“So what do you do?” he asked me the question i dreaded the most.
“well mamaji, i work in media” i told him, it wasn’t the whole truth but it wasn’t a lie either. Frankly, i didn’t want him to know what exactly i do, since i knew what would follow next…
“beta, why don’t you tell mamaji you write for television and films? he writes comedy on t.v, if you watch his show you will see his name in the end titles” my over enthusiastic mother spilled the beans. God knows where she landed from and after saying all this, where she disappeared. And when i saw that look on mamaji’s face i knew what he was going to say next. or rather ask next.
“is it really? tell me which show do you write?” he asked.i told him very briefly what i wrote.
“ya ya ya…we watch it every night, my son rahul loves it..you write that?!! very good very good” he said proudly and patted me hard which almost spilled my drink.
“but how much do you earn?” he immediately asked not being able to control his curiousity, i guess.
‘pretty decent” i said still wondering how could he ask me this.
“arre..mama se kya chupana? pandra bees hazaar?” he asked not wanting to give up.
i smiled with a straight face.
Then suddenly the colour of his face changed when he asked me apprehensively ” but is this going to be your career?”
“Yes.. i think” i replied.
“you know beta, i am like your father so don’t misunderstand, but this film line isn’t good. all cheap people here, all bad girls, they sleep with producers, you know” he said with concern.
i could see that coming.i was anticipating it.it had happened so many times before.
“it is not that bad mamaji, except a few people” i said defensively.
he interrupted “you don’t know anything, tu abhi baccha hai, see how aishwarya left vivek when his films flopped, people are all selfish here, you leave this filmline, i am telling you” what followed was a long pause. i thought i could leave on the pretext of getting myself a drink but he continued again. “tell me, is something going on between aishwarya and abhishek?” he winked and asked.
“i don’t know much about it because all this doesn’t interest me” i said wanting to end the conversation as quickly i could.
“even i am not interested, i just read it in the papers so i asked you but remember what i said. accha anyways, my son rahul’s vacations are begining and this time he wants to come to bombay, usko tu salman khan se mila de yaar, he is a big fan of salman, he wants to grow up and become a filmstar like him.u must be knowing all these guys na” he said!
i asked the waiter for another drink!

hehehehehe funny post …
I loved that last line in ur review ….
As if salman khan is your (writers’) bhaijaan. =))
Its a pretty insightful experience. Just goes onto show how ignorant people are when it comes to cinema/bollywood when they actually think they are Gods
- The venturing into the film/tele profession is still considered a taboo. The reason now is the inconsistency of income. I guess they are right from their end. But can that stop one who breathes, eats, drink and dreams of cinema?
Very nice post. like it. I Agree even in mere ghar, in Bachppan if we talked more than neccesary( meaning more than the songs..no no no to Choli ke Peeche) i would be shunted. One time i still remember my dad took me out for a walk and asked me never to sing Choli ke Peeche kya hain? I said why dad Choli ke Peeche Tho DIl hain
Dad goes.. you know.. tere Butt ke Peeche kya hain?
My kick..meri laath hain…lol
I get your point nu.
Coz later my Chacha said my dad was very much a huge fan of dev Anand and would dress and patao Girls in the La- Dev Anand Style wearing the scraf, Baloon Hair Cut, etc….
LMAO =))
hehe,Good one:D
It reminds me of my conversation with my dad(which is an annual occurence in our family) 2 years ago. I had recently taken some drastic decisions against my dad’s wish, and was technically ‘jobless’ or to give the situation more jazbaat/punch/emotional quotient, bekaar.
The only thing I had done for last 3 months was watch and study films.
This was a part of the conversation…
(A room mildly lighted for a typical father-son confrontation, the walls are adorned with huge portraits of fore fathers, the silence is dead enough to make the Dadaji’s clock hauntingly go tak tak tak…)
Dad: Hmmmm, so why did you give up studies, and such a good institute! what did you leave it all for?
Me: ummm, dad, I didnt feel I belonged there.
Dad: So what you been doing NOW that you belong somewhere you wanted to belong?
Me: ummm…aaaa…(feigns innocent demeanor & childish vulnerability)..I am studying…(momentary pause to garner 2 seconds of sympathy for being still sincere about studies)…cinema.
Dad: oh I see(supressing the instant desire to throw something at me)…and how exactly are you doing that….
Me: ummm…errr…(awaiting the proverbial)..WATCHING FILMS
Dad: GET OUT!!!!!(leaves the scene)
