If you don’t want to sign up to read the NYTimes online, here’s a South Jersey paper with the story:

I’d be interested to hear whether contributors here think movie crews are paid fairly or sometimes not at all. The industry’s reputation from the two New York crew people I am friends with is not good.

Evelyn you are right, to date most of Bollywood studios, are run in a totally unprofessional manner. Payments are not proper, junior artistes, technicians are treated like slaves. Actually most of the Bollywood producers don’t even recognize the importance of technicians. And this is not the first time, such a strike is taking place. Stuntmen who do all the risky stunts, are paid a pittance, have no proper insurance in case of an accident or death. Many former artistes now languish in dire poverty. Seriously Bollywood really needs this kick right up.

the kind of movies bollywood has been making lately.. i think they are highly overpaid.. like those CEOs of failed financial companies..
the bollywood has been on strike (mental strike)for long time.. because no good has movie come out of bollywood.. in a long time.. just mediocre..
and as workers being treated poorely is concerned.. how shahrukh khan and amitabh bachchan not working for a day affected this?

Way to go…it’s time Bollywood treated everybody in its rank and file with the respect that they deserve…

I understand film-related unions demand closed shops and some directors feel this constricts their options, particularly for character types appearing in front of the lens. But I’ve also read in these news stories that the lower-paid crew and artists often are not given their wages for several weeks or until production is over, and they are sometimes paid less than was originally offered with little power to renegotiate at that point.

Or, they don’t get paid at all, which is what I think the strike is about.

Seems that the strike is called off with some settlement with the producers

This is huge! Thanks Evelyn for the tip.

It’s amazing that it has to come to this. I am brought back to the writers’ strike in Hollywood last year and how that almost seems frivolous compared to the basic needs of those behind the scenes in Bollywood…

p.s. great to hear that there is a settlement, though that almost makes me sad… I know it can’t be altogether fair…

Nina, I have a feeling you’re right. Has anyone read more of the specifics?
