Bollywood 2008 My 10

It’s kind of a ritual for critics in the West to pick their favourite 10 films of the year gone by and even here in Bollywood newspapers and news channels are pouncing on the habit. But sadly, most of the papers and channels pick the Top 10 based on box office collections. While that to me is a great barometer to judge the quality of the film, it is not necessarily the best one. The paper I write for, they too, are going by the box office profits as a basis for zeroing on the best films of the year 2007. Which gives me complete liberty to pick my favourite 10 Bollywood films of this year. Here they are in no particular order with 5 keywords for each on why I have put them on the list. There’s a disclaimer in the end – the films I haven’t watched.

1. Mithya – Dark, Script, Lyrical, Ranvir, Satirical

2. Jodhaa Akbar – Rahman, Javed Akhtar, Hrithik-Ash, Lyrical, Old-school

3. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na – Fresh, Imran, Rahman, Abbas Tyrwalla, Fun

4. Mumbai Meri Jaan – Responsible, Heartfelt, Climax, Irrfan, Kay Kay

8. Fashion – Music, Mugdha, Kangana, Madhur, Shockers

9. Dostana – Fun, Abhishek, Music, Bodies, Boman

10. Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye – Real, Abhay, Dibakar, Richa, Loneliness

And the 10 I hated… and why

1. Race – Gimmicky, Manipulative, Loopholes, Fruits, Anil Kapoor

2. Tashan – Anil Kapoor, OTT, Garish, Story, Style

3. Love Story 2050 – Baweja, Baweja, Baweja, Baweja, Baweja

4. Mission Istaanbul – Zayed, Viveik, Girls, Apoo Lakhia, Script

personally, dont agree with fashion. thought it was too pretentious and typical madhur bhandarkar “in-your-face, non-subtle” movie. dostana is questionable, but to each his/her own…

A wednesday deserves a place in the top ten more than Fashion. As a concept and story A wednesday was fresh and of course the performances were great.I agree with you on the bottom 10 except Ghajni. You can put Haal e Dil there.Pure torture material.

    1. Rock On (well edited, fresh story, nice screenplay, songs, acting,,,,,)
    2. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa (nice & fresh, well hyped)
    3. Ghajini (My desi Kill Bill!, sad comparison i know, but Aamir can even pull this, I never thought so!!)
    4. Rab Ne bana di jodi(Everyone expects DDLJ kind of magic from them, its the expectations that killed the movie for everyone i presume)
    5. Jodhaa Akbar(although long, but kudos to Ashutosh to pull it off)
    6. Oye Lucky Lucky Oye(The best movie ever!!!!!)
    7. Mithya(dark, unlike hindi movies)
    8. Tashan (Loud, garish,cliche celebration)
    9. Aamir(nice build up to the climax)
    10. A Wednesday(no one mentions the restrained performance from Jimmy Shergill)

I should watch : Dasvidaniya, Mumbai Meri Jaan(since its on everyone’s list).

Wow RACE(everything can happen, anything can happen, depends on who is available on that day’s shoot), a rare gem of a movie.
