting as dawood..

  29. oz on February 1st, 2007 9:58 am

= Anurag, sorry for the delayed response to catching trollers on PFC… have been away…

= PFC Editors… please be more active

Nononsense has been awarded the troll cap.

I’ll be withholding his exact location details as of now.

  30. abhijeet on February 1st, 2007 11:41 am

black friday remains special for taking names directly, for not making all the characters speak extremely intelligent dialogues, for leaving questions unanswered instead of offering dramatic njoyment.
    and for indian ocean’s feat.

  31. steve on February 1st, 2007 12:30 pm

Anurag, sadly ur film won’t get a cinematic release here.

I have been informed it’ll be a straight to dvd release.

That’s so crap, but Its a business thing I guess.

I’m sure alot of people would’ve seen it though..

    Oh well…:(

  32. Yash on February 1st, 2007 5:01 pm

    Guys,

Like in Animal Farm, in the end it is hard to differentiate who is who. You all ( regulars of PFC ) became them ( you know whom ). Please don’t be evil.

  33. Anurag Kashyap on February 1st, 2007 8:20 pm

hey saahil, yes vijay is a friend of mine and i did reject him..and he came back after a month as D…but i didn’t see him..they showed me an audition that my AD’s did quietly with him..and i couldn’t recognise him..but they shot him using only his profile..thats how we shot with him in the film..he was “D in profile”

  34. Sumit on February 1st, 2007 10:20 pm

    @AK
Can you please write about the “whats” and “hows” of the research you did for black friday??
It will be of great value to all of us. I wish to know the whole process through which you went to find the truth.
    Can you please do it??

  35. saahil on February 3rd, 2007 1:09 pm

    anurag,
    thanks for the reply..

  36. Dpac on February 3rd, 2007 3:25 pm

    Hi Anurag,

I had asked this question before but somehow the comment was never published or ‘got lost’.

Is black friday going to have a Australian release?
I would like to catch it on screen.

  37. Anurag Kashyap on February 3rd, 2007 8:37 pm

it will have an australian release..though not on the same day..will keep you posted..right now its releasing only US and india..

  38. Bhavesh Purohit on February 3rd, 2007 9:59 pm

i have seen the film on a cd no. of times and have made my friends watch it..and now m making them watch again on theatres on 9th feb..i loved the film…thanx for giving us a gr8 film like Black Friday

  39. Bhavesh Purohit on February 3rd, 2007 10:20 pm

anurag, things have happend with me too.. me and a friend wrote a play for my college cuz v were told to..i have passion for writing so i made my friend to work with me and we wrote whole play in 3 nights… it was a comedy play..i did script hearing with many people and they all loved it… when i went to the college people they just rejected it sayin m a newcomer so they wont take a risk hiring me as a director and scriptwriter..instead they hired a regular director from some coll… i was angry but what cud i have done… but then i said to myself “welcome to the industry”… now i have planned to make a short movie which i wrote and i have taken a break in my engineering to gather funds for my film.. m working in a call center for it cuz its easy to make money there… i have learned that its only me who can help myself to survive,to be succesful,to achieve wat i want..my parents dont trust me on that so they refused to fund me… hope it get made one day…
Thanx PFC for a platform where i can share my experiences..oz i have written mails to u but no reply…neways ill try again.. meanwhile m in the process for gathering funds and crew for my film…

  40. Dpac on February 4th, 2007 12:37 am

    @ Anurag
    thats good news…
i will be on the lookout for the release date
i saw BF around 2 years back. After searching for a dvd everywhere, i found a copy streamed online!!!!

The site desichai.com still streams the movie i think.

Is this a pirated copy or is it another way of ‘release’ with BF being banned and all?

  41. Pratty on February 6th, 2007 12:50 am

yeah…I have read this fellow..ambrish..I guess…he used to do review for Outlook i guess and trashed each and every hindi movie… never read any positive review from him…I guess he too directed one movie which bombed at box office.

  42. Marty on February 7th, 2007 7:27 am

sensitive subjects as ‘Black Friday’ are not easy to carry out. while doing such projects u always think - are u doin the ‘right’ thing or not? m sure anurag u must have a great job.
    Hats Off!!
