Yes…after a long gap A.R.Rahman is back with a bang and having his best time in last 5 yrs or so….that last ARR album that i got hooked so much that i used to listen every hour for 3-4 months was Rang De Basanti, post lagaan he started doing too many patriotic and period films like Mangal Pandey, Bose – A forgotten hero, swades, kisna…i believe he started signing films out of compulsion and respect for great directors.
I personally missed ARR of Roja, Bombay, Kadhalan, Kadhal Desam….those albums were like full meals for me..you get a soft number, peppy number and a song that turns out to be a youth anthem for that particular year….It was Urvasi Urvasi from Kadhalan and Mustafa Mustafa from Kadhal desam and then every freaking song from Dil se…
I have been a ARR bhakt ever since Roja, I used to force my dad to buy cassetes of every freaking ARR film. for me ARR is what sachin if for cricket…if music is religion ARR is god. I was very happy to see him hit the jackpot with Rangeela in Bollywood, It is very special film for me it was Ramu’s break through film in bollywood and then Dil se.. happend I must have 18 or 19 yrs old and I had this old Phillips cassete player that had a head phone jack so i used to hook up some khatara head phones that i bought for Rs 100/- I slept next to cassete player and listen Vandemataram album (Only you was my lullaby i slept listening to that track for more than 6 months, even now Only you eases my nerves and calms me down)…
i borrowed it from a friend and never returned it back to him during the same time Dil se released and I used to switch Dil se and vandemataram cassetes alternatively and this was my routine for more than 6 months. I did the same with alaypayuthe on the same ghisa pita phillips cassete player… I love every song and every bit of that film…god bless Maniratnam and ARR….
Honestly ARR was lost some where post lagaan, he started doing all desh bhakti type films…I was like ” Not Again”…I had to wait untill 2002 then Boys happend…I travelled 150 kms from city to another to watch Boys film… only for ARR and honestly I njoyed every bit of it… Girl friend and Saregame are my favourite and some of the music bits that sidharth and his gang create were awesome too.
for next two years ARR in my opinion was giving just above avg music…finally i got the change that i was looking for…it happened with Rang De Basanti… another good thing that happend with Range De Basanti was he started to work with new singers Like Mohit Chauhan, Naresh Iyer and now Benny Dayal, Javed Ali. Khoon Chala is one of the best freaking songs in the last decade period.
I dont think Mohit Chauhan can do better than this song in his life time… its simply amazing….I think ARR got back to doing what he likes to do i.e to experiment withe new singers, trying out different genres and exploring new music. slowly he started to give some nice peppy numbers like Paathshala, Pappu Can’t dance sala, Guzarish……now Delhi 6……hands down the best fucking album of the year……Boss as a singer had the best time for past 3-4 years… Khwaja mere Khwaja, Tu bole glass aadha khali and Rehna tu from Delhi 6….Dev D comes in second for me..but boss is back kicking every fucking ass in bollywood…and come Feb 22 we will see a great honour for the maestro…

He id maestro………
‘Khoon Chala’ did seem like Mohit Chauhan’s career-best, but ‘Masakali’ changed it . Only Rehman could have composed such a brilliant song for somebody who has such a limited range. Kudos to the boss!
Good post man! Even I have spent days and nights on Only You. What a soothing feeling.
“Only you” and also “Vande Mataram”(the slow rendition) they were simply awesome. I remember buying audio cassettes on day one and going crazy about them, bought wat not movies from “Priyanka” to “Love Birds” to “Kabhi Na Kabhi” to “One 2 Ka Four” to “Hindustani” to “Rangeela” you name it every single one of them.
I dont understand tamil, but went down to get all ARR movie songs from there as well. I tried my best to hook my US classmates / later work colleagues to his music. Infact they loved “Taal and “Lagaan” songs.
Now he will be opening the OSCARS and that would give him a wider audience. I remember Shakalaka Baby becoming UK no 1 song, and “Humma Humma” was the most played song during the 2006 hockey world cup at Germany.
Way to go ARR
actually talking about vande mataram.. it was almost the same time IR came up with a Vande matram song in the Movie Kaalapani or Siraichalai. The Ir compostion was a masterclass but went unnoticed as it was played only as a background in the movie.
guys if u ever get a chance, pls listen to it.
Ram- yes the Vandemataram track in Kaalapani/Siraichalai was a great track.
Varun- Delhi 6 releases on 20th Feb & not 22nd.
Yes I think ARR is truly in form in hindi while he seems to have just got bored in tamil.Sivaji is the only decent soundtrack he’s done in the last 2-3 years in tamil.
Sethu – dont u think sakkarakatti rocked!?
Amar- no I dont think Sakkarakatti rocked.Yes Taxi Taxi was a chart buster no doubt. But then the rest of the songs were just ok according to me.Also it had two songs from Meenakshi including
Chinamma Chilakamma, so I dont think ARR did a great job in Sakkarakatti.
