Blue – Music Review

Blue “Blue” is the first soundtrack from the Double Academy Award winner Rahman Sir after his famous win and his second for this year after “Delhi 6″ which got both public and critics appreciation . Though his genius needs no approval but Delhi 6 just show-cased it once more to the whole world why Rahman deserves the Academy more than anyone else . For Fans like me expectations are always high from his every album but after such a win the spotlight on him has just got much more brighter . Now Rahman itself is an international name but with names like Kylie Minogue associated with the album , it would certainly have a much more international focus and speculation too which would be a new experience for him too .

Coming to the first track on the album “Chiggy Wiggy” by Kylie Minogue . Though the track is not bad but its neither brilliant and what disappointed me was that Rahman Sir took a very safe approach and didn’t try to experiment which is not a typical feature of him . Pressure?? Can’t Say but certainly not his best . Kylie sings it effortlessly in her style and there’s something about her voice that always manages to please me . The song also features Sonu Nigam towards the end who sings the Punjabi part with Urdu lyrics , sounds strange , but that’s the case . Nothing much for Sonu in the song but I guess it had to be done by one of the best Singers from the country considering it was Kylie . Sonu would be more than happy . Lets be frank , he would not have even be approached for such a small part if it wasn’t for singing along with her . But one thing I loved was the way Sonu pronounced “Chiggy Wiggy” in the song in true Indian style and has not given it a western feel even though he could have easily . Lyricist Abbas Tyrewala hasn’t done a great job either and has just managed to get a decent song . Listen how cleverly he plugs in the word “Khiladi” in the song for obvious reasons . In all , as I said, its not a bad track and would work to an extent for sure . Though I expect much more from each one of them .

Then comes “Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai” which is a nice fast paced song with a bit of Jazz feel in it to add that sensual feel to it . The video of the song is already on air and Lara is looking hot (and also beautiful) but a bit odd with Sanjay Dutt . Though the music here is interesting but the lyrics didn’t quite work for me . Shreya Ghoshal has done a good job singing it and she is good at singing songs with a bit of sensual feel in it . It has worked for her in the past but in those songs the lyrics were also good . Here the lyrics are not that good to match up to her singing . Mayur Puri who last worked on “Love Mera Hit Hit” and got popular with “Singh is Kinng” has done a so-so job and I guess writing sensual lyrics is not that easy and that too if you have to write it for a girl . Sukhwinder Singh is also there and he as usual has done a good job . Overall , its a disappointment according to Rahman standards and might just work in the film only .

“Fiqrana” comes next which again is a very basic track and didn’t quite impress me . The vocals are by Vijay Prakash who sings it in Rahman style of singing and supporting him is Shreya Ghoshal . The lyrics by Abbas are not good here too . They have nothing to offer as such and they just go along with the music with nothing standing out . The whole song actually goes about in a very average way with nothing standing out in it .

Then comes “Bhula Tujhe” by Rashid Ali who became famous with “Kahin To Hogi Wo” of Jaane Tu.. That track became popular at a much later stage after the film got released and lets hope the same happens with this track . A slow symphonic track and Rahman sir has done a good job here . This track is a bit better than the previous tracks but still falls a bit short . Rashid has done a good job and even Abbas has done a decent job with lyrics .

The theme track of the film comes next which I think would feature Katrina Kaif in it . It is more of a song though and cannot be called a Theme Song and has some bits of lyrics in it by Raqeeb Alam . It is more on a slower side and a much faster version of the track was featured in the theatrical trailer . This one is also not that bad and would look good in the film . There are many singers on this one and they have done a good job together . Don’t pay any attention to the lyrics here .

The sixth track on the album is Rehnuma which again has a bit of Jazz , Club kinda feel and seems to be a lot inspired from the James Bond soundtracks . With rumours of Danny Boyle making the next bond film doing the rounds , I guess Rahman sir has started warming up for it . It seriously sounds like a track from an espionage thriller and that too a Bond only . Nice song though , I liked it , has a signature Rahman style music in some places . A lot depends on how it is used . Sonu and Shreya have done a good job as usual, especially Shreya .

The Last track on the album “Yaar Mila” by Udit Narayan and Madhusree gives a disappointing end to the album . The lyrics have been weak throughout the album and here they are no different . The music is also pretty average and nothing good about it .

Overall , it is a pretty average soundtrack and a lot more is expected from an A.R. Rahman album . Director , Anthony D’souza , lost a great opportunity and couldn’t quite get what other Directors manage to get from Rahman sir . Usually when I dont like a Rahman album and i write about it , most people comment and say that Rahman’s music grows with time . I just hope that happens this time and I start liking the songs after some time . I wasn’t impressed with Jaane Tu.. also in the beginning but afterwards it caught on me too , especially after the film . The lyrics are the weakest part of this soundtrack in my opinion and it falls well short of expectations .

Album Rating : Three out of Five ; a bit disappointing .

it has to be a hit of the year ..its got words like “Soniye” , “Jaaniye” , “Heeriye” which I guess every punjabi hip-hop has … Though i didn’t like the way Sonu pronounced Urdu word “Khaatoon” …he made it sound like Cartoon :) …But as I said , its not a bad track and would get popular for sure ..

very honest review Saurabh. take my kudos.
Only this morning I got a hold of all the tracks and believe me I had to check the sleeve again and again that it’s a Rahman album.

Chiggy Wiggy is an average hip-hop/bhangra mix…

Fiqrana sounded so much half baked…..

I wished ‘blue theme’ to be something like Rangeela theme or like the opening credit of RDB

except Aaj Dil Mustaq hain… not any one of them sound like Rahman.

I am sorry to say..and this may be debated…but I would like to stick to that Thiruda Thiruda-Roja-Bombay-Duet era.

Tha time even in a very commercial venture like Kadalan, Rahman tried to bring something new…

Ratnakar, I kinda disagree with you here… I thought Jaane tu Jaane na, Jodha Akbar, Ada, Yuvaraj, Gajini and then Dilli 6.. each one sounded distinctly different and I loved each one of them… point in case generally directors pick and decide which songs they want, in tis case subhash ghai definately did not pick the best of the lot… though what muses is that having 5-6 releases with all brilliant songs even without his usual experiments in itself holds pretty well for ARR … but then like always, each one has his own take.. we cant hear and like things the same way :)

by the way … Jai Ho… the song can almost be heard in a tamil flick called ATM… i know people who ve heard the song previously are never able make out, but hear “ellam uruavum oruvan oruvan ke” …(sethu sir lemme know if lyrics are right…) … and then again the music was tried in guru… and finally the same was composed for SM… 2 non successful songs finally made as third runs in gyms and clubs and pubs in US ;)

Some times I feel that those who grew up (myself included) with the rise of A R Rahman subconsciously develop this nostalgic and ‘it was good in our times’ mentality. When I listened to Ghajini soundtrack the first time, I put it back in the racks. But you see all the college-going people around you enjoying those songs so much (or even people like my fiancee who have not been as die hard fan of any particular musician as I have; she enjoys it with a sense of detachment with the artists). It is at times like this that you know you are aging. :banginghead:

Blue is better than Yuvraaj(very very mediocre),Ghajini(some what better),Guru(not upto standard of Mani films)..Then again not all songs are up to mark like chiggy Wiggy(what a horrible song),Blue theme(ARR seems to be run out of ideas, seems desperate to create a hit tune and fails miserably),Yaar Mila(really really weak song).Fortunately other songs are not as bad..

Bhoole Tuje-Typical ARR song didn’t like much but has the potential to grow on you

Aaj Dil- really nice chorus(ohhhhhhh…) with piano at the end…good song

            Rehnuma-just about Ok..

Fiqrana-the part where singer sings ‘Yeh Fiqrana’ is nice. rest is just passable…

Overall as always an overhyped ARR album, but not as bad as Ghajini,Yuvraaj or Guru but on paar with Dilli6

            Aaj Dil,Rehnuma,Fiqrana being noteworhy..

I agree with both of you .. The Rahman I know never worked on more than one album a year and now he churns out a lot many …just like every other music Director in the business … He is a free soul and I miss the freedom that was there in his music .. But then he also has composed “Delhi 6″ this year which I think was brilliant … I just want that Rahman Sir take his time for every film soundtrack and give his best ..

@tushar: i dont see the connection between “torrent/popularity/commercial success” and “being sold out”. if u are referring to his albums being a “sell out” and hence he is “sold out”, then i am ok. but u are meaning that his commercial success has hindered his musical prowess and he has turned mediocre and churned out songs for the sake of it, then i totally disagree.

The Blue Theme is also really cool and so is Yaar Milaa Tha–Madhushree and Udit sound great and the lyrics are nice and playful. The rest of the tracks take time to get into though…

Wow..I must be the only one who liked Rehnuma or Yaar Mila. :-P

Chiggy Wiggy..umm…let’s see. Rahman has brought out every traditional, albeit lesser known in Hindi film milieu, sound and got a masterful song. Be it Malayalam singing in Jiya Jale, or Gujarat doha in Barso Re. For whatever reason it might be, why go for overly cliched bhangra in Chiggy Wiggy? Why Rahman sir, why!!!

Other songs are pretty much made for club crowd. Whatever you guys feel and say, expect DJs to spin Yaar Mila in the sessions just for its beats if nothing else.

I sort of liked the album. The one where you can just not pay attention to lyrics and enjoy the music. Lyrics is overrated. :-D

I completely dont agree with you. I think Blue is the next RDB. I remember how all the reviews were against RDB music, and then after some pt of time, ppl started lavishing. Its the same case here. You’ll eat you words then. If ur a Rahman fan, u should understand the basic theme of the movie for which he is giving music too. I like rahman experimenting too, but is that what the director wants. At the end of the day, its his call. Given the fact he is giving music to a commercial and thriller movie, he has made justice by giving tracks like Rehnuma,Aaj Dil & Fiqrana. Coming to fiqrana, i agree its a basic tune, but the layering is different and experimented. No other composer in India or in the world would give different layers in a track. And i heard someone say Guru was not his best work at all. I thought except for Baazi Laga, it was a fantabulous album, top-notch.

I m a die-hard rahmaniac, a bit of sugggestion. I keep listening to his tracks repeatedly, even though they sound Rahmanish the first few times, bcoz i tend to find a lote of different sounds in them, a lot of layers croos-binding them in one song. I first thought Rehnuma was not so special, but i am liking it nw. Esp ‘qaatil adaaaaaaaa…..’ in the starting.

this is no negative comment. pls don be angry.

Yaar Milaa Thaa lyrics were “just about fine”? Kyaa? Kyaa?! Ek minute, yeh lo lyrics, read ‘em carefully, then phir se comment karo :-)

Yaar milaa thaa saiyaan, ek din, yaar milaa thaa saiyaan.
        Aankhon mein sapne,
Dil mein leke pyaar milaa thaa saiyaan.

        Kyaa main karti saiyaan baiyaan?
        Kyaa main karti saiyaan?
Teri yaad mein kitni sadiyaan aah bharti saiyaan?

Arre kuch toh sharam kar leti–ab kyaa kahegi duniyaa?
Kyun uske sang li us peepal ki chaaiyaan?!

Sochaa nikal loon par pallu woh khencha zor se,
Bola sandesaa hai laayaa woh TERI aur se.

        Haaye dil ghaayal, zakhmi jiyaa!
        Kaise jeeye ab teraa piyaa?

Maar diya dulhaniyaa tu ne maar diyaa dulhaniyaa.
Jeete jee apne saiyaan ko maar diyaa dulhaniyaa.

Hai kusoor kya meraa, batana yun sataa,
        Main teri raah takti thi..

Raah takti thi toh khafaa ho gayi thi tu yaa bewafaa?
Ke panghat pe ghoonghat ke binaa jaa baithi kaise tu woh bhi mere bina?!
Usi panghat pe jahaan jhat se pehli baar thaami thi maine tri kalayi, harjayi!
Jahan dhoop se hum bache the, jahan nache the apne kadam, aur besharam woh kalayi tu thamaa ke aayi haathon mein naa jaane kis khotte ke, kis potte ke,
mere hote se par sote se!

Par tu ne hi toh usse bhejaa naa?
Ke meraa pyaar piyaa ko de jaanaa.

Yaar bulaayaa saiyaan, maine yaar bulaayaa saiyaan
Bhooli saari duniyaa jab ek baar bulaayaa saiyaan

Toh aa gale dulhaniyaa lag jaa! A gale dulhaniyaa
Dhekh ke apni yaari duniyaa laakh jale dulhaniyaa

Arre teri waffa ke kisse ab gaa rahi hai duniyaa
Har maa kahe bete se laa aise dulhaniyaa

    guys,
i dont understand what many of you are expecting from ARR…see,we all must understand that blue is a commercial flick targeted A-B-C upto z classes..jtyjn is a love flick..he composed romantic tranks..guru is kinda documentary(to me)..so some classic..ghajini ..again a commercial flick..commercial music..yuvraaj,i would say, close your eyes and get a high quality headphone..listen to the orchestration and classic n romantic tracks…delhi-6..truly a masterpiece..so ARR definitly knows what he do..actually guys ,you all must know, its a directors call..ARR would compose tracks and shower it to the director..he has to choose the tracks..so dont blame ARR..what do you mean by an average track?(no offense) do some of we atleast know how to categorize any songs in any category…we know only to blame and pinpoint..give this blue some time..dont just “HEAR”.”LISTEN”…i know all these tracks are racy and fast numbers..but see how many genre’s of music,he is trying to give..so dont try to be a “frog in a well”..explore the music..listen to each track..the background music..leave the lyrics..etc etc..just the music and singing..ARR is known to give music which everyone loves..even though some people blame ARR or trash his music…no use at all.because the truth is they all love the tracks in a certain period of time..this is not like praising ARR or giving hype..but seeing some of the comments here,i seriously wonder, some of the guys speak like they know music very well and they can compose a symphony…ridiculous..people who are tied down to old tracks,i would like to say, they are not old tracks..they are melodies..so dont expect a musician like ARR to race in a circled cage..he is still exploring music..let him..eventhough he had given some music tracks which doesnt fit for the time..and became a average, the movie is also responsible for spoiling the songs…so stop commenting like
    ” i expected more”
“i had higher thoughts about blue music”
    “certainly not his best”
    “is it a ARR album”
“i even pinched myslf to check”
    etc etc…..
please stop comparing his old tracks with his new one..because you will always find a conflict..time changes..way of composing changes..ARR is exploring the depths of music…so lets enjoy music..AS a ARR fan and a music fan…i would say dont judge any album in the first hearings…if you dont have time to hear many times..dont post some useless comments..dnt reply back..coz am not gonna come and check.bye guys….plz..no offense guys….

I actually loved Rehnuma and Yaar Mila Tha.

And before giving any verdict to the quality of this album, we have to recognize the fact that ARR had to create this music under the constraints of the action-adventure-thriller movie — *presumably* spectacular to look at and well-choreographed, but am not expecting much of a story-line and characterization. (Heh! Shallow characters going deep in the ocean!) The premise of the movie does matter – Dil Se wouldn’t be Dil Se without its philosophical backdrop, deep and powerful love story. And considering that, I think ARR has tried to push the envelop and give soul to this otherwise soul-less movie.

Sonu has also done a fab job with rehnuma ..

I want to say somethin apart from this album’s context ….. if any album doesn’t work then it is the responsibilty of many people apart from the composer … in my opinion its all about right team falling in right place .. and no single person is responsible .. many things matter eually like the script, director’s narration and vision , etc. etc. apart from the composer and lyricist who do the job of execution ..

Am i the only one here thinking that the lyrics are very good..
they just rhyme not putting your brain to work to try to understand the undertones…deeper meanings..metaphors etc…they just go with the flow..for a 150 crore film, the music and the lyrics are very good imo.. :)

With due respect to Rehman..i think ”BLUE”..is quite qverage..moreover most songs dnt match the picturization..I somehow feel Rehman’s music are not favourbale for action movies..remember ”LAKEER”..good music from Rehman..but picturized on Sunny Deol..Suniel Sheety..& Sohail Khan..so it was absurd to see Sunny Deol dancing to Rehman tunes..now same here for Sunjay Dutt..looking overweight, as someone known to me first thought it was an advertisement for detergent…(the person is not a regular follower of hindi movies)..and the lyrics sounds like..”KAPADON MAIN DAAG HAI..PAANI MAIN JHAAG HAI”..and u see ”BLUE”. Chiggy wiggy sounds more ANU MALIK type..

I also recall one more action movie having good songs from Rehman..but look absurd when u see Sharad Kapur in it..(dnt remember the movie name–starring Jackie Shroff,Sharad Kapoor & Ayesha Jhulka.)

The opinions are personal observations..without any insult to anyone..i think itz the lyrics and genre of movie tht is wrng.

I read these type of reviews & comments & craps everytime. Don’t know, why I go to find out the maestros’ music reviews. May be just to find out if I am the same in LISTENING the music. But I always get disappointed. :(((( People just hear it as usual. Sorry friends, don’t want to insult anyone. We have so much history teaching that Rahman grows after time but still people step in to blatter around.
Grow up friends!!! Don’t be the 1st one to review or take that honor by writing or commenting like this just to please your girlfriend. Let us see if all you can write the same review after 2 months from here about this very album. The music will be superhit by the time. I have seen people saying Ghajini is mediocre & the same people listening kaise muze tum mil gayee, behka & guzarish for ‘n’ no of times. Rahman is not a music director, to whom you can hear once & comment on beats, fusions, singing, melodies etc.

From bottom of my heart to everyone criticizing ARR, who do this just to shine in the group or please their girlfriend –

Please grow up, Please grow up !!!!

Sukhwinder and shreya they sound so different in “Aaj dil gustakh hai”, its an amazing track. Love “Fiqrana” and “Rehnuma” as well…

Yes i agree, chiggy wiggy sounds like Anu Malik composition. But Anu Malik isnt that bad as has been made out to be (”Phir teri kahani yaad aayi”(huge shelf life), “Sir”,….. and many more)

If there is one and only one thing that Blue gets remembered hundred years later, it will be Shreya Ghoshal. How that young, bubbly child grows into a woman with this album, is remarkable. It almost reminded me of Rahman’s earlier days when Asha Bhonsle absolutely ‘reinvented’ her own self with Rangeela.

Ok. I listened to it and unlike his other albums I dont think I will like it eventully. All the songs are so cliched and ordinary. What is happening here ? Only one song had the potential “Blue theme” which was ruined by the consistent “Blue” word uttered by chorus. The song could have been a 10 minute long anthem but it is short with so many things crammed which could have been elongated. :(

    Aaj Dil,Rehnuma,Fiqrana being noteworhy..Rest sucks..
