Bobby :: Before Saawariya presents youngest RK of RK banner !
Bobby (1973) came as a rage and won the audience all over the country. To watch Bobby is to watch fresh young energy on screen. Its so amazing thing that even in 2007 when 34 years have passed since its release, film brings same impact on viewer.
Bobby is not simply just another Hindi Film. To know Bobby’s magic is to see it personally.
Its very (and very very) important hindi film in various manners. It was a blockbuster and most successful film of 1973 besides Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanzeer, is just another factor.
It was a pioneer film in the sense that first time in hindi cinema, a film was made where love of teen agers was depicted. Love stories have been made in Hindi cinema since beginning but main characters there were always strugglers and quite mature in looks and in thoughts also. On the screen they played characters often bigger than their actual age. Before Bobby, at least female actors used to play mature young ladies no matter if their actual age was less than 16 years. Many actresses were launched at the age of 14-16 but they never could play that age group on screen.
Bobby gave chance to Dimple Kapadia to play her real age on screen. Bobby brought real teen agers on the screen.
Bobby is not Raj Kapoor’s best work but still its heaviest among all the young love stories ever made in Hindi cinema. Bobby was highly successful but Raj Kapoor did not repeat this success as some formula. For him it was just another territory to touch and he showed his acumen here also.
————————————-
Influence of Bobby on other films :
Like many of Raj Kapoor’s earlier films Bobby also started a new trend and it heavily affected the Hindi cinema. Almost every love story made after the Bobby to launch star sons took major or minor inspirations from Bobby. Bobby is present in all the later love stories. And why young love stories only, Prakash Mehra’s Sharabi’s Vicky is nothing but blend of Raja of Bobby and Devdas. Rather Bobby is completely contained in Sharabi especially in first half. Here Mrs Braganza is replaced with Munshi Ji.
Rahul Raweil’s Love Story which launched Kumar Gaurav is also inspired by Bobby to a great extent. Suraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kya had got many scenes copied from Bobby.
Bobby plays mother of all these Love Stories and their existence has been heavily dependent on Bobby.
Why only content and way of presentation even later love stories immitated song picturisation and situation of the song ,
” Pyar bhara dil kabhi na toro isme dilber rehata ” (sung by Narendra Chanchal). This song
paved way for such songs in many films. e.g. Reshma’s song in Hero’s ” Lambi Judai”.
Raja Hindustani’s song and many other films.
Though it has been proved as a bad thing because Bobby’s bumper success and powerful presentation influenced immitations by other filmmakers and it somehow stopped growth of love stories in hindi cinema. Bobby became benchmark and everybody has been trying to touch that standard.
———————————-
Raj Kapoor and Bobby :: Raju and Raja :
Bobby has to be considered whenever history of Raj Kapoor and his contribution to hindi cinema is considered, it has to be considered to analyse and discuss the factors behind Raj Kapoor’s departure from his kind of cinema. Its mentioned that after Box Office failure of Mera Naam Joker, Raj Kapoor faced the most dark phase of his life, his creative life. He became reclusive and started spending time alone.
He had used all his creative energy in making his biggest film Mera Naam Joker.
He did not seem to do much between 1970 and 1973 except acting in 1-2 films and helping Randhir Kapoor in making Kal Aaj Aur Kal. It was time to launch Rishi Kapoor, his middle son.
Raj Kapoor directed 10 films and his biggest project Mera Naam Joker was his 5th film and it can be termed as Intermission of show of greatest showman of Hindi cinema.
When he started his show again after intermission then he took the back seat of a director only and never appeared before the camera as an actor in his own films. His Raju was died in Mera Naam Joker (MNJ) and he never tried to revive that Raju again. Rather he started his show after intermission with the younger Raja and his life.
Raj Kapoor did not try to infect Raja with his own character Raju but developed him independently. He made him sensitive, civilized, and first time his lead actor rebelled for personal love.
Raja was not following Raju’s traits anymore. Unlike Raju, Raja had got worldly luxuries in abundance since childhood but in the eyes of his father he was becoming a spoilt brat so he was sent to boarding school (Prince Salim’s childhood and Akbar’s decision to send him away from home’s shelter and luxuries – Mughal-i-Azam). Raja’s stomach was filled with delicious food, he was provided best of the clothes and best of education rather he had no struggle to survive and hence his problems were meant to be different.
Bobby depicts problems of single male child who is given every facility but who is not given parental love and care which he requires most. He is loner in that sense and carves for love which he gets from his nanny Mrs Braganza and Bobby. What you don’t get at home, you will seek it outside.
Bobby was not only departure for Raj Kapoor as a director but it was a departure for writer KA Abbas also who had never written such a film before which had no socially relevent idealism attached with the main plot.
Bobby’s lead characters had not spent their childhood in utter poverty. They belonged to either ultra rich class or hard working but well to do middle class.
MNJ was a major commercial failure and it had affected Raj Kapoor’s reputation in the market and its mentioned that first time after success of Barsaat, Raj Kapoor had to contact distributors on his own so that they pick up RK’s new film else it was always other way round and distributors used to make round around him and RK studio to get his films.
Financial debacle of MNJ affected Raj Kapoor but not the spirit of a filmmaker and once Raj Kapoor started making Bobby then he did not show any compromise in the quality. If he needed Narendra Chanchal for a song then he paid hefty amount of Rs 25,000=00 for a single song he sang in the film. That’s the passion to make a film. Everybody wants that his films should work good at box office but then passion, during the making of the film, should be invested properly.
Bobby was not Raj Kapoor kind of cinema but once he decided to make it he did it with full passion and that’s why it can be safely said that though later many films were made after getting inspiration from Bobby but Bobby still remains as the most fresh and young Hindi film.
Bobby has got continuity and has got powerful and impressive scenes. Raj Kapoor liberally used a scene inspired by similar scene from Love Story (Arthur Hiller’s 1970 Hollywood movie) but he made it completely synonymous with the flow of story of his film Bobby.
This is possible with a great filmmaker like Raj Kapoor only that though he was launching his son Rishi Kapoor as hero but he kept the title of the film on the basis of his female lead. Raj Kapoor’s films always had lead actress in important roles but till he played lead character Raju in his films he never kept title of any of his film on the basis of name of lead female character. Bobby became first and last film where he kept title on the name of lead female character. It certainly paved way for Julie, another blockbuster love stories of 1970s.
————————————————
Music :
Music of Bobby is just amazing and still it carries youthfulness whenever we listen, Mein Shyar to nahin, mujhe kuch kehna hai or who can stop enjoying the chrous, Na mangon sona chandi, na chaun here moti…., duet hum tum ek kamre mein band ho..
Shailendra Singh’s voice became a voice for young Rishi Kapoor till Kishor Kumar took over the charge of songs picturised on Rishi Kapoor also.
and Lata’s Ai Phansa and ankhiyon ko rehne do and Jhooth bole kavva kate..
Raj Kapoor had never used any other music composer than Shankar Jaikishan in his films but Lata Mangeshkar had denied to sing in Mera Naam Joker and Raj Kapoor was eager to use again Lata Mangeshkar’s voice in his films and hence he selected most popular music composer duo of those years Laxmikant Pyarelal as due had a rapport with Lata Mangeshkar and she used to sing in every film of theirs.
——————————–
Dimple factor :
Bobby was successful in establishing both the actors, Rishi and Dimple, independently. Its another fact that Dimple had left films because of her marriage. Rishi Kapoor had prior experience of acting because he had played young Raj Kapoor in MNJ. But Dimple had neither such prior acting experience nor she was connected with family of film stars as Rishi Kapoor was and yet she performed very confidently and she was Bobby for people and not Dimple Kapadia, the first time actress.
Love stories have been using new actresses like Vijeyeta Pandit (Love Story), Sarika (Geet Gata Chal)Tina Munim (Rocky), Amrita Singh (Betaab), Rati Agnihotri (Ek Duje ke liye), Juhi Chawla ( QSQT) Bhagya Shri (Maine Pyar Kiya), Tabu (Prem), even Dimple’s own daughter Twinkle Khanna ( Barsaat) but no actress could match Dimple phenomenon which she showed in Bobby. Call it Raj Kapoor’s directorial vision or anythingelse but Dimple’s debut in Bobby’s remains most impressive female debut in a love story ever made in Hindi cinema.
Bobby earned so much name for Dimple Kapadia even before the proper release of the film in the theatres that than reigning super star Rajesh Khanna, who had earned huge reputation of a romantic hero, married her even before the film was released.
———————–
Characterization :
This is amazing that though Raj Kapoor was launching his son but he did not compromise with the story and hence gave enough space to other characters as well so that overall film should look like a good film. His son was only a part though important part of the narration, and no extra scenes were inserted in to the story to emphasise his acting abilities. Film flows smoothly and each character works in tandem with flow of the story and each actor just makes his/her character memorable.
Actors were completely dissolved in to the characters. Not only Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia who just spread loving freshness on screen but PremNath, Pran, Durga Khote, Aruna Irani, Farida Zalal, Sonia Sahni all leave long lasting impact.
And Prem Chopra ! He just chewed and delivered the dialogue, “Prem Naam hai mera, Prem Chopra” in such a way that it became uniquely his line.
———————————————
Editing :
Brilliant editing is obvious through the scenes where Bobby (Dimple) goes to attend dinner at Raja’s (Rishi) house along with her father Mr Jack Braganza (Prem Nath) and granny Mrs Braganza (Durga Khote).
Raja’s father Mr Nath (Pran) asks Raja to show Bobby his room because he wants to talk with Jack in absence of Raja and Bobby.
Bobby goes to Raja’s room and there they become happy by thinking that their parents are planning to unite them, to approve their love affair but downstairs excatly opposite is happening and Mr Nath is insulting Jack.
And this long scene is presented in such a way that audience see sequence of Raja and Bobby’s loving talks followed by Nath and Jack’s hateful talks and again camera goes to show Raja and Dimple enjoying each others company and next we see quarrel of Nath and Jack and this order of scenes continue till Jack shouts to call Bobby downstairs.
This complex scene which is constructed by combining multiple small scenes suggests super editing abilities of Raj Kapoor. And whole film comes before the audience with this brilliant editing package.
——————————————-
Dialogues :
Amazing dialogues are provided by Jainendra Jain. Dialogues given to each character enhance the impact of that character. Dialogues carry successfully the change from one situation to another. Comical situation smoothly enters in to emotional loving situation. Transitioin from sad moments to happy moments happen quite convincingly because dialogues support the moods of the characters involved in those scenes.
——————————————-
Bobby and Styles :
Bobby was style statement also. There were no big branded costumes but what Rishi and Dimple wore became fashion statements. Its said that during his secluded days Raj Kapoor used to read Archies comics a lot and he designed Dimple’s character and her dresses on the basis of those comics. Rishi Kapoor’s big goggles, muflers, caps, dog’s ear shaped long collered shirts. Pran was given different and appealing suits. His under coat jackets used to have collars and pockets and these pockets gave a continuity to the body language of Pran because whenever he is boasting or feeling good on his wealth etc he keeps his hands in the pockets of his jacket and not in pockets of trousers as usually people do.
And Prem Nath’s trouser with half opened zip brings comical moments when he first time appears in that suit.
Even small motorcycle was named after the film.
————————
DD had declared in early 80s that it would telecast Bobby and though it was second telecast of Bobby it was a craze and people waited eagerly. Its mentioned that such was the popularity of Bobby in 1970s that when Jai Prakash Narayan had declared a public meeting to oppose policies of congress govt. then broadcasting minister had decided to telecast Bobby on TV just to affect people so that they would not go to attend JP’s rally.
During second telecast of Bobby on DD, a young teacher of 23-24 years age, who had already seen Bobby 25 times over the years, was dying to see it 26th time. He did not have a TV. He used to give tution in the evening at his house and he made arrangements with one of his student and finished tution class early and went to this student’s house to see Bobby. And next day that Student narrated the whole story how enthusiastically this teacher saw the Bobby 26th time. Later children started calling him Bobby wale Masterji.
————————
Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbeer Kapoor is going to be launched through Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film Saawariya.
Will Saawariya bring back freshness of Raj Kapoor’s pioneer love and youthful film?
Will Ranbeer Kapoor be able to impress audience as his father Rishi Kapoor had done?
Will he become youthful actor as Rishi Kapoor had become in 1970s?
Will Sonam Kapur be able to create effect which a fresh Dimple Kapadia had created?
Perhaps because of multiplex culture Saawariya will earn more money than Bobby but people have to see if it does same to Hindi cinema what Bobby had done and has been doing since then?

There needs to be some quality control around here.
Vikksterr chup!
RK Saab, thanks for this wonderful trip down the memory lane..But ek baat…Aap apka scripto mein ek scene aur doosra scene ke beech mein jaisa transition rakte ho…Cut to ya Dissolve ya Fade in…waise hi…Likhte samay paragraphs mein likhiye…Beech mein jagah chodioye…padne mein aasan hogi..
Was Bobby the first real teenager movie to come out from Hindi Film Industry?! I mean, the movie about teenagers, the key characters played by teenagers…
@HG, I think in a different context the first teen-ager movie was Balika Badhu. While Balika Badhu depicted of an era gone past,Bobby might be the first teenage love depicted in its own time.
@RK: A question : If your namesake broke away from his style of moviemaking with Bobby, why did he changed tracks again with Satyam Shivam Sundaram that was mostly about oozing oomph ? Maybe we need a separate post discussing perhaps the greatest showman of Bollywood.
I luv Bobby. Mindblowing film.
Never paid attention that Raj Kapor did not act in any of his film after Mera Nam Jokar. As his created Character Raju dies there. good analogy you pointed out.
I have read sumwhere that Nitu Singh was taken in the role of Bobby but Rishi Kapoor and Nitu Singh felt in love and Raj Kapoor brought new girl Dimple in. as he did not want his would be Daughter in law to present as actress.
This is a question what would happen if Dimple was not married off to leave films?
She was going to rule 70s. Every big hero would have worked with her and we could have seen her in many superhit films.
I am sure that Nargis and Madhubala have played their age-girl in a few films in the 40’s - love stories i.e.
… agree that every single love story made after Bobby was inspired by Bobby
now I see the similarities between Bobby and Sharabi. Even same Pran plays father of AB also with same characteristic proudness of being rich and carelessness towards son.
Raj kapoor was trend setter even in his worst avtar he was better than others. others just copied him and made bad films.
dont think savaria can match Bobby. It looks technical and imposed film unlike natural Bobby.
And Bhansali is not even 10% of Raj kapoor.
cant stop myself to say. after reading and commenting i have started missing dimple, rishi kapoor, premnath in bobby. those kashmir scenes, songs. i am feeling and realising that bobby is really my one of the favourite films. Will watch it today again.
thank you so much PFC for reminding me my favourite film.

@vikks terr,
Thank you for your quality control concern.

[Kisan bhaiyon ko apke is baat par tavajoh dene se bada faida hoga - Curtesy Krishi Darshan, DD] [ Farmer brothers will get benefits from your concern on this aspect].
Thanks for this word Quality control- Its a fascinating word.
Quality control is very important thing as far as a manicured garden in a compound is concerned.
Quality is going down day by day. Just now Ms Rice is asking Mr Musharaf to take care of quality control.
Mr Musharaf also tried to take care of quality control from his point of view.
Once upon a time one young Sanjay also decided to control the quality of humanbeing taking birth in the nation, but somehow some couple ditched him and his tight trap and their son or daughter cells often destroy many things on net.
Before that Sanjay China had decided that there should be some kind of quality control and hence strict 1 child policy.
Somewhere in 70s a thought was developed that the right to produce children should not be given to anyone and everyone and people all over the world should be stopped and only sperms of best of the males should be given to wombs of best females and hence human being can take a quantum leap and this way ordinary average or below averge people will be vanished from the earth. But there was a danger in that plan, because good and bad and average are relative terms and with that kinda quality control, todays good will become tomorrows average and then they will have to be vanished and this process will be continued till only one couple will be left. Male will be finest form of Adam and female will be finest form of eve. Then it will be a compulsion to accept whatever kind of children they get and hence again same randmonly distributed, chosen things will be in order.
—
Quality control is very much required. Bush Sir has been doing it in Iraq and Iraq is so fortunate place to become a lab for such quality control as some african countries and India and south east asian countries are for big drug manufacturing countries.
–
Quality control is must otherwise so called professional critics, who earn too good money from their pathetic reviews, will go on reviewing filmmakers and not their films.
—
Vikks…, man you have pointed out very good point. Its very useful for progress of cinema and as mentioned above not only Kisan bhailog but whole lot of people will get benefits from this concern.
Chaand ka munh terha nahin hoga tab ( Moons face will not be contoured then ) and people will rectify this shortcoming.
All should Hail the quality control !
Thanks for your good sense of humour
@Machchar ji,
thanks for your kind words. Will take care of these things next time. Sincere apologies that you and many had to go through the pre-final ball of the over.
In theory of parallel universe movement of a leaf somewhere, can create a big difference at some other place. Mouseless - wireless - neighbours elbow - immediate meeting - freedom at late night hour can do something similar.
—-
Beech mein hee nahin idhar udhar bhee full jagah
chorhunga aglee baar ( will leave enough space next time in all directions) afterall DD used to show that wonderful awareness clip where a man sitting in the field used to say- perh ho yan bachche fasla bahut jaruri hai ( Whether its matter of trees or children gap is must between the two).
Thanks Sir again.:)
H:G,
I may be missing some other films. But at present as far as I can recall Bobby should be the first Hindi film covering love story of teen agers in that manner.
Where story is fully based on ove story and where they take step of running away from the home. More over it was launching film for Rishi Kapoor and Dimple and perhaps there is no other film before Bobby where that age group actors were launched as hero and heroine. Their love was the basic foundation of the story.
Bishu: In Hindi Balika Vadhu was made some years after Bobby but perhaps in Bengali it was made earlier ( title Biraj Bahu ?) . Not sure.
Re: Raj Kapoor, we certainly need separate post where we can discuss him and his films.
He had made Sangam which was almost inspired by Mehboobs old film Andaj.
SSS was also inspired by his very first film Aag.
In Aag main character was a male while in SSS it was a female.
Female psyche goes for face value but male psyche goes on face as well as body value. We can discuss Exposure factor in SSS in the post devoted to Raj Kapoor but as I mentioned SSS was almost remake of Aag so that was not departure from his kind of imagination. Bobby was not his own thought. Market situations and demand of time might have activated him to make Bobby. We should consider the fact that Love Story was made in 1970 and Eric Segal’s book was also released in 1971 or 1972 and film and book both were hugely popular all over the world.
Love Story’s succsess and observation that youth, which belong to a generation which has got full parental support, financial support etc will be eager to see such film because when basic needs are fulfilled then youth has to go for love.
Before Bobby, RK used to make films revolving around struggling character because that was the best way to connect with masses. His character was striking on bigger social evils.
In Bobby its all about personal love. Its about generation gap.
Its bit selfish and his earlier films were anything but not limited to selfish personal desires only.
@M,
Not sure about Nitu Singh being selected for Bobby. But perhaps she also had given screen test for the role. She was a known child artist and perhaps Raj Kapoor was needing a fresh face.
Moreover now its impossible to imagine any other actress in the role of Bobby. Bobby has become synonymous with Dimple Kapadia.:)
Certainly if Dimple was not married before Bobby was released and if she was going to continue her acting career then perhaps many major films of that era were going in her kitty. We only can imagine. But she had shown a great promise in Bobby. She certainly was going to affect film career of many actresses of that era. If we imagine even one film with each active male star of that era then her presence and success can be easily imagined.
And she was the only actress who could have crossed the distance between westernized Zeenat Aman, Simi Grewal, Parveen Bobby to Indianized Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri etc.
She had to start again after 10 years when she did Saagar. If she had not left after Bobby she would have been much better actress and could have given many good films. 10 years is very long time. when she appeared in Saagar in the era of 80s then it was not a good time for hindi films.
80s is the era where even Dilip saab had to chose bad films among worst films because he wanted to be active in films.;)
Kaha thay RK ji itnay din?
Rkji kaha thay itnay din?
Premnath
RK writing about RK and RK, wah kya baat hai!!
RK bhai, how the hell do you manage to remember so many details about so many movies? Seriously. I wish I could a DB dump of your brain and preserve it for future generations. Sir, you need to write more.
@Vinayak,
Brother, last few lines of Faiz saab’s poem.
“ye wo sehar to nahin jiski arju lekar
chale the yaar ke mil jayegi kahin na kahin
falak ke dasht mein taron ki akhiri manjil….”
[This is not that dawn, in whose desire, we started the journey, believing that in heaven's vast space, somewhere must be the last halting place of stars]
——
Prem Nath was at full bloom during those years, Johny Mera Naam, Bobby, Kalicharan, each shouting aloud about his flourishing as an actor.
In Bobby he gave remarkable performance. sense of humour, anger, compassion, sadness, happiness, hate, quarrel, bonhomie etc so many things he showed with great skill.
–
To whom Pran can say this dialogue in Bobby? It belongs to some other film. Cant recall at present.
–
Short Dresses of Dimple. Do we have any other example before Bobby? Cant recall.
In that way it was quite ahead of its time. These days these short, mini skirts etc are common but then people certainly should have felt rush of Adrenaline in their body.
Desexed, ya thats the trend in the film. There are few things to be seen in the film, What counterpart of Bobby, Raja, sees and what camera shows us.
Raja and Bobby are in eye to eye contact and he is not scanning her in any of the scene.
Camera is Intelligent unlike many other films which try to present X-Ray report before audience. Thats one of the most beautifil camera use in such situations. It hides more than revealing and hence keeps audience curiosity intact. Moreover it puts up challenge before the audience and a male teenager who sees the film at the age of 14-18, will find him seeing it differently when he is in age group of 25-30.
Its subjective look in the film. depends on viewer.
Camera is honest and civilized. As the contents. Its not purely dreamy things to run away from home and everything will be fine. Such teen agers can face toughest situations outside of the home, even their life can be under danger. Goons can take benefits out of their situations.
Its school love but with sense. So in that way its a full story.
Desexed is the appropriate word you used. We have to watch poor Pran Saab when he saves Bobby and is bringing her out of ther river. Old man is so conscious while handling Bobby, unlike many other male actors.
Bobby film is a comics in the form of motion picture and tahts why its timeless.
When we watch now Love Story, Betaab, Maine Pyar Kiya, QSQT etc we feel that they were made years ago but Bobby’s present watching does not give that feeling. We have seen Rishi Kapoor in his old age but film presents a youthful character and not Rishi Kapoor, same happens with Dimple, she is youthful Bobby and these factors make it most young love story of all time. It has not got stale with time like other films.
Surely Bobby was based on class distinction and senior character’s lacking to accept new changes in life. There was difference between religion of lead male and female characters but this was never a question in the script.

Heard Sawariya has Hindu Muslim angle ala Bombay. lets see how film works with people in short term and long term. :-w

Did I underdtand your ” PPPPPPPPPP ” puzzle ? ??????
Dimple Kapadia had been one of the sizzling
actresses of 70s, 80s and 90s.She brought a
revolution in teenage romance
@Souvik,

yes Dimple brought revolution in teen age romance. Thats why boy who was not born even in 1973 when Bobby was released, feels crush on her (Akshay in DCH).
She revoltionised everything and made it youthful
