Bollywood in the 90’s.
Ratnakar Sadasyula | Movies, Talking-Points | November 18, 2008 at 5:42 am
As i had stated in my first post, the 90’s was the decade which saw me becomming a full fledged movie maniac. And the 90’s was also the era when the map of the world changed totally. The Soviet Union collapsed, and we had countries separating and joining, like judwa bhai in a Bollywood flick. Countries like East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia became extinct, only to be seen in some old Cold War thrillers or novels. You had capital cities with tongue twisting names like Ljjublijana, Tbilissi.
Back home in India, single party dominance, gave away to coalition politics, and the Congress discovered that it no longer had a monopoly on the voter’s minds. Mandir and Mandal, became the new political buzzwords, and Liberalization, Globalization became the new keywords in the Indian lexicon. In cricket, a certain Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, became the hope for a billion Indians on the field, and whenever he was dismissed, a collective sigh of despair could be heard all over. Let a 1000 channels bloom, seemed to be the order of the day, as Cable TV, bought an end to Doordarshan’s monopoly, and TV channels seemed to spring up, every other week, each basically a variant of another.
And in a tribute to the 90’s, here is the list of my favorite Bollywood movies of that decade. Please keep in mind, i am giving a list of my favorite movies, which i had watched. So if you dont find the usual suspects like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, let me be clear, that i dont consider those movies bad, its just that they would never make it to list of my favorite movies.
Satya- Kya Kahen, is movie ke baare mein. Only one word, it is a masterpiece. This is the kind of movie which comes once in a blue moon. This is my top 90’s movie.
Sarfarosh- Hard hitting movie, that takes a realistic look at cross border terrorism. What i loved about this movie, was that the hero, is not shown as a one man army super cop, but as a normal person, who works along with his team. Great performances from Aamir Khan , Mukesh Rishi and Naseeruddin Shah.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander- A perfect entertainer in all ways. Director Mansoor Khan, takes an age old tale of the underdog winning in the end, and creates a movie that is entertaining and at the same time does not ask you to leave your brains behind. One of the best climaxes in recent times. Yet the movie also works because of the way, Mansoor depicts the bonding between the brothers. Great performances from Aamir, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Ayesha Jhulka, and of course the unforgettable Pehla Nasha song.
Andaz Apna Apna- One of the best comedy flicks. Director Raj Kumar Santoshi, adapts Dirty Rotten Scoundrels to a more desi setting, and the end result is just hilaruous. Aamir and Salman as the rogues indulging in a game of one up manship, share a great chemistry, though for me i like Salman’s dim witted act more. And who can forget Crime Master Gogo?
Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin- For me one of the best rom coms i have ever seen. And considering that i generally avoid movies of that genre, that is saying something. Taken again from It Happened One Night, Aamir Khan, is just delightful as the down on luck reporter chasing a scoop, while Pooja Bhatt is perfectly cast as the rich, arrogant heiress, if you can ignore her lisping.
Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Naa- One of Shahrkuh’s best performances ever, Kundan Shah comes up with another winner after Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. The tale of a loser, who flunks his exams, never does anything right, lies to get his girl, and at the end of it, still ends up losing his girl to another guy is heart warming, hilarious and touching. This is a movie that strikes a personal chord within you somewhere.
Vaastav- I would rate this after Satya, as one of the best gangster flicks. Sanjay Dutt, in a performance that is sheer brilliance in a role, that is a mixture of arrogance and vulnerability. He makes you fear him, when he shoots down his rivals, or when he shouts at his brother, yet when he whimpers like a kid, in front of his mother in the climax, you feel sorry for him. Sadly this movie would prove to be a kind of mill stone for both Sanjay and director Mahesh Manjrekar. Sunju would be saddled with gangster roles in dime a dozen roles, until Munnabhai MBBS, while Mahesh Manjrekar’s only worthwile movie after this was Astitva.
1947, Earth- Powerful on screen adaptation of Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel The Ice Candy Man by Deepa Mehta. Realistic depiction of the Partition riots, and the fall out. The climax scene is one of the most chilling in recent times. Aamir Khan is brilliant as usual in a totally negative role, especially in the last scene. Nandita Das, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Maia Sethna playing Lenny are equally good too, though i felt Rahul Khanna was plain bland. And yes a fabulous soundtrack by A.R.Rehman.
Ghayal- One of the hardest hitting movies of the 90’s. Raj kumar Santoshi, displays his skill as a storyteller, as he gives a slick adaptation to a routine vendetta tale. The scene where Sunny Deol finds his brother’s dead body in the rain, is brilliantly shot. And backed up with a top notch performance from Sunny Deol.
Prahaar- Pretty much underrated movie, which i felt deserved more. Nana Patekar is just first rate, as an army officer, who has to fight the goons in his neighbourhood. His outburst in the climactic court scene was brilliant. Also the training scenes, and the military operations were picturized in a realistic manner. Equally strong supporting performances from Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia.
Lamhe- This was a good movie, but was it great enough to be included in the Greatest Indian movies of all time. Well not in my opinion, i honestly felt the movie was a tad too overrated, and not the classic its made out to be. But still worth a watch, due to the performances from Anil and Sridevi, the music score by Shiv Hari, and Yash Chopra’s overall direction. Though must say i did like this movie much over Dil to Paagal Hai, but still would not rate this as one of his best.
Sardar- I would rate this as one of the best biopics ever made in India. Not too melodramatic, nor preachy, the movie effectively captures Sardar Patel’s persona, showing the key episodes in his life. Watch it for a memorable performance by Paresh Rawal, as he brings the legendary leader alive on screen, totally getting into the character. I find it hard to believe that it was the same Ketan Mehta, who helmed that atrocious Mangal Pandey.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge- I guess one of the few love stories that i still watch without wondering how did i like it earlier. The chemistry between SRK-Kajol really elevates the movie. And its non stop enjoyment, except for the last 15 minutes.
Rangeela- Though the movie made more waves for Ms. Matondkar’s legs and her sexy image, it was really well made. One of RGV’s best movies, and marked by a fabulous performance from Aamir Khan, as the tapori Munna. Not to mention one of Rehman’s best musical scores, and Gulshan Grover as Steven Kapoor.
Khamoshi- To date i would rate this as Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s best effort, where he focuses more on the story and characters, rather than the opulence. Very sensitively narrated, and great performances by Manisha Koirala, Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas. This movie certainly deserved a better reception at the box office.
Maachis- Though not as good as some of Gulzar’s earlier works, i would still rate this as one of the best movies of the 90’s. A very poignant look at terrorism in Punjab, it also had Tabu proving that she was the rightful heir to her aunt Shabana’s legacy. And above all this was the movie that introduced a certain Vishal Bharadwaj to Bollywood, one of the best things to happen.
Some honorable mentions( Movies not too great, not too bad).
Border, Yes Boss, Gupt, Damini, Hum Hain Raahi Pyar Ke, Aaina, Chamatkar, Aashiqui, Ghulam, 100 Days, Ghatak, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Hero No 1, Dulhe Raja
Well would love to see your 90’s favorites.

Hum dil de chuke sanam for sure and i kind of liked Darr too except shahrukh is way over the top if u watch it now
i am glad you mentioned Vastav ..its such an underrated film …Its climax is a killer..
I’m gonna try not to go into ‘Lamhe’.
I’ll be here all day.
Loved it! Beyond belief!
‘Bombay’ left a HUGE impression on me.
As did ‘Rangeela’!
I was obsessed with these films!
‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ was SHEER TORTURE!
It drove me mad!
Hated it!
Not a big fan of ‘D.D.L.J’ either.
It was ok.
Amrish Puri was great.
Ofcourse, films like;
Laadla
Khuda Gawah
Judai etc, etc were viewed a gazillion times due to Sridevi being in them!
There will never be anyone like her!
Is ‘ChaalBaaz’ 90’s?
Loved that too!
‘Pardes’ is probably the only recent-ish Subhash Ghai film that I liked.
Loved ‘Yes Boss’ and ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ too.
‘Drohkaal’ was ace too.
Made me view ‘art’ cinema in a light.
‘Prem’ was fantastic!
To hell with B.O results!
It’s a class film!
Gulzar’s ‘Hu Tu Tu’ was brilliant too.
Kya picture thi!
And…’Daud’!
Wah!
SriDevi, Madhuri, Juhi…
These girls are so damn fantastic!
They’d make even the shittiest of films look good.
Having said that, ‘H.A.H.Kaun’ and ‘RajKumar’ were just unbearable!
And Sri’s ‘Army’ was pants.
Other than that, can’t complain.
Nagurjana’s ‘Shiva’ was a 90’s film too na?
That was my introduction to RGV.
How my mum regrets that now! :-)
“Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar”
is my favorite Hindi movie,.
I was just 15 years old,
And felt connected to the characters
Uh-oh!
I obviously don’t know my name!
Sorry moderators!
I didn’t like it much at the time….
Not sure if i do now, but have watched ‘Dil Se’ around 40times!
Why? Manisha was incredible in that!
Awesome cinematography too.
And, ofcourse, that man, Rahman!
‘Baazigar’ was chilling for its time.
‘Ghayal’, ‘Ghatak’ and ‘Damini’ were super social drama’s.
Kunal Khemu’s ‘Zakhm’ was worthy of all the praise.
What a movie.
And, please don’t shout, but I loved the Govinda-Karisma film ‘Khuddar’!
It was fab!
*head hangs in shame*
@ Kunal
HDDCS was pretty nice, liked Ajay in it a lot.
Darr was kinda okayish, the climax was a straight lift from Cape Fear.
@ Anand
Yes loved Vaastav, especially the climax, it just hit me.
@ Steve
Lamhe was good as u said. I never liked HAHK much, for that matter even Maine Pyaar Kiya, bored me to death. Rajshri really gave some fab movies in the past like Dosti, Tapasya, Saudagar, but post MPK, most of their movies have been plain mediocre, though they might have been big hits.
No Chaalbaaz was in 80’s, but yeah me too a big fan of Sri, sat through some real torture flicks just for her sake. Check out some of her Tamil movies like Johnny, Moondru Mudichu, Moonram Pirai, she is just brilliant in those. Even in Judaai, she shone in a totally thankless role as a greedy wife.
Khuda Gawah was good to begin with, but it started going nowhere later, and just meandered on.
Dil Se for sure, I have watched it more than 10 times and can watch it endlessly forever. I have the dvd waiting for blu ray disc if ever it would release in it. Sound is amazing, camera work exotic, cast acted amazingly, every reason to watch it over and over.
My list would also include
1. Roja
2. Drohkaal
3. Aankhen(Govinda, it was funny then)
4. Bombay (watch it for ARRahman’s music if not for anything else)
5. Maachis
6. Jo jeeta wohi sikandar(watched it 4 times in 4 days, thats my personal record to boast).
7. Wajood
Roja, Andaz Apna Apna, Rangeela,
@ Steve for that matter i did not like Pardes much either, though Taal was good mainly because of Anil Kapoor.
Oops forgot Drohkaal, that was a fantastic movie, great performances from Naseer and Om Puri. Wonder whats happened to Govind Nihalani of late, neither Takshak nor Dev were anything great.
Well Shiva Hindi version was a 90’s flick but the original Telugu version was an 80’s one. Actually it was released in 1989, so for all practical purposes u could consider it a 90’s flick.
Check out Madhuri’s 100 Days if u can, i thought it was a fairly decent thriller. Rajkumar was yucky, Anil Kapoor just did not cut it out as a desi Robin Hood.
@ Shekar
JJWS is an eternal favorite. To date i still can watch that movie. The bonding scenes between the 2 brothers, the campus fisticuffs, the Archie-Reggie kinda rivalry and the climax cycle race, everything adds up to a perfect entertainer.
@ Steve
Somehow never really liked Dil Se much. Yes the technical values were good, the music score by ARR was fab, there were good performances from SRK and Manisha, but somehow the story was way too confusing for me, too many threads going on.
Zakhm, was one of Mahesh Bhatt’s best. Loved both Kunal and Ajay in it. In fact it redeemed Mahesh Bhatt’s reputation after a series of duds.
You are right about Madhuri,Juhi and Sridevi. Really miss them a lot. They could carry any movie on their own. In fact in 1993 Juhi was ready to take over from Madhuri, after a series of hits like Aaina, Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke, Darr, Lootere, but some lousy movies really derailed her career. I really dont understand how she signed on such movies in the first place. But Yes Boss and Deewana Mastana, represented a kind of comeback for her.
Well as for Govinda, i like him in his comedy roles, more than his serious ones. I really enjoyed Coolie No 1, Hero No 1, Deewana Mastana( fab comedy), Dulhe Raja.
@ Gony Dhoni
Good list of movies there, though Dil Se is not one of my favorites. Like most of the other movies u mentioned, though have not seen Wajood.
Ratnakar, I didn’t mind ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ too much.
But ‘Hum Dil De Chuke’ did my head in!
Salman was a punishment for all the wrong i’ve done in my life!
Terrible! He ruined it man!
‘Vaastav’? Yes.
Sunjay in his element.
Those Tamil Sridevi films are now on my list, thanks to u :-)
How can I forget ‘100 Days’??
What a chiller!
I know it’s that Laura Mars film, but we really loved it.
‘Drohkaal’ was such an eye opener for me.
Really got me into alternative cinema!
And I loved ‘Thakshak’ man!
Gony Dhoni, I also liked ‘Wajood’.
Quite a twisted film.
Well Nana was anyway.
I’ve been meaning to get back to that film for a while.
Did any of u see ‘Yugpurush’?
That was another Nana film I really liked.
Re ‘Dil Se’? It’s an odd one.
I’ve seen it so many times, but not for the story.
I’m still undecided about this one.
@ Steve
Thakshak was not bad as such, but compared to Govind Nihalani’s earlier flicks was not too great
Regards Nana, he is one of my favorites.
Watched every movie of his in the 90’s “Prahaar”, “Angaar”,”Tirangaa”,”Krantiveer”,” Agnisakshi”, ” Ghulam E Mustafa” and of course “Khamoshi”.
Even as of now, i just loved his performance in Ab Tak Chappan and Bluffmaster.
@ ratnakar…
great list…
i love all the films uve mentioned….a special attachment since they are a part of my childhood……
very nice list of movies…..
some i would like to add from the masala point of view
tere mere sapne
Mohra
khiladi
coolie no. 1 (i just love this one)
deewana mastana
Mr and Mrs Khiladi ( oye bachche ki jaan lega kya )
bade miyan aur chotte miyan ( it released on the same day as kuch kuch hota hai..but i saw this one and i dont regret one bit)
Ziddi
sadak
gumraah(sridevi)
tiranga
krantiveer(nana special)
yeshwant( this ones realistic and fantastic)
aankhein 9 i dunno if this released in the 90’s)
shola aur shabnam
Dulara (good thriller)
What about ‘Yugpurush’ and ‘Hu Tu Tu’?
Did u see those?
They’re really good movies IMO.
@ Ratnakar
You’ve taken me on a nostalgic ride my friend.I would say I personally like almost all the films in your list .HereSatya is my favourite bollywood gangster film too.Sarfarosh was again brilliant- kept you engrossed throughout.Vaastav- again sincere.Andaz Apna Apna is among my favourite comedy films- full time pass.Rangeela- Urmila, Aamir & ARR made it memorable for me.Ghayal- powerful,DDLJ- probably my all time favourite romantic flick, Gupt- for the music & the brilliant clima, like Baazigar & Darr- both had great music and the emergence of a new trend- the anti hero portrayed by SRK.Aashiqui- only for the best soundtrack of the 90’s, movies of Mukul Anand- Agneepath- Big B show, Khudagawah- wide canvas & great casting, Hum- now thats what I call an entertainer.I also liked the movies of Mani Rathnam- Roja, Bombay & Dil Se.I think Dil Se is my favourite among them.Movies of Govinda like Aankhen,Deewana Mastana,Hero No.1, Dulhe Raja etc,of course JJWS- connected with the movie majorly.
Liked Daud,Drohkaal, Khiladi,Mohra,Tere Mere Sapne, Chachi 420, Sadak etc.
Steve- I’ve seen Yugpurush- “chale hum do jan sair ko chale sang chali haryali ”
Ratnakar- do you know 100 days was actually a remake of a tamil movie incidentally called nuravathu naal ( means 100 days) which had Mohan,Vijaykanth & Sathyaraj!!!
Liked Khamoshi & HDDCS also.I think I really liked Kareeb too- lilting music & lovely locations.Judwaa- mad comedy & brilliant tapori soundtrack- remember- tu mere dil me bas ja,oonchi hai building etc? Of course how can I forget Dil To Pagal Hai- Madhuri couldnt have looked better & Karishma was good too ( swept the awards- best supporting actress) & the music was outstanding.I liked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai too at that time. And I was blown away by Bade Miyan Chote Miyan- again one of my favourite comedy films ( yes it was inspired by Bad Boys)
No baazigar? Yeh kya hain Ratnakar bandhu??? ehehe..nice list…was Daddy released in 90’s? what about Kaash?
Dillagi was ok too…the hindi remake of Premikudu..urvassi was a rage…and Duniya Dilwaalon Ki…Mustafa Mustafa..
90’s were depressing time,(for me)
I was young, and I hated Hindi movies, yes I hate most of them even now,.(I love few of them)
I was exposed to “Indiana Jones” and all the other wonderful movies from the west;
and those movies really help me
@ Shekhar
So does that mean that all of us who’ve written about our favourite bollywood movies did not have an exposure to movies from the west?
Dude if you arent the hindi movie buff then stay away, atleast dont make such sarcastic comments.I dont know why people are trying to say movies of some geography/language are better than the others?
@Sethumadhavan
I didn’t say “you guys didn’t have exposure about west,”
You guys are senior to me,
I respect your comments
For me it is not about geography or language;
It is about 90’s Hindi cinema
@ Shekhar
Nothing personal dude.It was just an instant reaction from my side.Probably because after the horrible 80’s the 90’s were a welcome break for bollywood lovers like me & so I was kind of taken aback by your statements thats all!!!
@Sethumadhavan,
same here yar,
I love old Black & White Hindi Cinema ,.
especially Films like :
*Bahot din huye (Fairy Tale)
*Mahal (Indian Gothic)
*Woh Kaun Thi (Mystery)
*Azad (Romantic)
and lots of other
Yaar Sethu, tera gussa bada danger hai re!
Remind me not to get on the wrong side of u man ;-)
But, wasn’t ‘100 Days’ a remake of the 70’s ‘The Eyes Of Laura Mars’?
And what did u think of ‘Yugpurush’? Wasn’t it a true odd ball?
Every character was so unusual.
‘Kareeb’ was one of my faves.
I remember dragging friends along with me when I went a 3rd time to see it, and they mocked me, ”How the hell did u sit through this twice and now a 3rd time?!”
They hated it!
‘Kuch Kuch…’? Class!
‘DTPH’?? Yikes!!
@ Steve
Laura Mars was first made in Tamil as Nooruvathu Naal, where incidentally it was Mohan who was the baddie.
100 Days was based on it, but still loved it. It had a good soundtrack also “Sun Beliye”,”Sundari”. Also loved the performance from Javed Jaffrey.
Yugpurush if u ask me was a movie ahead of its time. Nana Patekar and Manisha were just brilliant in the movie. I think it was based on The Idiot. Jackie was however totally bland.
In fact i also liked Agnisakshi, mainly for Nana’s performance. He was really chilling.
During the 90’s, Manisha was one of my favorites with movies like Bombay, AHAT, Khamoshi, Agnisakshi, Yugpurush. Kyaa hogaya usko, nowadays looking totally bloated and appearing in utter B Grade stuff.
@Shekar
Me too love most of the old B&W stuff. Most of em were awesome. Woh Kaun Thi and Mera Saaya, were some of the best thrillers made.
@ Steve
For me both DTPH and KKHH were boredom.
The problem was it just created a sense of deja vu for me.
When i was seeing KKHH, it seemed DTPH redux for me.
And Mohabattein was the last straw for me.
OM well baazigar was not exactly one of my favs. Did like it that time, but having been exposed of late to stuff like Manorama, Johnny Gaddar, Baazigar does not really make the cut.
Yeah i think Daddy came in the 90’s, Kaash was a 80’s flick, one of the few good movies during the torture decade.
@ ashwin
Well from the masala stuff u mentioned
Tere Mere Sapne was good. Mohra was okayish, i liked Gupt more.
Liked most of Govinda’s comedy flicks, my all time favorites being Dulhe Raja and Deewana Mastana. His serious movies like Achanak and Maharaja sucked though. Hey loved BMCM, it just left me rolling throughout, Govinda-AB’s chemistry was excellent, and Paresh Rawal was just brilliant.
Yeah Aankhein came in the 90’s and was one of the biggest hits, Shola Aur Shabnam not one of my favs, too much maar dhaad stuff.
Nana Patekar is one actor, whose any movie i can watch just for his sake.
@Steve
I seen Hu Tu Tu, and liked it for Nana patekar and Tabu. Also i guess one of the very few movies where i could tolerate Sunil Shetty on screen.
Not as good as Maachis though i felt. The climax was quite unsatisfactory.
@ Sethu
Regards Khudagawah, the movie started off really well. The opening scene was as good as any Hollywood flick. But later on the movie totally lost track, and just wandered into No man’s land.
Kareeb had good music and photography, but pretty standard story and never really like Bobby Deol.
Ratnakar,
That is a nice list. Like most of the movies in there. Would include Roja (though dubbed) and Dil Se in my list of favourite Hindi movies of the 90s. I gather from your various articles that you are a fan of the tamil films too. Why not a piece on your favourite tamil films of the 90s. Tamil films were quite superior, both in content and technique, to Hindi films in the 90s. Of course now (with the advent of the multiplex culture)Hindi films have gone way ahead and the tamil film industry has regressed.
@ Steve
Dont worry you wont get on the wrong side of me yaar
Yes even I agree with Ratnakar- Yugpurush was slightly ahead of its time. And yes Nana & Manisha were both good.I think the movie suffered as people went to see it with an Agnisakshi hangover
@ Ratnakar-Yes even I’ve mentioned Nooravadhu Naal as the source for 100 days. And yes the songs were good- Sun beliye& Gabbar Singh were the pick of the lot for me.
@ Shekhar- I am a big fan of the b& w era too- but wouldnt discuss them here now as that requires a seperate thread in itself.
@ Raj
There is an article on Tamil Cinema written by Dazed & Confused around 10 days back.In the discussion board, people like myself, Ratnakar,Steve,Arthi etc have gone & on about our favourite tamil movies. Please do have a look buddy & maybe you can add yours too there!!!
Talking about bollywood masala I dont know how people have missed out on Karan Arjun & Koyla- both from Rakesh Roshan.
Both the movies when seen @ first attempt, seemed extremely irritating but on repeated watching ( special thanks to Set Max ) I find them especially Karan Arjun to be the quintessential bollywood masala- with the right amount of tadka in the dal or should bhelpuri be the right word.
@ Sethu
In fact i liked Rakesh Roshan’s Khel a lot. Many people actually hated that movie, but i thought it was a well made comedy. Anil, Madhuri and Anupam were all great in that movie.
Karan Arjun was fine, but it started to drag a lot in the second half, the same problem i had with another Rakesh Roshan flick Kishan Kanhaiya, where the climax seemed to go on forever.
I guess Baazigar was the strategic inflection point for me where the hero can kill the heroine. I was shocked, excited and cleanly bowled by it. It was introduction of Gray for me. Darr was the encore. So I love both the movies in 90s
Loved Dil Se, Bombay and DDLJ. Liked Ghulam, JJWS, KHKN.
KKHH I liked in bits and pieces, found DTPH better, I guess YRC knows what YRC does better.
Like Khamoshi, Kareeb, Border, Raju.. Gentleman, Gardish, Angaar, Virasat, Yes Boss, Pardes, HDDCS, HAHK, Mohra, Andaaz Apna Apna, Sarfarosh, Maachis, Drohkaal, Satya, Deewana Mastana, Aankhen, Dulhe Raja.
I even liked few movies that were not so great in eyes of others but still, like Barsaat, Ziddi (Mera Dil le gayi Kammo song :-) ), Baadshah (I know), Gumraah (Sridevi), Daud etc.
Few movies that I could never like but were hits or liked by others: Taal, Kaun, Raja Hindustani, Gupt, Raja, Beta, Dil, Rangeela, Biwi No 1,
I think I am 90s product so love the 90s. Anybody who disagrees, can go and take a hike :-))
Ratnakar, ‘Yugpurush’ was definitely way ahead of its time.
It was Partho Ghosh at his best.
‘Agnisakshi’ wasn’t really a film that I liked all that much.
Sure, Nana was fantastic, but the 1st half was so average.
Quite a shoddy film.
I still maintain that Manisha’s performance in ‘Dil Se’ is one of the best performances by an indian actress of recent times!
But, she’s definitely a directors actress.
As she can be both good and bad in the same film.
Kya hogeya usko?
In one word…
Unproffesionalism!
@Vishesh
Yaar, i am very much a 90’s guy and love that era.
.
Angaar was a pretty good movie, but had a senseless climax.
Well i hated Raja Hindustani, total yawn fest for me.
And any movie of Indra Kumar, is simply intolerable for me. I have no clue how Dil became a hit, it was such a crappy movie. Beta was watchable due to Madhuri, but Raja was another horrible movie.
Sethu, thanks..will check that article out.
Ratnakar, Would also like to add 1942 – A Love Story and Kaun to that list of favourite 90s Hindi movies.
@ Steve
Problem with Manisha, was that unlike Sridevi or Madhuri, she could not carry a movie on her shoulders, nor she could make a rank bad movie like Nagina or Raja a hit.
And watching her in some real torture flicks like Guddu, Sangdil Sanam, Maharaja, Achanak, really made me cringe.
@ Raj, yeah sure do, maybe i would come up with a post on 90’s Tamil cinema, but IMO, i felt the best movies in Tamil cinema, came during the 70’s and 80’s. The Tamil movies in 90’s were far slicker and sophisticated, but if you take content wise, the movies of 70’s and 80’s were better.
Ratnakar, totally agree with you on Indra Kumar. One of the loudest, crappiest filmakers ever. Raja, Dil..ughh! Dharmesh Darshan was also a torture club filmmaker, have you seen ‘Mela’…pure horror!
Well Ziddi was full time pass movie with trademark Sunny Deolisms.
“Paanch baje ke baad, Deva ka adalat shuru hota hai”.
Salakhen was quite a bore however.
I loved Sunny in Damini, especially his outburst in the Tareekh Pe Tareekh scene.
Also his performance in Ghatak, when he breaks down, on knowing that Amrish Puri will be dying soon.
@ Raj
Fortunately i missed out on Mela, for me Raja Hindustani itself was such a bore.
Was unlucky enough to see the other Dharmesh flick Dhadkan, my God, Sunil Shetty hamming it up big time. Dunno how he got the Best Villian award for that.
And I did not even bother to check out Bewafa or Haan Maine Bhi Whatever Whatever.
Ratnakar I never got into ‘DTPH’.
It just didn’t do it for me.
Sure, Mads looked like an angel, and Karisma was good, but it was a bit boring to watch.
‘Kuch Kuch’ for me, set a standard.
So many bad love stories were out then.
I went a bit pagal over that!
Saw ‘Hu Tu Tu’ before ‘Maachis’, and at the time I was blown away.
Alot of ppl hated it, but I found it to be a very interesting and thought provoking film.
Tabu was excellent!
As for Bobby Deol, I simply love him!
He’s a spitting image of my cousin!
@ Steve, me no big fan of DTPH either. Got bored with all that “Dosti, Pyaar” baashans. But yeah the females loved it to death, and for some time, i had to endure lectures on how i was so stonehearted as to miss the message.
I liked Bobby in Gupt, and in fact do like him in some of his later movies like Humraaz, Jurm.
In fact i really liked his performance in Tango Charlie, pretty underrated movie i felt.
I think Bobby Deol does well in the serious action role kind, never like him much in the romantic stuff.
I think 90s was a relief after the bad 80s. I can’t imagine I watched Ganja Jamuna Saraswati, Toofan, Jaadugar to name a few of AB’s movies. Or something like Dharam Paaji movies: Naaka bandi, Kaun Karega Kurbani..wow..I was demented guys..
I still remember a song: Its a challenge, Its a challenge..from some Govinda movie :-)
Yup, Sunny Paaji was good in Ghatak and Ghayal even Damini. He was hilarious in Jeet with that Rambo look and that earth-shattering dance: Yaara o Yaara!
@54 typo,
Oops..it should be Ganga instead of Ganja…or is it a Freudian Slip..I should damn be on Ganja to watch that movie :-)
Talking about Sunny Paaji, Damini,Ghayal,Ghatak & even Ziddi were all quite good.BTW do you guys remember the
in Sunny Paaji!!!
” yaara o yaara milna hamara ” from another of his hits –
Jeet ( with Karishma, Tabu & Salman Khan)- that song gets the (dis)credit for making Sunny Paaji dance from then on.
So be it a ” mere dil le gayi o kammo” a ” chammak challo”
a ” dil mera churane laga ” etc all brought out the
hidden dancer
@ Vishesh
Yes, compared to the torture decade of the 80’s, 90’s was much better.
The songs were good, after a long time, i didn’t feel compelled to take a break during the songs.
But AB’s movies were as bad in the 90’s as they were in the later half of the 80’s.
Barring Agneepath, most of AB’s 90’s movies would make it to the torture series-Mrityudaata, Lal Baadshah, Aaj Ka Arjun, Ajooba.
Jeet was Muqaddar Ka Sikandar redux, with Sunny Paaji doing AB’s role, Karishma in Rakhee’s role and Tabu in Rekha’s role.
Raj I loved Kaun too.
And talking about Bobby Deol, apart from Kareeb & Gupt I also enjoyed Soldier ( RajVijay’s next movie Villu is a rip off from Soldier
)
Sethu ji! I won’t get on the wrong side of u?
Damn right there! ;-)
‘Karan Arjun’ was good, so was ‘Khel’.
But I really didn’t think much of ‘Koyla’.
The music was great (although stolen from Vangelis!) I even liked SRK, but picture? Nope.
Ratnakar, I love ‘Nagina’ man!
Excellent, but ‘Raja’? Yup, bad film, but Magical Madhuri makes it rock!
Man, how funny was she in those comedy scenes?!
Vishesh!
Sunny Deol in that earth-shattering dance ‘yaara oh yaara’?
ROTFL!!
Sunny paaji ki jai ho!!
Steve, have u seen Madhuri’s Mrityudand?
It is a really good movie i felt. Great performances from Madhuri, Shabana and Shilpa Shirodkar.
Even in this decade, loved her performances in Pukar, Lajja( simply brilliant) and Devdas.
Have not seen Aaja Nachle, but from what i hear, the movie was not too great.
i do not know but i always felt sarfarosh was a commercial movie ,there was a rain song a bar song also patriotic dialogues.
Sardar i do not know but it did not impress me.
On regional front i think Indian staring kamal hassan directed by shankar was great.
Mani sir’s iruvar starring Mohanlal think is one of the most underrated movie.
Fazil,s manichitrathazu which was remade into many languages in hindi as bhool bhulaiya was great in thriller genre.
Of coure as i child i liked
mohra,
hero no 1,
Judwaa (atf)
Satya,
Daud,
Rangeela,
HAHK
But to date i really can’t understand how Anil Kapoor won the Best Actor for Beta???/
It was seriously a WTF decision.
Anil is a good actor, but getting it for Beta, which was an out and out Madhuri movie.
As also Salman Khan getting the Best Supporting Actor for a role in KKHH, which could have been done by anybody, and overlooking Manoj Bajpayee’s brilliant act in Satya. Seriously WTF?
Oh gawd!
Not u aswell Ratnakar?!
I too had that lecture from EVERY girl who watched ‘DTPH’!
I just couldn’t win that one.
Add to that, my adorable niece decided that it was going to be her fave film, and INSISTED on watching it day and night! The vhs tape snapped!
It did my bloody head in!
But, not to worry, as my niece had another copy!
Since ‘97 up until now, i’m being tortured by that ‘profound’ film!!
I’m going to sue Yash Chopra for that!
Unforgivable!
It actually put me off ‘pyar’ and ‘dosti’!
Grr!
Was going to mention Mrityudand when you did now Ratnakar. The script was weak. But MD as usual shone.
I cant remember a single film of Madhuri where I can say – she didnt act well here. Not possible. Thats what I really like @ her. She is a true actor. She has done the crappiest of films. In fact when I see the late eightes and nineties films of Madhuri I still am not able to understand how could she do such torturous roles. Yarana was one such. I have survided that viewing til date no clue how I did.
Yet, some of them were super hits.
Typo : survived that viewing..
Sorry..
Yeah, Bobby bhaiya was very good in ‘Humraaz’ and ‘Tango Charlie.
Actually, i’m a bit mental with this Bobby thing.
I even go to the cinema’s to watch rubbish like ‘Chamku’ coz of him.
Too late. Damage’s been done.
He’s Bobby bhaiya and I guess that’s a bad reason to like an actor, but there u are!
‘Mritudand’ was good.
And ‘Lajja’? Bad!
But Madhuri in ‘Lajja’? Fantastic!
Man, she was magic!
She does remind me of another relative (mera poora khaandan filmi hain!) but I love her for her talent!
Hey…when was Hum hain raahi Pyaar ke released? I loved the movie when i watched it..that was the time i had fallen in love with Juhi..ehehe
Madhuri and Sridevi, are the last of those heroines like Rekha, Hema Malini who could pull a movie just on their name alone.
They can make even a totally crappy movie a success.
After Madhuri, we just don’t have any such heroine. Most of current crop of heroines are director’s actresses, they do well given a good role and director, but i don’t foresee any of them, making a movie hit, just on their name.
Well you guys have named almost all my favourites.Just want to add a few:
1)Sadak(good performance by Sanjay Dutt, overall a good film with nice music)
2)Khiladi(It did to Akshay Kumar what Baazigar did to Shahrukh…i.e made him a superstar)
3)Pyar To hona hi tha(Though a rip off from an English movie still watchable due to good performance by lead actors and good music)
4)Dushman-Kajol…you need to watch her in this one!!!
5)Sangharsh-Good performances.
6)Kya Kehna-Another of Kundan Shah’s well narrated stories.
Sethu, they are remaking ‘Soldier’ now after all these years!
Ratnakar, when did filmfare awards make sense? Kunal Kohli winning the best director award for Hum Tum!
@ OM
Yeah it was in 1993.
In fact 1993 was Juhi’s year all the way, HHRPK, Darr, Lootere, Aaina had all pushed her to top spot.
But some messed it up with some real dud movies like Saajan Ka Ghar, Eena Meena Deeka,Kartavya, Raam Jaane. And later with Karishma Kapoor taking over, she found it even harder. But still love her, for her natural acting and her comic scenes. She was fab in Yes Boss.
Salman Khan got Best Supporting actor over Manoj Bajpai??
Over Manoj Bajpai in ‘Satya’????!
Ratnakar….
Yes.
W.T.F?!!!!!
I didn’t even know this!
Gimme a few mins to get over this!
True Ratnakar…
DTPH had one gem of a scene. I dont remember well but its just struck 12 midnight VDay eve and then we have Ms MD running to the window to check out the first guy who passes by her window to be ‘the one’ for her. (I think her friend suggests this, right?)
I had no words; just wondered and wondered, what the hell is happening. Just for this scene how could Madhuri agree to do the role I felt then. It was too much to bear…
@ Steve
Well it was in 1998.
Actually down the line Filmfare i think came up with this tendency to give away the maximum awards to the biggest hit movie of that year.
Started with HAHK in 1994.
And so the trend continued in 1995 with DDLJ taking away everything.
And thats how the lousy Raja Hindustani, won all the awards in 1996, over Khamoshi, which was much more deserving.
Karishma Kapoor’s act in Raja Hindustani, was not as great as Tabu’s in Maachis or Manisha’s in Khamoshi.
Same thing in 1997, when DTPH took everything, just coz it happened to be the year’s biggest hit.
And it continued for KKHH.
Ohh yes..not to forget Juhi in Bol Radha Bol..i liked that one too…ehehe
what??? you didnt like Raam Jaane? God..i loved it..and wore a jacket without shirt at one of the school functions..only to get sound trashing from all the teachers..lol!!
@ OM: Naam Om, hated Ram Jaane to the core, SRK’s hamming just got on my nerves
.
@ Arthi: Nice scene there from DTPH. But actually i felt Karishma overshadowed Madhuri here. Or maybe the fact that her character was better than Madhuri’s.
Has everyone forgotten Bandit Queen???
And other arthouse classics like Thoda sa Roomani Ho Jaayein, Naseem, Muhafiz, Making of Mahatma, Mammo Saaz, Daayera, Fire, Bombay Boys, Is raat ki subah nahin and Kabhi haan Kabhi naa?
Also, there was the delightful redux version of Chhota Chetan.
@ Anindya
Sadak was a good movie, had some good songs, and great performances from Sunju and Pooja Bhatt. Mahesh Bhatt made some really good movies in first half of 90’s Sadak, Aashiqui, Gumraah, Sir, Dil Hai Ki, Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar ke, god knows what happened to him later, when he made all crappy stuff.
Pyaar to Hona Hi Tha, was enjoyable, mainly due to Kajol. Dushman was good, but never liked Sangarsh.
@Pawan
I think i mentioned KHKN, Earth and Sardar in my list.
.
Thoda Sa was a fabulous movie, a realistic depiction of small town life, caught it on TV.
Missed out on some of the movies you mentioned, as basically most of my movie viewing in the 90’s was in a small town, and the Hindi movies we got were usually the commercial, mainstream stuff.
I did hear about Is Raat Ki Subah, supposed to be one of Sudhir Mishra’s best, but have not been able to catch it later.
@ Pawan – Thoda Sa..is a little gem by AP.
Most of the other films you mention too were these offbeat ones of the nineties.
@Ratnakar – I couldn’t stand that scene in DTPH..:-/….Guess I gave the wrong impression ..worded so I think….
For me Sathya,Roja,Bombay and Vaastav were the best movies in 90’s.Satya is one of the finest movies ever made..a reamrkable cinema made by one of the finest director’s of indian cinema..RGV
Talking of Satya, I always like Company over Satya. Satya is good but Company rules! IMHO.
Ram Jaane was a different experience altogether. I still marvel that SRK has so much energy remaining even after doing RJ. It was 3 hours of nuclear fusion. So I like it because of it irrational, irrelevant, illogical energy levels. So what if it is copy of “Angels with dirty faces”
Pyar to Hona hi tha: I think AD ruined it for me but I love the climax of the movie till another-airplane-stopping-and-dont-give-a-f**k-about-other-passengers part.
Was Muskurahat in 90s? I liked the songs and Revathi. Bobby , I don’t know I thought he had potential but he went Manoj Bajpai way doing B-grade stuff.
Ratnakar! Truly Enjoyable!
I saw many of these films in my school days on cable! One thing about being born in 88!! :P
I will include “KAUN” a really nice psycho-thriller in my list with notable performances from Urmila, Manoj & Sushant. Real good!
Also, “Is raat ki subah nahi, dharavi,Thoda sa Roomani Ho Jaayein, saaz”
To each his own! it’s difficult to rate best films like this. We need a proper survey and statistical conclusions for that. Anyway, I want to ask the moderator and the creators of this site that ‘Don’t you think latest comments should be at the top and earlier ones at the bottom? That’s how it is generally done and that’s how it should be. It’s only logical to have it that way.
@ Manjusha
I think i had made it very clear throughout my post, that these are my favorite movies, not necessarily the Best.
And in fact Best movies is totally subjective. To date there are many who feel Godfather is overrated, and fans of Godfather are not able to digest the fact that The Dark Knight has overtaken Godfather in IMDB Top List.
This is nothing to do with ratings, and what people gave here are their favorite movies.
In fact if you ask me, asking people to give their favorite movies, makes more sense. Because when you ask them the Best movies of the 90’s, they are sure to go with the majority opinion.
@ 32
Kaun was a fab movie for sure. Have not seen Is Raat Ki, though heard a lot about it.
@ Girish
Satya is my choice any day for the No 1 Bollywood movie of the 90’s. Nothing really comes close to it.
for me the best film of 90’s is:
satya – from 1 to 10
sarfarosh- 11
andaz apna apana – 12
DrohKaal – 13
Zakhm -14
Ghayal -15
Yes how can I miss out Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin- I really loved the movie- it was brilliant. Also the music by M.M.Kreem was so soothing.
@ Ratnakar- I always was on the lookout for the DVD/VCD of the movie & just last month I happily found a VCD @ a Planet M store In Hyderabad.its been released by Big Video.I think DVD is not yet.You should check it out too.I think Nirmal Pandey ( where’s he these days) was also an underrated actor.Loved him in Daayara, Bandit Queen,Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin & even in Hadh Kardi Aapne ( yes I loved the movie- can watch it even now
)
May be we can have a post on our guilty pleasures! Movies that were “bad” but we like them still :-)
A person I know would forever keep on crooning the song Oye Raju! from HKA.
@ Arthi
If you may allow me to correct you.In DTPH Mads’ friend doesnt say anything like that to her.In fact Mads tells her friend that her she would know when her “man” would come. When asked how would she know, would she get some signal etc, Mads’ says ” woh mujhe ishara karega” or something like that ( of course woh= oopar wala). So on Feb 14th ( Valentine’s nite) after SRK makes a call to Mads’ from a phone booth outside her place ( of course by mistake, as he was trying to call Karishma) & then leaves the booth ( after asking if she was listening to Pt.Shiv Kuamr Sharma’s latest album) he whistles the trade mark tune of DTPH & thats when she feels she’s got the ishara.
Steve & Ratnakar-
I know you guys are feeling I’ve lost it.But I used to be an authority on DTPH yaar!!!
@ Vishesh
Oh well i have many such guilty pleasures
1) Jaani Dushman Ek Anokhi Kahani
2) All the crappy movies of AB- Jaadugar, Toofan, GJS, Lal Baadshah, yeah can watch me just for sake of AB
3) Most of the Ramsey movies, coz i love horror flicks.
4) All the Mithunda Ooty flicks
@ Sethu
Maan Gaye guru, so am i expecting something from u on DTPH now.
Yes i did hear of Big Video, but dont think its come yet to Bhubaneshwar.
@ Srikanth
Well i guess ur list matches mine perfectly
@ Vishesh
Yup I recall the song- Oye Raju, pyar na kariyo, kariyo, dil toot jaata hai. chahat ki baat na kariyo, kariyo, dil toot jaata hai
When I was in B.School there was a guy called Rajeshwar
( Raju) who fell in love with a junior & then we used to always pull his leg by singing this song
Oh man, had a ball of a time, with Govinda songs.
“Main to raste se jaa raha tha”
” Mere pant bhi sexy”
” Ankhiyon se Goli maare”
In fact during Antakshari sessions, would get the females totally riled up by deliberately picking up Govinda songs.
Oh! my God, Vishesh tumne yeh kya kar diya, confession time going on man.
@ Ratnakar- mee bhai, kahin tu mera bichda hua bhai to nahin- wow! even I loved Jaani Dushman- Ek Anokhi Kahani.
Regarding Mithunda , can you believe it I actually made my then girlfriend mad @ me, when I went on to watch a Mithunda
flick in a hall ( Kolkata). The movie was a bengali – Barood & as soon as it started I realised oh! my God this is the remake of a super hit tamil movie – Saamy ( Vikram)which was also made in telugu – Lakshmi Narasimha ( Balakrishna)!!!
Arre yaar Sethu, quite so often i would be watching a Mithun Da movie, on TV, and 1/4 into the movie, i would say “God man this is a remake of that Telugu/Tam movie which i saw”.
I think after Jeetu, Mithun must have acted in maximum remakes of South Indian movies, closely followed by Anil Kapoor.
But wherease most of Anil’s remakes have been publicized, i rarely had any clue about Mithun’s remakes, until i saw it.
Well I must plead guilty big time.My campus ( B.School) was high on the partying scene & apart from rock,hip-hop,pop etc our in-house D.J’s used to play bollywood/punju also beech beech me.Every year there would be some songs made popular by a particular student- and what was my contribution- making Govinda’s songs popular
come on to think of it even now my friends tell me they dont know how I could manage to have ” kisi disco me jaaye” or a ” kem che” popular on the dance floor
@ Ratnakar
Mithunda ka yeh bhi to strategy tha mere bhai!!!
and btw Toofan was a favourite too- Saw it again recently on Zee Cinema after ages.
BTW I agree Big Video may not have an exclusive store in Bhubaneswar yet , but koi Planet M,Music World ya koi sadharan sa CD/DVD/music shop hoga na from where you do your DVD/VCD shopping otherwise? So please wahan pe check karo yaar
@ Sethu
Hmm interesting. Yeah got ur point. Actually have not been in India for last 1 year, and came back in August 08. So as of now things not settled yet. Once things settled, maybe cud start building my DVD/VCD collection.
@ SM: Stand corrected.. Tx..
Vishesh & Sethu!
That ‘Oye Raju’ song still has the same appeal it had back then!
I too liked that film man.
‘Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin’ was very good too.
Nirmal Pandey? Well, i’m left with a very disasterous image of him in my mind forever!
That scene in ‘1 2 ka 4′ as he pours alcohol on that man and says, ”Why YOU do this to me” is just so bad!!
‘Hadh kardi Aapne’? Ok, I see.
But ‘Jaani Dushman’??! Er? No way!!!
And Sethu, DTPH?
Uff!! Now I think I don’t know u at all!
Oh by the way first time any post of mine has got 100 comments on PFC
.
Thanks Sethu, Steve, Arthi, Vishesh. I owe u all a party
@ Steve
Nirmal did start off well with movies like Is Raat Ki, Daayra, Bandit Queen.
But the moment he switched to commercial cinema, he went downhill.
BTW do check out A Train To Pakistan, really good one.
@Ratnakar,
No Babu moshai, thanks for a post that took me down memory lane to my favorite decade..the 90s. Gosh, I feel old now!
Yeah, but for a party…kuch bhi kar sakta hoon!
Yeah, there was another Govinda song..dont remember which movie…
“Tere Baap ko..Maine dekha Bandra station pe,
Toh Bola Uncle Namaste,
Bapu bola, beta gharku aana,
chai peeku jaana,”
Oh yeah..one more…
This was from Govinda in two role, one of them is a Rajni fan…forgot the movie name..darn…
“Lekar tujhko jaaonga dulhan, aanan faanan, aanan faanan,
chand ka dola laaya hoon dulhan, aanan faanan, aanan faanan”
Used to be my fav song..LOL.
I loved Anaam at that time..that movie which had Arman Kohli who lost his memory…a prequel to Memento hehe….
When Narsimha released, I loved it…Cannot Believe it!
In late 80s, I saw Toofan thrice in a day on my VCR…:-))
“Aaya Aaya Toofan, Bhaaga Bhaaga Shaitan” or something like that…
@ Ratnakar
Well I picked up A Train To Pakistan also I think in the Big Video label. So do you need leads on stores in Bhubaneswar?
BTW I might be@ Bhubaneswar this weekend, so where’s the party yaar?
I think u missed “Shool”. Anyways liked ur list.. love to see many aamir films in a list.
My pick if someone cares:
0. Andaz Apna Apna (this one cant compete.. above all)
1. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar
2. Satya
3. Sarfarosh
4. Ghatak
5. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
6. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
7. Shool
8. Vaastav
9. Gupt
10.Rangeela
Hon. Mentions: Kabhi Haa Kabhi Na, Ghayal, Damini…
@ Parth
U seem to be an Aamir fan. Well some of the best movies of the 90’s were Aamir’s. In fact liked most of his movies during that time, except some like Mann, Parampara( one of Yash Chopra’s worst).
Good list there for sure, yeah missed out on Shool, it was a well made movie. But wonder what happened to E.Niwas after that, his later movies aint very great.
@ Vishesh
I think that song was from Gambler, where he starred as a cop, along with Shilpa Shetty. It also had lines like “Madhuri Dixit mile rastey mein, khaye chane hum sasthe mein”.
Yeh Anaam kaun sa movie hai bhai, maine suna hi nahin.
But then Armaan Kohli movie, sorry, just cant go even remotely close. I made the mistake of watching one of his Aulad Ke Dushman, and it was sheer torture.
Wasn’t the Gambler song “Meri Marzi” and another corny song called “Chick Chick Chiclets” LOL
The song that I mentioned had a different tune than that of Madhuri Dixit mili raste mein, I think. It could be same tho ugh. No FM station plays these classics anymore. Boo!
Anaam-Hmm, it has Ayesha Jhulka and Armaan Kohli. He meets an accident, forgets woh kaun hain…Ayesha tells him that he is a drummer (I think) but then he is attacked by somebody and somebody else claims to be his Baap or something like that…Don’t even remember but it was “suspenseful thriller” movie. I was pretty impressed with the storyline at that time. The end, as usual, was lousy and AK gets AJ. One helluva lucky chap, I must say :-)
@ Visesh
The song in Gambler is ” Stop That” & the other songs that I remember are “meri marzi”, hum unse mohabbat karke”,gambler title song”, “chiclets”
I think the song
“lekar Lekar tujhko jaaonga dulhan, aanan faanan, aanan faanan,
chand ka dola laaya hoon dulhan, aanan faanan, aanan faanan
dekh bani hai duniya jab se, saathi hoon main, tera kab se”
is from Do Aankhe Bara Haath
Lekin “Anaam” to bahut hi zyada hai bhai
heheh 90’s ne shatak maar diya
Guys, 90’s was the era of all double meaning..corny..”sexy” songs
” Meri paant bhi sexy”
” Sexy Sexy mujhe log bole”
this song was censored and they had to take out the word “sexy” and replace it as “baby”…Can you believe it? geeez
and the sooper awesome Raja Babu…Aaa–aaa eeee–Ooooo-ooo
Then the Sunil Shetty era…” Bati naa bujhaaa..mujhe lagta hain dar..andhere mein hona jaayein kuch gadbad”
waaah waah..unbeatable lyrics
Same movie also gave one of the best dialogs ever to be written in Hindi Film industry..period
” Mere do-do Baap”
BTW..was Saathi..with Aditya Pancholi released in 90’s…Aditya was terrific in this movie..
Also..Aatish wasnt half bad either..
Yeah Aatish though a rip-off was good.It had some good music too- “dil dil dil main tere pyar me khoya, main saari raat na soya, main kya karoon”, “khaate hain hum kasam tumko hi chahenge”, “hasrate hain bahut magar, tumse main kya kahonn, leke baahon me ab tujhe, pyar karta rahoon”.
OM- yes Saathi was a 90’s product ( 1991)- loved the song
“aaj hum tum aur sanam, milke yeh vaada kare”.It had aditya pancholi & cricketer turned actor-mohsin khan!!!
@OM
Yeah the mere do-do baap was hilarious in Gopi Kishan.BTW Ratnakar are you aware this was a remake of a tamil movie called Avasara Police 100? It had Bhagyaraj playing the double role.
And the sexy sexy song is from Khuddar & incidentally its a tam remake again- “Walter Vetrivel”starring Sathyaraj
Steve mere dost, waise yeh bilkul galat baat hai.ek DTPH ke kaaran aap mujhe ab pechanne se inkaar kar rahe ho!!!!
Nahinnnnnnn!
Sethu ji! Uff ho, bade be-sabre ho tum! :-)
Hamari aankh lag geyi thi.
But I saw ‘Vaaranam Ayirum’, will post my feedback on the correct thread.
Waise aapne mere ko shock kardiya!
‘Jaani Dushman’ and all!
Govinda’s great though.
Even now he’s the best thing in crappy ‘Salaam e ishq’ & ‘Partner’ types!
Ratnakar ji, ur most welcome man!
I’ve really enjoyed the last 2weeks at PFC coz of u guys & all this Tamil talk and 90’s stuff!
‘Khuddar’ is a Tamil remake???
I love that movie!
Btw, party kahan hai? ;-)
My favorites from the list, and more:
Satya, maachis, JJWS, Andaz apna apna, kabhi haa kabhi naa, 1947 earth, lamhe(I do feel very highly of this film), rangeela, khamoshi, gupt, 100 days(for nostalgia), AHAT, dulhe raja(anyday!), darr, baazigar, daud, Bombay, roja, dil se, MPK, Zakhm, Thakshak, Pukar, Khel(!), Pardes, Gardish, Angaar, Mohra, Trimurti(yes I like the film!), Baadshah, Deewana Mastana, BMCM, Taal, Shool…
@ Sethu
Most of the David Dhawan/Govinda/Anil Kapoor/Sunil Shetty movies are remakes of Telugu/Tam movies
Raja Babu-Rukmini Kalyanam(Tamil, Bhagyaraj)
Judwa-Hello Brother(Telugu, Nagarjun)
Andaz- Sundarakanda(Tamil, Bhagyaraja)- There was also a Telugu version staring Venkatesh
Coolie No 1- Chinna Mapillai( Tamil, Prabhu played Govinda’s role, while Visu played the other role i think).
Loafer- Assembly Rowdy( Telugu, Mohanbabu)
Laadla- Gharana Mogudu( Telugu, Chiranjeevi), In Tamil it was Mannan starring Rajnikanth
Anil Kapoor’s Azad was a remake of a Tam movie starring Parthipan and AIshwarya, forgot it’s name.
Sunil Shetty’s Rakshak was again a remake of a Tam movie starring Vijaykanth( dont remember the name).
Judaai- Subalagnam( Telugu)
Biwi No 1- Sati Leelavati( Tamil, Kamal played Anil’s role in original, while Ramesh Arvind played Salman’s role)
No Entry- Charlie Chaplin(Telugu), Pellam Voorelithe(Telugu). Prabhu played Anil’s role, while Prabhu Deva played Fardeen’s role, don’r remember who played Salman’s role.
I think after Jeetu and Mithun, Anil must have starred in maximum remakes of South movies.
Anil Kapoor himself had a lot of admiration for South Indian movies, in an interview he remarked, that SOuth Indian movies were better to Bollywood flicks in terms of technique and scripts. This was during the 90’s.
On Anil K and South Indian movies, he starred in Eeshwar which is a remake too. And now in Yuvraaj he acts like Eeshwar, IMO.
Yaar,Sethu, Anaam movie hain mere bhai, IMDB bhi bolta hain :-) but I guess besides nobody watched it. Not even Armaan “Jaani Dushman” Kohli.
Aanan faanan song is from Hathkadi, I found it finally, it had Govinda, Shilpa Shetty and Madhu.
And the other classic song “Tere baap ko maine dekha bandra station pe” is still mystery. Google gives up on this one!
Was Vansh in 90s? I think I liked at that time.
@ Vishesh
Hmm Yuvraj’s promos make it seem like Rainman.
Vansh was a remake of Maniratnam’s Agni Natchatram in Tamil.
In fact a standard question in many movie quizzes.
What connects Kasak, Yaad Rakhegi Duniya and Vansh?
All remakes of Mani’s movies. Kasak-Mouna Raagam, Yaad Rakhegi Duniya-Gitanjali.
Can add Dayavan also to the list.
@ 121, It should seem like Rainman cos Anil bhaiyya is playing an autistic character. But he so reminds me of Eeshwar.
Thanks for the triva on Vansh, Yaad rakhoonga..isse yaad rakhoonga :-)
Yaar, my boss is gonna fire me. I am spending more time on PFC than our company’s pages!
@ Ratnakar
Brilliant list of remakes.
Raja Babu was Rasukutty in tamil ( Bhagyaraj & Aishwarya)
Anil Kapoor’s Mr.Azad was a remake of Ulle Veliye
( Parthiban,Aishwarya)
Sunil Shetty’s Rakshak was a remake of Vijaykanth’s Honestraj
In No Entry’s tamil version – Charlie Chaplin, Salman’s role was played by Livingston
@ Vishesh
You are right about Haathkadi, I remember the movie.
Regarding Anaam, yes I agree IMDB bhi bolta hai, but for a quizzer & a bollywood fan like me ( Ratnakar me too
the movie really had me stumped- dont recall it @ all
@ Steve
You’ve got me wrong regarding Jaani Dushman- I didnt mean that I like it like how I’ll like a lets say a Vaaranam Aaiyam or even a Dostana.Watching Jaani Dushman ( king of B, C movies) gives you the pleasure equal to watching 10 Mithunda Ooty films like Sanyasi Mera Naam ( Ratnakar heard of it???)
@ Ratnakar…Welcome! Tx to you all for writing so much @ the nineties…
Btw some list of remakes you’ve put down there….
Ratnakar,People may talk about godfather, goodfellas and many more gangster movies.but, sathya remains the greatest gangster movie ever made. The credit should go to Anurag and RGV for writing such a wonderful story..that almost made mumbai underworld famous…truly an outstanding movie.
Oh, I get u Sethu!
One of ‘those’ films…
But ‘DTPH’ is genuinely one of ur faves na?
You’d get on with my niece!
Yes Steve DTPH is genuinely one of my favs & I shamelessly admit it
yeah would love to do a gr8 discussion on it with your niece & see you grimace hahaha
Nahiiiiiiin!
Bachaaaaaaao!
Only yesterday she asked me to whistle (i can’t sing!) the ‘arre re arre’ track!
11years. Yet it’s STILL her fave film!
Grr!
Steve,
Tumhari niece ka Dil bhi Paagal Hain jaise Sethu ka hain :-)
Umm..I liked the movie when it released. I still watch it occasionally, I think its still fun.
I love the songs and that tune “arre arre” hehe…i guess that was the only tune that I could whistle properly.
But if you did not like it then, you may not like it now.
Steve
Looks like I’ve got some support in the form of Vishesh.
)
See those days I used to be madly in love with Mad’s ( I’ve seen movies like Rajkumar & Yaarana on the 1st day only for her)& kind of liked SRK’s Raj/Rahul act for a while. And I thought the songs were heavenly ( yeah you are reading it correctly
Uff!!
Now Vishesh has combined forces with Sethu Maharaja!
I don’t stand in chance in hell with u two and my neice Simrun!
Vishesh, i’ve been watching it lagaataar for 10yrs!
It’s actually torture now!
‘Maya, Mohabbat, Madhuri’!
Allah!
I might regret admitting this, but Rajeev Menon’s ‘Sapnay’ is another one of my guilty pleasures.
Not so much for the film, more so for Prabhu Deva and Kajol.
Music was top too.
u forgot
1. Roja – (Di hai chota sa..song) I watched it on two consecutive days because I couldnt get enough of this song and its picturisation…the round boat in the river with a lit lamp…
2. Baazigar – SRk, Kajol and the songs of course
3. Pukaar – the Prabhu deva Maduri dance and Anil Kapoor Madhuri chemistry
4.you forgot Saajan a biggie for its songs and of course sallu, madhuri and Sanjay dutt. Dutt was good . He stands up to Madhuri pretty damn well in this one.
P.F.C…
Passion For Cinema or Psychic Forum Chat?!
Each time I think of sumat, I see it in the last comment.
Dark&Dusky, I was thinking of mentioning ‘Saajan’ too!
I only saw it once back then and liked it.
Btw, not that this has anything to do with this post, but do u guys know of the ‘nenje nenje’ song from ‘Ratchakan’?
oh yeah and the govinda movie – HUM
with JUMMA CHUMMA song :-) i thought its music was pretty cool those days..
BETA – All the boys in my class went and saw that one so many times for the dhak dhak song of course
AATISH – boys in my class hated this movie so much but would recomment it to others strongly ..to take revenge.
some of them had seen it from the first row and came back with a bad neck !!!
woh bhi kya din the !!!!
Sapnay had good songs, movie was not too great though. Very confused ending.
Roja set the benchmarks for camera work and picturization. Mani rocks.
Saajan was fine. But Lawrence D Souza’s other movies sucked big time. I saw something called Dil Ka Kya Kasoor, and it was sheer torture.
Beta watchable for that saas-bahu tu tu main main. Poor Anil had nothing much to do.
Whoa! This post is such a trip.
Sapney, yeah i loved Dur na jaa mujh se..paas aa..what music by Genius. Never really understood the climax. Never bothered to check again.
Lawrence, man that guy had guts to make Sapney Saajan ke after Saajan was hit. I liked Saajan when it released but later on that song “Dekha Hain Pehli baar…” was sheer torture with that Tan Tana Tan..Tan tana tan.. music. Hated NS after that except for Pardes and Dhadkan.
@ Steve, 10 saal…Bees Saal baad puchoonga..did you survive “Mohabbat kya hain” :-))))
I think technically Pukar is 2000 :-) but yeah it was fun to watch.
@ Ratnakar, even i saw DKKK, it had Prithvi has hero and Divya Bharti and Ayesha, i think. Again music by NS.
Yeah, anybody liked Main Khiladi…, I still remember Anu Malik’s interview with harmonium singing “Chura ke dilmera” and history behind it. He apparently saw a Spanish girl in airport and he crooned those infamous words. I don’t think I can watch that movie again.
More Akki movies that I saw, the krypton bum waali Waqt Hamara Hai or Tu Chor Main Sipahi, Yeh Dillagi. I remember I bought audio cassette of Dancer. It had a corny song: Naachunga Main, Nachoge tum..LOL and Akki does his karate steps as part of dance.
Major Saab, it was such a hammy movie. I remember Sachin’s spoof on it in Kahani Mein Twist (or Kahani puri filmy hain!)
90s had Sajid Khan in Kehne Mein Kya Harz hain, his best show till date.
Vishesh for quite some time i had been wanting to do this 90’s trip, that decade was the one that defined me. In fact not just Bollywood, even some of the best Hollywood flicks i saw were also in 90’s but that wud b a separate post later.
Some more 90’s memories
1) Sweater Uncle Rishi Kapoor romancing heroines half his age
.
2) The Govinda-Karishma Kapoor flicks
3) Mamta Khol karni and her dare bare attitude, but she was one helluva sexy babe.
But the important thing was i cud personally connect with many of the 90’s masala flicks, as they were set in an environment i knew, i grew up, the basti, the adda, the middle class households, the chawls, the nukkad.
Can’t say the same about most of the current masala stuff, all those phoren locations leave me cold.
Guys Re ‘Sapnay’ climax, wasn’t there 3 alternative ends?
1. Kajol gets with Prabhu (as he clings on to train!)
2. Kajol gets with sad puppy Arvind!
3. Kajol tells ‘em both to get a life and turns into a nun?!
I think I saw climax no.1 but now even i’m confused!
‘D.K.Kya Kasoor’ was just ‘Saajan’ reversed wasn’t it?
And Vishesh?!
Badmaash!
Bees saal baad poochhega?
Agar yeh torture jaari raha, toh mohabbat chhodo, main poochhoonga, ”Steve kaun hain, kya hain, kahan hain??!!”
Uff!
@Ratnakar, you said it so right, man.
Somehow 90s is the phase where I can relate to cinema and things around me.
I could relate to Raju taking to bribing for job and redeeming himself or become Raj to get his love or Rahul to be a pimp just to be a successful. Or Inspector Rathod who wants to clean up terrorism or Munna who is no more a Ghulam or Bunnu and Munnu’s tomfoolery.
Even TV seemed so real. The humour, the drama.
This decade barring few movies, rest of them seem so alien to me. I at times feel out of sync with today’s movies and music and TV. I can’t even relate to MTV at times anymore :-(
@ 140 Hahaha !!!
Steve, picture abhi baaki hain mere dost! Abhi to sirf interval hua hain…
Seriously, man you seem like a tortured soul :-)
I think you must hold Ganesha in your hand and pray. Wohi tumhe sahi raasta batayeenga..Woh ek ishaara karenge aur tum samajh jaoge…ki tum DTPH dekhne ke liye bane ho.
Don’t be in denial mode, its you who love DTPH and you are blaming your bechari niece :-)
Well well well I liked Main Khiladi Tu Anari too then & yes Vishesh I remember the interview of Anu Malik too.And yes I DKKK too- remember the title song ” ashiqui mere har ashiq ho jaata hai majboor, is me dil ka, mere dil ka, isme dil ka kya kasoor?” Divya Bharati was on a roll those days!!!
@ Vishesh
Bang on buddy.Steve 11 saal se picture lagatar dekhte aa raha hai aure tujhe, mujhe & uske niece ko doshi tehraata hai!!!
Steve, comment 140 re. Sapnay. LOL…You are tormented!
As far as I remember, she decides to become a nun but at the nth moment realizes she cant be one, tells the seniors, runs runs runs right into PD’s open arms…
I hope I remember right else it’ll be like Phoebe’s classic dialogue after a mini rant in one episode of Friends ‘God..Im so drunk” Superbly funny that was….guess I’m drifting…no more…but had to reply to that…
Steve,
I think yeah Prabhu gets Kajol in the end. Kajol becoming a nun would have been anti-climax for the movie, no?
DKKK’s fate was reverse of Saajan’s :-) so I think you are right about that.
Couple of movies after Saajan…Suryavanshi and Nischay. I had the audio cassette with both of them.
I think Nischay,I got the on-screen double meaning joke for the first time when Karishma asks Sallu..what he likes in her..He says “Tumhare yeh do bade bade…” pauses and then says “kaan ke jhumke”.
Survyavanshi was such a lousy movie. Goodbye, Namaste Salaam Sat sri akal :-) what poetry!
There was one Aamir Khan and Farha movie..Isi ka naam zindagi…I think it was nice mostly but don’t know remember much. Also, Deewana Mujhsa Nahi, a playful prequel to Darr :-)
My biggest guilty pleasure would be Duplicate. Damn, I loved Bablu’s character. He was so oddball goofy! I know I will get all the brickbats now :-)
Regarding Akshay I started liking him with Khiladi & the rest of the series like Sabse Bada Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi,Mr.& Mrs.Khiladi etc ( International Khiladi & Khiladi 420 came much later & were bad). Also liked Yeh Dillagi & during this phase there also came Tu Chor Main Sipahi – happily went to watch it thinking of Main Khiladi Tu Anari in the mind & turned out to be a turkey. Then Akki came up with weirdo’s like Tarazu,
Insaaf etc.Enough was enough & me & a friend decided to boycott Akki’s movies for a while. Then came Keemat ( dil diya, koi nahin mere jaisa etc ) & not only was the Akki-Saif pair in it once again, Raveena & Sonali added to the fizz and both of us went & watched it and finally we said ab bas bhi karo.I guess Sangharsh, Jaanwar
( big hit in B& C) & Hera Pheri brought Akki back on track!!!!
@ Steve
as far as I remember Kajol decides to be a nun,but then she does run away ( Arvind Swamy goes & meets her and all that) & ends up getting married to PD.And who gets them married in the church- well Arvind Swamy who has now become a father ( church wala father ) .ab samjhe???
Deewana Mujhsa Nahin had a popular song- O jaane jaana, zara ruk jaana, ki tune mujhe jaana nahin, sab kuch kehna, magar yeh na kehna , ki tere peeche aana nahin.tere peeche aaoonga main, tujhe apnaoonga main, jaayegi bachke kahan?deewana mujhsa nahin!!!”
@ Ratnakar- Sweater wala Rishi uncle had 2 big hits back to back- Bol Radha Bol & Deewana.I still cringe when I hear Kumar Sanu singing ” Payaliya ho ho ho”
I liked Saif’s debut Aashiq Awara. Total time pass. I think Sanjay Kapoor’s Prem was OK too. His Beqabu was reckless. Cannot believe N chandra could be so Beqabu.
Talking about 90s, Subbu made Saudagar. ILU ILU was such a rage at that time. My nukkad-ka-panwari counted ILU ILU in that song and proclaimed it comes exact 133 times. I was so mighty impressed with DK and RK. Nobody cared for Vivek Mushran. Nothing changed after that!
Anil Kapoor starred in some atrocious movies in 90s, roop ki rani..and Benaam baadshah. I still cannot believe that a girl who gets raped wants to woo her rapist. I think it had that song, Aish Karenge, Cash karenge or something like that. Few others were Pratikaar, Jeevan ek sangharsh, zindagi ek jua and of course, one and only Jamai Raja. Once in a while he would come up with a gem called Lamhe in early 90s. I used to be huge Anil K fan till early 90s. Guess he tried hard to get rid of me and succeeded :-)
Evem Jackie had Prem Deeweane…I used to annoy my cousin with Deepak Patenge…Phool aur Bhanvre song! and he worked in Laat Sahab, Lakshman Rekha (Kya sticker hain, kya bumper hain), Police Officer, (Paresh rawal with that line..Politics hain Politics)
Sethu,
Kumar Sanu single handedly tried to ruin Hindi movie music :-) he was Altaf Raja in disguise!
Sweater Uncle had a movie called Anmol with Manya aunty. It was so lame. He also worked with Tabu in some movie..forgot the name!
Even white shoes Jeetu Uncle came in Mera Pati sirf Mera hain..
It had a great song called Letter Writing 101:
Maine tujhe khat likha..O Sajni..
Maine tera khat padha..O Sajna…
Likha hain kya zara..mujhko batao na…
Bahoon mein leloon..paas to aao na..
na baba na baba na baba…LOL!!!!
“Jaati hoon Main” seems like Deewan-e-Ghalib in front of it!
The 90’s were special to me as I spent my teenage & did my graduation in this period. The fact that actual beer was used was in “Jhooma Chumma’s ” shooting made me so excited & wonder when would I get to party like Big B did
When Mrityudaata was released I was so thrilled that I felt I must celebrate
but midway through the movie I was completely crestfallen!!!
Those were the days when I was madly in love with Mad’s & would blindly watch almost every every movie of hers.
Hmm “those were the best days” of my life
Omg u lot are crazy!
I’m gonna have to change my underwear, pissed myself laughing!!
Too much pagalness!
Vishesh?! Ganesh ke bacche!
Woh ek kya, agar dus ishaare bhi karega toh main kahoonga, ”Sorry Ganpati baba, hum mohabbat nahin karsakte! Humein single rehne ki shakti dena, nahin toh yeh Pooja Wooja ke Maya jaal mein, meri buddhi bhrasht hojaayegi!”
Gawd! Ek ishaara and all!
Ji chahta hain ki main yeh Nisha, Rahul, Pooja ki garrdan marod doon!
Vishesh
I remember the ” maine tujhe khat likha song ” very well.
Sweater uncle movie with Tabu- Pehla Pehla Pyar.yes I liked Saudagar- especially for the songs.
Benaam Baadshah ( Ratnakar pls note) was a remake of a tamil movie- Pudhiya Padhai which was the debut of Parthiban & was a big hit.Remember the song ” hogi tu bijli ya sholay, magar mujhe kya? de de mujhe de de tu, bees rupaiyya.twenty rupees , my twenty rupees” from Jeevan Ek Sangarsh???
Yup, Madz was the queen bee. I remember Jubilee Kumar produced a movie Phool for beta Gaurav with Madz. Baap re, torture series ke liye best namuna.
Was she in Chaand Ka Tukda or was it Sri. It had Sallu in it.
I saw so many movies because of her: Raja, Beta, Dil, Rajkumar, Anjaam, Khalnayak, Mahanta (tapka re tapka..ek aur tapka gaana!), yaarana, Mohabbat and all those Anil-Madhuri combo that i mentioned in my previous mail, also Sailaab, and one that had Akki and Saif..Aarzoo.
Er, Sethu ji, I ‘had’ to watch ‘D.T.P.H’ majbooran!
Simrun would do the whole, ”Mama ji, nobody EVER lets me watch that film” and pull a sad face, so i’d let her see it.
I did my best to show her other films which, in her opinion, were boring, but occasionaly we’d watch a different movie.
But, as soon as the film would end, she’d look at me in that manipulative way, and say, ”Now that we’ve watched ur film, can we watch Dil Toh Pagal Hai??”
AAAAGGGGHHHH!!
”Aur paas, aur paas!”
Uff!
bhai log …full on dhamaal chalu hai 90’s ke naam par….
waise if someone remembers a movie called mother 98…or watever by sri sri sri sawaan kumar………
starring rekha , sanober beri kaanta kabir, and the trimurti of rakesh, jeetendra and randhir……
bhai log..the film has to be seen to be believed……..
and one more…..
raja ki aayegi baraat….
if u watch rani perform in the movie i certainly bet u’ll forget mayawati…….aah what a voice……
@ Sethu, Bees rupees song LOL…yup that was such a classic. Amit Kumar ended up singing so many such songs.
Thanks for Pehla Pehla Pyaar..I had forgotten the name.
lawrence kumar is the only filmmaker who has remade his own movies twice……
saajan
arzoo
mohabbat (akshay khanna and some other hero i forgot..)
remember …oh baby dont break my heart..i will will…..
man ….all the vcd’s dvd’s of such films should come with a statutory warning
“dont try this at home”
@ aswhin,
Mother 98 ended up being Mother 2000 or 2001 I think :-)
It was a hamfest to say the least.
If Raja ki…was bad then watch Mehndi too. Sawan Kumar also made Sanam Bewafa, Bewafa se wafa and wanted to make many more combinations of Bewafa and wafa. Luckily, he spared us to resurface with saawan: the love season :-)
Even Kajol was part of Hulchul with I am sixteen going on seventeen song or Taaqat (Hun huna re hun huna…dekha hazaaron mein pyaar ke liye tujhko chuna). Bhalla ji went to cut his own album eventually. The album went Dhuan, though.
@ 156, Steve Puttar…You need to go to rehab for DTPH abuse!
Boy, your niece rules, I must say.
I think if you ever go for matrimonial ad for her,
please do write:
Looking for suitable boy with DTPH affinity or DTPH immunity.
Age, Caste, Height, nothings matter.
Such boys, Aur Paas Aur paas!
Steve
Chhod de, chhod de.takdeer ke aage tera kuch nahin hoga.
BTW that reminds me of Taqdeerwala ( have you seen it?)it had that song- ” ladki badi hai kamaal ki”
one of the most popular songs those days was from a movie called Hum Sab Chor Hain -” sawlee saloni teri jheel si aankhe, inme na jaane kahan kho gaya hai, mera dil” it was picturised on Kamal Sadanah & Ritu Shivpuri ( I’m sure many reading this wouldnt even have heard of them).
I also liked “Tu Mile Dil Khile” from Criminal!!!
@ 162…yup I used to dig that song…Sawlee saloni…inspite of Kumar Sanu.
Taqdeerwala had Kader Khan as Yumraaj who loved Him-cream :-). It was a funny movie.
I used to like Patthar ke phool, especially those songs. One had movie names reference and other had bombay roads in the lyrics. Kabhi to Chaliya lagta hian….and Linking road, peddar road yada yada yada…
But Arthi, Sethu, Vishesh, there was the ‘nun version’ somewhere na?
Was it in ‘Minsara Kanavu’?
Or was ‘Sapnay’ actually ‘Minsara’ dubbed with only the songs re-shot in Hindi??
But the Jesus song’s not in ‘Minsara’ na?
Gawd, i’m going insane with all this ‘Sapnay Kanavu Minsara’ business!
Btw, I wish I could dance like Prabhu Deva!
@ Vishesh
Chand ka tukda had Sridevi.mahaanta also had Mads’ crooning sexily ” choo le , choo le, choo le mujhe ,choo le ”
@ Ashwin
Its Lawrence D Souza & not Lawrence Kumar
@ sethu..
tu mile dil khile is a classic song….
and that song of kamal sadanah was quite popular …..
taqdeerawala was really funny……aakum bakum
@vishesh
@161….lolz….
mehndi…..
oh i remember that…….Salim at work again…u know the film was not initially cleared by the censor……oh well u see….now that is real censorship man….
so u had pictures of rani and party protesting in front of censor board office….
also picture toh bhai mashallah….
“dekho ji dekho yeh meri sasural hai”
lolz….
u had arjun of mahabharata play an effeminate man in the movie………
ultimate tortue….and guuess wat sahara keeps giving it reruns…..
@ sethu..
my bad its lawrence dsouza….
incidentally the poor guy was shot at once…
i would like to believe it was not because of the quality of his films…..
Steve
Sapnay was basically just Minsara Kanavu dubbed thats it.But of course the dubbing was good- not of the Indira-The Tiger, Jigarwala type
Vishesh- taqdeerwala was a remake of a tamil movie called
Luckyman ( I swear by God)
Yeah Prabhu was such a boneless (in a good way, i mean) guy.
After Hum se hain Muqabla, he had few more dubbed movies including Chhaila and Romeo (?) or are they same…
Mahesh Bhatt started losing big time around this time. He copied Criminal as it is with a difference. Tommy lee jones look cuter in Criminal. He followed with Gentleman. He made a disaster called Chahat and sabotaged Duplicate. I still wonder how he let go Zakhm :-)
Steve,
Sapney, I don’t know it had Nun version. I cannot accept Kajol as nun. No way, da!
Yeah both Mehendi & Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat were classics in that sense….dunno what shadaab khan is into these days.
Hey! talking about songs- how can we all forget
“yeh teri aankhe jukhi jukhi ” from Fareb & ” tere dar par sanam” from Phir teri kahani yaad aayi?
Once & for all lemme say Kajol goes to become a nun, but does not actually become one.She gets married to PD & it is Arvind Swamy who becomes a father !!! uff too much
And how about ” acha sila diya tune mere pyaar ka” from Bewafa Sanam?
@ Vishesh
Chhaila & Romeo were both different.
While on songs & Mahesh Bhatt- how about ” sambhala hai maine, bahut apne dil ko ” from naraaz?
Didn’t Shadaab khan co-wrote some script. Was it for Himalayaputra (kya naam hain bhai!)?
Yup fareb songs were nice and of course Phir teri….brought back Anu Maalik.
Who was the hero in Fareb besides Milind Gunaji, some model I think. he was also in Dulhan Banoo Mein Teri with Deepti Bhatnagar, if anybody remembers. Sapna Awasthi sang the title song. Deepti was so cute yaar…sad she did not leave a mark. Later, she did some travel shows.
Slightly off-topic, Ila Arun sang some Bichuda song too in middle 90s.
Naaraz…yup that song was beautiful.
Naajayaz had the most irritating song…Lal Lal hothon pe, gori kiska naam hain :-)
Even Yaar Gaddar had a song which I liked…Tere bin main kuch bhi nahi…
Does anybody remember that song…Aankhon mein tum ho…kyunki aankho mein tum ho! Sharad Kapoor, Suman Ranganathan and one more guy in Asim Samanta movie.
Ek aur movie thi..which never got released, I think but had a good song. Movie name, Kisi Ka dil..kisi ka pyaar or something like that…
I used to like the Maashooq song: Kaun ho tum jo dil mein samaye jaate ho…Pehli nazar mein apna banaye jaate ho…Main hoon pyaar…Main hoon pyaar..
Yeah the bichuda song was hot & quite popular those days!!!
The hero in Fareb & Dulhan Banoo Mein Teri was faraaz khan.another case of a missing person.
I liked Deepti too- she started off as a model along with Sonali & I thought both were good, unfortunately Deepti fizzled out soon!!!
Himalayputra had ” na woh inkaar karti hai, na woh ikraar karti hai”, ” I am bachelor, akela hoon bimaar hoon ”
)
( this one is for you Steve
Oh Vishesh, ‘Duplicate’s Babloo is SRK at his best!
I thoroughly enjoyed him and his Bebeh Farida Jalal!
And I loved Sanjay Kapoors ‘Prem’.
Ur list (don’t have the number, doesn’t show up on my mobile!) has brought back memories man!
And ofcourse u can fall in love with ur rapist! (Benaam Badshah)
Realism at it’s best!
Sethu, ‘Jeevan Ek Sangharsh’ is really close to my heart!
My sister and I would play that album m’ning, noon and night!
Drove dad crazy!
And thanks for the ‘Minsara’ jhamela!
@ vishesh….
since u like deepti bhatangar…im presuming that u have scene a certain clip from a certain cobra fim….where deepti sigh …is under the waterfall….. ;-)
the actor u are referring is some khan..
shadab khan (amjad khan’s son) acted in Refugee …after that he was supposed to turn director but nothing happened….
@ sethu..
bewafaa sanam songs were a rage back then…..
it also had the song called ” yeh dhonke pyar ke dhonke”
Sonu Nigam’s arrived with this film….
mahesh bhatt is really good witrh songs….some amazing gems in his many many shit movies….
my fav from najayaz
“abhi zinda hun toh jee lene do ..bhari barsaat mein pee lene do..”
listen to this song if u havent…..its a gem….
Yeah I liked the Mashooq song too.Ayub Khan’s Sainik also had that ” meri wafayen” song rite?I liked that too.
Rehte hain hum, khoye khoye gumsum, kyonki aankhon me tum ho, aankhon me tum- it was from Ankhon me tum ho.3rd party was Rohit Roy ( usko kaise bhoole Vishesh- he’s still around & doing good? )
and how can we forget Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s work in Aur Pyar Ho Gaya ( meri saanson me basa hai) and Kacche Daage
( tere bin nahin lagda, ishq di gali wich khoye khoye mangda)?
Ashwin- remember the song from Naajayaz quite well.
And yes I have the clipping from Cobra
“yeh dhoke, yeh dhoke, yeh dhoke pyar ke dhoke, maine seene me sahe hai ro roke, kisi se koi pyar na karo , kisi se koi pyar na karo”
Oh!my God ( where was all this stored in me???)
Matrimonial ads? Lol!
Arre Vishesh, it won’t come to that na?
Obviously when she grows up, she’ll end up in a love triangle and then record confessions on a tape and leave it lying around for someone to find!
Sethu! Ritu Shivpuri? Kamal Sadanah?
Lol, what are u like man?!
Yeah, I remember them.
Gawd, what on earth were we put through back then?!
Sethu! Mad mad man!
”I am a Bachelor” par mera paas pyar hain, dosti hain, Rahul hain, Pooja hain, aur Nisha bhi!
Lol! :-)
@ Ashwin,
speaking of waterfall, Helen Brodie came in Jag Mundra’s Monsoon :-)
@ Sethu
Ronit Roy, Rohit’s bro, his first movie Jaan Tere Naam had real popular songs.
a. Kal college band ho jaayegi,
b. aakha india jaanta hain, hum tum pe marta hain
c. lekin chup chup kar milne se, milne ka maza to aayega
Rohit roy came in many B-grade movies, one was Bhandarkar’s Trishakti, I think. Other one was about some joint family and the elders are harassed or something.
There was also a Trinetra which had Shilpa Shirodkar’s rain dance.
I loved that song from Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya:
Ek din kahin,hum do mile,
aur teesra koi na ho,
baithe rahe, khoye rahe,
kuch main kahoon, kuch tum kaho
And also the climactic song:
Zindagi jhoom kar muskurane ko hain..
pyaar apni kahani sunane ko hain…
Nusrat was amazing. He also sang in Kartoos, sanju baba movie.
There was another song which had me real confused.
“Chahoonga main tujhe lekin,
Kabhi Pyaar na karoonga,
Tere jaise kitni ladkiya
aati hain jaati hain,
hai hai, kis kis ladki ko main
dil apna doonga”
Also, Vishkanya had some waterfall song!
Doe anyone remember Yalgaar. Who was that hero yaar with Manisha, some vicky guy! Naghma was so hot in that song:
Aakhir tumhe aana hain…zara der lagegi!
Thanx Steve yes I missed out Kartoos. And remember Gurus of Peace- the song which he did along with ARR? ( from Vandemataram)
Yup I’ve seen Monsoon too.And remember the scene quite well.It had our bad man Gulshan Grover too
Yeah all the songs of Jaan Tere Naam were a rage then.Ronit Roy was also part of Sridevi’s “Army”
*trivia
ritu shivpuri is the daughter of the great great great Baa (sudha shivpuri ) from saas bahu….
@ vishesh
helen brodie…is she the same chick in hadh kar di aapne whom govinda mistakes to be nirmal pandey’s wife….
guys by the way….Nirmal Pandey hosts a show for a news channel called Live India..
if u dont mind India Tv…u wud certainly not mind it…..
@ 180 Steve,
Love triange and tape, ROTFL!!!
Man, this is the most entertaining thread I ever visited in PFC! There is so much masala in 90s that a movie can be made out of it. Something very similar to some one suggested for 80s.
I remember Yalgaar mainly for that Aakhir tumhe aana hai song.I also remember the song “chahoong main, tujhe lekin” now but not sure of the movie though!!!
@184 aswhin.yup and her father is Om Shivpuri ( I think), the great Vardhan of earlier Don.
Nirmal Pandey was also in Hum Tum pe marte hain…there was some real cool (at that time, baba) back ground music whenever he would enter the frame..
He also had an album, Heer or something.
I am not quite sure of Helen Brodie in HKA. She was there in one Leslie Lewis song video.
@ Vishesh- yes you are right about Helen Brodie in Hadh Kar Di Aapne. One of my favourite scenes in the movie is when Helen & her gangster boyfriend are having fun in a hotel room,Govinda comes into the room & acts as a t.v compere in place of the regular t.v.programs.whenever Helen or the guy would try to switch channels on the remote, Govinda would change his get up & take their pics too
hilarious
Yes Ritu Shivpuri is the daughter of Om Shivpuri. And Nirmal Pandey was hilarious in Hadh Kar Di Aapne too!!!
absolutely vishesh…..
something called….Nabbe ke Dhabbe…..naah..i have a better title…
“90’s ki najayaz bewafa sanam se hum diljale dilwalon ne darr kar chandramukhi se mohabbat kar li magar usse Guddu aur Satya se pyaar ho gaya”
aah cant believe what i wrote…..
vishesh- sorry I need to credit you for reminding me bout Kartoos & not Steve ( I guess we’ve been going on like mad so no wonder one makes such an error
@ vishesh…
that music….how can i forget that…..
it goes like this
“Dow Dow chiki dow dow dow …dow dow chiki dow dow”
talkin of shivpuri ..”himani shivpuri” played govinda’s mother in hum tum pe marte hain…..too much of shivpuris now…..
Hey!Ashwin- that was amazing & btw Diljale reminds me of
“kisi ke ishq me khud ko mitaon, ho nahin sakta , ho nahin sakta ”
also I thought Suhaag ( Akki & Ajay) was tough pass- it had that song ” gore gore mukhde pe kaala kaala chashma” ( remember guys?)
And how we can we forget Jackie Dada’s Amma Dekh from Stuntman?I remember having danced on stage in college to that song
And do you guys remember a movie called Yash?It had some great songs- ” yaaron najane mujhe kya ho gaya, ek ladki ne mera dil le liya , lage kyon na ab mera jiya, ek ladki ne mera dil le liya, neend gayi re mera chain gaya, main baba main baba pagal hua”
also – ” subah subah jab khidki khole bajoo wali lakdi hai dil mere bole hello how are you? “
and how about Masoom ( Inder Kumar & Ayesha Jhulka)?it had
” yeh jo teri payalon ki chamcham hai”
“gore gore paawon me chandi ki paayal”
“chota bacha jaanke humko aankh dikhana re”
@ sethu…
those two songs were my fav at one pot of time…
even the diljale song….
even i ve danced on amma dekh as a kid in my locality wre people dont dance but basically rape others feet…
amma dekh reminds me of the one and only Bali Brahmabhatt…
oh well….i can talk on an on about this dude….
how about ” gaddi teh aana bali di galli”
ya phir “usne bola kemche kemche”
lyrics goes like this”
ussne bola kemche kemche
maine bola aimche aimche
neend nahi aati hai raaton mein
arre yeh toh bapu orem che”
from jis desh mein ganga rehta hain(….i dont think we shud even start on this one…)this is what made jackie bankrupt…ofcourse besides Boom
the guy bali brahmbhatta rocks…u knw…he comes to these police functions held in Mumbai and every year sings these 3 songs…..poor chap….never got to sing more film songs..
When we are with songs here I go again all Sunil Shetty hits
1. Jhanjhariya ( Krishna)
2. Hai hukku, hai hukku, hai hai ( Gopi Kishan)
3. Shehar ki ladki ( Rakshak)
4. Sundara Sundara ( Rakshak)
Sunil Shetty was also a non-dancer & these songs made him a ok dancer !!!
U danced on a stage to ‘Amma Dekh’? Lol!
Sethu man, how can anyone dance to that?!
And yes, I didn’t even mention ‘Kartoos’! U completely confused me then!
‘Yash’ was ANNOYING!
I remember on those old, old tapes, they’d have those ads like, ‘Time audiooo TIME, TIME, TIME, TIME’ and ‘VEEEEEEENUS’ in a badly co-ordinated chorus!
Then they’d have that ‘YASH, yash, YASH’ aap ke liye, uske ke naam, yash, YASH!
Grr! Unbearable!
Vishesh! I agree!
What a fun post!
But, my thumbs gna drop off from texting!
@ Ashwin
I cant forget Amma dekh or Kem che.I’ve already mentioned that I had popularised Kem Che in my B.School
though the movie is from the 2000+ era I must add I liked all the songs in that movie ( Jis Desh Me Ganga Rehta Hai)-
premjaal me phans gayi, o priya o priya sun, are bapu , title song, meri shaadi karwa do
Ashwin??
People RAPE each others feet?! :O
Kya? aisa bhi hota hai?!
Steve- yeh un dinon ki baat hai jab jaante nahin the ki sainkdon saalon baad hum aise baitke purane dinon ka vishleshan karenge- woh bhi andekhe doston ke saath!!!
Those really were cool days man!!!yes the audio cassettes were really irritating with all the jhankaar beats thrown in – cant even think of it!!!

Tum baitke likh rahe ho? Aur main laitke!
